COMMUNITY Exclusive interview: Hon. Inez Dickens speaks out loud and clear on Covid 19 impact on Black communities; business relief, youth and food programs; primary and general elections

By Maria Grazia CAVENAGHI

Harlem knows the impactful life-long engagement of fered to public service by the Hon. Inez Dickens, As sembly member for the 70 th District of NYS Assembly. I met her to get the pulse of the current situation. Here is what she told me.

We know now that the African American com munity in the US has been the hardest hit by the pan demic, both health-wise and economically. How did this impact Harlem ites and our micro & small

businesses? "You are absolutely right, COVID-19 impacted black and brown commu nities much more severely than any other communi ties. Our businesses were already in the midst of an epidemic and with the hit of this pandemic, many will struggle to reopen and some may not reopen.

Our death toll was high er, as reduced immune systems definitely affected the severity of this pandemic. We must not just look at the effects of what happened in the last four months but also begin to evaluate the under lying reasons why our immune systems are weaker, causing us to suffer harder and longer.

First, the significantly harsher socio-economic and sanitary conditions that are upon us. The fact that black people have a higher rate of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, strokes, can cer and asthma is additionally compromised by our cultural cooking and eating habits. Before we can effec tively combat the ravages inflicted by coronavirus on our communities, we must understand why and the root causes of our less resistant immune systems. Only then we could reduce the impact and prevent such severe suf fering in case of a new wave of the pandemic."

Can you tell us what programs are available in communities of color to

assist small businesses? "In East Harlem, Coun cil Member Diana Ayala has set up the proceeds from the Pathmark project to assist small and micro small busi nesses there.

Unfortunately, there was little originally set up for Harlem and West Harlem; and there is no need to fur ther discuss what happened with the first stimulus mon ey that the federal gov’t set up, as it went to the big boys.

But the second feder al dollars, as fought for by Congresswoman Nydia Vasquez and the Congres sional Black Caucus, was to target the smaller busi nesses, which it did. Good example of such assistance was Carver working with UMEZ to target small busi ness. Unfortunatly this still didn’t reach the micro-small businesses, the mom and pop stores of which our community is still very rich.

Thankfully, the 10O Black Men, under the guidance of their dynam ic President Michael Garner, stepped in and secured funding from Hennessy specifically for micro-small businesses.

West Harlem Group As sistance was able to secure funding for micro business es mostly in Community Board 9 West Harlem.

Columbia University asked for my assistance in setting up a low interest loan program geared towards Harlem-West Harlem mi cro-small businesses which has also been successful.

SBS, as you are aware, had also set up funding for small businesses but they quickly ran out of money and only a portion got into the hands of the businesses that most needed it.

It has been easier to se cure grants and low interest loans from CDFIs and smaller banks although in this last round many banks opened their policies to a few of our micros. Even American Express lent a few low interest loans to small MBE business.

Tell me about the dis tribution of food and ppe you have been involved in,

all along this pandemic.

I’ve been blessed through several contribut ing entities to distribute groceries, hot food, masks and sanitizer. I’ve delivered to Grant, Manhattanville, both NYCHAs thanks to World Foods via Derek Perkinson, Field Director With NAN. Thanks to the 70th Assem bly District State Committeewoman Yasmín Hurston, my staff and I were able to deliver bags of fresh grocer ies to our senior building on West 140th Street between ACP, Jr. Blvd and Malcolm X Blvd. Because of the dili gence of Larry Scott Blackmon at Fresh Direct, we were able to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to NY CHA Lincoln Houses.

Thanks to District Lead er Keith Lilly and his contacts, I was enabled to deliver fresh groceries to 3333 Broadway and NYCHA Drew Hamilton as well as over 300 cooked meals to Drew. NYCHA A. Philip Randolph because of the ef forts working with me of Bklyn Borough President Eric Adams, the Bklyn based Muslim mosque came and cooked halal meals to order for hours and thanks to West Harlem Group Assistance I was able to deliver bags of groceries. I was also able to provide bags of groceries to the HCCI seniors on 5th Ave at 118 Street, because of Donald Notice CEO of WHGA, I was able to en dure a MOU for NYCHAs Frederick Samuels to go to their pantry once a week solely to get fresh fruits and groceries. At the very onset I took groceries to Syden ham Senior Building, donor asks to remain anonymous. With each building I includ ed sanitizers and masks. 70th Assembly District State Committeeman Lon nie Davis and I, delivered sanitizers to Canaan Baptist Church, Memorial Baptist Church, Antioch Baptist Church, Metropolitan Bap tist Church.

Thanks to Governor Cuomo and my Speaker Carl Heastie I have boxes of sanitizer for my beloved Harlem and thanks to May or DeBlasio for providing me with masks for Harlem.

Harlem has some very interesting youth pro grams – what is their impact?

"Iesha Sekou’s Street Corner Resources , Voza Rivers and Jamal Joseph Im pact Kids, Vy Higgenson’s MaMa Foundation, PAL on 119 Street, Harlem Youth Marines, Northside Center, Boys and Girls Club of Har lem on 145 Street, and many others have all stepped up with providing safe ha vens, educational tutorials, safe entertainment sources, youth mental health services and much more during this horrific time. I was able to sponsor a blood donor drive at City College, through the NYS Assembly" .

Why do you think that while many assembly/ congressional seats were lost in June 23 primary, Harlem managed to retain its incumbents?

"Queens lost 3 assembly incumbents, Bronx lost 1 assembly incumbent and 1 congressional incumbent, but Bklyn held on as did Harlem, albeit Manhattan has a difficult Assembly run for an incumbent: if lost the seat will become a republi can seat. There seems to be an anti- incumbent senti ment throughout the country, which is unfortunate at times, because with senior ity come additional funding and aids in helping the com munity you represent. Harlem understood this".

Former VP Jo Biden will accept the Presi dential nomination by a nearly all virtual National Democratic Convention in Milwaukee in August. What do you think about this?

"Because of COVID-19, the 2020 Democratic Con vention will be very different and unusual. In lieu of personal attendance, the na tional party is attempting to structure remote voting. I’m unsure how that will work for 50 states. "

Will Democrats suc ceed in defeating Trump?

I believe the Democrats will take back the Presiden cy and maybe pick up a few US Senate seats as well. This administration has fu eled hatred and RACISM and made it okay to resur rect its ugly head. Racism never went away, it was just underground but today the call is anti-immigration, an ti-Black and Brown people, anti-small business which built this country, and more. There were always blows to black people: we were shot either “legally” or illegally, hung as if we were ‘strange fruits’ hanging from both southern and northern trees. Economically this coun try of all hues has suffered loss of employment and high cost of housing and al though I believe Joe Biden will win, I think many more people will vote to go against what Trump has come to stand for."

What do you think would happen if Trump won? What when Biden wins?

If Trump won - OMG he would take it as a mandate for him to continue with his tirades and hate mongering.

When Biden wins, he will have gotten people to believe and trust that he cer tainly cannot do any worse than what we’ve had for the last four years.

BUSINESS HARLEM COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS The Brownstone Welcomes Old and "New" Customers

A Message from Harlem Business Owner Princess Jenkins of The Brownstone

“Thank you for Believing in Me & Supporting The Brownstone” I am overwhelmed by the unexpected blessings and the generosity that we have received. We were ordered to close more than three months ago. We were fortunate to receive some COVID stimulus funds, small grant and a loan. However, it does not make up for our loses, but has put us in a position where we can continue to serve you. Some other small business owners are still waiting and have received no assistance. I have been an outspoken advocate along with other business owners and local leaders demanding to know where is the money for small businesses in Harlem. We are the employers in our community, we provide training for young people and support our churches and community organizations. In the midst of everything I wake up grateful knowing my family is safe (Jais, Polo, siblings and parents). Their well being gives me the strength to stand up and fight another day for funding for our small businesses. The good news is it's working - several local banks have committed to assisting us in getting the money.

Each day it fills my heart and I can't thank you enough for your support and kindness. You may have; called or text, shopped on-line, brought a gift card, sent a gift by Zelle, mailed $1000 in a unmarked envelope, or dropped off homemade ice cream with bread pudding. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Thank you for thinking of us.

We are now open and practicing the stated social distancing. Be sure to wear your mask. We look forward to seeing you Monday-Saturday, 12noon to 6:30pm
