FOREST HILLS Rangers return few from District 6 runner-up season By Mike Wilson

of Mainline Newspapers

The 2013 high school football season will be Don Bailey’s 40th at the helm of the Forest Hills Rangers, and the thrill of starting a new season has yet to diminish. “I’m still excited about it, he said. “As long as I keep getting excited about it, I’ll keep doing it. Perhaps the most excitement about Forest Hills football this season surrounds junior quarterback Joe Donoughe, who had a breakout sophomore season for the Rangers under center in 2012 and took the team to the District 6 Class AA championship game. “We’re going to build our offense around the skills that Joe and our receivers have, Bailey said. “Our receivers both have played, but not much at that position. Unfortunately, that’s a trend for Forest Hills this season, with just

four starters returning on the passing game this season offense, and only three on falls to receivers Tyler Shima, defense. One of the biggest loss- Shareef Blough and Dallas es is all-star running back Shawn McClintock and tight ends Dell. We would like to be Snedden and Jared Shope also balanced if we could, but we’ll graduating, the responsibility of dance with whoever we take to

the dance, whether it be running the football or throwing the football. Adding to the emphasis on the passing game is that just one offensive lineman returns from last year’s team, Tony Gibson. Bailey described the offensive line as “raw, noting they may need to use a freshman in the starting lineup. “We’ve been working on a lot of passing patterns in practice, said Shima. “We have a lot of speed between me, Shareef, Dallas and Dusty Ohler. And with a lot of speed on the outside, we’re going to look to get our quarterback on the edge. We did that successfully last year. Shima is one of the three returning defensive starters, playing safety last year, and will be counted on to help shut down a lot of the experienced offenses around the Laurel Highlands this season. “I think the conference will be

even stronger than it was last year, Bailey said. “When you look at the teams that I think have improved, teams that made the playoffs last year – Bishop McCort, Bishop Guilfoyle, Cambria Heights, Penn Cambria, Richland – they’ll be just as strong this year. I think the conference is in for a very strong and exciting year. But even a tough-as-usual conference and young, small team won’t keep the Rangers from having high expectations, because they dealt with the same problems last year and still reached the district championship game. “I expect nothing less than last year, Donoughe said. “Nobody even expected us to make playoffs last year. I have high expectations and I know what our team can accomplish. The Rangers open the season Saturday afternoon at Westmont Hilltop.

Panthers take ‘new year’ to a new level

By Mike Wilson

of Mainline Newspapers

Whether it’s the new scoreboard that will light up Penn Cambria’s football field in the coming fall Friday evenings, or the brand new black and bright blue uniforms yet to see the dirt scuffs and grass stains of a game, it’s plain to see there is a new approach to football in Cresson in 2013. “This year is going to be different, said junior running back Jake Hurley. “New players, new uniforms, new team, basically. Also new is the head coach, Jason Grassi, a Penn Cambria Middle School teacher and former assistant high school football coach at Portage Area. Grassi was hired in the offseason to take over the program after Ernie Fetzer resigned near the end of last season. And the turnout for the new coach has been staggering. “Since I took over, the weight

But with the graduation of two key receivers last year – Nate Keagy and James Mardula – the passing game, too, will have a new look this season. “Our receivers are working very hard, Tsikalas said. “They might have a different skill set [from Keagy and James Mardula], but they’re definitely valuable to the team. The Panthers open the season Friday night against Greater Johnstown at Trojan Stadium. Though it will be Grassi’s first game as varsity head coach in the Laurel Highlands, he’s no stranger to the deep conference. “I’ve always been a Laurel Highlands guy from my time playing at Penn Cambria, he said. “It’s always a battle. There’s never a game that you say you can win easily. “All we’re focused on now is Johnstown, Grassi continued. “I don’t even know who we play the second week of the season. It’s Johnstown right now. We’ll move on week to week. Grassi’s approach is one of many that have been a hit with his players so far. “We’re really impressed with the coaching staff so far, Tsikalas said. “I think they’re going to put in a lot of hard work and prepare us for the games well. The guys are all really excited so I think we should have a pretty good season. “We play hard, we play four quarters of football, we never give up and we’re going to scrap and fight until the end, Grassi added. “That’s the mindset we’re putting into these guys and hopefully we see that when the season rolls around.
