Preface Make a Move Time is ticking... Start thinking about your career! Dear Student, These times are hard times. Companies are not queuing for students; students are queuing for companies. The Make a Move Career Week offers you the perfect opportunity to get in touch with companies. If you are still indecisive about which companies might be interesting for you, or in which industry you want to spend your working life, a company presentation might be of great value for you. If you are already one step further, ready to interact with recruiters of various companies, an interactive workshop or individual consult will be suitable for you. Are you also looking for a more informal atmosphere to speak with recruiters? The Career Week offers you Company Lunches and Dinners, where you can meet recruiters while enjoying a delicious meal. After the Career Week Make a Move gives you the perfect opportunity to take the next step: we offer a one day Application & Assessment training on the 23th of November. 1. Make a Move For more than 40 years, Make a Move has functioned as the bridge between university students and their future employers. Through our career events, workshops and networking opportunities, our main aim is to help you develop your skills and potential to enter the job market well-prepared. The events that we offer can be divided into three general stages: (1) self analysis, (2) orientation, and (3) selection.

1. Self Analysis The make a move track starts with you: What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What are your goals and aspirations? The answers to these questions form an important basis upon which you can orientate your future career directions and the process of finding the job that fits you best. Self analysis starts with clearly structuring your wishes and needs, thereby creating an overview of you personal job criteria: the most important factors that you look for in a future employer. Make a Move provides you with several aids in this process, such as the ‘Profiel Company Book’, our website, and ‘the Future is Yours’. The latter is a yearly organized event for first- and second-year students that will help you clarify your competences and job market orientation. 2. Orientation Having clarified your strengths and weaknesses, your personal job criteria, your main competences and your job market orientation, you are well-equipped to start searching for your future employer. Make a Move will aid you in your search, through the Make a Move Career Week, the Profiel Company Book and the company profiles on www.makeamove.nl. With these tools we will help you find a match between you and your future employer.

Career Week 2010

Career week 2010

3. Selection In the last phase of the Make a Move track you should have a good overview of the companies that suit you best; the companies that you would like to apply for. Applying however, is not something you do on a daily basis. Nevertheless, it is certainly something that can be learned. That is where Make a Move comes in. From articles in the Profiel Company Book, information and practice assessments in our website, to application- and assessment trainings, we will help you acquire the skills to make your application successful.

2. The Make a Move Career Week The Career Week is organized yearly in nine cities in the Netherlands. Through presentations, workshops, cases, individual consults, lunches, dinners and informal drinks, over 3500 students nationwide orientate themselves and get to know a wide array of wide companies. The Make a Move Career Week creates the bridge between companies and students in a simple and direct way; Make a Move will make sure that you get to know the companies of your choice. The Career Week offers multiple options, ranging from opportunities to obtain general company information to ways of personally coming into contact with professionals and applying for that one internship or job. Whatever your goals, Make a Move will try to help you achieve them by offering: - Company presentations - Company-specific activities (e.g., workshops) - Individual consults - Company lunches and dinners In addition, the end of each day of the Career Week is marked by a networking drink, during which you can talk to recruiters in an informal atmosphere.

Career Week 2010

Career week 2010

1. Company presentations During an interactive presentation, companies will inform you about the opportunities and prospects they offer, their company culture, the working atmosphere as well as the application procedure and the competencies the companies are looking for. Moreover, you will be given the opportunity to ask questions; an opportunity that you rarely get. To help you ask the smartest questions, you can prepare yourself by using the information in the Profiel Company Book or the Make a Move website. 2. Company-specific activities This section of the Make a Move Career Week is especially valuable for students who have already decided upon the kind of company they would like to be a part of. During the company-specific activity, you will be put in a situation similar to those the employees of the company itself face on a daily basis. However, some companies take a very different approach and organize a High Tea or a golf tournament. Whatever the company-specific activity may be, it is a very good opportunity to truly get to know a company. 3. Individual consults Because of their one-on-one setting, individual consults are the most efficient way to get into contact directly with recruiters. Throughout each 30- to 40-minute consult, you will not only make first contact with the company of your choice but you are also given the opportunity to gain experience in having an application interview. The aim of the individual consult is largely up to you: you may mainly use them to mainly get into contact with recruiters, but you can also use them to apply for a business course, internship or maybe even a job. Whatever your goals may be, it is paramount that you prepare yourself sufficiently and have a clear view of what you want to get out of the individual consult.

4. Company lunches and dinners These activities offer you the perfect combination of an informal setting and personal contact with recruiters. While enjoying a lunch or dinner, you have ample opportunity to ask all your questions and get to know recruiters personally. 5. Networking Drinks At the end of each day of the Make a Move Career Week, a networking drink will take place in the lobby of the Crowne Plaza hotel; a good opportunity to expand your network and meet recruiters.

4. Preparation You are about to meet several popular multinational companies. Remember: you will never get a second chance to make a first impression. Make sure this is a good one! 1. Research Company: Make sure you have done sufficient research about the company! • Check company website • “Profiel bedrijven boek” (for Dutch speaking students) Location: check the website for all details and leave plenty of time for registration. Be on time! 2. How to dress Dresscode: Business Formal. The first impression counts- dress modest and smart! Men: • Shirt: wear a white or light blue shirt if possible. The shirt should have long sleeves, no breast pocket and fit tight around the body • Accessories: just a shirt and suit won’t do, accessories are just as important! Choose leather shoes with a matching leather belt. A tie should be worn at all times, but preferably not a red color (too distracting). Women: It doesn’t matter whether you wear pants or a skirt, but remember that “less is more”! Thus choose your accessories wisely, like a tasteful bag and a good watch. Concerning the use of colors; avoid (light) pink or other pastel shades if you want to look professional. No go’s: • clothes showing too much cleavage • heavy perfume • big earrings • a thick layer of make-up, etc. Career Week 2010

7. Interview Unilever For the third year in a row in the Make a Move Monitor labour market research, the Dutch students have voted for Unilever to be the most popular employer.

Profile Willemijn de Nooij (24) Unilever Benelux Bachelor European Studies, Master Strategic Marketing

What exactly is your function within Unilever? I’m following Unilever’s Management Traineeship programme in the field of Marketing. Within Marketing I’m part of the Brand Building team of the U-brand, that is, the Unilever brand itself. This is quite different from what other Marketing Trainees do as I’m not specifically focusing on one brand. I have to translate this ‘U-brand’ to the consumer which is an extensive process and involves a lot of strategy, even global strategy. What is the joy of this function? What I love about my function is that, since I am working on the U-brand overall, I quickly get to know a lot of people and a lot about Unilever’s brands. Among other tasks, it is my responsibility to know which sustainable projects each Unilever brand is working on for the next coming five years and to find out what the status is. Often consumers are quite sceptic towards sustainability programmes of large companies. However, once you notice how much time and energy is devoted to these programmes within Unilever, you soon realize that it’s not for profit but truly a major part of our business culture. We work on similar projects worldwide to turn small consumer actions into big world differences. It’s great to be part of this and be able to inspire other people to carry out similar actions. Next to that, my Traineeship Programme offers me a lot of opportunities in the field of personal development. We have a continuous flow of trainings which we have to attend, either in the Netherlands or abroad. Which other starter-functions does Unilever offer? We have regular functions as well as traineeships in the following fields: HR, Finance, Supply Chain, Business to Business, R&D, Marketing, and Customer Development.

How did you get involved with Unilever? I did an internship at Dove(Unilever brand) in Brussels for three months in the summer of 2009. After that I became Unilever’s Campus Manager Assistant for Maastricht in the academic year of 2009-2010. This is a recruitment function. I attended several career events to find ‘high potential students’ for Unilever and organized in-house days. What are your personal goals, concerning your career at Unilever? I hope to be able to learn as much as I can from other people and to inspire others. I would love to manage a team and deliver creative ideas on a sustainable level. What does Unilever look for in its employees? Ambitious, energetic, honest, and pro-active people. You have to be pro-active enough to find out what you have to do. Nobody will simply give you the exact task that you have to carry out. You have to find these tasks yourself and be outgoing enough to step to other people to meet them and gain information. You participated during the Career Week in 2007/8. Which role did this play during your orientation on the labour market? Make a Move was very helpful for me. In fact, it was there and then that I talked to a Unilever recruiter who made me enthusiastic about working for this company. Since then, I never changed my mind. Therefore it played a major role! Which activity of the Career Week was most useful for you? The company presentations. What advice would you give to students orientating on the labour market? The earlier you orientate, the better you know which company you want to work for, which in turn might motivate you to do an internship there. This seriously helps, not only to find out whether the company indeed suits you, but also for a potential job. In case you are interested in doing a Management Traineeship program, make sure you have leadership experience!
