to our 30th Anniversary Sponsor!
Congratulations Stephanie on being chosen as one of OC Metro’s 20 Women To Watch!
From the CEO To our donors, volunteers, wish families and friends, Wow, what a great start to a new year! In the first four months, we’ve had the honor of granting 89 wishes to local children from all over Orange County and the Inland Empire, as well as assisting 169 children from out of town who traveled to our chapter to have their wishes granted. We are on track to grant 335 wishes in this fiscal year (which ends in August) – the largest number ever granted in one year in the history of our chapter!
Also something new this April was hosting two, back-to-back, spectacular Walk For Wishes® events in Riverside and Irvine. We welcomed more than 40 wish alumni families, who joined 1,700 walkers for a day of fun, friends and festivities. We were thrilled to have such enthusiastic participation from our local community, corporate teams and sponsors; they pave the way for us to be able to grant more wishes!
We kicked off 2013 with a new program called “Women’s Circle of Wishes.” Fueled by a founding council made up of 24 incredible local women, our goal is to fund 20 wishes in the coming year. We would love to see more amazing, philanthropic women get involved and give of their time and talents through fundraising and volunteerism. Please see page 11 for more details about the group. Help our “circle” grow by joining us and make an impact on countless lives!
We love the momentum we are seeing with increased support from the community, our tireless volunteers and our very generous donors. Each of you helps us put smiles on the faces of our wish children, one wish at a time – one smile at a time, providing a lifetime of memories. Best wishes and many thanks,
Stephanie McCormick President & CEO
On the cover
8-year-old Sarah becomes a cupcake chef for a day Sarah is a precocious little girl from Riverside who loves everything pink. She loves to draw, paint and work on puzzles, but more than anything, she loves to bake. After being diagnosed with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia, Sarah was introduced to Make-A-Wish and given the chance to have her one, true wish granted.
For this future culinary artist, the wish came easy. Sarah said, “I want to be a chef and cook for my two brothers and my parents!” Sarah’s wish granters set out to create a magical experience for her. On her wish day, Sarah was picked up in a beautiful limousine and taken to Casey’s Cupcakes, where she was greeted by a huge crowd of Make-A-Wish volunteers, cheering and holding signs for her. Casey Reinhardt, owner of the bakery and winner of the popular television program, Cupcake Wars, was also on-hand to work one-on-one with Sarah and help her become a real chef. Sarah was given her very own pink apron and taken into the shop where she cracked eggs, mixed the batter and filled the cupcake tins. While the chocolate cupcakes (her favorite) were baking, she went back outside where all her fans, a.k.a. MakeA-Wish volunteers, were waiting. She helped judge a cupcake contest and signed
autographs. When asked, she said if she could invent a cupcake it would be called “Island Retreat” – a tropical fruit-flavored cupcake with fruit-flavored icing! When her cupcakes were finished baking, Sarah went back in to decorate them. She emerged a short while later with a big smile stretched across her face and delivered her cupcakes to the crowd – and of course to her brothers, mom and dad. This was truly a dream come true for Sarah. Her parents will cherish the smiles they witnessed that day and will no doubt be the recipients of more of her baking. “I’m sure this will be something she will remember for the rest of her life,” said Sarah’s mother, Marina. Sarah’s wish provided strength to face tomorrow, hope for a healthy future and joyful memories to last a lifetime … with some delicious baked treats along the way, courtesy of their little chef.
We were thrilled to host more than 1,700 participants at this year’s Walk For Wishes events in Riverside and Irvine this April. Walkers enjoyed more than just a little exercise – with games, entertainment, raffles and treats throughout the day! Thanks to all of the incredible support from local companies, volunteers, participants and donors, we raised more than $225,000 to grant wishes! We are already looking forward to next year’s event – watch our website for the 2014 date!

On February 16 and 17, we were proud once again to be the beneficiary of the 6th Annual Share The Love Charity Event hosted by Paul and Arlynn Feldman of Indian Wells. The event, presented by Caddyshack, encompassed a host of exclusive activities around the Coachella Valley. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive golf tournament held at Mr. Larry Ellison’s private estate and golf
course – Porcupine Creek, a tennis tournament at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, and an evening event held at the historic La Quinta Resort and Club. The evening event included a sit-down dinner, unrivaled live and silent auctions, entertainment and dancing. This year’s event generated more than $360,000 to directly fund wishes in the Coachella Valley and its surrounding area.

Volunteer Spotlight Meet a member of our team Barb Jensen is no stranger to the Make-A-Wish office, coming in often to visit the staff and help out wherever needed. You can also find Barb at most Make-A-Wish community events throughout the year, volunteering her time and services at fundraisers and special events for wish children. We asked Barb to share a little about her volunteering experiences: What keeps you coming back to volunteer each year? The positive office staff and environment, friendships I have made throughout the years, the smiles on children’s faces, and the behindthe-scenes preparations have all made a positive impact on my life. Who wouldn’t come back for more? Sharing, having fun and tearing up at events make Make-A-Wish a big part of my life. What have you learned or how have you been personally affected from your experience with Make-A-Wish? Being around positive, exciting, and energetic people has influenced my life for the better. I feel more energetic and passionate about life and helping those in need. Make-A-Wish and its offerings to me make my day. Seeing an appreciative smile or glisten of joy in a child’s eye says it all.
NAME: Barbara B. Jensen CITY: Seal Beach
What has been the most rewarding, touching or memorable experience for you? The most memorable experiences are the 4th of July and Christmas cruises because I am able to communicate with not only the wish children but also their parents. Being a listening ear not only gives the families an outlet to vent, but also gives me the first-hand knowledge of how extremely special all these children and families are. For reasons beyond what I can imagine, these families are truly more appreciative and positive. They know what appreciation is all about. Do you have any advice for individuals considering volunteering with Make-A-Wish? Open your hearts and minds and put joy in a child’s heart and smiles on their faces.
Join Barb and become a volunteer Currently, we have a special need for wish granters in Riverside & San Bernardino counties, Spanish-speaking volunteers and community outreach volunteers. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more!

Merchant Services adopts 50th wish since 2007 We are so pleased to congratulate Merchant Services (Irvine) on their 50th wish adoption! Since 2007, Merchant Services has offered an opportunity for their sales team to donate a portion of their commission from each new client that they secure. The company then offers a four-fold match, and in doing so links up their corporate employees with the external sales team to support some incredible kids! Once the collection reaches $5,000, we celebrate by adding a wish to their Adopt-A-Wish wall! This April, they adopted Jason’s wish to go to Hong Kong and were treated with a visit from Jason and his family who shared their story. This wish represents a total of $250,000 in donations since the program’s inception!
Thoughts from a donor: This is our fifth year supporting the incredible work that Make-A-Wish does in the community, and our team takes great pride in being a part of the wishes of some truly courageous kids. Nathan Jurczyk, vice president of Merchant Services
Adopt-A-Wish® supporters Individuals, companies and community groups that donate $5,000 or more have the opportunity to adopt the wish of a local child.
The employees at Boston Scientific included us at their annual national sales meeting and 5k run. Through this event, they raised more than $34,000!
Through Hyundai Capital America’s workplace giving campaign, employees from Irvine, Georgia and Texas raised enough funds for each office to adopt a child’s wish! The Irvine office adopted Luke’s wish to go to Walt Disney World Resort.
Dr. David and Nina Fleming adopted Jerry’s wish to go to New York.
Quantum adopted Joshua’s wish to go on a Disney Cruise.
