a strong reason to shop locally... We launched The Portico last month, promising to bring you the stories of local independent and family businesses. We intend to do this with a blend of mature and new ventures, emphasising that this mixture of tradition, rejuvenation and innovation is the very lifeblood of our communities. In our May edition, we featured the 130 year success story of F.L.Cox of Malvern and mentioned the new successes of Zinnia, Nik Nak Noo and Austin & Co. This month, we visit Haywards at Upton and Richard C Swift’s Bakery in Tenbury to hear of their long term success. Meanwhile, daily, we are hearing about new ventures and start-ups, and it is our mission to bring them to you through these pages and our website, Turn to pages 18 and 19 to read about The Taste @ Malvern and The Cake Woman.

A couple of centuries ago, almost about the time that Haywards were starting up, Napoleon Bonaparte rather disparagingly called us a “nation of shopkeepers”. Of course, we all know he met his Waterloo! But, for a moment, let us consider where that remark sits in today’s world. Family and Independent businesses, together with sole traders, account for nearly 50% of all employment in the private sector. It has been estimated that between 70 and 80 pence of every pound that is spent with them stays within the area. Compare that to the money spent with national chains and Retail Parks, where the estimate of the money staying within the local area drops down to as little as 10 pence in the pound. They pay their local rates and taxes. They do not devise and take advantage of elaborate tax schemes and tax havens. In short, they are the backbone of our local communities and national commerce, and this gives us all a strong reason “To Shop Locally”. We wish to thank all of those readers and advertisers who have offered The Portico warm words of welcome and encouragement, fully supporting our ethos. We also wish to thank those of you who have applied for your free Loyalty Card (literally hundreds) and also taken part in our “Dave the Cat” competition. By the time that you read this magazine, 25 lucky readers from our May issue will have received their £10 voucher which can be spent in any Portico participating business. Why not have a go yourself this month? (turn to page 20).

Great Malvern “Bands in the Park” is a FREE event… Every Sunday afternoon, from now until 8th September, you can enjoy wonderful music in Priory Park – and it is totally free. Priory Park was formerly the grounds of Priory Mansion, a large imposing house built in the 1870s by Alfred Miles Speer. He had demolished the earlier house, “The Priory”, which had been the home of Dr Gully of water cure fame. Towards the completion of the impressive new house, Alfred Speer purchased the ground that is now known as Priory Park and Swan Pool, for the sum of £4500.00, and he later added the area that is now covered by the Winter Gardens/Theatre. By the time that Alfred Speer died in 1894, he had created a magnificent mansion in the Gothic Style, standing in some eight acres of splendid gardens.

BANDS IN THE PARK JUNE 2013 2nd Malvern Chase Jazz Band 9th Alcester Victoria Band 16th Malvern Chase Brass Band 23rd Cinderford Band 30th Gloucestershire Police Band

The whole of the property and gardens have subsequently been put to many uses, but the underlying beauty of the grounds and their magnificent trees remains today for our enjoyment. Why not visit Malvern for the day? Meet up with friends. Bring a visitor. Many shops are open on Sundays; there is plentiful free parking in the area and the car park charges nearest to the Gardens are quite reasonable. The Great Malvern Hotel, easy walking distance from the Gardens, has a special offer for Sunday Lunch. Or you can bring your own picnic, blankets and chairs, to take advantage of the grassy slopes. The café and bar in the Theatre are open for drinks and snacks. There is a play area for children, ducks to feed on the ornamental lake, and all of this set against the magnificent backdrop of our wonderful hills. And yes, it really is FREE !!

new town mayor

The Portico was pleased to welcome Malvern’s new town mayor, Councillor Julian Roskams, to their offices this week. Councillor Roskams has run his own publishing business for 9 years, and is well-placed to understand the many problems facing family and independent businesses throughout the area. During his term in office it is his strong wish to encourage start-up and entrepreneurial enterprises. He stated “there is a tremendous wealth of expertise throughout our District, and I hope that my role as Mayor can act as a facilitator for encouragement and promotion across the whole spectrum of local businesses” During the Mayor’s visit, we discussed the practicalities of a support group being formed to assist and mentor start-up businesses. Good progress was made on this topic, and we hope to announce news of an exciting initiative in our next issue. The Portico would like to offer their congratulations to Councillor Roskams and every good wish for the year ahead.

The dream starts here...

Curtains, blinds, upholstery and all manner of soft furnishings.

Spring clean... Here we go again! One minute spring, one minute summer, one minute autumn!! But one thing is for sure, when that brighter light comes through your windows, you notice your interiors more! Time for a spruce up or spring clean! Ok, so things look better after this, but maybe a touch of one or two new or brighter things will add some va va vooom... New cushion covers are lovely and a quick fix, but why not think further than this? Floors – nothing like a new rug to cheer things up. Classic Interiors (Malvern) made some lovely plain rugs for one of my clients recently which made a huge difference to the room. Just touches of colour are enough sometimes. Don’t mix too many together though – I always suggest just one bright and two tonal. Our kitchens are now a living hub for many of us and deserve more attention. Display colourful crockery, placemats, fruit bowls, tea towels. Have you been to Kozihaus on Worcester Road, Malvern yet? Great products, vast selection. Why not visit

the shop and try just picking one main colour and a splash or so of something else. Kitchen looking a bit tired? John and his team at Malvern Hills Furniture not only make great furniture and create great kitchens, but are also expert at re-vamping what you have. Last but not least, the Conservatory. Super spaces at this time of year, but they do take a beating from the elements. Call Pure Window Clean to make it sparkle again. He just did mine, and brought it back to life! Great

room to introduce new seat covers to. Why not double-side in different fabrics? Just turn them over for a new look as your mood takes you? Malvern Link

Malvern Link Changes are due to be made at the pavilion building in Victoria Park. Malvern Town Council has accepted a successful tender, which will mean the current nursery will change to a cafe. This new cafe will create an active hub and meeting place at the Park, which already has great facilities and plentiful free parking. A new Community Interest company has also been set up. The newly formed Malvern Community Link C.I.C. will be supporting local projects focussed on improving sports, healthy-living and local businesses throughout the community. The first event to be planned will be a Community Day to be held on 21st July, in Victoria Park. The event aims to raise funds for local charities, such as the Fixvict Project ( This day will provide fun for friends and families with many attractions, such as live music, pig roast, bouncy castle, skate-board demonstrations and much, much more. Meanwhile, footfall and business levels are reflecting the Spring optimism, with many traders reporting a welcome increase. Francis of Malvern will celebrate 80 years in business this year, and we will bring you a more informative look at this vibrant, landmark company in the near future. We also welcome a new start-up shop. Tracy Brookes has opened “The Cake Woman” at 101 Worcester Road-see page 19 for more details.

A real ‘life’ story... The Portico Team has been based in Troyte House, Malvern for the past 12 months. There are seven of us in total but we are currently one man down... Just a few days before our launch at the beginning of May, one of our team members became unwell. We quickly realised that Nigel was probably having a stroke and it was important to get him to hospital as speedily as possible. We got him into a car and within minutes we had arrived at Malvern Community Hospital.

It is here that our real story begins. Within ninety seconds of approaching the Reception desk, Nigel was taken into a sick bay, placed on a bed and what seemed like an army of staff were working fast and efficiently to assess and stabilise the situation. Before another twenty minutes had passed, an ambulance pulled up to take Nigel to Worcester Royal Hospital. Two extra nurses were added to the driver and on-board paramedic to ensure maximum support and medical attention. With strokes, speed is of the essence. The faster the response, the more positive the outcome is likely to be. The actions of the personnel at Malvern Community Hospital

ensured that Nigel was able to receive attention within the preferred timescales for treating clots. Happily, we are delighted to report that Nigel is now back at home. He will obviously be taking things easy for the immediate future as he makes what we hope will be a full recovery over the coming months. So the happy outcome is that Angie still has a husband, Will and Harriet a father, and The Portico Team a valued teammate and friend. Nigel received the most wonderful service, firstly at Malvern Community Hospital, and then by the Ambulance Service and Worcester Royal Hospital. It was truly amazing.

Malvern welcomes a new shop. Tracy Brookes has opened “The Cake Woman at 101, Worcester Road, which is near the traffic lights at Link Top. Tracy, an accountant in her previous life, has turned what was a hobby, into a thriving business. Tracy started from home about two years ago, and then progressed to a working and display area provided by Sarah Grout, of Events Organiser. Tracy said “I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Sarah, who gave me the opportunity to introduce my business to a wider world and has really helped me to get established. Largely self-taught, Tracy also attended courses at Worcester College of Technology for food. Tracy creates celebration cakes for any occasion. All cakes are individually designed to customer`s own requirements. Of course, Tracy can also offer great ideas based on her experience, so the end result will always be a perfect match for the intended celebration. The Portico offers Tracy their congratulations and best wishes for the future of her business. CARD LOYALTY

It is often said that you don’t own a cat, the cat owns you. If an independent attitude and lifestyle are anything to go by, then this applies to Dave.

Dave has really enjoyed the month of May... The combination of great Bank Holiday weather, lots of time on the golf course and his new part-time job as the Mascot for The Portico, has put a real spring in his step. Even his owner, Alex, seems a bit more relaxed now that kitchen enquiries and orders are coming in! However, for him, the highlight of the month was the time he spent at the Spring Gardening Show. Of course, he is luckier than most of us, as he has his own route in (a loose fence panel near the old Brown Gate) and so, not only can he get in free, but he can also visit after the crowds have gone. The Floral Marquee was, as always, stupendous. He has to be careful there, as regular security patrols are on the

lookout for intruders. But he is too clever for them! His absolute favourite garden was created by Mark Eveleigh. Although Mark is currently living in Hampshire, he is a local lad from Hanley Castle. Dave spent a few hours keeping Mark company the night before the show opened, while Mark was putting the finishing touches to his entry. Mark was not only awarded a Silver Gilt, but he also featured on BBC’s Gardening World. If you missed that, Dave says that you can look it up on BBC iPlayer – episode 9 on Friday 12th May.

Dave will be out and about again in June, visiting shops and businesses on behalf of The Portico. However, Sunday is his day of rest, and you may just be lucky enough to catch up with him in the Priory Gardens, listening to Bands. Dave loves the music, the happy atmosphere and... it is free!!

Each month, Dave will visit businesses throughout the Malvern Hills District, covering Upton, The Malverns and Tenbury. The Competition is fun and totally free to enter. Just read the clues and visit the Portico Website to track down where Dave has visited recently. You will find his photo in the places he has been to. We suggest you write down your answers then follow the instructions on our Home Page to enter the competition. Remember, it is totally free and the first 25 correct entries to be drawn each month will receive a £10 cash voucher to spend in shops and businesses featured in this magazine. This month, Dave and his extended family are holding their annual get-together. Dave has been elected to sort out some requirements...

THIS MONTH’S CLUES 1 Dave will need to go to Upton to organise extra tables, chairs and crockery 2 Dave will need help with the buffet and so he is visiting Barnard’s Green 3 Extra accommodation will be needed so he needs to find a hotel in Great Malvern 4 Dave needs his bicycle repairing if he is to get around so many places, so off to Malvern Link 5 Owner Alex always likes a new outfit for these events and so Dave is checking out dresses for her in Tenbury PLEASE NOTE Competition is only open to residents of the Uk, and must be 18 or over and we can only accept one entry per person. Competition is not open to Portico employees or advertisers or their immediate families. Full rules may found at

This month, we focus on Malvern Kitchens, Ltd. The new owner, Alex, formerly worked here as Sales Manager. Then, in January of this year, Alex had, in her own words, “a light-headed moment”, and bought the business. Her son, Jamie works with her. For many years, Alex worked at Malvern Glass, and many current and new customers say that they remember her from there. Alex and her husband, together with her son Jamie, and Dave the Cat, live in Malvern Wells. Jamie, who attended Malvern Chase School, had high hopes of becoming a professional golfer. But the money ran out before he could make it! Alex is pleased with the direction of Malvern Kitchens, and says that enquiries and orders are on the up. Please call in. There is loads of free parking right outside the showroom. Alex and Jamie will be pleased to discuss your ideas and requirements, and also pass on the benefit of their own experience and knowledge.

Every year at the end of June, Upton comes alive to the sound of Jazz and many shops and businesses have extended opening hours during the Festival. The Flood defences are complete and the town is spruced up and ready to rock and roll for the 28th year… Bright Lights, Great Music, Fabulous Outfits, … sounds glamorous but only the lucky few make it to the top and for many talented Musicians the Day Job has to take priority.

We asked local Band, The Indigo Kings, fresh from performing at the Malvern Spring Garden Show, to give us an insight into the twilight world of a typical gig day. Caroline Boucher, one of The Indigo Kings two lead singers, joined after seeing an internet advertisement and she gave us an insight into her double life, Business Analyst by day, and Front of Stage by night…

In addition to this, there is rehearsal time of course, plus PR and press work, but it is clear that the Band love what they do, and they deliver it with a real sense of style. Playing a mix of original jazz, blues and swing and blending it with old school nostalgia, The Indigo Kings form vintage pop songs that will have your feet tapping and your head swaying. They have been featured on Jazz FM and BBC Introducing, but they have yet to achieve their greatest ambition of appearing on Jools Holland! There is no doubt they have set themselves a challenge, but as Caroline says, “where there’s a will, there’s a way… and we have the will!” Although they’re not playing at the Upton Festival, the new single “When I turn out the light” will be available at the end of July. Wendy Goodman – Upton upon Severn 01684 567404 After over a year of planning and working on our project, we were delighted to launch The Portico last month and so far we have had some fantastic feedback both from clients and the general public. In fact, many of my clients were in contact within the first week to say they had already had enquiries and orders placed as a direct result of appearing with us. In addition, we literally had hundreds of Loyalty Card applications during the first few days – all very exciting! As Upton prepares for one of the busiest weekends of the year with the Jazz Festival at the end of June, enquiries are welcome from any type of business, regardless of size or sector. Our aim is to continue raising awareness of what’s available on the doorstep and increase footfall in Upton and across the District throughout the year. I look forward to hearing from you. – for today’s local special offers

Let’s face it, 2007 was not the best year for most people in the District, with record-breaking floods affecting hundreds of homes and businesses. On the now infamous night of Friday, 22nd July, Val Pollard and Sue Matthews were working hard at getting The Railway back in order, having recently taken over the license. Stranded, they ended up sleeping on the floor for the night, along with a lone customer they still don’t know who he was! Although the cellar flooded, the bar and restaurant were spared and over the next week or two, Val and Sue, together with Sue’s husband Paul, were kept busy keeping spirits up by offering a warm haven to many of the beleaguered villagers from Ripple and Uckinghall, several of whom had suffered severe flooding in their homes. They were in at the deep end in more ways than one! Since then, the trio has worked hard to build up confidence and their clientele has grown to such an extent that they regularly cater for 100+ customers for Sunday Lunch. Sue was the Head Chef at the Beckford Hotel and Paul ran his own restaurant in his home county of Norfolk so they are no strangers to the catering industry and they have worked hard with Val to establish a thriving business. Apart from hosting weddings and special celebrations, they also offer many themed nights such as their famous Pie Night (next up on 20th June!), Fish and Chip Specials on Friday nights and also a really popular Wednesday Lunch Club with a choice of 2 courses for £5.75…. Vegetarians are well catered for on all occasions. The Skittle Alley is popular with regulars and visitors alike and bookings are taken for private parties. Paul’s speciality however, is in providing a comprehensive Real Ale selection. His main suppliers are Butcombe, Wye Valley, Fullers and Greene King, but he is always keen to hear from local brewers as he prides himself on offering an excellent range. Paul says “many of our customers just leave the choice of ale to me, as I work hard at knowing the tastes of individual clients. I pride myself on keeping the ales well and the pipes are cleaned at least twice a week”. But The Railway is not just a Pub, it’s the centre of a small, but perfectly formed village community and many locals will tell you how supportive the team are. Since being in charge, Val, Sue & Paul have helped raise over £3000 for Macmillan Cancer Research, £11,000 for Breast Cancer charities and their Book Library has raised over £1000 in two years raising funds for the Village Hall. We are now delighted to welcome The Railway to The Portico community and that they have taken the opportunity to offer points under our Portico Loyalty Card Scheme. You can earn points on food and double points on food served on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Added to which, helped by our resident expert Hannah Gayler, Paul is now Tweeting on Twitter and using Facebook to let you all know what’s going on.

So how to describe The Railway at Ripple… Good Food, Great Beer, Real Community Spirit… that rare beast, a proper Village Pub!

THE FAMILY FIRM THAT’S STILL GOING STRONG In 1820 Haywards (Tewkesbury) Ltd was founded by George Hayward. He was a master cutter and started his business in Tewkesbury High Street in the year that King George died. The business expanded and at one point, had more than 70 employees. The branch in Upton on Severn opened in 1881 and it is still going strong. Kevin Smith is the Manager there and whilst he has been with the firm for approaching 13 years, the Company has such a history of long service that he has a way to go yet to beat Rupert who was based in the Tewkesbury branch and retired last year after 50 years of service. When I asked what keeps Kevin here, he said he likes the personal element of his job, “many people don’t like going to big stores when they need help or advice for example with DIY issues – we offer a friendly, knowledgeable service and a have a high number of regular customers”. Hayward’s is a real Aladdin’s Cave and you can find almost anything related to the household, DIY and Garden there – if you can’t they can order it for you at no additional charge. Also, they provide a Lawnmower Servicing and Repair service through their Tewkesbury branch – simply call in or phone Kevin or his team and they will arrange collection and delivery for you. The Hayward’s Building on the corner of New Street is one of the landmarks in Upton and it was once again in the limelight when Prince Charles visited the town in 2007 following the devastating floods.

During this month, the landmark Hayward’s window will be host to the Morgan Two Special Edition Bike, which is the fabulous prize on offer to Portico Loyalty Card Holders (see page 22 for details).

As we go to press, there are signs that Summer is finally arriving and if you take a look at Hayward’s pages, you will see some special offers to help you enjoy the great outdoors! Find them at – for today’s local special offers

Tenbury Wells

After a successful Tenbury Food Fayre, Tenbury Wells, the Town in the Orchard, is celebrating the Rural Countryside with the launch of a monthly Farmers & Craft Market , the first of which is being held on the morning of June 15th at The Royal Oak Hotel, in Market Street. Many local businesses have shown an interest in a Market to promote their products and to this end a group of local traders decided to create a series of Events to do just this. The organisers, all local Independent business owners, who wish to help increase the interest and footfall in Tenbury Wells seized the initiative and are introducing the Markets on a regular basis. These will be held on the third Saturday of the month with dates initially set until October, the month of the ever popular Applefest, which is on 12th October on The Burgage. Future dates for the new Tenbury Farmers & Craft Markets are: 20th July • 17th August 21st September • 19th October These will all be great opportunities to visit Tenbury Wells and browse the Independent Shops and take advantage of using the Portico Loyalty Card in participating outlets. Another, regular Event, is on 23rd June when we see the Party in the Park which is a free family fun day where the aim is that families attending can have a fun and free day out. The Event runs from midday until 5.00 p.m. with free fun for all the family. There are also Trade stands at the Event which promote local businesses. Tenbury Wells Local Policing Team has run this extremely successful event for the last 4 years and their reason for doing this is to give something back to the local communities that they serve. Last week we welcomed a new Mayor to Tenbury, Cllr. George Price, who takes over office from Cllr Sue Corfield, who had a very successful year as Mayor of Tenbury and who culminated her year of office with a fundraising Event ‘Hitz from the Blitz’ in The Regal, with lots of flag waving and nostalgia. We wish Cllr. Price all the best for a successful year.

3G vs 4G

What is 4G and what are the benefits over 3G?

There’s been a lot of mention in the media recently about 4G, and 3G/4G comparisons are often banded around to sell mobile phones and tablets. But what is the difference between 3G and 4G? The G stands for a generation of mobile technology, installed in phones and on cellular networks. 3G stands for 3rd generation and was first introduced in the U.S in 2003, designed to bring “mobile broadband”. 3G is currently the widest available option, but can be very slow and frustrating when trying to stream videos or upload pictures to Facebook. Next generation technology, 4G or fourth generation, hopes to bring the UK higher speeds for data transfer. Each further generation will offer faster Internet speeds than the last on the same carrier. 4G is starting off at around five times faster, but will eventually be eight to ten times faster in comparison to the current 3G network. As well as offering faster speeds, 4G also has a higher capacity due to its more efficient use of radio waves. It also has less latency than other mobile data networks, making it more suitable to voice, video or other streaming services. I hope you’re still following and we haven’t lost you yet... The UK’s first service was introduced in October 2012 by EE (Everything Everywhere), which also owns Orange and T-mobile brands. At the moment, 4G coverage is limited, but is currently present in over 50 towns and cities, covering half of the UK population. If you live in an area that doesn’t have 4G coverage, there’s no advantage at the moment to buying a 4G handset. If you do buy a 4G handset and 4G is not available, your phone will revert to the UK’s largest 3G network. Unfortunately, at the moment, new 4G handsets and contracts are more expensive than 3G but they will hopefully become cheaper in the future. If you do decide to switch to 4G, watch out for the data limits on your service plan as 4G uses up a lot of data very quickly.

Richard C Swift

Family Bakers & Confectioners since 1863

Hannah Swift, great, great aunt of Richard Swift, started baking 150 years ago, in the small Staffordshire village of Wheaton Aston. From that small beginning, and through 5 generations, one family now have shops in Clee Hill, Tenbury Wells, Ludlow and Craven Arms. In that first business, Hannah worked with her daughter until Tom, who was just 19, took up the reins. Tom had served his apprenticeship in bakeries in Bromsgrove, West Bromwich and Stafford. Tom married and had 7 children. One of his children, Charles, (Richard’s father), joined the business and worked

with his father learning the trade. During World War 2, Charles saw army service in Field bakeries, and, on his return, bought his own bakery in Gnosall, Staffordshire. Richard, by now the 4th generation to join the business, was born there. Richard served his apprenticeship at Gnosall, also attending Birmingham College of Food and Technology and worked his way up to become bakery manager at Gnosall. In 1978, Richard moved to Clee Hill, and started his own business, where the Swift bakery tradition continues to this day, with a 5th generation of bakers in John and Robert. Moving with the times, and embracing modern communication methods of Twitter, Facebook and Internet, the family have promoted the growth of their bakeries. In addition, they run bakery courses for the benefit of aspiring bakers and those who wish to learn more of the art of baking. Swifts have also extended their operations outside their stores. You will find them at many of our local events, such as the Tenbury Food Fayre, Malvern Spring Gardening Show, Ludlow Spring Festival, and many, many more. Not only do they exhibit at these events, they also provide demonstrations to the many throngs of people who want to learn more about the art of baking.

Swifts are a “must visit” bakery, whether that is in one of their stores, at an Event or attending a Bread2Bake course

Barnard’s Green

Barnard’s Green

Carnival Capers – Saturday 13th of July

Carnival Capers... Barnards Green traders are preparing for a busy and exciting time as preparations take place for the ‘Carnival Capers’ event they are holding on Saturday 13th of July. Traders have been planning for a couple of months and have decided to build on last year’s very successful ‘Crown the Green’ event which was part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. They have decided to again run a ‘Fun Dog Show’ as it was so popular last year. Experienced dog show judges will have the hard decision of deciding which dog has the waggiest tail, which is best behaved and the one they would most like to take home with them! Not an easy decision to make. However “all entrants are awarded a rosette for taking part so no-one seems to mind too much”, says Jane Knowles from Just So. Entry forms can be filled in online at or can be collected from Just So or The Toy Corner. It costs £2.50 to enter and all monies raised will go to Home-Start which helps local children and families and is based in Barnard’s Green.

The traders are also working with local schools and are encouraging primary aged children to ‘Plant a Bean in Barnards Green’. “We have sourced special ‘message beans’ which reveal a message when grown. We are planting the beans amongst brightly coloured water beads, which look fantastic” said Helen Portman from The Toy Corner. After six weeks, through the summer holiday there will be a race to see which bean grows the tallest and the winning child will win a prize of £50 of gardening vouchers from Guarlford Nursery, £25.00 for them and £25.00 for their school. “We chose this competition because it ties in with the Malvern in Bloom theme of ‘Edible Gardens’ and it is a really good idea to encourage children to grow things in a fun way” said Helen.

“We are really working hard to support the Malvern Carnival activities, and will be sending two decorated floats to take part in the procession which will travel twice round Barnards Green. One will have a ‘Victorian Circus’ theme and the other will be a ‘Butterfly Ball’. We particularly like this event because it involves all areas of Malvern and really encourages the community to get together, have fun and support a good cause” said Jane.

“See you there!”

Finally the traders are staging a ‘Barnards Green Bake Off’, where creative bakers young and old can have their cake judged and compete to win a cup and prizes. Entries need to be taken to the ‘Café in the Green’ before 11am. Afterwards the cakes will be sold off for the Home-Start charity. – for today’s local special offers

Pan-cooked fish with asparagus You can make this dish with all types of fish and as we all know, we are in Asparagus Country here in Worcestershire! Try and get a mixture of oily and white fish fillets, alongside things like shellfish, prawns and squid. You want everything to cook at the same time so just make sure everything is slice up into roughly equal pieces. It can also be cooked on the barbeque or steamed. Finish the dish off with extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and chilli as these flavours work very well together. Serves 2 Extra Virgin Olive oil Juice of 1 lemon 2 small red mullet or snapper fillets, scaled and pinboned 1 bream or sea bass fillet, scaled, pinboned and cut in half 2 small squid, gutted and cleaned, tentacles trimmed and reserved 2-4 freshly shelled scallops, cleaned and scored in criss-crosses 10 medium asparagus spears, woody ends removed 1 small handful thyme leaves 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and chopped Heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a

large frying pan. Score the skin of your fish fillets about 1cm deep all over and season with salt and pepper. Put the fish fillets into the pan, skin side down, with the squid tentacles. Add the scallops. Open out the squid by running a knife down one side then quickly lightly score the inside with criss-crosses. Lay them in the pan scored side down. Add the asparagus and gently shake the pan. Cook for a few minutes then turn everything over and cook on the other side. Sprinkle with thyme. When the fish has a crispy skin, the scallops are golden brown and the squid has curled up and is nicely chargrilled, remove the pan from the heat. Roughly slice the squid into pieces then return to the pan. Lay the fish fillets on the plates. Toss the asparagus, scallops and squid with half the chilli, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and the lemon juice. Lightly season and mix together. Divide on top of the plated fish, sprinkle with chilli and a little drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Serve and enjoy!

VIEW FROM THE VETS When we start to see advertisements for hay fever treatments on the television, we know at the vets we are going to start to see dogs and cats that are itching. The problem is, that itching is itching, and most of the lesions that we see on the skin are the same regardless of multiple possible causes. As the phrase goes “this is where the fun starts”.

The first step is to prove that there are no parasites involved, and these include fox mange and fleas. Malvern is quite unique in many ways, and one of those is the close proximity of the country to the town and at our practice we see more dogs with fox mange than fleas. This is an incredible statistic when you think about it and reflects the large urban fox population that harbours the mite and leaves it around for our dogs to catch. The small mites that cause mange are impossible to see with the naked eye, and burrow into the skin, often causing severe itching and a rash. Their favourite haunts on the body include the ear flaps, around the eyes, the elbows and along the undercarriage. As many other diseases can look the same, we sometimes need to look for the mites under a microscope after taking a skin scrape, and if the itching has been going on for a while, to do a blood test to prove exposure to the mites. If one thing is certain it is that treating fox mange is not simple, and none of the “over the counter” flea treatment products you can buy will treat the disease. A spot on treatment of Advocate or Stronghold, or a bath of Aludex, are the only effective licensed products to treat mange. At the practice we now almost always use Advocate, as it can be used regularly to prevent as well as treat the disease. As always, we would encourage you to seek advice from your vet if your pet suddenly starts to itch. You would be surprised how often it is not fleas! From Masefield Vets we wish all of Malvern’s Pet owners a happy start to Spring and an enjoyable time in some of the World’s best dog walking.

New look shop front in Barnards Green There is a new look shop front in Barnard’s Green. “The Cold Chef” has been re-branded as “The Cold Chef Catering Company”. “I decided the name should better reflect the type of business service we offer”, said Stephen Knowles, who has operated the business since 2005 “We wanted to show that we cater for business and social events, as well as having the sandwich and home-baked goods in our shop at the front”. Over half our business is providing local companies and individuals with high quality buffets, personally tailored to meet the client’s needs and budgets”. Stephen has had quite a career in catering. He started as a schoolboy in Newmarket, helping in the local pub, to provide shooting lunches for the nearby Delamere Estate. “I served Lord Mountbatten and his long term friend Barbara Cartland”, said Stephen. “I have always enjoyed meeting people from different backgrounds, and working in the catering industry is a great way to do that”. “I graduated from Westminster Hotel School, and started working as an Assistant Manager

in large London Hotels. My last job in London was to open, what was at that time, the largest Holiday Inn in Europe”. “However, my dream was always to own my own establishment, and so, in 1993, together with my wife Jane, we purchased the Holdfast Cottage Hotel, in Little Malvern. It was hard work, as we also had a very young family. We were proud to be awarded 2 AA Rosettes for food quality, (the first hotel in Malvern to do so). Later, we were nominated as one of Paddy Burt’s “Hotel of the Year”, and featured in her column in the Daily Telegraph. I will never forget opening the paper on Sunday morning, and seeing our name and the write up. We had phone calls of congratulations all day!”.

that exists in Malvern. The Morgan Car Company attracts up to 3000 visitors a month, and it is good to know that our food and service is part of the experience that visitors enjoy and take away with them”. The smart new green sign and front is also echoed on the new look website, that contains sample menus and a build-your-own-buffet option. The Cold Chef will be operating The Portico loyalty scheme and will be offering extra Portico points each month on certain goods. Please check out on The Portico website.

“I enjoy, and am proud of the fact, that most of the goods are hand baked on the premises. I make the soups daily, we roast the pork and serve it in hot, fresh baked baguettes. Our famous chocolate oaty cakes are made to a personal recipe; and our brandied mince pies are made with our own mincemeat and hand-made, hand rolled, pastry”. “Personal service is also a priority, and I love visiting local companies, such as the Morgan Motor Company, and delivering buffets and being part of the great spirit of enterprise – for today’s local special offers
