FAMILY TENSIONS MICHAEL SALA Set in Newcastle with vivid descriptions, Michael Sala’s books, The Last Thread and The Restorer, tackle family tensions and the psychological and physical damage that can result. Based on his own life, Sala’s moving first novel The Last Thread won the NSW Premier’s Award for New Writing in 2013 and was the regional winner of the Commonwealth Book Prize in the same year. The Restorer, described as powerful, poetic and extraordinary, was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2017. Michael Sala currently teaches creative writing at the University of Newcastle.
