Tuesday, August 31, 2010 The Portuguese informed me that their home city, Guimar達es, the first capitol of Portugal, was founded in 868 and is considered the birthplace of the Portuguese nationality. They were disappointed in St. Louis as they were expecting Tom Sawyer but said the Kansas leg of Route 66 was beautiful and has been their favorite part of the trip. Upon leaving, they promised to email the Soda Fountain when they got back home and to share their experiences with all of our students. The Canadians shared the fact that college is much cheaper in Canada. A small four -year college would cost approximately $10.000 a year. That includes dorm, meals, books, and tuition. When you brake, use both brakes together. Generally speaking, when conditions are good, the front brake accounts for as much as 2/3 of the bike's stopping power. How much brake pressure to use depends on your abilities, your bike's capabilities, and the environment.

Riding with a passenger makes balance and control of your bike a great challenge. Make sure your passenger is wearing all of the proper riding gear, knows where and how to sit, where to put their feet and hands and how to lean through turns. Tell them to look over your shoulder in the direction of the turn. Remember that the passenger is "your" responsibility and should be properly educated, prepared and ready to ride.

Slow down before going into a curve. Look through the curve and gently accelerate as you enter and drive through the curve. This gentle acceleration creates stability but cannot be accomplished without proper braking prior to entering the curve.

“Continued from front page”

I am proud of my country but realize the sometimes an outsider can see faults that we don’t see. I want to learn from tourists who have a different perspective than I have therefore I ask questions such as, “What are the main differences you see in our two countries?’ Or “What do you like or dislike about the United States?” Invariably I get the same answers. They indicate that people in our country are friendlier than they are in theirs, that we are more patriotic, we fly more flags, and our food servings are bigger. They find no fault with our country. Although they are proud of their homeland, they are impressed with everything they see in the United States. As a whole, they enjoy the small towns but are not really impressed with the big cities. They enjoy the stories about Bonnie and Clyde but never heard of Mickey Mantle. Coke is their favorite soft drink and they are not used to so many fried foods. Spiritual Food For Thought Rescued Read: Ephesians 2:1-10 God, who is rich in mercy, . . . made us alive together with Christ. —Ephesians 2:4-5 Lauren nervously yet excitedly hopped into a one-person kayak for a white-water rafting experience. After strapping herself in, she headed down the river with a group of kayakers and guides. Lauren became even more nervous when she laid eyes on the falls ahead. Suddenly, as the kayak tossed and turned in the white water, it flipped over. She had been instructed on how to get out quickly if this were to happen. But she became disoriented as she hung upside-down in the water and couldn’t find the release bar to get out. She knew she couldn’t hold her breath much longer and thought she would soon be in the Lord’s presence. Then help came just in time and she was saved. Lauren was very grateful for her rescue from physical death. An even greater rescue has been provided for us—rescue from spiritual death has come in the Person of Jesus Christ. While we were drowning in sin, God sent His Son Jesus to bring life through His own death and resurrection (Rom. 5:8; Eph. 2:5). He did so because He is “rich in mercy” and because of “His great love” (Eph. 2:4). Out of gratefulness, we can help others by telling them of the Rescuer they so desperately need. Rescue the perishing, care for the dying, Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave; Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen, Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save. —Crosby

Those who’ve been rescued should be ready and willing to help in the rescue of others.
