Hanson.

In May of 1997, they released their first album Middle of Nowhere. I was ten years old and thought I had just found the love of my life (the youngest of the band, Zac). Of course, I was into the music, too, though – who wasn’t? MMMBop was everywhere. Years passed; some where I forgot they existed (1999, 2001) and some years where the band consumed a good majority of my life. Soon a decade and some passed, four full length albums and a bunch of EPs were released since Middle of Nowhere, and I’m still here through good times and the bad. The music definitely lives.

so hold onto the ones that really care, in the end they’ll be the only ones there.

Overview. - ACDC cover

I’m pretty proud to say that this was my first show, and

Dancin’ in the Wind

I feel pretty lucky when I think back to it. In the summer

A Minute Without You

of 2004, by some miracle, I convinced my parents to

Thinking of You

drive me (10 hours) to Minneapolis, MN. To them, it was

Get up & Go

a summer holiday. To me, it was my first crack at

Look at You

seeing a band I’d loved for all too long.

Hand in Hand

The week before the show, I was away at camp. I left

Underneath

camp a day early and got home around midnight the

Dying to be Alive

day before leaving. I checked my email to find I had

won a meet & greet for the show. This was before front

AM – to line up of course. After long hours of sitting on the sidewalk in torrential August heat, it was meet & greet time. It was my first time seeing Hanson at all,

and there they were – right in front of me, shaking my hand. It was pretty special. Finally it was show time. We started in about fifth row, but then left. The venue was ridiculously hot and packed and we couldn’t deal. We ended up somewhere in the middle of the crowd with not the best of views. By the end of the show I was completely drenched with a combination of sweat and water, but it was probably one of the best first shows I could have asked for. Definitely the first concert where I truly enjoyed the whole thing from start to finish with not a care in the world. First of many, that is...

I met a lot of fans this weekend. It’s always nice to put a face to a... hanson.net fan club screen name. I sat at my place in front of the stage essentially all day (second row center) waiting for the show. It was then that I realized how hot Okalahoma was. Damn. The show itself was one to remember from a near-perfect spot in the crowd (well worth the long wait!), and afterwards, we all watched the documentary and understood Hanson a tiny bit more. This whole weekend was a ton of fun complete with a lot of laughing and lot of new friends – although tiring. It gave me a sense of freedom all the while seeing a new city and experiencing a huge amount of passion for one amazing band.

I began college in September 2005. Needless to say,

just released in some countries (soon to be released

Great Divide

in North America), so I guess I was just itching to see them as soon as possible. I didn’t consider not going an option, really – I had to go. What are student loans for anyway? After a long wait in the Denver airport and a stand-by flight hours later than expected... I barely landed in Tulsa (it was a rough flight on a small plane) while listening to an ironic lyric from This Time Around... “...And we won’t go down.” Not so cool. The performance exceeded my expectations by miles. Let’s just say I sat there for the whole hour smiling my face off. It helps that I have a CD and DVD to remember this show by, but I wouldn’t even need that. It’s a memory I will never forget – it truly captured everything I love about this band and why I began loving them in the first place. I also met and stayed with two of my closest ‘hanson’ friends to date – Sarah and Brooklyn – and we had tons of fun in and around Tulsa... gaining some of the best memories ever. MOE house, a choreographed jump, Starbucks, Tulsa man, Big Red, the ice bucket... just to name a few. All was perfect. My first two shows were great, but the third time was the real charm.

Great Divide

After such an amazing experience at Middle of Nowhere

Where’s the Love

Acoustic earlier this year, I met up with three other

of shows (five consecutive shows). It was a tough

We flew out the morning of November 1, 2007 and

MMMBop When You’re Gone Get a Hold on Me Blue Sky

We gathered all of our luggage (let’s just say... “urban camping”), picked up Gloria, and were on our way to the Disneyland area. We put on our flip flops, walked

barefoot to Denny’s (a pre-walk), and then relaxed in the hot tub after a long day’s travel. The show in Anaheim was the best way to start off an

amazing week. We spent the morning in Disneyland laughing like children as we were thrown around on the Indiana Jones ride, Big Thunder Mountain roller coaster, and the mountain that is Matterhorn... And let’s not forget when we straight-up walked out of The Tiki Room for obvious reasons. We wore Mickey and Goofy hats all day like bosses – Taylor Hanson liked this. We went on our first barefoot walk (in the hats) to support the fight against AIDS before the show, and then spent a solid two hours rocking out in 4th row center. I’m a front row snob normally, but when the show is as great as this one was, 4th row was mighty fine. After the show, and running on adrenaline like you wouldn’t believe, we drove straight to San Diego in our sweatpants and instantly set up camp. One perfect show down, bring on show #2. Bring it on California. Bring on the music, the laughs, the memories. Bring. It. On.

though because I found myself in the front row – for the first time. I finally truly understood why people would sleep on the sidewalk for this. It really was something else and I knew I’d be back in the front soon enough. The show was at The Fillmore – the same venue that they played for the Live at the Fillmore DVD in 2000. I watched that a few too many times. It looked pretty familiar, and the floor really did bounce. It was yet another amazing concert with tons of energy. A lot of dancing occured, and some spinning occured during Something Going ‘Round. Naturally. After the show, we changed into our sweatpants in a parking garage and began the drive in the middle of the night back to LA. We didn’t quite make it.

When I said we didn’t quite make it, I was refering to

the fact that we had to pull over at a truck stop to sleep

Insert Blue Sky lyric here. This was after we saw

Strong Enough to Break Go

We arrived in LA bright and early, checked into our hotel and showered up. Kim and I went out to go

Got a Hold on Me

was a balcony night for Heather, Kim, and I, and a meet

Blue Sky

If Only

in line... none at all.

Hey Georgia

We raced up the stairs and landed a spot in the front of

a side balcony and enjoyed the show from a bird’s eye

view. Not too bad, but not my scene. After I fell sleep

during one song, I told myself I’d never do the balcony

After the show, I went out to IHop with a few other friends from CA, devoured a plate of breakfast food at 12:00 AM, and then passed out safely in my hotel with the crew. Next stop. Las Vegas.

the venue... Kim, Martha, and I in the front row, with Heather standing behind us. Yes, definitely going to be a good show. Despite a silly curfew and a ridiculously high stage, this show was relatively stress-free (minus the statue girl beside me and minus the wasted dollars on an early admission ticket that wasn’t even effective) and sounded amazing. It was a good ending. After the show, we met Taylor and Isaac by the bus, got some photos, and then we all enjoyed some Fat Burger with Kelsey and Rachel. And then listened and sung along to Where’s the Love on the juke box. Didn’t draw attention to ourselves at all... But, as I said, a really good ending. We said our goodbyes to The Walk Tour 2007 with worn-out voices and sad hearts. I was forced back into school quickly, and immediately began wondering when I could do a trip like this all over again. It would have to be soon.

We thankfully were given numbers to keep our place in line, so we went to a Vera Bradley store and then to California Pizza Kitchen for lunch. A lot of dollars later, we came back in time to meet some fans and go on a cold and windy walk. Brooklyn had won a radio meet & greet, so she grabbed a front row spot. I came in behind her in line and jumped a row and ended up right next to her. Hello, front row. Sarah was a few people down in the front as well. Good enough! This show was all kinds of fun. We danced, we made up silly actions to songs, we screamed, we were frightened by Isaac’s Hey face, and the list goes on. And then they played Change in My Life. Dead. Stashed those over the barricade and hoped they’d be there in two hours. Eventually I took off one of two other shirts, as well. It was looking like one of those days where no matter what you do, you’re always going to be uncomfortable. I began to accept this fact/didn’t care as soon as the show began... We rocked out quite efficiently for the whole show, especially during Runaway Run. I practically died. Not surprisingly, it was yet another kick ass show by Hanson. So sweaty and disgusting. Absolutely no personal space, people’s hair in my face. But the energy, the music, the passion. ...So that’s it. I’m in love with this lifestyle.

Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers.

They’ve been around forever – much longer than I’ve known them. I heard a few songs from the Self–titled album on MySpace in 2005-2006 and that’s about it. After buying Glassjaw Boxer in 2007 I thought, “I’ve really gotta see this band soon.” About six months later, I bought a couple more albums when I heard they were to be the opening band at a few Hanson shows I was going to be at. After these shows in early 2008, I knew that I had just found something really special. Two years have passed, a lot of dedication has been given towards the band, and a ridiculous amount of consecutive listening hours have occured. The lyrics are inspirational and have secretly taught me a lot. The music; it’s relaxing, fun, quiet, and loud all in one – their music is the only music that I can and love to listen to any time, any day, and anywhere. That’s some pretty powerful music right there.

this is my life. it isn’t much, but at least it’s mine.

Milwaukee was my first show. My excitement was kept pretty low-key, though, or maybe it was just drowned out by my excitement to see Hanson again... Typical. Maybe it was a good thing. Just excited enough to enjoy it, but not too excited that I had a bunch of unreasonable expectations. (I’d like to say now, though, The Sixers could probably live up to any expectations I could ever have.) To be honest, I don’t remember this show much. I do remember really enjoying Big Easy and Piano Man, though. I remember how awesome I thought it was that they had the entire crowd engaged for both songs. It’s always impressive when an opening band is able to get the crowd going that much – choreographed the crowd during Big Easy and a crowd sing-along for Piano Man. After one opening set, I could tell that this was a trending style for any Sixers show. Their records are great, but their live shows are something else. I was already looking forward to seeing them again... Here comes an addiction to yet another band. Here it comes.

Photos unavailable. Unfortunately The Rave doesn’t allow cameras at their shows... Instead, lets mentally picture Kyle Riabko doing the Big Easy dance and it’ll all be good. Maybe a mental picture of a crowd of anxious Hanson fans singing Piano Man too, just for good measure.

playing Vegas, Sarah and I started dancing with the sole purpose to give us some personal space. We had to let people know how it was going to be. And it worked... Thanks, Sixers. I knew most of these songs from albums I already had, especially Anthem... and 4th of July. Start the Day Early, well, that just made me wish I wasn’t stuck in this crowd but rather had a drink in my hand. I liked these guys... A Kyle Riabko solo was nice. Kyle was acting as a temporary guitarist for the band this tour, which was a fantastic surprise. Kyle’s practically my neighbor; we come from the same areas. You could say I’m supportive of my fellow Saskatoonians. To finish it off, the four of them did a pretty bad ass cover of Up on Cripple Creek. To this day, it’s still my favorite version of the song and I find myself watching it on Youtube from time to time. Yeah, okay, hooked. After the whole show we met Kyle in the lobby and soon was being attacked and recognized as a girl from Saskatoon. I meant to meet the real Sixers here, too, but... well, it just didn’t happen. There’s always the next day.

On the walk, I heard a rumor that The Sixers may be playing Saskatoon in a month. I made a mental note to ask about this. This was a nice, spacious seated show. Sarah, Brooklyn, and I acted completely ridiculous even for this set, especially during Glassjaw Boxer. 4th of July was already one of my favorites – lyrically, musically, and everything else about it. Brooklyn Dreams. I was completely unaware what this was at the time and I thought it was just some new material from Kyle... but no. This was my very first Trevor Jackson song I ever heard live and it was magical. The album was to come out later that summer and I was yet to (but soon would) discover the greatness of... Trevor Jackson. To finish up the set, Pedal Steel, and (I’ve had the) Time of My Life were played. Pedal Steel was one of my first favorites, so I liked this. The Dirty Dancing soundtrack song... well, we all know that song. And the lift. Of course they did the lift. Never a let down. I was really starting to like this band from somewhere in the Northeast. Another band that lives far away, which is never good, but so what. We went out to meet them before Hanson took the stage and it was then confirmed that they would be coming to Saskatoon in a month. Not all hope was lost! Because of The Sixers being part of this tour, it was one of my favorite group of shows to attend ever. It was like favorite band overload. I’ll take it.

again... only this time they were opening for George Thorogood and The Destroyers. I don’t know The Destroyers save for the song Bad to the Bone, but we went to support The Sixers anyway. I had a slight suspicion they’d need the support. Well let’s just say we had the entire barricade up front to ourselves during their set. What a drastic change from those Hanson shows last month... Remember when we had to dance to Vegas to give ourselves some space? Yeah – Saskatoon brought a polar opposite experience. They did pick pretty impressive songs to play for this show. Stephen ran around the exhibition arena during 4th of July (it took awhile...) which triggered a few more to come up to the front (thanks, mom). A few less awkward stares between us and band members occured now and it was appreciated. Speaking of awkward, we crafted our Big Easy skills over the past month and brought those to the show. We knew every move. Days and Piano Man were crowd favorites for obvious reasons, but to me, the whole set was fun. We even got another Trevor Jackson masterpiece. In fact, it was this night that I was finally informed who the hell Trevor Jackson was. He’s nothing short of amazing, that’s for sure. The night finished off with long conversations, group pictures, and a Trevor Jackson dropcard. Successful.

After our very first Rock Boat shows earlier this night... we found ourselves in the front row of the Lido Deck stage. It was cold and windy, but there was still no place I would have rather been. I hardly remember this show, and I think it was a combination of those Carnival special drinks and being overly excited for what the week was going to bring. I know we had the time of our lives this night, though, so that’s all that matters. It really was going to be a good week of amazing music with some of our favorite artists. What a great start. Let’s not forget to mention hanging out with Boots Factor in the casino later this night with all 3 of us in matching American Apparel hoodies while all drinking whiskey out of one glass. What the hell? We eventually went to bed, and then jumped out four hours later when we arrived at the beach... Goodbye, normal amount of sleep.

How about Now I’m Not So Lost? Or perhaps the ever-famous underpants dance by Goose during Thirteen had us laughing. We left the show so happy that we decided to go to bed earlier than the previous two nights, or maybe we just had to go to bed earlier... Talk about rocking yourself to sleep.

And it was. We were in the front (surprise, surprise). The show was full of energy and the lido deck was packed this afternoon. It was simply a good day for a show on a boat. Remember what I said about Hanson’s Middle of Nowhere Acoustic performance? “Third time was the charm”? Well that’s how I feel about this show vs. the first two shows on The Rock Boat. Those were good, but this was the charm. The setlist was crafted perfectly for the last day of the boat and it felt like everyone in the crowd was in the exact same... boat. Ironic? You know what I mean, though. It was one of those shows where everything felt completely right, from song one to the encore. I will never forget when I looked around the Lido deck near the end of the show and saw one huge group of incredible music fans. Music brings so many different people together – I love it. Basically, I felt like this show concluded what The Rock Boat is all about... and at that moment I knew I wouldn’t be able to say no to coming back again (especially if The Sixers returned). It was, to say the least, the sweetest goodbye.

barely north of North Dakota, so it didn’t feel that far for

me even though Fargo is an 11 hour drive from

Natalie and I made some brief arrangements at a cheap Motel 6 in Fargo and purchased two concert tickets. After much anticipation, on November 14 we left and arrived in Fargo later the following day. Applebee’s. After all, it was North Dakota and not really

all that reasonable at all in terms of retaining our sanity.

Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Cover Curtain Call

The crowd was small, which was nothing unexpected. We had a couple drinks and did some rehearsed choreography to Shady Esperanto & the Young Hearts during the show. As always, it felt like the setlist was carefully chosen to suit the crowd perfectly. Don’t even get me started on the unplugged rendition of Milwaukee played in the middle of the crowd [so standing right next to us]. Sometimes the little shows have their advantages. The rest of the show was awesome and we left the show by running down a back alley (after we helped load out) with some very special setlists and a box of Sam’s leftover pizza. And for the record, that pizza was delicious, despite the chilled temperature of it. So although we drove 11 hours for one show, and 11 hours all the way home right after, especially to a city like Fargo, North Dakota... it was well worth it. We did what we had to do to see a show – kind of what “loving music” is all about.

Sixers do a Tom Petty set on my birthday... well, things like this just don’t happen all that often. To make a long story short, we were in the midst of living the high life on another Rock Boat, spent the day eating pizza, drinking frozen cocktails, and watching a lot of artists. And then there we were, standing on another ship deck about to see The Sixers. Nothing can really describe this show other than the word fun. It wasn’t your typical Sixers show, but perhaps the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers dress code made things a little more interesting in its own way. Maybe take a look at Goose or Sam’s hair – just sayin’. Free Fallin’ was definitely enjoyed by all, and not just because we really were all “free falling together” on a cruise south of Florida. It was one of the few shows we saw on the Lido deck thanks to mother nature, and it’s unfortunate that it was a cover set... but who’s complaining? Tom Petty rocks.

Then it was pretty unsettling and probably felt worse than it was. Around this point I regretted wearing a dress because who knew when you were going to just... fall over. Super classy. So mother nature aside... the show was great, of course. More choreographed Shady Esperanto... dancing occured in unison with half the front row, Oh Adeline, MIlwaukee, and a handful of all my other favorites were played. Ah, who am I kidding these days? They’re all my favorites. By the time the show was over, it was tough to stand up as the tropical storm was getting increasingly worse and frankly, I was scared... We had to leave the Paris Lounge immediately. We found ourselves sitting on the floor of a lower deck soon after in leggings and Trevor Jackson shirts surrounded by the smell of barf. A few additions from the previous night made it a damn good show to conclude The Sixers on The Rock Boat X... maybe Days, My Sweet Charade, or You Win, to name a few. After the show, the party really was just getting started. The show concluded The Sixers on this boat, but there was a whole night ahead following this show. You could say this show put us all in the best of moods and we continued the final night with a more drinks and a lot of hairspray. I can always count on The Sixers to make us all ridiculously happy.
