Get Your Festival Fix with

Minety Music Festival 2019 Minety Music Festival burst onto the festival circuit in 2017 and in a short space of time has become one of the ”go to” festivals in the calendar. They’re back for 2019 with the best line up yet as well as their trade mark features: - a huge, free Kidszone (including FREE slacklining, FREE indoor caving, FREE circus skills workshops, FREE inflatables , bouncy castles, slides, assault courses), great food and local stalls. This year the family ethos has, once again been at the forefront of planning with the addition of the Treehouse Teen tent – a teen only zone with chill out space, instruments for jamming and computer and video equipment, as well as the all-important WiFi! Music lovers will be well served with nearly 60 acts on this year’s line-up and the addition of an acoustic stage. With so much local music talent, bands from all across Wilshire and surrounding areas will play alongside headline acts including the mighty Toploader and the iconic Republica as well as Abba versus Elvis Friday night mayhem (fancy dress warmly encouraged) and the hugely popular silent disco! One of the key things that makes Minety special is the atmosphere, which is helped by knowledge that all the profits from the festival are distributed between local charities Wiltshire Air ambulance, Naomi House Hospice and Jacksplace and supporting local causes – Minety Primary School and Minety Pre School. The bar is always well stocked with local beers and ciders, and for the more refined pallet, there is a Cocktail TikI Bar and a Gin and Prosecco waggon! There is also top quality coffee for the morning after the night before! Onsite camping is FREE too, so you can really get into the festival spirit There is a breakfast bar and on site shop too if the coffee isn’t going to cut it!

Thomas Hobbes

Malmesbury’s Noteworthy Political Philosopher The Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury Society (THoMS) was set up to promote the discussion of the ideas of Thomas Hobbes. In doing so we hope that we shall make more people in Malmesbury aware of their most famous son, who by general consensus is England’s pre-eminent political philosopher. The centrepiece of the Society’s activities is the Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury Day, which this year is on Saturday 1st June. This whole day event has two parts, a symposium and a concert. The symposium takes place in The Old Bell Hotel and the concert in the Julia and Hans Rausing Building (formerly the Moravian Church). The theme of this year’s symposium is Hobbes, Machiavelli and Italy when the speakers will be world leaders in Hobbes studies: Professor Quentin Skinner, the leading expert in the field, Dr. Raffaella Santi from the University of Urbino in Italy and, thirdly, Dr. Luc Foisneau who wrote his doctorate on Hobbes and is Director of Research at the The National Centre for Scientific Research

(CNRS) in Paris. The Hobbes Day will end with a concert of 17th century English and Italian baroque music performed by a young trio from the ensemble Music for Awhile under the Artistic Directorship of Professor Margaret Faultless in the refurbished Moravian Church. Hobbes visited Italy on three occasions when he met leading social thinkers of the 17th century including Galileo. The musicians have chosen works by English and Italian composers some of whom Hobbes, himself a lute player, would have known. Their choice ranges from Monteverdi, Castello and Fontana to music by John Dowland (who may have been at Chatsworth when Hobbes lived there) and Handel. Tickets for both events, which can be purchased separately, are available from the Workbox, Malmesbury High Street, and on-line at hobbes. eventbrite.com

Malmesbury Against Plastic For the past two years or so since the airing of Blue Planet 2, you could barely go a day without one news story or another covering plastic pollution and the impact it’s having on our world. Anxious about the impact that this plastic is having on our own community and the impact of our waste on the wider environment, a small group of us from Malmesbury and surrounding Parishes have been working towards gaining Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Community status for our town. Their framework covers five different strands – from local governance, to engaging local community groups and businesses.

closely with the Town Council. Over 600 people joined us on the day from as far as Worcestershire. From guest speakers including local politicians, environmental activists and the CEO of a local technology company at the global forefront of recycling innovation, to film screenings, a plastic-free market and a children’s room – the day was a great success.

Last year, you may have heard about or even attended a festival we held at Malmesbury Town Hall, working

Since then, we’ve been to visit and have been hugely impressed with the enthusiasm of our local Beaver and Scout groups and were thrilled to hear recently that Malmesbury Primary School has become the first in the region to sign up to become a Plastic Free School. Earlier in March, we held a free screening of the award All Aspects of 1st and 2nd Fix winning documentary and Kitchens film, A Plastic Bespoke Fitted Furniture Ocean. It was Hanging Doors hard hitting, but words of Fencing, Decking and Patios inspiration Sheds and Shepherd Huts from Cllr Gavin Grant Timber Framing to “demand better” showed the power of individual action.

Exemplifying

the power of individual action perfectly, at her first meeting of the Malmesbury Area Board, our new Community Engagement Manager Penny Bell gained a commitment from them to go single-use plastic free. With hopes that the other 17 Area Boards in Wiltshire will follow Malmesbury’s lead, the change could save over 3,240 cups from going to landfill each year! The Wild Food Co was the first business to be awarded Plastic Free Champion status. Building on the work they’ve already done, including introducing a refill section for liquids such as hand soap, washing up liquid and clothes detergent, we’re really excited about the work to come, including plans to install gravity dispensers so that we can go and refill our dried goods. Their work so far has saved over 500 extra bottles from going to landfill. We have plenty more plans in the pipeline ourselves. Come along to a Plastic Free Picnic at St Aldhelm’s Mead from 12 til 3 on Saturday 22nd of June. Everyone is welcome at this free, mid-summer celebration... just bring yourselves and your favourite plastic free snacks! There will be green games and information for anyone interested in reducing their plastic footprint. We’d love to hear from anyone interested in getting involved in the campaign so get in touch at malmesburyagainstplastic@outlook.com and follow us on social media for news and other events.

for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is simple, freshly prepared to the highest standards. There is no fast food here. Well loved favourites such as cider infused French Onion Soup heaped with melted cheese and croutons, spicy welsh rarebit, whose orange, picant toppings bubble under the grill. Fiery devilled crab; hand picked Atlantic shrimp to give the sweetest prawn cocktails, gently smoked mackerel pates and shiny, rich duck rillettes are just some of the starters. Followed by hen pheasant stroganoff, paprika’d and creamy with heavenly spiced rice. Roast chicken and woodland mushroom pies with crusty domes of puff pastry and cottage pies topped with swirls of baked potato mash with steaming bowls of buttery garden peas. There are fat and fluffy fishcakes with home made tartar sauce balanced on bundles of spinach; best

Butchers steaks perched over the softest fondant potatoes with garlic fried woodland mushrooms and swirls of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic reduction; famous Albert Enderby’s smoked haddock kedgeree with an aromatic madras curried sauce... so many delicious dishes and so much time and care given and the end result is mouth watering. The message here is relaxed, elegant and classy. British dining at its best. Quayles Cornerhouse, like Tetbury is a destination place. A whole day visit, a fleeting coffee and cake, a shopping trip with friends or a gentle saunter through winding streets, Tetbury provides the perfect backdrop and Quayles Cornerhouse provides the perfect place.

May: National Walking Month National Walking Month is an annual campaign to promote the benefits of walking. It is perhaps walking that is the most accessible exercise, available to all regardless of current levels of fitness or income. Your health Walking gives your leg muscles and lungs a workout; reduces stress; helps you sleep; burns excess calories; and reduces your risk of osteoporosis, cancer, depression and Type 2 diabetes. Phew, that sounds so good it should be prescribed. The NHS says even just a brisk 10-minute daily walk has many health benefits, counting towards your recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. A brisk pace is around 3 miles an hour – if you’re relatively fit, you should still be able to talk, but not sing a song. The free NHS Active 10 app handily tells you when you’re walking fast enough and suggests

ways to fit in more brisk walking. Particularly through the late spring and summer, walking outside will top-up your levels of Vitamin D which is good for your bone health and your immune system. Be sociable – or get alone time

Walking: so good for you, it should be prescribed. Walking can be a chance to chat with your friends and family. Nordic walking classes, a Walking for Health walk, or a walking group such as the Ramblers (formerly the Ramblers Association) are ideal if you don’t have anyone to walk with. However, you may prefer to use walks as a chance for some time to yourself. You could listen to music which can

help you get into a rhythm and walk faster If you are concerned about wearing headphones while you walk, look at AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones. These sit on bones on the sides of your head but not in your ears, meaning you can still hear traffic. Raise money for a good cause For National Walking Month, the British Heart Foundation is promoting the Just Walk initiative to encourage you to raise money in an organised walk. Tying in with this is their Walk to School Week from the 16th to the 20th May, where they ask teachers, parents and children to put their best foot forward and walk to school each day. How and where to walk You can either set aside time for walking or just build it into your daily routine and journeys. Could you get the family out for an afterdinner walk or take a weekend ramble that ends at a pub or restaurant? • Wear supportive, suitable footwear. If you are walking to work, you could take a smarter pair of shoes with you to change into. • Stay hydrated. Always take a drink with you if you’re planning to walk for more than 20 minutes or it’s hot. • Always consider the terrain and the weather, especially if you’re heading off the beaten track. Do you need warm and/ or waterproof clothing, headgear and footwear? Do you have snacks, drinks, a first aid kit and a charged mobile phone? An internet search will return innumerable resources to help you both start and stick with it, not just for May but throughout the year.

Let Physio Excellence help you with your aches and injuries

Physio Excellence has clinics in Malmesbury and Sherston GP Surgeries If you need an experienced opinion and treatment for your aches and pains or sports injuries, Heather McKibbin, who established Physio Excellence in Lacock over 20 years ago, is well placed to help you. Having expanded to clinics in Malmesbury and Sherston GP surgeries almost 10 years ago, she is known and respected by both GP’s and orthopaedic consultants in the area and believes good communication between herself and your doctor, unless against the patient’s wishes, is important for rounded care. In addition to a Masters Degree in Physiotherapy with research into whiplash and knee replacements, Heather was a physiotherapist at Bath Rugby for 6 seasons and England Lacrosse. Her excellent diagnostic skills and experience has been developed further by working as an Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Specialist in NHS orthopaedic consultant clinics, alongside the consultants in spines, hips and knees. This is a position for more experienced physiotherapists and the extended training enabled her in NHS clinics to refer patients for MRI’s and X-Rays.

16

Malmesbury ... connections

Accurate diagnosis results in treatment being directed at the correct area from the outset but Heather always looks at the whole person as often compensations develop elsewhere. She offers a wealth of treatment techniques and advice to solve your problem and gives you things to help yourself so you do not need to return regularly for ‘top up’ treatments. Whilst covered by all main health insurers, she is mindful that self-funding patients do not have endless resources. Heather is part of a team of 4 Chartered Physiotherapists at Physio Excellence and each has their own expertise which Heather calls on. They offer acupuncture, Pilates lead by a Physiotherapist at Stanton and a fabulous Hydrotherapy facility near junction 17. Physiotherapy in water uses buoyancy to help or resist movement and is fantastic for pain, joint replacements, frozen shoulders and many other conditions. The clinic welcomes all ages from children to elderly requiring home visits. Please call the main Lacock Clinic for further information until our new website is launched 01249 730132

Former RAF Squadron Leader and high-risk diver publishes first book between life and death. “Getting this right means developing an understanding of individual and team behaviours, sometimes when operating under extreme stress, and then being able to collect important and/or relevant information, make effective decisions and lead the team to the benefit of all.” Gareth’s first book uses his experience and knowledge gained through his 25-year career with the RAF and as an experienced diver to demonstrate a new way of thinking and planning to avoid errors which can cost lives.

. Under Pressure has already been endorsed by well-known names in the world of diving and underwater sports like explorer and Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society Phil Short and diver-health expert and rebreather instructor Dr Douglas Ebersole. Phil said: “I feel this book is an essential teaching tool for all instructors and instructor trainers in diver education, to all members of a diving or other expedition and in addition an essential addition to every diver’s library. The layout is logical and makes learning simple.”

Doug said: “As long as we only look at the diver and not the system as a whole, we are unlikely to make diving safer. The case studies and analysis show how experts can make mistakes and how they survived to tell the tale.

He said: “Most accidents and incidents are believed to be down to ‘human error’. Every one of us makes mistakes every day, even the experts. But categorising as ‘human error’ does a disservice to people who create safety in what they do. “Attributing ‘human error’ as the cause means we often focus on the outcomes rather than the failures in decision-making, situational awareness, communication, team work or the impact of stress and fatigue. “In diving, errors which are not trapped or mitigated can ultimately mean the difference

SCHOOL FEES PLANNING Funding school fees is a big financial commitment for a family and can be a source of considerable concern for some parents. Providing a good education can be one of the most valuable gifts parents or grandparents can give to children. Parents therefore continue to recognise the value that independent education can offer – but it isn’t getting any cheaper. Latest figures show that average fees for non-boarders at a residential senior school come in around £4,000 per term, while boarders pay in the region of £6,600 per term1.While the financial implications can be daunting, the key to affording school fees is to plan as early as you can. Saving soon after a child is born gives ten years to build a fund for when they go to secondary school. Generally, parents looking to fund school fees fall into three categories – those who want to invest a lump sum, those who would like to spread the cost of fees, or parents and those wanting to set up a regular savings scheme. There are several schemes available to help make school fees more affordable, and an experienced wealth manager can draw up a bespoke investment plan that can be both tax-efficient and flexible. For example, you could consider using your annual tax-free ISA allowance. By investing the maximum amount permitted in an ISA and selecting

funds run by full-time professional investment managers, a tidy sum could be accumulated in the space of ten years. For grandparents, trust* planning can be a useful tool if they wish to make provision for school fees and achieve Inheritance Tax (IHT) benefits at the same time. If they make regular payments from their income without reducing the standard of their lifestyle, then these gifts are not counted as part of their estate for IHT purposes. Another option is to give a lump sum for their grandchildren’s education: provided they survive for a further seven years, the gift is free of IHT. Grandparents might also want to consider other solutions, such as life assurance, to help increase the funds created for grandchildren. This can be very useful when there is more than one child you wish to provide for. With interest rates still at an all-time low, and the country only slowly coming out of recession, it is important to make your investments work for you as hard as possible. Today, it is more important than ever to be fully aware of all the solutions available so you can make an informed choice.

Young Hullavington based Rider to take on World’s best at Badminton Hullavington based Alicia Hawker (25) and her equine partner Charles RR are set to take on the World’s best at Badminton CCI5* Horse Trials for the second time this May. “I started riding before I can remember. My first pony was called Kitkat, he was only 10.2hh high! I always wanted to do something with horses and when I was 12 I set my heart on Eventing. Badminton became my dream. Being a local rider, I can remember walking the course and going on XC day. As I did more Eventing in my early teens I started to fully appreciate the XC, and always watched at home on telly so I could see more. I would watch from start to finish! As the years passed the XC began to look a bit more jumpable, and walking the course in 2017 I thought we would have a pretty good shot at getting round,” says Alicia. Alicia has self-produced many horses, and gained multiple wins and placings in Senior International competi-

tion. Having completed her first ever event with Charlie almost seven years ago, Alicia “cannot wait” to give Badminton another go this year. Widely considered as the World’s Premier 3-Day Event and staged within the beautiful grounds of the Badminton Estate, this year’s event takes place from Wednesday 1st May through to Sunday 5th May 2019. Attracting over 200,000 visitors over 5 days, Badminton regularly takes up it’s place as one of the top 10 largest sporting events in the UK. And it is in front of these enormous crowds that Bath University Sports Corporate Events  Filming Performance BSc (Hons) Bespoke Weddings  Photo Shoots graduate Alicia hopes to Clay Shoots  Charity Events finish even further up the Music festivals  Fishing Syndicate DON’T FORGET TO STAY leader board than the top WARM AND BUY YOUR LOGS! 50 placing that she and “Charlie” achieved on Estate Office, Charlton Park Estate, Malmesbury, Wiltshire SN16 9DG Tel: 01666 822146 their debut last year. estateoffice@charltonparkestate.com Photo credit Tim Wilkinwww.charltonparkestate.com son Photography

BIG BOOK WEEKEND AT TETBURY GOODS SHED MAY 3- 6 Tetbury Goods Shed, in conjunction with the town’s Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, is running a Big Book Weekend over the early May Bank Holiday, with nearly two dozen writers, critics and academics coming to the town to celebrate and explore new writing. The weekend, is in effect, a mini book festival, and will feature a wide range of novelists, from prize winners Ali Smith and Melissa Harrison, through to acclaimed new authors Mel Golding and Mandy Robotham, and crime writer Claire Mackintosh will talking about her new book on life in the Cotswolds. Authors as varied as Francis Pryor (of Time Team) and Sophie Ratcliffe will be introducing work on subjects as diverse as archaeology, medieval sculpture and the history of love. Poetry features strongly with Richard Eyre talking about his autobiographical poems, and William Sieghart brings his Poetry Pharmacy to town!

For foodies, forager John Wright, author of several River Cottage Handbooks, will be taking a group for a foraging walk along the footpath to collect food which will then be cooked back at The Goods Shed with the local Velo Bakery for all to enjoy! The weekend will also feature Litwitchure, the tarot-reading literary mystics, and a series of book-binding workshops with the Travelling Bookbinder, Rachel Hazell, as well as talks by academics on topics ranging from gender in children’s picture books to whether computing actually improves our lives! In short there is something for everyone over the weekend. For more information and to book tickets please visit our website: www.shed-arts.co.uk

Sherston brings you the World’s only POP up Village The World’s only POP up Village (17th-19th May 2019), Sherston - Bringing a community together The world’s first POP up village brought a whole community together and raised over £11,000 for charity in 2013 and 2016. We are back bigger than ever with 49 POP up shops and experiences in homes and gardens around Sherston on one awesome family weekend! Check out www.popupsherston.com for all the details. POPs only last three hours and they will be popping up and down all over Sherston 17th-19th May 2019. It’s all about community with some lovely people (with very different day jobs!) sharing their skills and talents for one weekend only. MORE ON POP: So, what does the weekend have in store for visitors? You can pick and choose what you want to do but if you did want to do EVERYTHING then your weekend would look

like you the night at home-

something this.... can start weekend on Friday The Fab Family Show with a made kofta or two.

Step out of your door on Saturday morning feeling refreshed and check out POP HQ on the high street for the POP map. Retreat to enjoy a breakfast waffle at The BIG Breakfast while you make your plans! Check out the Living Statues on the High street outside the Sherston Co-operative Stores. Then it’s off to the Eco Warrior Workshop, POP in to build a boat or dabble in the Slime Station. That’s if you haven’t decided to enjoy a Thai Hand Massage or a Shanti Yoga Retreat. Jay’s Thai Kitchen is a must for lunch and then why not try your hand at Boule or perhaps stop off at the wonderful

Dog Leg Fair. Followed by campfire cooking with a quick detour to Fudgepocalypse. Of course, on the way you may have decided to visit the Circus of Science or the Freakshake Shack. Perhaps enjoy a spot of golf at the picturesque POPA-Putt course (Wiltshires’s only 6 hole golf course) at the end of the day....before heading off to our 19th hole Cocktail Making Masterclass. Finishing off at the huge Disco Bingo it’s a thing (think dancing on benches while playing bingo)! The above is just some of Saturday and we could go on to Sunday....in fact we can’t help ourselves how could we not mention sailing a homemade boat on the river, the ultimate bacon butty delivery service, the puzzle trail, Scoops ’n Smiles Ice cream parlour, the film studio, instant photo booth, the yummy pick and mix sweets, Games Cafe and the Strongs close ‘Take Back The Streets’ afternoon! POP is about a whole community coming together and having fun and if that’s not reason enough did we mention you will be helping raise money for Sherston Primary School and Sherston Village Hall. Check out on all latest news on Facebook: POP up Sherston or www.popupsherston.com. We are looking forward to welcoming you to POP 2019 - its going to be a jam-packed weekend of fun!

A Life Like No Other Take a trip into another time and another life. Or stay in your own life and be inspired by ideas of selfimprovement. This month’s reads will certainly make you pause to reflect. The Familiars – Stacey Halls 1612 is a dangerous time to be a woman in Northern England, as King James has declared war on witches. Fleetwood is 17 and pregnant for the fourth time. Her other pregnancies ended in miscarriage. Desperate not to miscarry this child or lose her own life in childbirth, she turns to a local midwife, Alice Grey. When Alice gets accused of witchcraft, Fleetwood has to decide how far she’ll go to save her friend. Loosely based on the Pendle witch trials, this is a gripping, atmospheric page-turner. Voices of Powerful Women – Zoe Sallis When Maya Angelou calls something a ‘fascinating collection’, you know you’re in for a treat and Voices of Powerful Women certainly doesn’t disappoint. Zoe Sallis interviewed 40 women for her book, including Judi Dench, Tracey Emin, Benazir Bhutto and Mariane Pearl. Each one gives us a glimpse into what made her who she is today. You’ll learn what inspires these women, what angers them, who they admire and what advice they want to pass on to the next generation. Louis & Louise – Julie Cohen A baby is born in 1970s Maine, USA. In one reality she’s a girl – Louise; in the other, a boy – Louis. Both have the same friends, the same interests and the same ambitions. Both flee from their hometown after one fateful

night that changes everything. Thirteen years later, Lou’s mother is dying, so he/she returns to face the past. Original, thought-provoking and highly enjoyable, Louis & Louise is perfect for book clubs. The Energy Plan – James Collins Nutritionist James Collins is a world leader in the field of performance nutrition. He’s guided the eating habits of Olympic athletes and premier sports stars. His first book, The Energy Plan, is not about cutting out food groups, quick fix diets or denial. Instead, it’s about fuelling your body so it performs better and you feel fitter, have more energy and can fight off illnesses. The Energy Plan is well worth a read, whether you’re training for a marathon or just want to avoid the 3pm energy slump.

make up for in character. The book includes floorplans, advice and lots of lust-worthy photographs. Whether you’re thinking of building your own tiny home, want some tips to make the most of smaller rooms or just fancy taking a peek into how other people live, Micro Living is for you. The Honey Bus – Meredith May With a depressed single mother who could barely get out of bed, Meredith relied on her grandfather for love and solace. She also found another avenue for learning life’s lessons – her grandfather’s bees. Through the hive, Meredith learned about family, loyalty, self-sacrifice and resilience. A thoughtprovoking memoir.

Micro Living – Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen This book takes the concept of downsizing to the extreme. Many of the 40 homes featured are smaller than 150 square feet. From a refurbished Airstream to a treehouse, what these homes lack in space, they more than

A Malmesbury charity providing valuable services seeks assistance Since 1992 Malmesbury & District Community Transport (charity No.1015125) has been providing vital transport services for elderly and disabled people in the Malmesbury area. At present the charity’s main function is to provide transport for elderly people, taking them from their homes to the Athelstan House day centre where they can receive care. The provision of this service means that many of our customers don’t have to go into full-time care and can stay in their own homes; affording a degree of independence and dignity in their latter years. Additionally we provide the same service to those whose carers may need a day a week respite. Also the service gives many of our clients the opportunity to meet others; a respite from their daily isolation. The charity is currently providing transport to residents in about half of the parishes and villages around Malmesbury. Although MDCT does receive some income

from users of the service, in recent years the charity and the users had become reliant on a Wiltshire Council contract. When this came to an end in November 2017, a significant hole appeared in the organisation’s finances. The charity’s trustees have been working hard to improve the organisation’s finances ensuring that the vital community service can be provided for years to come. However there remains a significant gap between the charity’s projected income and expenditure with a loss of over £12k for the year ending 31 December 2018. This is likely to increase this year, The Board of Trustees would again like to inform parish/town councils in the area that they are likely to approach them formally in the near next two year or seek assistance in continuing to provide the service for their residents. If you would like any more information, or if you have any ideas about how you could help the charity, please contact Phil Rice (01666 824007/07979 694981).

Chippenham Male Voice Choir is looking for new talent !

Are you one of the many people who sing in the shower or at work, or perhaps you are an inveterate whistler or hummer? Do you like most forms of good music whether it be Bach, Beatles or Queen? Would you enjoy mixing with as friendly a group of men as you could wish to meet? You would?  Then Chippenham Male Voice Choir is for you.   Rehearsals are well under way for this season at St Peter’s Church, Frogwell, Chippenham and will continue each Monday night for what is now our 79th year. Don’t worry about rehearsals though. Under the watchful eye of musical director Howard Topper they are hard work but great fun, and the satisfaction you get when everything comes together ( literally) in harmony can’t be beaten . And you don’t have to be able to read music, though it helps if you can .   The choir has established a reputation localy for giving concerts for charity and other occasions to many appreciative audiences. We

have been involved in the past with visits to Chippenhams twin town La Fleche in the Loir Valley, to Cornwall and to South Wales. Interested ? Then why not give it a try? Ring Choir Chairman Phil Dyke on 01249 782692 or just turn up on a Monday night for rehearsal at 7:30pm St Peter’s Church, Frogwell, Chippenham, where you’ll be made really welcome.   Further information about the choir, including details of hiring the choir for a function, can be found on our website www.chipmvc. co.uk. We are also now on “Facebook” at Chippenham Male Voice Choir so visit the site and “Follow” us and keep up to date with all of our news and reviews.

MALMESBURY LEAGUE OF FRIENDS BUYS 14 LAPTOPS FOR JULIA’S HOUSE

Malmesbury League of Friends (MLOF) has purchased 14 new laptop computers, at a cost of £7,500, for use by nurses at Devizes-based charity Julia’s House. The new laptops will enable the nurses’ IT equipment to be upgraded, providing improved access to its patient database, wherever they are working. This will allow the nurses to access each child’s bespoke care plan and to update notes immediately. Julia’s House has been caring for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions in Dorset for 15 years and, in 2017, helped by a donation of £25,000 from MLOF, it opened its second hospice in Devizes. Mark Edwards, Julia’s House Chief Executive, said: “ We are enormously grateful for this second donation from MLOF. By increasing our efficiency, reducing administration and working smarter, our wonderful nurses will be able to devote even more time to the children and their families who so desperately need our care.” David Hide, MLOF Chairman, said: “ We are delighted to provide further funds for this amazing charity, which currently supports more than 30 families in Wiltshire with expert care, including two local Malmesbury families.”

An Evening of 17th Century English and Italian Baroque Music

The show “Captain Swing and the Blacksmith” brings alive the novel, of the same name, by Beatrice Parvin. The result is a new genre of performance, a ‘folk operetta’, set against the backdrop of the “Swing Riots” by agricultural workers that spread across the country to Wiltshire by the 1830s. This riotous tale of passion and tragedy, set on Salisbury Plain, is dramatised with words, songs and music through spellbinding voices, fiddle wizardry and accordion virtuosity. The company promises you a splendid evening of entertainment. Refreshments available or BYO wine. Tickets cost £10.00 adult; £8.00 concession; £5.00 child.
