LIFE ROLLS Continued from Page 14 it opened new doors for me,” Taliaferro said, adding that it helped him get over his fear of water. His favorite moment of the experience was when he fell off the board and the volunteers told him to start paddling quickly. Before he knew it, the water pulled him back down, leaving him with a huge rush of adrenaline. Taliaferro went into detail about how he ended up in his situation. Three years ago in Central Jersey, he was shot in the neck, and from the neck down he was paralyzed. The doctors told him he would never be able to move again, but he didn't pay attention to what they said. Two and a half weeks later, he got feeling back in his upper body. Now, he has feeling in his legs and is working on building up muscle in his legs so that he can hopefully walk again with the help of therapy. He left off with this piece of advice: “You can do whatever you put your mind

THURSDAY, JULY 13, 2017 to as long as you don't listen to anybody's negativity,” much like the doctor who said he wouldn’t move. The event was made possible with the help of several volunteers including surfers, residents, visitors and local surf schools like Locals, Skudin and New York Surf School. Participants’ helpers were also on hand. One volunteer, Buffy, who was Marte and Taliaferro’s physical therapist, says she became a part of the event to “help her clients get involved and try something new.” She herself found the event to be enjoyable. “All the volunteers were engaged and everything was well organized. It was the most beautiful day and the water temperature was cool,” Buffy said. While the 82-degree day made for a great day in itself, what Buffy loved most was seeing her patients having a good time, catching the waves with a big smile on their face.
