DCA KICKS OFF TAX SEASON WITH EXPANSION OF NYC FREE TAX PREP It’s that time again…tax season. Last Thursday, January 25, Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Lorelei Salas kicked off the tax season with the launch and expansion of the agency’s 16th annual tax season campaign, encouraging New Yorkers who earned $66,000 or less to file for free using NYC Free Tax Prep. On February 10, DCA, in collaboration with the Department of Education’s network of community schools, will host the NYC Free Tax Prep-a-Thon, a 12-hour tax filing marathon and resource fair at schools in all five boroughs. Tax preparers will be on site from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. helping New Yorkers file their taxes for free. Also offered will be free financial counseling with a financial counselor from the NYC Financial Empowerment Centers. Counselors can help tackle debt issues, save for the future, open a bank account, improve credit, and much more. Free screening for local, state, and federal health
and human service benefits will also be available to help individuals find out if they are eligible. This family friendly event will offer fun activities for kids and a resource fair for individuals to learn more about the many city resources available. More information can be found at nyc.gov/ taxprep. There are two free tax prep locations in Far Rockaway at Urban Upbound, an organization serving public housing residents and other low-income residents. One location is at 1907 Mott Avenue, open until April 16. The second location is at 1931 Mott Avenue, Suite 410, open until April 17. Note that all filers’ yearly income must be under $66K.
