ACK N OW L E D G E M E N T Apart from personal efforts, the success of any project depends largely on the encouragement and guidelines of many others. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the people who have been instrumental in the successful completion of this project. I would like to show my greatest appreciation to my faculty mentor, Prof Hari Kara for his continuous guidance and feedback. Without his encouragement and support, this project would not have materialized. My heartful thanks to Amit and Sarath, fellow designers who had played the role of advisor, critique and friends. Last but not the least, I am grateful to my family for their continual support and encouragement throughout the journey.

EXECUTIVE’S DESK

The executive desk is the big king of the office world. With loads of drawer storage and surface area, along with an often massive footprint, these carved wood specimens impart a sense of grandeur and timeless appeal that stands apart from other styles. Often what is pictured when considering a traditional desks, the executive desk can encompass anything from a single rectangular desk to an entire office suite.

39

T Y P E S O F E X E C U T I V E ’ S D E S KS Executive desks come in several different styles and configurations. Some are fairly basic, while others are massive and take up a substantial amount of floor space. The type of desk chosen depends on an individual’s own office needs.

BASIC EXECUTIVE DESK

Basic style; large desk; ample working and storage space; just one flat surface for working, plus various drawers and shelving

Usually comes in two pieces, positioned parallel in an L shape; second piece may have extra storage space as well, or just be a work surface

L-SHAPED DESK

Provides maximum amount of working and storage space; three separate pieces positioned in a U shape

UNIQ UE SELLIN G POINT Charcoal’s product offerings focus on the executive level customer who has an appreciation for quality craftsmanship and materials and wishes to integrate technology in to their office environment. The market segments within the office furniture context include the corporate executive, small business owner and home office. Markets will be targeted through a variety of media including the Internet, catalogue distribution and word of mouth advertising. Because Charcoal offers products at a high cost level, mass marketing is not a requirement. Rather the strategy is to make the product information readily available to those seeking quality office furniture with specific technological needs.

EXECUTIVE’S DESK (FURNITURE)

TECHNOLOGY

CHARCOAL’S EXECUTIVE DESK Charcoal occupies a specific niche within the office furniture market. Therefore, the competition does not provide comparable products, as they lack the combination of technological integration and quality in materials and craftsmanship & design.

47

TA R G E T AU D I E N C E Charcoal aims to give the discriminating personal computer user, who cares about design, quality furniture, and quality of working environment, a combination of the highest quality furniture and an integration of the latest technology, at a relatively high price.

MARKET DEMOGRAPHICS The marketing is focused on four types of target consumers:

Corporate Executives

Home Offices

The Bureau of Labour Statistics (http://stats.bls.gov) reports there are 14.4 million executive, administrative, and managerial employees in United States and that number is growing at 1.6% per year. The company estimates the top 1% of that number, 144,000, as our market, and we’re suggesting the number is growing at the same 1.6% annually.

According to a story in Home Office Computing magazine, there are 36 million home offices in the United States. That means a home office in 27% of the households in the country. The U.S. census reports that in 1997 there were 16 million households in this country with incomes of more than $100,000 per year.

Small / Medium Business Owners

Other

According to the most recent data available from the Small Business Administration (SBA), there are between 13 and 16 million small businesses in the United States. That includes about 5.5 million employers and 11 million self-employed people. We take the top 1% of 15 million, to make our potential market of 150,000. The company estimates growth at 2.5%, a composite of different sources.

The company will also sell to some buyers outside India and outside of these targeted market segments. We estimate 100,000 other potential customers, a number that we estimate will be growing at 5% per year.

MATERIAL Since executive desks are designed to project professionalism and prestige, they generally are not made from lower quality materials, such as particleboard. The majority of executive desks are made out of high quality solid wood.. Commonly found types of wood are cherry, mahogany, maple, oak, and walnut, although many other types are also available. There are colors of wood to match any decor and existing furniture. Many times, wooden desks come with a sheet of glass on top, to protect the wood from scratches. Though less common, executive desks can also be found made from steel or another sturdy metal, often with glass tops and shelves. These desks have a more modern style and may not blend in as well with some homes or offices, although for others they are a perfect fit.

GLASS Glass surfaces add a boldly modern touch to any desk. Paired with wood or metal construction, the glass expands visual space and lightens the entire piece of furniture. Often removable for cleaning, maintenance, or moving purposes, glass desktops can be found in a variety of shapes and configurations.

WOOD Wood surfaces are the most traditional form of desktop. These often manifest on top of an all-wood desk, but can also be mounted atop metal frames. As the most common desk construction material, wood models come in a range of finishes, with the most popular being natural, white, black, and grey.

Maple Maple is a gorgeous golden wood that is a joy to work with, especially the burr “Quilted Maple” that has a beautiful depth that, when French polished, is quite breathtaking. The hard maple ‘acer saccharum’ or sugar maple (or rock maple) that we typically use will have a wonderful wavy figuring.

65

Cherry There are a few varieties of Cherry wood used in furniture making. European Cherry, Wild Cherry and American Black Cherry. The wood ranges in colour from a pinkish heartwood through to pale yellow sapwood. Cherry wood is easy to work with in furniture making and has a typically beautiful figuring that reaches its potential when finished by master furniture makers.

Rosewood Rosewood, when finished, is a deeply beautiful dark red colour perfect for luxurious high quality furniture design. When polished, the profoundly alluring depth radiates class‌ There are many species of rosewood, each with its own subtleties.

Walnut A beautiful wood, perhaps more in the burr veneer form than in the slightly plain solid form. Although mild and easy to work it can prove less exciting than its European counterpart. Regardless of aesthetics, however, this is a magnificent furniture-making wood.

Oak English Oak, or European Oak, is a wonderful material to work with. It is heavy, but it is also one of the most graceful woods that only gets better as it ages and the colour matures. English Oak has been a solid staple material of the British furniture making tradition for hundreds of years. Oak pieces come in a variety of colours, from Light to Blackened oak (not to be confused with Black Oak – which is typically a medium to light wood).

67

Ash These are just a few examples of pieces of furniture made in Ash. The wood of an ash tree is a hardwood it has a bright colouring and has a beautiful quality when finished. A common use for Ash wood is in guitars as it has wonderful sustain resonance.

Ebony Ebony is a truly unique wood with a deep black colouring exuding class and sophistication. It also comes with a hefty price tag as it is a rare species. Finished in matt or french polish, this beautiful wood makes a dramatic, bold, statement as a complete piece, or a subtle but striking detailed feature.

Mahogany Mahogany is strong, with a uniform pore structure and poorly defined annual rings. It has a reddish - brown color and may display stripe, ribbon, broken stripe, rope, ripple, mottle, fiddleback or blister figures. Crotch mahogany figures are widely used and greatly valued. Mahogany is an excellent carving wood and finishes well.

Teak Teak is a yellow to dark brown hardwood which is extremely heavy, strong and durable. Often strongly figured, teak may show straight grain, mottled or fiddleback figures. It carves well, but because of its high value, is often used as a veneer. Scandinavian modern, and oriental furniture styles are often crafted of teak. 69

METAL

A metal desktop is the ultimate in utilitarian design. Resisting stains and scuffs, and remaining cool to the touch, it’s another modern material that’s often paired with a modern design desk, like glass. As you can see, metal desktops can be paired for a high contrast look with traditional wood constructed desks.

CORIAN

With its beauty, color, and depth, Corian® solid surface is the ultimate design material — it gives you the opportunity to design furniture and furnishings that meet your exacting vision. The material’s natural solidity and its ability to be shaped, engraved, and combined with other materials make it ideal for innovative seating, tables, bookshelves, cabinets, and many other pieces. And since Corian® is durable enough for the highest-traffic environments, the designs will remain beautiful for years to come.

MATERIALS & PROCESSES

MILD STEEL Mild steel is a type of carbon steel with a low amount of carbon – it is actually also known as “low carbon steel.” Although ranges vary depending on the source, the amount of carbon typically found in mild steel is 0.05% to 0.25% by weight. Mild steel is not an alloy steel and therefore does not contain large amounts of other elements besides iron; you will not find vast amounts of chromium, molybdenum, or other alloying elements in mild steel. Less carbon means that mild steel is typically more ductile, machinable, and weldable than high carbon and other steels, however, it also means it is nearly impossible to harden and strengthen through heating and quenching. The low carbon content also means it has very little carbon and other alloying elements to block dislocations in its crystal structure, generally resulting in less tensile strength than high carbon and alloy steels. Mild steel also has a high amount iron and ferrite, making it magnetic.

PROCESS Welding

CNC

Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by causing fusion. In addition to melting the base metal, a filler material is typically added to the joint to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool) that cools to form a joint that is usually stronger than the base material. Pressure may also be used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce a weld.

Computer Numeric Control (CNC) is the automation of machine tools that are operated by precisely programmed commands encoded on a storage medium (computer command module, usually located on the device) as opposed to controlled manually by hand wheels or levers, or mechanically automated by cams alone.

189

CORIAN Corian is the brand name for a solid surface material created by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont). Its primary use is as a countertop/benchtop surface, though it has many other applications. It is composed of acrylic polymer and alumina trihydrate (ATH), a material derived from bauxite ore. Corian is the original material of this type, created by DuPont scientists in 1967.

PROPERTIES OF CORIAN : •Non-porous •Stain resistant •Seamless: In the fabrication process, joints can be made invisible by joining the relevant pieces with Corian’s own color-matched two-part acrylic epoxy. After the adhesive dries, the area is sanded and polished to create a seamless joint. •Repairable and renewable: Cuts and scratches can be buffed out with a Scotch-Brite pad or orbital sander. •Thermoformable: Flexible when heated, Corian can be shaped and molded into generally limitless forms which can be used in commercial and artistic projects through a process called thermoforming. •Heat resistance: the material is heat resistant up to 100 °C (212 °F), but can be damaged by excess heat. DuPont recommends the use of trivets when the material is installed in kitchens. •Scratches: The material can be scratched, with scratches particularly noticeable on darker colors.

PROCESS Thermoforming

Laser Cutting

Thermoforming is a manufacturing process where a plastic sheet is heated to a pliable forming temperature, formed to a specific shape in a mold, and trimmed to create a usable product. The sheet, or “film” when referring to thinner gauges and certain material types, is heated in an oven to a high-enough temperature that permits it to be stretched into or onto a mold and cooled to a finished shape. Its simplified version is vacuum forming.

Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials, and is typically used for industrial manufacturing applications, but is also starting to be used by schools, small businesses, and hobbyists. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-power laser most commonly through optics. The laser optics and CNC (computer numerical control) are used to direct the material or the laser beam generated.

ADHESIVE

DuPont™ Joint Adhesive 2.0 is a specially formulated two-part reactive seam adhesive to be used with DuPont surfacing materials. DuPont™ Joint Adhesive 2.0 will be available in 50 mL, 250 mL and 470mL cartridges formulated to be a color coordinated with DuPont surfacing materials. It is intended for ridgidly bonding two surfaces of the same compositions. It is not intended for bonding dissimilar materials unless specifically approved by DuPont.

WOOD Commercial Plywood Hardwood plywood is made out of wood from angiosperm trees and used for demanding end uses. Hardwood plywood is characterized by its excellent strength, stiffness and resistance to creep. It has a high planar shear strength and impact resistance, which make it especially suitable for heavy-duty floor and wall structures. Oriented plywood construction has a high wheel-carrying capacity. Hardwood plywood has excellent surface hardness, and damage- and wear-resistance

Veener In woodworking, veneer refers to thin slices of wood, usually thinner than 3 mm (1/8 inch), that typically are glued onto core panels (typically, wood, particle board or medium-density fiberboard) to produce flat panels such as doors, tops and panels for cabinets, par-

STAINLESS STEEL Stainless steel is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel is notable for its corrosion resistance, and it is widely used for food handling and cutlery among many other applications. Stainless steel is used for corrosion-resistant tools such as this nutcracker Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does. However, it is not fully stain-proof in low-oxygen, high-salinity, or poor air-circulation environments. There are various grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and corrosion resistance are required.

BRUSHED FINISH BRUSHED FINISH Brushed or dull polished metal is metal with a unidirectional satin finish. It is produced by polishing the metal with a 120–180 grit belt or wheel then softening with an 80–120 grit greaseless compound or a medium non-woven abrasive belt or pad.

CON CLUSION PROJECT CURRENT STAGE - 1:1 SCALE FORM MOCKUP BUILT MS SQUARE PIPED STRUCTURE FOR VOLANT IS BEING BUILT

Working at Lucid has been one of the learning intensive experiences I’ve had, where work and fun goes hand in hand. The learning in the past 5 months has been immense. Gaining the best out of my exposure of working with clients and with other designers, pushing myself to work with new tools in a completely different environment. The industry taught me how to deal with time of not my own but everybody involved in the project. It taught me to be more goal driven and productive when it came to work. This experience pushed my skills in the direction of creating engaging products in the future.

CONTROL PANEL BUTTON POSITION

Position of the control panel changed from the table top to the cantilever body of Volant. The touch interface changed to an interface with buttons positioned right under the biometric lock scanner to reduce the cost of production.

211

RETROSPECTION These five months I have spent on this internship at Lucid Design have come with a lot of learning, meeting a lot of new people in the design world and broadening my perspective towards design as a profession. I am glad to have gotten a chance to get a first hand experience to know how a large scale organization function. As a designer, I always felt the need to innovate and letting go of constraints across all boundaries to achieve something new but after seeing how much time, effort and money goes into a simple product it made me realise the importance of constraints in design. It made me realise that real innovation lies in creating small changes which create a bigger impact. I feel satisfied to have done this project as it makes me realise my potential and the knowledge that I have picked up from my faculty, my peers and the industry during the 5 years at MIT Institute of Design. Thank you MIT ID, You have been Good!
