World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Statewide Awareness Campaign
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is an important day for raising awareness about elder abuse prevention and intervention. In Maine, elder abuse awareness is particularly important due to our state’s rapidly aging population. This year, the Maine Council on Elder Abuse Prevention is asking all elder abuse prevention and intervention advocates to involve their local businesses in raising awareness about elder abuse. What you can do: Contact your local businesses and ask them to post a message about elder abuse on the signs – digital or otherwise – outside of their businesses. The message that will be used throughout the state is: “No Excuse for Elder Abuse. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15.” Any combination of those two phrases – or both phrases – works! When should you ask? World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is Saturday, June 15 so it would be best to start as soon as possible. If a business is closed on Saturdays, ask them to post the message on Friday – an extra day of awareness is always helpful! Should you do anything else? Email your list of local businesses that commit to supporting elder abuse awareness to Dona at Dona.L.Garippa@maine. gov – we will compile a list of all businesses across the state. Also take pictures of the signs on June 15! We’ll post them on our soon to be ready website.
