Every problem that the country faces is being solved in some community by some group or some individual. The question is how to get connected so that the whole nation can solve problems. A volunteer is a person who can see what others cannot see; who can feel what most do not feel. Often, such gifted persons do not think of themselves as volunteers, but as citizens - citizens in the fullest sense; partners in civilization. Since 1999, MNSH has paid par cular a en on to crea ng a specialized volunteer civil protec on team in order to be able to carry out tasks of various levels of difficulty in response to civil emergency and natural disaster situa ons. MNSH civil protec on team is a member of the Civil Emergence Commission in the Region of Shkodra. The cold weather and the heavy snow fall, in January and February 2012, created a difficult situa on for Northern Albania's popula on, isola ng them from the rest of the country. The situa on was par cularly difficult for the Roma communi es living in tents and cabins in the outskirts of Shkodra. The Civil Protec on Team of MNSH prepared and distributed hot meals for 250 Roma people (nearly half of them children) on a daily basis. The medical staff also provided medical services to this community.

Northern Albania, such as the most remote mountain area of Vermosh. MNSH con nued to directly assist people in the villages of Boge, Bratosh, and Sheldi with basic medical supplies. In addi on, MNSH donated medical supplies to the Directorate of Public Health of Malësi e Madhe for other isolated villages.

Nurses from the Public Health Service who collaborate with MNSH medical structure have also been provided with first aid/emergency medical supplies and an bio cs in order to provide ambulatory medical assistance to the popula on of the villages where Malteser Albania operates.

Following a request from the Directorate of Public Health of Malësi e Madhe District (North of Albania), MNSH delivered first aid and donated emergency medical supplies and an bio cs to remote communes of

MNSH volunteers' service with different ages and categories

MNSH established a social center at the Village of Peace in the outskirts of Shkodra in the year 2000. Malteser volunteers go there twice a week and work with Roma and Gypsy children, teaching and organizing dierent ac vi es according to the volunteers' schedules. The work with Roma children, numbering about 200, is focused on educa onal ac vi es, integra on ac vi es (visits to other schools, visits to sport centers, summer school camps), and informa ve ac vi es (informa on about school subjects, children rights). These ac vi es have resulted in a reduc on of the number of children who beg in the streets, work in the forced labour market, or don't a end school. The Malteser volunteers have also contributed in working with girls and women of these communi es, organizing a series of ac vi es such as health educa on training, p ro m o n g ge n d e r e q u a l i t y, educa onal and voca onal training, entertainment a ernoons, etc.

Portraits of Graciano our Kepi volunteers

I came to know “Malteser Ndihmon në Shqipëri” some months ago, when a Malteser team was holding a First Aid training course with students of my school. I decided to become a Malteser volunteer a er I was presented with the goals and the ac vi es of the organiza on.

Anything done for another is done for oneself Pope John Paul II

Jesmina Dagistani

I was a racted by the devo on and commitment towards the people in need. What I love most is the me I spend with disabled children at the house of Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity. I try to never miss the weekly ac vi es with the disabled children and the young girls and be as helpful as possible to those who need some care and love. I met by chance some of the Malteser volunteers and they told me about Malteser and its ac vi es. It sounded very interes ng and I decided to come and see it with my own eyes and then I told myself why not offer my contribu on. I was impressed and encouraged by the ac vi es the volunteers were doing under the mo o Tui o fidei et obsequium pauperum. I have no words to describe how happy I feel when I am among people to whom I can offer a simple smile, a caress, a warm word and they feel loved. What I love most is the summer camp we have with children from the Roma and Gypsy communi es and children from remote areas and also the weekly ac vity with the disabled children and girls at the house Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity.

MOUNTAIN PROJECT Providing basic medical service in the mountain areas of Northern Albania

The mountain project is the MNSH’s main project. It started since MNSH was founded as a response to the urgent need for medical service in the mountain areas. In 1993 the state medical structures were not able to provide basic medical service in the remote mountain villages of Vermosh, Vukel, Kozhnje, Muriq, Selcë, Rapsh, Karmë, Gomsiqë, Bogë, Bratosh, and Sheldi. In these extremely poor zones there were no doctors to visit the people; no pharmacies or ambulatory health care, and also no money to buy medicine. The transporta on of the sick or the injured to the Hospitals in Shkodra or Malësi e Madhe was made

mostly on foot –taking several hours- or occasionally by the rare private vehicles driving in those villages. During 2012 the project was focused in three mountain villages, Bogë, Bratosh and Sheldi covering a popula on of about four thousand inhabitants, who for many years, suffer the lack or the inexistence of state health services. The M N S H’s medical team provides basic medical services, such as: medical visits, necessary therapy treatment, laboratory medical analyses, medical specialist consulta ons, emergency transports to hospitals and health educa on training for the local popula on.

Health Educa on ac vi es con nued intensively, especially during periods of high risk of infec ous diseases. In collabora on with the State Health Structures, especially the Shkodra Regional Epidemiology Directorate, training was provided in the remote areas to the medical staff, doctors and nurses dealing with diagnosis of breast cancer in women of different age groups. Posters on awareness about breast cancer were distributed. I n t h e f ra m e w o r k o f t h e Mountain Project, at the Malteser center in Shkodër, it has been opened and it is con nuously offering services, a small, but effec ve ambulatory. This ambulatory provides free medical assistance to Roma and Egyp an popula on, u n i n s u r e d , marginalized, underprivileged people coming from the outskirts of Shkodra or mountain zones to the city for b e e r l i v i n g condi ons. Except offering medical assistance, the people who do not have health insurance are offered advice and help to enter in the insurance scheme.

COMMUNITY AND COMPETENCE CENTER Working with disabled people Since 2007, every week Malteser Albania volunteers have worked with 60 disabled children and 25 young adult girls who are residents at the house “Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity”. The volunteers spend me with them, giving them friendship and love. The volunteers assist the Sisters in preparing meals, feeding the children, accompanying them during their free me, organizing outdoor walks, and home cinema sessions for the young girls. On special days and events, MNSH assists with the organiza on of ac vi es held for disabled people in the care of the Regional Disabled Center for Children where 62 resident children and 40 children in day care are looked a er. An Informa on Center for marginalized people, children with mental and physical impairments, disabled elderly people, people with limited opportuni es etc, was opened in 2012 and a toll free telephone number was established. The interested people are provided the opportunity to meet medical and legal experts and to receive informa on. One of the most important points of the Informa on Center is the ac vity held with the au s c people, which include: - General assessment of the au s c person - Disorder assessment of au sm spectrum - Detailed assessment of the development level - Assessment of specific needs of the person - Logopedic treatment There are 21 children aged 3 to 16 years who are treated in the Center and almost all are of the au s c spectrum. The Center operates twice a week, according to a schedule set by the therapist. A special emphasis is given to mee ng with parents who are interested in their child's performance as well as on methods a n d te c h n i q u e s n e c e s s a r y fo r t h e con nuity of the work. During these mee ngs, thoughts on a wide field of ac on

are exchanged, such as parent-teachertherapist collabora on, the difficul es encountered in the integra on of children in kindergarten and school environments, informa on on au sm, legal ways to benefit KMCAP and many other problems, which are iden fied and worry parents. All of the children are treated by an on staff Speech Therapist (logopedist), who

assesses the au s c spectrum of the children, evaluates the skills, needs, and applicable interven on techniques, and compiles a plan based on these data, which is applied concerning the child's performance and the con nua on of therapy. This is always done in close coopera on with the parents, giving space to their sugges ons.
