The rich, densely vegetated landscape was highly valued by First Nations and early European settlers for its bountiful resources. Before European settlement, Mississauga was dominated by pine, birch, spruce, and poplar trees. First Nations such as the Wendat and the Mississaugas settled throughout the Credit River Valley. These dense communities often developed complex political and economic networks, as well as defensive and ceremonial landforms and structures.

Immigration to The City of Mississauga increased heavily during this time period, triggering a boom in development concentrated in the Meadowvale West area. Policy changes in the mid-2000’s influenced growth and development in Peel Region. The Greenbelt Plan, Growth Plan, and Provincial Policy Statement caused increasingly dense suburban growth in Meadowvale West.

Churchill common is leftover developer driven park that is located in the southeast of Mississauga, surrounded by 4 schools, a residential neighborhood as well as six soccer fields. Because of the single function of the park and unclear boundary between school and public property, the park currently lost its identity and is facing the security problems especially for the elementary schools. Our overall strategy will be creating a gradient of space from school to public that is connected by a meandering path which can created an identity for the suburban park with minimal amount of intervention.

The project aims to construct a bridge above the Toronto railway to reconnect the neighbourhood that was cut through by the railway ,transform the “Toronto Death Bike way” and re-link wild life corridor along the rail way. In this sense , the project will focus on 3 intersections: human and human, human and nature, nature and nature. The design will start by revealing 3 stories and how could this bridge change these stories.

Bronkton Village is a neighbourhood that was cut into half by the railway. For the dwellers live in the east side, they need to walk for 1000 m to the Sorauren Park on the other side of this neighbourhood.

Toronto is facing habitat fragmentation. The linear green space along the rail way that has large ecological diversity is fenced off and disconnect with other green space like Sorauren Park.

A 40-year-old woman on a bicycle was stuck and killed by a truck on Dundas Street West when they were both trying to turn right. Police said it was a “preventable” collision.

Gradient Flux aims to connect the ecological communities between the West Toronto Rail path and High Park, through Sorauren Park and its adjacent corridors. Located near Dundas St. W. and Lansdowne Ave, Sorauren Park has a history of industrial use and poor soil condition. In the 1990s, the brown field site was capped with soil and converted into a multi-functional park however, it was planned with ecological sustainability as a subservient element. As the soil is not deep enough for a healthy vegetative community and canopy to grow, the park cannot sustain wildlife diversity. Gradient Flux combines ecological routes with program to generate a socially and ecologically sustainable landscape by connecting communities and the application of a gradient in the distribution of ecology 1995 2008 2014 2023 and program, landform, and planting scheme.
