The Mayenne River and its valley

T

he Mayenne has its source at the foot of the Mont des Avaloirs in the commune of La Lacelle (Orne). A meagre trickle of water to begin with it runs past the Normandy Maine Regional Nature Park, gathering force from the innumerable streamlets that run through the heathland. In this part of north Mayenne, known as Haut-Maine et Pail the river is not navigable and there is no towpath but there is some excellent walking. Between Ambrières and The Haie-Traversaine the lake of the Haute-Mayenne proposes numerous nautical activities and leisure activities.

River Tourist Map

P

assing right through the département the Mayenne was for a long time the region’s most important economic artery. The first known text that talks about navigating the river dates from the time of Charlemagne. But we may suppose that this method of transport began well before then in the Gallo-Roman period. And we know that it continued right up until the middle of the last century with the barges that went to and fro, plying their trade in timber, oil or Loire sand. It is around this emblematic valley that the département forged its soul and constructed its first buildings. To begin with the sacred foundation of temples, churches and monasteries; after that fortified châteaux used the river as a line of defence and then finally towns and villages came to cluster around this river of life. After the short period of disaffection which followed the cessation of commercial activity on the river, the Mayenne has today found a new life thanks to the river tourism for which it is eminently well equipped but also because of the recent re-opening of its towpath. From what was historically a first natural road where horses pulled their waterborne loads, the Mayenne has today become a leisure facility for all nonmotorised pleasure-seekers.

Lac de Haute-Mayenne

F

urther downstream, starting at Mayenne, all the circuitous pathways converge on the river’s towpath, considered one of the most beautiful green lanes in all France.

The towpath: a walker’s paradise

N

O

E

This is where the towpath begins. In the heart of the town of Mayenne the MacRacken bridge marks the zero point and the beginning of an 85km. long journey, 85km. uninterrupted kilometres that allow you to travel right across the département as far as Daon and the edge of Anjou.

This 85km. long ribbon also constitutes an excellent reference point from which to experience and taste the richness and authenticity of the area: its protected wildlife areas rich in flora and fauna... its pretty, floral lock-keepers cottages... the gourmet welcome of its restaurants... the cosy charm of its houses... the numerous leisure activities available on or close by the water.

Restored by the Conseil général, open to all forms of non-motorised * pleasure traffic and equipped with information boards that make this ‘road’ a truly open book, it is unique of its type, as much for its length as for the quality of its restoration. Access to it is regularly indicated on the N162 to the north of Laval and on the N162 and the D112 in the south.

S

The towpath is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Obviously we ask everyone to have regard for other users.

fishing in la Mayenne

T

he Mayenne is the kingdom of the coarse fish and big catches: pike, zander, carp etc. A local peculiarity: you can even fish at night thanks to night swims made available especially for carp anglers. For the rest it’s up to you. In the north, above the public reaches, the banks remain in private hands and fishing is subject to prior permission. On the towpath, on the other hand, you can fish where you please with the proviso that you have a rod licence etc.

Access is usually easy and from the paths that lead to the locks. Motorised traffic is prohibited on the towpath but you will not have to go far to uncover a nice spot. In addition, the Mayenne federation has developed bankside areas “especially for anglers”.

Available where fishing permits are issued, clubs, tourist offices etc. For further information: Fédération de la Mayenne pour la pêche et la protection du milieu aquatique - 78, rue Émile-Brault - 53000 Laval Tél. 02 43 69 12 13 – Fax 02 43 69 57 50 - www.fedepeche53.com

● RULES FOR USE OF THE TOWPATH The Mayenne valley is a protected natural area... and will remain so for as long as people look after it. Put another way, there are certain common sense rules to observe. Firstly the environment itself. Apart from respect for people and the properties that border the river, we ask you to leave places in the same state that you find them - clean and unspoilt – an obvious priority.

The same goes for the towpath where the observation of a few simple rules makes life more pleasant for everyone: horse riders and cyclists to keep to a sensible speed, have respect for other towpath users, especially when passing, etc... And finally, don’t forget that a little ‘bonjour’ is always welcome.
