Margaret Tabor ArtEd 130 Final Reflection
We started this course off with writing out three goals we had for this class. My goals were to learn how to better teach art to my future students, to learn more about various artists, and to learn how to help students progress in their art development. I felt that if I fulfilled those goals by the end of the course, I would be a better educator for it. My students could only benefit from what I was learning in this course. At the end of this course, I still stand with that belief and believe that I fulfilled those goals. I feel that I learned how to better teach art to my future students. I was afraid of repeating the “art projects my teachers had given me when I was younger. I did not and do not want to be the teacher to hand out craft kits and have students prove they can follow directions and assemble something that requires no creativity. I feel that because of the learner characteristics assignment I know what would be an age appropriate assignment would be and the abilities that students have at different grade levels. Through the integrated lesson plan assignment, I know what has to go into making an art lesson plan. I feel very comfortable that I achieved this goal.
My second goal was to learn about various artists outside of my personal favorite of Van Gogh. I feel that I achieved this and possibly slightly more than I was expecting. Each lesson we had had a contemporary artist tied into it. We would then create something, quite oftenly in the style of the artist. A great example of our class doing that would be the Gardenscapes and Daily Monster projects. I achieved this goal more than I was expecting because not only do I now know about several artists that I did not know about before, but I also now have a resource to look up contemporary artists. I know I can use PBS Art21 to research different artists. I feel that I have been given the tools to better teach my students about different artists and even contemporary artists. My last goal was to learn how to help students progress in their art development. Before this class, I would have described myself as not an artistic or creative person. After this class, I understand that artistic ability can be taught therefore I can help encourage students to not feel like I did. The learner characteristics assignment helped me achieve this goal because it helped show me what skills were age appropriate. It also showed me where these students are socially and cognitively. It showed me what I can expect from a student in their age range, for example starting around 12-13 years-old students are going
through a crisis of realism. With that information, I know how to better cater to their artistic development. I feel that through this class I achieved my goals. I wanted to learn how to better teach art to my future students, to learn more about various artists, and to learn how to help students progress in their art development. I feel that because of this, my students will really benefit.
