D ELIVERY TO BOATS , BUSINESSES , AND RESIDENCES www.visitsouthwestharbor.com Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory - 1 • C ALL FOR LOCATIONS BBQ E XCHANGES AT AREA BUSINESSES

Publisher’s Welcome Welcome to Southwest Harbor and Tremont — the “quiet side”! You have chosen to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country — Mount Desert Island. This PORT DIRECTORY is intended to enhance the time you spend in this area by providing easy access to information about places to stay, things to do and see, activities, and places to dine, among other things. In the back of the book, you will find an extensive index of merchants. Also useful are the marina rules, rates and telephone numbers, tide charts, ferry schedules, museum listings, church services, maps of Southwest Harbor (including Bass Harbor and Tremont), and a full map of Mount Desert Island in the center section. It is our hope that the Port Directory will serve as a helpful reference book for the visitors and residents alike. We want this publication to be useful, fresh, fun, and appealing. Keep it aboard your boat, in your home, by your phone, or in your car. For additional copies, please ask at a place of business, Chamber of Commerce office, or just contact us. As we are a member of the Maine Tourism Association, our books can also be found at most visitor centers throughout the state. Our sincere wish is that you enjoy your time on Mount Desert Island, and thank you for reading the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory. Our area (and world) looks quite different from a couple of years ago. While MDI, and businesses, are opening up more and more, we don’t know quite what the summer will hold. Please continue to be patient, and to follow the CDC guidelines that are in place. When making decisions about whether or not to include a Calendar of Events this year, we knew that there were too many changes happening to be able to accurately portray what would be happening even just a few weeks, much less months, in the future. Please check with the local chambers of commerce (websites listed on page 18) while you are here. And ENJOY your time in this beautiful corner of the world.

The Port Directory Featured Bike Ride Includes ferry trips from Southwest Harbor to Great Cranberry Island, Great Cranberry Island to Little Cranberry Island, and Little Cranberry Island back to Southwest Harbor. Also includes biking and walking excursions on Great and Little Cranberry Islands. Beginning and ending at the Southwest Harbor upper town dock on the Clark Point Road. GPS: N 44 27.778’ / W 68 31.798’ Biking & Walking Distance: Approx. 10 miles, Ferry Time: Approx. 2 hours, Total Trip Time: 7 hours

This activity was originally featured in the 2016 Southwest Harbor Port Directory. We decided that this would go well with our Local Hands Reaching Out article featuring Islesford Boatworks. There are two significant differences between this activity and what we normally offer. They are cost and schedule, and both are caused by the need for ferry service for this trip. You can choose to leave from the Southwest Harbor Upper Town Dock (which was our choice) or Cranberry/Islesford Dock in Manset taking the Cranberry Cove Ferry; or you can leave from Northeast Harbor using the Mailboat. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes ahead of ferry departure. This will give you time to unload your bikes from their rack and bring them and your other gear down the long ramp, to the end of the dock. If it is low tide, the ramp is rather steep. As for gear, we recommend sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, water, snacks, picnic lunch, a little cash, and a camera, all in a comfortable small daypack. Binoculars would also come in handy. You can forgo the picnic lunch as there are opportunities to buy food on both islands. As you board the ferry, find a place to sit, inside or out, depending on the temperature. We went in late September and were blessed with a lovely, warm, fall day. We could have sat outside on the back deck, but it was just after 7:00 AM, so we ended up inside, except to take pictures. Be sure to hold on to your ferry ticket as you will need to board the ferry two more times.

www.visitsouthwestharbor.com

As we sailed toward Great Cranberry Island, we stopped at the Manset dock at 7:15. This spot offers an unparalleled view up Somes Sound, as well as the boats in the harbor and Greening Island, at the mouth of the sound. Heading across Western Way (the western corridor of water to open ocean from this area), we approached Great Cranberry Island. The views of Mount Desert Island from the open water are outstanding. We arrived at the Great Cranberry Island dock at 7:35. After unloading our bikes, we headed up the docks and ramps to the terra firma of Great Cranberry Island. The area around the town dock is a lively place. There were many vehicles, whose owners had driven down to take the ferry to either Islesford or MDI. While we were getting on our bikes, one of the locals said, “Oh, you must be here for the million dollar view!” We told her we didn’t know what she was talking about, to which she replied that we “would know it when we saw it”. Pedaling up Great Cranberry Road which climbs a small incline before turning left and leveling out, you soon enter the cultural center of this island. At 1/2 mile from the town dock, you come upon the Cranberry House Museum and Hitty’s Café on the right. Just a little further is the Great Cranberry Congregational Church and the Great Cranberry Library and Longfellow School on the right and a gift shop and art gallery on the left. The Longfellow School is the island’s elementary and middle school. Great Cranberry Road continues for another 1.5 miles and passes over lovely island countryside. Further on to the left, the “million dollar view” appears. Beyond a lovely, evergreen-bordered meadow, the mountains of eastern Mount Desert Island are perfectly framed. From left to right are Parkman, Cedar Swamp, Sargent, Penobscot, The Bubbles, Pemetic and Cadillac Mountains. The Bubbles, North and South are particularly striking, nestled between the higher peaks on the Cont’d. p. 8 east and west. As is often the case, a picture doesn’t do it justice!

Southwest Harbor & Tremont Port Directory - 7

Great Cranberry Road continues with open vistas to the Northeast of The Pool on the left. This enclosed area of ocean water is almost a pond with the northward curl of Great Cranberry and a couple islands almost encircling the water. This area between Great Cranberry and Little Cranberry Islands appears to be a prime area for sea kayaking. The tight channel of water between the two islands is called The Gut. We will leave it up to you to research this term. The road ends at a private residence. This is another excellent view of the pool, but please respect the property owner and do not linger. Certainly do not cross the gates in this location. The remainder of the landmass, winding around to the left, is apparently not accessible to the public. At this point, you should turn around. Heading back, at about 1/4 mile, the Cranberry Shores Trail leaves on the left. This nice half-mile walk, maintained by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, leads to a beautiful, rocky shore. On our outing, the surf was pretty lively and the strong morning sun illuminated the crashing waves. Heading back to Great Cranberry Road, you will continue back in the direction of the town dock. In another mile, you will take a right on The Lane. This half mile long road descends to the shore with a nice view of The Pool. Heading back up to the main road, take a right and proceed to The Cranberry House Museum and Hitty’s Café. This is a good opportunity to check out the museum and café and perhaps take in a longer walk down the Trail to Whistler’s Cove. This is about a one-mile trail over many of the before mentioned log walkways and leads to a lovely seashore. The stones on this beach are a little smaller than those of the Cranberry Shores Trail. When we came with the family during the summer, this is where we came for a picnic lunch. The grandkids liked walking through the woods, balancing on the log walkways; and, as mentioned before, they loved the rocky beach! We consider this or the other walk on the Cranberry Shores Trail to be optional. You must consider the ferry schedule and be ready to leave for Little Cranberry before noon. This gives you 2-4 hours on this island, depending on how early you arrived. Because it is shorter, and because we really liked the wild surf, we recommend The Cranberry Shores Trail and only do the Whistler’s Cove Trail if you are making good time. But they both have unique qualities, and it depends on your preference and timing! We also recommend that you arrive back at the dock 10 minutes before your ferry is scheduled to depart. The ferry trip to Little Cranberry Island is about a 20-minute trip. We won’t repeat the loading and unloading details but it should get easier as the day goes by. As you arrive in Islesford, (the town on Little Cranberry Island), you will notice that this island is different from Great Cranberry. There is a surprising presence of lobster traps and gear in many places. When we arrived in Islesford, we wrote down, “this is a purely, authentic, fishing island.” We recommend that you travel up the hill to the Islesford Historical Museum managed by Acadia National Park. The National Park Staff on location are a good source of information about the island. In this area, there are also public restrooms, the Islesford Dock restaurant, and other shops. Head up Main Street and just after the Islesford Congregational Church, turn left on Mosswood Road. On the left is the Islesford Neighborhood House and Library. Check out the Library, if it is open. The librarian on duty is also a good source of local information. For $1.00, you can get a good map of the island (highly recommended). Returning back down to Main Street, turn left and pass the General Store, Post Office, and The Ashley Bryan School, the local elementary and middle school. Shortly after, on the left, is the Catholic Church and a cemetery. Just after this, bear left on the North Wood Road. After sharp left and right turns, you will look for a “right of way” on the left, just after a log cabin. This little road descends quickly down to the shore. You will know you are in the right place if there is a residence on your left where the road ends. Park your bike off to the side and walk down to the shore. This is Bunker’s Cove. With a view much like “the million dollar view” on Great Cranberry Island, this is a great place for a picnic. There are residences close by so keep your noise at a reasonable level. As you go back to your bike and climb back up to the North Wood Road, take a right and go back to Main Street. Take a left on Main Street, and then another left on Bar Road. Pedaling past homes with much fishing gear around them, you will descend to the shore. Take a left on the

gravel Coast Guard Road, (no street sign), and proceed parallel to the wall of rocks the sea has piled up 8 to 10 feet high. This wall obscures your view of the water so you might want to pull over and “climb” the wall to get your bearings. The panoramic view is outstanding. To the right, the rocky shore curls around to the left to include Maypole Point and further in the distance, one side of the landmass that forms The Pool on Great Cranberry. To the left, the shore curls around to the right and includes the old Coast Guard station, which is now a private residence. Further on, Baker Island connected to Little Cranberry Island by a bar, finishes almost a visual half-circle as you look out to the open ocean. You can continue along the road, but remember to stop short of the old Coast Guard station, to give the owners their privacy. Returning from this area, you will turn back on the Coast Guard Road. Turning right on the Bar Road, you will cross Main Street and keep to the left on the Bar Road until it meets with Main Street near the Mossword Road. Shortly after joining Main Street, you will again come upon the Islesford Congregational Church. We found the Church unlocked and went inside. This is a lovely, old church with fine wood and beam work. Also of note are the stained glass windows which were created and donated by local artist, author, storyteller and musician, Ashley Bryan. Practically across Main Street from the church, Maypole Road leaves to the left. The Maypole Road is about a 1 mile round trip to Maypole Point which is worth the ride. now. You want to be sure to have enough time to catch your ferry back to Southwest Harbor! We knew we had enough time to go down this road without missing our trip back. The times have changed since we took our trip, so DO pay attention! The Maypole Road first goes by the town field and picnic area on the right. The road is out in the open most of the time with high, bushy vegetation on the sides in stretches. You will go by many boathouses (including the current home of Islesford Boatworks) on the right, then a cemetery for some of the early settlers on the left. The road winds a bit and then climbs a bit to a point where the view to the right of Great Cranberry and “The Gut” are very nice. In a couple more turns, you will come upon a a private residence. We parked our bikes a ways back from the house and followed an open area to the left of the house. This leads to the shore and another great view. To the left, the long shoreline of Gilley Beach, the Coast Guard Road where you were earlier, the bar and Baker Island form a long, sweeping view of a remote bay. Straight ahead, you will see a few small islands. One of these is called Seal Rocks and here is where the binoculars would come in handy. We did not have any, but it seemed that there were more than a dozen seals out there. Heading back to the town pier, you will board the ferry and head back to Southwest Harbor with a stop at Great Cranberry Island. We hope you enjoy your bike trip to the Cranberry Isles. If you would like to share your trip with us, or make suggestions, please write to Bayside Graphics, PO Box 55, Mount Desert, ME 04660 Celebrating over or email us at: 50 Years baysidegraphics@roadrunner.com.

Cranberry Islands

The following advertisers may be found on the Cranberry Isles: • Beal & Bunker Mailboat & Ferry • Cranberry Cove Boating Co. • Working Lobster Boat Tours Dorothy Simpson put it most eloquently: The name “Cranberry Isles” is poetry with a Yankee accent. We think of the cranberry as a purely New England fruit, a paradox, like all New Englanders, with its bite and its warm rich bloom of ripeness. So the Cranberry Isles are New World cousins to all the isles of history and mythology: the Spice Islands, the Fortunate Islands, the isles of Greece, and Vachel Lindsay’s “wizard islands of august surprise. The town lies at the entrance to Somes Sound, the fjord that splits Mount Desert Island, just south of Northeast Harbor. www.visitsouthwestharbor.com

This is a recipe I made up on a whim a few weeks ffe L s g e ago, with ingredients I had on hand. They are grainfree, gluten-free and low carb. We loved them!

Sauté and onions until softened, add e garlic eppers chopped spinach and cook until tender.

4 large red bell peppers Local organic big bunch of spinach (preferably from a local farmer’s market), chopped 2 tsp. oregano 1 tsp. salt 1/2 medium onion, chopped (about 1 cup) 3 cloves garlic chopped 14 - 16 oz. jar organic pizza sauce 1-1/2 - 2 cups ricotta cheese 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Shallow baking dish or pie pan line bottom with parchment paper(optional)

Layer ingredients in each of the peppers: start with tomato sauce, then ricotta (about 2 Tbsp.) sprinkle oregano & salt, and add some spinach mixture. Repeat layering 2 -3 times (depending on the size of the peppers), add half of the shredded mozzarella once in middle and then top with sauce and then remaining mozzarella and sprinkle with oregano.

Preheat oven 375˚ Cut tops off peppers and remove the seeds.

Christine Wade, Cornerstone Gallery

Bake 30-45 minutes (convection oven speeds up the cooking). Broil on medium for an additional 5 minutes until the peppers are cooked and top is bubbly golden brown.

Local Hands Reaching Out This is the fifteenth year that the Port Directories have put a spotlight on a local organization that “reaches out” - be it reaching around the world or around the corner. This year the focus is on a community-based boatbuilding program for children ages 7 to 97 situated on Little Cranberry Island, Maine. All photos in this article are used by permission of Islesford Boatworks. A special thanks to Peyton Eggleston, Tony Archino and Judith Timyan for putting this article together! The mission of Islesford Boatworks is to build opportunity, community, and a sustainable future for Maine’s working waterfront. Located on Little Cranberry Island, part of the Town of Cranberry Isles, we work with children, youth and adults to teach traditional wooden boatbuilding skills, an appreciation of forest and maritime ecology, and responsibility for maintaining the integrity and health of maritime livelihoods. All the boats we build go to serve the local community or the working waterfront. Since its founding in 2006, Islesford Boatworks has steadily grown from a youth summer program, serving approximately 30 children, to a community organization that reaches all generations of the Cranberry Islands. We now offer a variety of ways to get involved in boatbuilding, from “wee works,” which introduces the safe use of basic tools with kids under age seven, to our summer programs for youths, young adults, and adults, to our year-round school programs, and our older volunteers who work behind the scenes or mentor our youth. As a community organization, we strive to hear and respond to the needs of our island. In 2018, Islesford Boatworks moved into its new home on the shore, The Blue Duck. Through the wonderful support of the U.S. National Park Service, we’ve entered into a long-term lease of the building to bring our programs and services literally to Maine’s working waterfront. The Blue Duck (named after the blue duck decoy mounted on the door frame) was built around 1852 as a chandlery (marine hardware store) for the Hadlock family, who owned a thriving business

that included fish wharves, smoke houses, farms, a sawmill, a store, and a small fleet of schooners. After a stint as a local history museum, a small apartment, storage facility, and public restrooms, by the 2010s, the old store had seen better times. Doors and windows were boarded up and debris and junk had accumulated in the attic and rooms. Through the generous support and encouragement of the community, Islesford Boatworks was able to renovate the Blue Duck and breathe new life into the old island store. Moving into the Blue Duck has allowed Islesford Boatworks to grow into a more established, community organization. We have reestablished a chandlery, honoring the original function of the site, while also running programs for youth and adults.

This summer, all of our programs will work together to launch two boats to add to our working waterfront. The first is a 15-foot coastal dory for a local lobsterman to use to set fish traps, catching bait to support island lobstering. The second boat will be a “Victor White” skiff, a project to continue the legacy of a Great Cranberry boatbuilder by copying an original boat that was nearly rotted away and would soon have been lost forever. Working under the guidance and sponsorship of Ed Gray of Newman and Gray Boatyard, and relying on his years of boatbuilding expertise, we are particularly excited about the ways that building the Victor White skiff preserves an island craft while connecting our youth to the islands’ history and heritage. We’ve engaged over 1500 individual students and volunteers in our 15 years of building boats. That number is both humbling and encouraging. It makes us so thankful for what we’ve accomplished but leaves us eager to do more, to reach a wider audience, and to continue our mission of building opportunity, community, and a future for Maine’s working waterfront. If you’d like to learn more or support our organization, please check out our website at: islesfordboatworks.org – or stop by the Blue Duck!

Please note: We are unable to use the entire Tidepool section here, but this is a PORTION of the wealth of information found in this book. Check out the local libraries to see the entire book.

(bar-na-kuls) That’s us! We are one of the first things you will step on while looking for a tidepool. Our shells are grayish-white with sharp edges, and we cement ourselves permanently to rocks. Please, walk gently or we’ll be crushed. If you want to meet us in person, look in a tidepool where we’ll be under water. If we’re not “out” when you arrive, swish the water around us with your hand for a few seconds, then wait. We’ll be out to eat the plankton (microscopic food) that you have stirred up!

Did you like the barnacles? Well we LOVE barnacles. In fact, we eat them! We are the dog whelks, the carnivorous (meat-eating) snails of the tidepools. Our drill-like tongue, called a radula (rad-you-la), lets us bore through shells of the animals we like to eat! Our shells come in many colors and patterns. What colors can you find?

Imagine a steaming boiler, the fresh scent of lobster caught straight from the salty sea, the satisfying crunch as you crack into this delicacy, and the sweet, succulent taste of a dish that Maine does best. Stop by today to see just what Maine is all about. Take it from us – when you’re this close, you can really taste the freshness. During the summer season, our restaurant is open 7 days a week. You can also enjoy our Beal’s at Home service anytime! We ship our fresh from the dock lobster nationwide, year-round, or we can pack some up to travel with you.
