“Panda By: Alejandra Toledo Pandas are bears from south central China. They are easily recognized by the large, distinctive black patches around their eyes, over the ears, and across their round body. The giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central China, mainly in the Sichuan province, but also in the Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. For many decades, the precise taxonomic classification of the giant panda was under debate because it shares characteristics with both bears and raccoons. However, molecular studies suggest the giant panda is a true bear. Because of the synchronous flowering, death, and regeneration of all bamboo within a species, the giant panda must have at least two different species available in its range to avoid starvation. The population boom in China after 1949 created stress on the pandas' habitat, and the subsequent famines led to the increased hunting of wildlife, including pandas. The giant panda has the digestive system of a carnivore, as well as carnivore-specific genes, and thus derives little energy and little protein from consumption of bamboo. Therefore, they need to eat constantly. Unfortunately, pandas are in danger extinction because they are being killed daily by humans and their habitats have been stolen from them. We have to learn to take care of animals and their habitats, because everything that grown in the planet has a purpose to keep the planet green and beautiful.
