‘Historic’ Emerald Hill Library and Heritage Centre The City of Port Phillips’ Mayor Amanda Stevens launched the Emerald Hill Library and Heritage Centre in late October, a $3million refurbishment of the 100-year old former South Melbourne Post Office building.

Promising to be a mecca for anyone interested in cultural heritage or family history, the Centre features purpose-built facilities for heritage and local history research and improved library facilities for public use.

Mayor Stevens said, “The City of Port Phillip is committed to fostering lifelong learning in the community through offering affordable and accessible facilities, activities and services across the municipality. I’m pleased the new Centre will provide improved spaces and opportunities for new programs and projects to engage the community, from the very young and to our seniors, to

The Centre will provide research areas that will include access to microfiche and microfilm, and group workspaces for heritage and history related activities. Those researching heritage or local or family history will be able to use a range of drop-in and appointmentbased services, including: • Access local history research resources • Photo reproduction services • Guided walks and information for self-guided walks

• Appointments-based consultation with our cultural heritage officer and local history librarian The new centre also provides more space for local library services, including more books, DVD’s and CD’s, new children’s areas as well as a courtyard, Wi-Fi access and space for programs and group based learning. The Emerald Hill Library and Heritage Centre will be open to the public from Monday, 11 November. The Emerald Hill Festival held on Sunday, 27 October was the culmination of a week of celebrations in launching the new centre.
