the portico

The 4th July is ‘Independents Day’ Independents Day is a national campaign, now in its third year, which aims to give a voice to the UK’s independent retailers. The main thrust of the campaign, which The Portico fully supports, is to encourage footfall to local independent shops and businesses, to celebrate success and diversity on the High Street. However, and in no way wishing to diminish the message of Independents Day, one day is not enough. According to Aristotle, (384BC to 322BC) “One swallow does not make a summer, neither does one fine day...”

Our local businesses need your support and commitment throughout the whole year if they are to continue to provide the levels of local supply and service that means so much to the communities that we all live in. We are extremely fortunate in the Malvern Hills District to have such a high level and range of independent and family businesses. Indeed, it is this very fact that separates us from so many towns throughout the UK. It is worth noting that, by and large, the empty premises in our area are those vacated by national companies. But we cannot afford to ignore the old adage “use it or lose it”. Of course, our local shops and businesses must meet and deliver the expectations of the modern consumer. Happily, there is much evidence that this is the case. We have a delightful mixture of long established businesses, such as Express TV on page 34 And new entrepreneurial ones such as Jargen on page 20 and Sweet and Sour Kraut on page 29.

So, let us all celebrate Independents Day, but also pledge to support our local businesses throughout the year.

Upton upon SevernBa Upton blooms again... Gertrude Jekyll once said “ The Love of Gardening is a seed once sown that never dies”. That’s certainly true of the talented people behind the flowers we see in the gorgeous floral displays on show in Upton. Ably supported by local stalwart Jackie Surtees and a group of volunteers, Brian and Lorna Williams work tirelessly, growing and displaying the many beautiful plants and flowers you see around the town. Way back in 1969, Brian’s parents Will and Dorothy, rented a Land Association Unit in Newent, supplying tomatoes, celery and lettuces. After studying at Pershore and St Alban’s College, Brian worked for a period in Commercial Biological Control. His most interesting project was during the creation of the Eden Project in Cornwall. Brian’s responsibility was to ensure that all of the imported plant specimens were clear of any unwanted “passengers” before they were transferred into the Biomes! Meanwhile, Lorna was pursuing her career in the commercial world.

In 1999 Lorna and Brian bought their own business, and spent the next ten years building up a very successful Garden Centre, whilst continuing to grow for other retailers. Throughout this time, they started to do some work locally involving town planting and were particularly known for their beautiful hanging baskets. After a decade of building up their business, Brian and Lorna took the decision to sell up and return to where their hearts were – growing plants and flowers.

Brian Williams

They worked hard establishing their new company, “The Yardhouse”, and in addition to the fantastic displays you see in Upton, their handiwork is on display throughout Tewkesbury and parts of Cheltenham. Each September Lorna starts working on the next year’s design, and following approval by the Upton in Bloom Committee, plants are ordered in November, grown throughout February & March, and planted out in the town in June, with a change of display for the Winter season.

Brian is very complimentary about Jackie Surtees and the other Volunteers who put so much of their own time into supporting Upton in Bloom, and equally Jackie says they couldn’t do it without Brian and Lorna. The next generation of growers is already in training, Brian and Lorna have their own special helpers, children Emma and Sam… so Gertrude Jekyll must be right and the seed is sown for the next generation of the Williams family... Brian can be contacted on 07962 224541 or at The Yardhouse on 01684 293718

Of course, behind every project like this there is a team of people volunteering their time and efforts to help keep Upton looking so great. If you would like to help in any way, you can contact Jackie Surtees on 01684 592336

If you walk from The Swan Hotel down by the river and along Dunn’s Lane towards the town, you will come across a small garden which is beautifully tended, and presented for the enjoyment of those passing by. It has seemed like something of a magical garden over the years, as I have passed it many times, but never saw the gardener. Maybe, like me, you have wondered about “Bill and Liz” the little scarecrow characters who sit contentedly on their bench in the garden, (only in good weather though!) to the amusement of onlookers. However, a few weeks ago I met the green-fingered lady behind this very pretty display…

WEDNESDAY LUNCH CLUB 12 – 2pm 2 courses

Great for a family night out – Skittle Alley available to Diners at no charge. Booking essential

the portico

The “Magical Gardener” is Mrs Barbara Hartley who is 85 years old! She and her late husband Walter moved to Upton with their three daughters in 1961. They bought the premises next door to The Anchor and opened the renowned Hartley’s Butchers, which became a landmark business in the town and famous for miles around for their sausages. For more than a decade Barbara has tended the garden in support of Upton in Bloom, both by entering the competition, and raising funds from appreciative passersby, who donated a total of £100 last year alone. She has been awarded 1st place many times and she is certainly an inspiration, as well as being seriously interesting to talk to... if you are lucky enough to see her!

spilling the beans... There has been a lot of debate recently about the advent of the new trend of Coffee Shops.

featured Great Malvern

Nowadays, wherever we visit, there appears to be a new wave of coffee shops, both national brands and local owners, many spilling over onto the pavements, in our towns. But, is it really new? In 1878, there was a move afoot to establish a Coffee Tavern in Tewkesbury, similar to those which had been successfully installed in surrounding towns! Of course, there has always been a need for places for friends and business colleagues to meet, either for work or socially. Hotels, clubs, pubs and cafes have traditionally provided such venues. Malvern has, over the years had a number of such establishments, such as The Malvern Club (where Connells Estate Agency is today) and the Piers Plowman Club, originally on Holyrood Terrace, opposite the Foley Arms Hotel, and many more. Changing times and demographics in the home and workplace have led to changes in the way we all live. Foreign travel has exposed many people to “the cafe culture” around the famous Cities of the World, such as Paris and Rome. Coffee variations, Capuccino, Latte, Expresso and Mocha have become part of the everyday conversation at work or play. Many people now work either part-time or at times spread over the seven days of the week and use the coffee shop experience to meet up with friends. Others can work using modern laptops and tablets, some just like to read a book or newspaper in the convivial surrounds of a coffee shop. The variety and quality of the experience has been further enhanced by the ban on smoking. Of course, the other thing at play here is “Fashion”. Each decade seems to promote some variation on a theme. Way back in the 50’s and 60’s we had Milk Bars, and Wimpy. In the 70’s and 80’s Wine Bars provided a new way of meeting socially without going to a pub. Gastro pubs, speciality restaurants, Pizza parlours – they are all representative of lifestyle choices that we like to enjoy. So, as you order your particular favourite coffee and accompanying cake, enjoy the experience and ponder – what will be the next trend?

The dream starts here...

Curtains, blinds, upholstery and all manner of soft furnishings.

‘Whatever you need we can make it’ The kitchen is ‘The Heart of the home’... A strong statement, but there is no doubt, that, more than ever, the kitchen is the most important room in our home. I have worked on a considerable number of projects with a local firm, Malvern Hills Furniture, designing quality bespoke kitchens for clients. It does not matter what type of house, or what size the room. We have always been very successful in producing the best looking, and functional, kitchen in the available space. Our starting point is to find out your needs and aspirations. We will then translate this into scaled, working drawings, and provide mood boards and sampling of materials. With bespoke cabinetry, you can create almost anything you desire. So, let your imagination run free! The current trending is to provide kitchens that are not just working spaces, but living spaces, designed to work for the whole family, (including pets!)

From our workshops and design studio in Malvern we offer a complete service First we measure, offer advice and select products with you from our vast range of pattern books. Next our talented seamstresses make up your order. And then we fit. For an appointment in your home or in our studio please telephone us on: 01684 891392 (8.30-5.00) Monday-Friday Saturdays and evenings by appointment. 07974231243 (out of hours) 28-30 Belle Vue Terrace Malvern, Worcestershire WR14 4PZ

It is no coincidence that “you will always find me in the kitchen at parties!” is heard so often. Yes, definitely the wine, but really because it is the social place to be. Because these spaces are so important in our homes now, the design, build and quality needs to be first class. Sarah-Jane – for today’s local special offers

Modernisation Great Malvern Post Office

The new look has generally been well received. “We are grateful for the understanding and support of our customers and the positive feedback that we have received” says Nigel.

Well, that was hectic. In just five days, Malvern Post Office has been fitted out with a new-look counter front.

Most of the outstanding work now is just down to detail finishing. Sara says, “obviously the works created a fair amount of dust and general mess, but we are nearly finished. Our thanks go to everyone involved, especially our own team.

Nigel says, “that was a hard and trying time, with very little rest! The whole operation was carried out with military precision. There is still some work to be done before the whole of the re-fit is finalised, but it was great to be open again so quickly”

We can now get down to making the most of the extra space, actual and visual, that has been created, to enhance the service and products that we offer”

computer and phone repairs I am thrilled to have the chance to open my own computer and phone repair business here in Malvern Wells. I started life in Malvern, where my father worked as a computer technician at Malvern College, before moving with the family to Devon. After some eight years, the family bought a convenience store in Newent, which they have recently sold. I have always been more practical than academic, and I really enjoy working with computers.

I will repair anything computer or phone related. I give a free quotation for every job, and can, subject to locality, collect directly from the customer’s home. I also sell re-furbished computers and phones, and also supply new laptops to order. Contact me on: 01684 252482 Craig Farnes – for today’s local special offers

Malvern Link

it will soon be Christmas... July is the month when the traders throughout Malvern Link, Barnard`s Green and Great Malvern join together for the Malvern Carnival. Considerable work and planning behind the scenes, over many months, provides a fabulous event for the whole of the community and visitors to enjoy. Traders always have to plan ahead. Whatever their business, they are usually planning between three and six months in advance. Seasonal requirements, either in stock items or work practices, determine much of their year. So, here in July, the traders in Malvern Link are turning their thoughts towards Christmas. An exciting proposal for a Christmas Fayre has been put forward for discussion. Malvern Link could be an ideal venue for this idea. With plentiful and free parking, a wide variety of individual shops, and the opportunity to engage with people of all ages throughout the Malverns and surrounding areas. If you are interested in any aspect of this idea, would you please contact Donald MacKenzie at Francis of Malvern, or Tanya Trotman of Malvern Cycles.

a meaningful memorial to a regular visitor... The Portico Team was saddened to receive a call from Alex, to inform us that Dave had been hit by a car in Court Road, Barnard’s Green. Many readers will identify with Alex and her family at this time, for the loss of a pet affects the whole of the household. Alex, indeed, half of Malvern Wells, Worcestershire Golf Club and many more, had always known Dave as a wanderer, capable of covering quite considerable distances from home. “But I really had no idea that Dave went down to Barnard’s Green” says Alex. The accident took place in Court Road. John, of Masefields Vetinerary practice, and the first to learn of Dave’s demise, says “Court Road is something of an accident blackspot for cats, possibly due to the large number of cars parked either side of the road, and the speed of cars passing through”

Dave had only recently taken on the role of Portico Mascot on our competition page. The Portico Team has elected to cancel the July competition and donate the prize money of £250.00 to “Help the Heroes” – Dave would have approved of that.

Alex has received many calls from friends and customers. “Dave was such a character, so well known, it really will leave a large gap in our lives” said her son, Jamie Worcestershire Golf Club has kindly offered a spot for Dave`s ashes and a small memorial to be placed on the 8th tee. A small, but meaningful memorial to a regular visitor, recognised and loved by many.

express tv_Layout 1 24/06/2013 16:16 Page 1

Express TV has been an integral part of the Malvern Link retail community since 1959. Since opening, they have traded through the TV boom years, and witnessed the advent of colour broadcasting, satellite revolution, digital switchover, and more recently, the introduction of flat screen technologies.

ut there is so much more to this business than televisions. From 1984, the biggest growth has been in domestic appliances. Bosch, Panasonic and Blomberg appliances now occupy half of the overall showroom space. Like so many of our district`s successful family businesses, Express TV is all about people. Now in its third generation, current Managing Director, Heath Evans, is understandably proud of the fact that he has customers who have dealt with his father and grandfather before him. Heath says, “Initiatives like The Portico, provide a timely reminder that we all value a sense of local community, and that local business has a key role to play in maintaining the personal contact that bonds us. Express TV has been a part of Malvern for 54 years, but recently we have travelled further and further from Malvern to help people who have struggled to find the support they need on their own high streets. I believe it is a great shame that good service has become so hard to find” Although the technologies they sell have changed beyond recognition, it is the experience, knowledge and service they provide that has always been at the heart of what makes this business special. For example, installation of built-in kitchen appliances and wall-mounting TV`s now accounts for a significant part of the daily work load. Express TV also has its own on-site workshop where brands like Panasonic and Sony are repaired. So, what does the future hold? Director and family member, Heidi Smith, explains “we have traditional values, but we are also very aware of the changing ways that people like to shop. We have recently revamped our website, and our partnership with Euronics, Europe`s biggest independent electrical buying group, has given us access to huge buying power. I would urge anyone to look at to see some of the spectacular deals on offer.” Exciting technologies, specialist installation and support facilities, combined with some unbeatable deals – these are the things that will keep this business successful. But most of all, great personal service.

Malvern is catching up with the 21st Century and embracing modern technology through the use of QR codes across the District. Since our May article on QR codes we were delighted to hear from Malvern Museum, who have recently introduced QR codes as a fun and interactive way to learn about history. They were implemented in the museum after securing a successful bid for funding to West Midlands Museum Development Grant Fund supported by Arts Council England. Visitors who have smart phones, or tablets, can scan the QR code using the museum’s free Wi-Fi access, to discover some of the quirkier facts about Malvern’s past. The museum, which is in the beautiful medieval Priory Gatehouse near the Abbey Hotel, is open every day from 25th March-31st October, 10.30-5pm – and it's free on Sundays. Everyone is welcome to go and find out something new – what made Elgar ill so often; what Blinks are; why the scientists who came to Malvern in 1942 were so disliked – and a bit about monks’ underpants! All participating businesses within the Portico will also be displaying QR codes in their shop windows or on their vehicles. Look out for them this month across the District and start scanning the codes to take advantage of what’s on offer.

how QR works – what is it? To scan a QR code you need to download an app onto your smartphone or tablet device. You can usually obtain these for free through the App store, Google Play or your app provider for your phone/device.

Apps to scan QR codes are widely available and are FREE for all smart phones! – for today’s local special offers

Barnard’s Green

Barnard’s Green

Barnard’s Green Trader’s Association has developed a strong relationship with local Great Malvern and Malvern Parish Schools, and always seeks to involve primary aged pupils in fun activities. Living up to their reputation, the Traders Association are going

to encourage local school children to “Plant a bean in Barnard’s Green”, as part of their “Carnival Capers” activities supporting the Malvern Carnival on Saturday, July 13th. Participants will be invited to plant a special “message bean”, which is stamped with a message on the outside of the pod. When the bean starts to grow, the message is revealed. The beans will be planted in coloured water beads, which will provide the moisture for the plant to grow.

28 36

“This makes it a lot more fun for children, as they have something different and attractive to look at as the bean starts to grow” says Jane Knowles, of Just So, who has organised the competition. ”As Traders, one of our aims was to support the “Malvern in Bloom” initiative, and we felt that this was a great way to do it.” Children will take their beans home with them for the summer recess, and, at the end of the holiday, there will be a “Bean Measuring Day”. The child who has grown the tallest bean will win £50 of gardening vouchers, kindly donated by our local Grange Farm Nursery in Guarlford. The prize will be split equally between the winning child and their school. “The competition is open to any child from other local schools, just turn up on the day” says Jane.” We intend to take lots of pictures so that we can show the Malvern in Bloom judges when they call in to Barnard’s Green on judging day. As always, for us, it is all about getting involved and serving our local community. Our thanks also go to our District Councillors, Melanie Baker and Lucy Hodgson, who have kindly helped to support the event”

VIEW FROM THE VETS As the summer solstice arrives and the joys of this time of year, with lots of flowers and buzzing things, comes a distinct type of telephone call to the practice, which can be very alarming. The call has a lot of variations, but follows a certain theme; everything was fine, and then suddenly not so fine, with an unhappy pet in some distress. The pet is usually outside at the time and minding its own business; perhaps sniffing the above mentioned flowers, or having a stroll on the common. This seems slightly unfair, and especially to young dogs it can have a ‘hand of god’ type effect and produce symptoms of quite severe distress. The cause of all this, as you will have guessed, is our pets’ endless fascination with all things buzzing, and especially things that sting. Now a pet’s reaction to stings can come in three distinct flavours. The first type of reaction is a normal reaction to the sting; some swelling and pain at the site, and one which Noodle, our cat, who came in last night with a paw three times the size of the one he went out with, can attest to. With these swellings a cold compress and some sympathy is all that is required and Noodle’s paw is back to normal this morning. The second type of reaction is a little more alarming, and presents with a large number of raised lumps all over the body and general itchiness. This is called an urticarial reaction, and especially in short coated breeds about half an hour after the sting, look like some exotic disease and provokes quite a reaction from the owners as well. Fortunately, these swellings do not last long, and most can be treated simply after some advice from their vet. It is the third type of reaction that worries us the most, and this is a full blown anaphylactic reaction to a sting. This produces a pet with severe swelling over the whole body, most notably around the head with associated breathing difficulties. Most dogs, but especially our squashed nose breeds like pugs and bulldogs are in danger of suffocation and shock, and need attention immediately from their vet.

We strive to offer you a high-quality service to fit around your day, and the busiest of lifestyles. We offer evening, daytime and weekend slots and will arrange the valet to take place at a location to suit you; whether it be your home or your workplace, or somewhere else entirely, Glimmer and Shine will work around your schedule. Not all our patients read the textbook though, and my favourite happened last year when a terrier came to us with severe stomach cramps and vomiting that we could not find the cause of. When we put a tube camera down into the stomach, we found a dead bee, and removed a tiny sting with its poison sack still attached from the stomach the portico wall. Tenbury Wells

At times, Tenbury Wells’ streets can be a little confusing. Teme Street is often regarded as Tenbury. However, it extends into Market Street and Cross Street, as well as the Bromyard Road. Teme Street also crosses over the Bridge and into Burford, which, although in Shropshire, is actually part of Tenbury Wells!

Local Producers’ Market

There are a host of businesses ‘over the Bridge’, such as pubs & restaurants, fishing pools, garden centres and caravan parks. They all attract shoppers and tourists, as well as helping the local economy by supporting independent shops. They are also actively involved in various events throughout the calendar, such as the Tenbury Local Producers Market. This event is held on the third Saturday of the month, at the Royal Oak Hotel, in Market Street. The next market is due to be held on July 20th. The area of Burford houses the biggest employer in Tenbury. Kerry Ingredients and Flavours, which is one of the UK’s most successful international food businesses. With its Head Office in Ireland, Kerry supplies a variety of ingredients for dairy, bakery, desserts and ice-cream manufacturers. Kerry also supplies branded products to retail outlets. As a leading business in the Tenbury area, Kerry engages the services of many local suppliers, and in general, supports many local events such as the Food Fayre. We have some welcome news about Teme Street. The National Health Dental Practice is moving in to what has been a long-term vacant property. This is a very welcome change to the main street. There are a number of businesses in Tenbury celebrating significant trading years. Like all Towns, they have witnessed, and had to adapt to, many changes. Susan and Malcolm Chase at the Post Office have been serving the local area for 22 years now. Services, products and the Internet have altered the retail scene quite dramatically even in that time, but as they both say “it is now more necessary than ever to deliver an up to date service to our customers”
