About ME

Design Philosophy

I am currently a year 3 Product and Industrial Design student from Temasek Polytechnic, and I will graduated with a diploma; plus a business fundamentals certificate, in April 2015. This is my portfolio that showcases some of my works over the past few years, it represents my design style and my range of skill sets. I like to explore different fields in the design world and constantly learn new things that builds up my experience. I love to have fun too, but I am also a very serious person at work. Do feel free to contact me regarding any work opportunities.

I believe that a successful industrial design should be not only functional and sophisticated, but playful and visually appealing. It is essential to give careful attention to all aspects of a product, including preliminary research, market studies, and models, in addition to building and maintaining solid client relationships.

Design is never easy; just like there is no easy path to success. It takes a lot to survive in the design industry and shine. Design is not just about designing, it is about adapting to changing situations, about being able to be creative and original, about accepting criticism to improve for the better and it will never be easy. Design is also about being yourself, you need a personal branding for yourself, with your own design style and design language, along with being creative and original, that is what really makes you stand out from the thousands of designers out there. I brand myself to be uniquely, simple yet complicated. Never judge a book by its cover. Things may look simple on the outside, but when you dive deeply into design, you will see a whole new world.

This project pushes our ability to borrow the design language of a particular company, in my case its Black and Decker, and to incorporate it into a product that is out of their product ďŹ eld, which I have chosen to work on a coee maker. This practice us on many aspects of design elements and on how to prepare a product for industrial manufacturing.

This project practice us to design a full scale product for a human being, in my case, I did a human-powered vehicle that draws inspiration from the 1967 Milliken MX-1 ‘Camber Car’ and the monowheel bike. The design also stands out from the crowd by challenging symmetry just like the Blohm and Voss BV 141 aircraft. The aim is to potentially create a new riding experience for professional cyclist that also sparks excitement among people.

Created with Alias Automotive, this is the second assignment done after learning the software. This project requires deep understanding of the software for its detailing and modelling. This project is also represented in a poster form, with the help of Adobe Photoshop, to illustrate the dierent speciďŹ cations and uses of the camera.

Created with both Adobe Illustrator, to create vector paths; and Adobe Photoshop, to create the digital rendering. This is the ďŹ rst assignment done after learning Photoshop, that required quite a huge amount of technical skills. This project shows 6 views of the phone as a rendered engineering drawing at a 1:1 scale.

This assignment allows us to explore the science and technological world and learn how to design products with new innovations and interesting features that looks into the future. Part of the assignment also pushes us on our ability to create a graphically appealing infographic. In this assignment we have to do a lot of research and study about our target user too.

As part of my education, I did basic 2D art drawing, using dierent mediums such as pencil, pen, markers, and ink. I also did basic copic marker rendering, and basic painting with acrylic paint to learn about colours. This basic skills is required as part of my education before we move on further to study more about design.

As a practice to create a corporate identity, I came up with a self-branding name called “YX Design Studios. A corporate identity brings out a very important image to a business organization. This project involve both branding and graphic design. Several identities were made in this project, such as the name card, envelope, CD and CD cover, pencils, letter head, invoice, and title block. Both a rendering and several hardcopies is shown here.

A yearly tradition for Sozosha College of Design in Osaka, Japan, is to invite students from various countries to participate in an International Workshop, where we were given an opportunity to work together and design a modern Japanese teahouse. Having to communicate cross culturally sparked fresh and creative ideas, which was the aim of the workshop. In the 20th International Student Workshop, we first worked with students from Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, America and Japan, who are specialized in different fields of design such as Product, Graphic, Illustration, Interior, and also Fine Arts; to create 3 concept spaces. Every detail of the space was taken into consideration, from both interior and exterior, to furnishing and graphic advertising, allowing everyone to learn form one another while sharing their views and opinions. As for us, product designers, we then focused on designing and mass producing cardboard stools for the teahouse. Finally, based on scaled prototypes, a lifesize teahouse and two other structures were built at the Goryou Shrine near the school; consisting of materials such as cardboard, bamboo, and paper. The following day is when we officially open our teahouse to over 200 visitors, where we also served them some Japanese Green Tea and Wagashi, a Japanese sweet.
