Beautification with Shade Tree Commission This past year has been busy for the Shade Tree Commission committee, with a lot of planning and discussion for a streetscape, 2014 is ready and lined up with plans for new trees along Chillicothe Street. Urban Forester, Ann Bonner, has been very helpful with educating the committee on proper tree care, from the planting of the tree down to the maintenance and repair. Chairman, Lisa Gibson, of the Shade Tree Commission said in 2014 the Portsmouth Shade Tree Commission will learn the results of the city’s application for recertification as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. She said they also plan to continue with the beautification of the main downtown thoroughfares, Chillicothe and Second Streets, with the replacement of missing or dying trees. It is their hope to also begin formulating an application to the State of Ohio for assistance with beautification projects for the state route gateways into the community. Arbor Day celebrations are also in the works as well for 2014. She said they are always looking for interested citizens and businesses to join their efforts. The Portsmouth Shade Tree Commission meets the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00 p.m. at Port City Café & Pub 424 Chillicothe Street. Interested persons may call 740-352-9870 to confirm meeting time and location.
