STUDENT PROJECT _ DIPLOMA PROJECT

SMALL GESTURES Master Year 2 24 weeks Tingshuset, Katrineholm, SWE Assignment: Redesign of Courthouse to Archive Project Focus: the importance of details Whether its a technical detail, a choice of material or a lighting fixture, these gestures all influence how we experience a room. How do these small gestures influence the people inhabiting the space? The project has explored details in three categories: Division of space, Materiality & Elements, though case studies of renowned buildings from architects such as Alvar Aalto, Josef Frank and Sigurd Lewerentz, and though the proposal of a redesign of a Courthouse into a Municipal Archive. It tested small gestures in relationship the room as a whole, to each other and to its surroundings. To read the full project please see the Diploma Booklet What makes a Small Gesture? Summary of case study: Alvar Aalto, Josef Frank & Sigurd Lewerentz Details that make a difference

Human scale A grid within a grid - Large surfaces are split up into smaller human scale Precision and usage of domestic scale, both within private and public rooms Volume, space and details in relation to user, function and emotion

divisions of space

Seamless divisions - Subtle changes of color and material Divisions made by ceiling height, railings or fenestration - not only with walls Divisions made by light - artificial and natural materials

Depth, durability and texture in Material and facade Materials with natural colors - limited use of additional color elements

Domestic Artefacts - In a public environment Elements with a haptic and user centered ability Repetition rather made by a larger sum of elements then by the smallest component Elements as part of a larger context and idenetity, within or outside of its own scale

VKM RISK Codesign Sweden AB spring 2011 Exhibition design World Culture Museum, Gothenburg http://www.ueforum.se/forum/11-4for1utstallningskritik.php

The exhibition had two merging concepts. Firstly the theme of the exhibition itself namely “Risk Zones. Secondly the theme of re-use, all of the main materials used were taken from the museums old existing exhibitions. For example,The the lighter wood floor was an old floor cut out from underneath the existing black.

STUDENT PROJECT _ PUBLIC

OPERA: STADSGÅRDSKAJEN Bachelor Year 1 18 weeks Stadsgårdskajen, Stockholm SWE Assignment: Design an Opera Project Focus: Material-Room-Detail This project aims to create a transparency in the meeting between the visitor and the Opera. The ironcurtian is unraveled and it invites you to see more. The building consists of two bodies; ‘infront’ and ‘behind’ of the stage, where the flow of the visitor continuously crosses the flow of the workers. At the crossroads you as visitor gets a sneakpeak to the workshops, rehearsal rooms and backstage. The meetings are constantly handled with translucent materials and small sneakpeaks instead of complete transparency to preserve the excitement of the show and the integrity of the artists. The program of this project was 32’000 sqm. restaurang övningsrum

RELIZED PROJECT_RE-USE DESIGN

JUST UN-DO IT Conceptual Devices summer 2009 Re-use Design Concept

www.conceptualdevices.com/2010/03/just-undo-it/

A hoodie is not just a hoodie. In a world full of stuff, smart items should be transformable, editable. They should engage the possibility to be transformed into something else. We do not need a new object. We rather need to get rid of some of them, to reduce the complex network of things around us. Just undo it is a collection of reversible objects that could be made from a hoodie at no cost

COMPETITION _ JDS

CHEILJEDANG R&D CENTER

JDS Architects summer 2010 Science Center, South Korea

http://jdsa.eu/tag/maja-westman/

One of two competitions I worked on during my internship at JDS. The building it made out of 3 ‘slabs’ that twist with its lower slab opening up to the public, and merges this very private business with the public. The building contains labs, cell structure of offices, and ancillary spaces
