About the Bronx Council on the Arts Founded by visionary community leaders in 1962, The Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) is a pioneer in advancing cultural equity in The Bronx. From our early beginnings as a presenter of affordable arts programming in select Bronx neighborhoods, we have grown into a cultural hub that serves the entire creative ecosystem of the borough. Our programs serve artists, the public, and the field at large by building connections, providing resources,

and advocating for equitable practices. Then as now, we focus on supporting the work of underrepresented groups – especially artists of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Through this lens we offer affordable programs for seniors and youth, and provide direct services to over 1,000 artists and 250 community-based arts groups each year. n these challenging times, the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) announces its recent distribution of over $500,000 to local artists and arts organizations through its annual grantmaking programs. As COVID-19 continues to have a devastating impact, especially in The Bronx, and resistance to systemic racism in our society continues, we hope that these funds make a difference for individual artists, arts collectives and arts organizations, and advance the vibrant arts and culture in the borough. Arts and culture are at the heart of New York City, and Bronx-based art and artists have been a driver of the City’s culture for centuries. Supported by funding from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), BCA supports community-centered arts and culture projects, and recognizes outstanding local artists representing the rich diversity of communities throughout The Bronx. This year, BCA’s Community Engagement Grants (CEGs) awarded 71 grants for projects that contribute to the cultural life of the borough. CEGs focus on the work of community based organizations and their high-quality arts activities within all disciplines, genres, and styles. BCA’s Bronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO) Awards, which serve to recognize the wealth of Bronx artistic talent, bestowed coveted notoriety to 44 local artists
