Fifth Grade Writing Workshop essays

Fund-A-Need Fund-a-need Essays essays Fund-A-Need The Columbia University’s Teachers College Reading & Writing Project Home Grown Reading & Writing Institute (K-8) The ability to write well is a critical skill and the cornerstone of a strong education. Over the last year, several of our district teachers and administrators have received advanced training at the Reading & Writing Institute at Columbia University¹s Teachers College in New York. The teachers who have participated in this training have found it to be a remarkable program that significantly accelerates their ability to teach our students how to become strong writers and skilled readers. Our Fund-A-Need this year will raise money to bring instructors from Teachers College to Las Lomitas this summer, to make this powerful teaching strategy available to all of our teachers in grades K-8. Called Home Grown Institutes, these programs emphasize “holding students accountable for doing their best work, using literature to help students craft their writing, and [implementing] classroom structures that support inquiry and collaboration.” They have proven successful across the country and around the world and are tailored to suit the teachers’ and the schools’ needs. The teachers, in turn, will help all of the children in our district better develop writing and reading skills. Essential to proper communication - expressing ideas and messages well, building sound arguments and effectively persuading – writing with ease and good writing skills make us more confident about organizing our thoughts verbally as well. Vision is created through writing. This exciting opportunity will allow us to give our students these gifts. We hope you will give generously to support this worthy and important program.

5th Grade Classroom Writing Assignment The students of Room 47 (and a few from Room 63) wanted to share their enthusiasm for Writer’s Workshop. They decided the best way to do this would be to write short essays using the writing process, which involves brainstorming, flash-drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Students spent 10-15 minutes brainstorming, and then they flash drafted (speedily wrote) their essays in about 30 minutes. Next, students used post-it notes and “carrots” to revise their stories. After students revised, they edited for grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.  Finally, students published their work. This whole process took about two hours. A typical writer’s workshop unit lasts about a month and includes multiple bends, or phases. The daily writing chunk is about an hour, beginning with a brief mini-lesson. Students then write for about forty minutes before sharing their work. While students are writing the teacher conferences and works with small groups and individuals. This means that every student is receiving targeted instruction to help them grow as a writer.  Thank you for your support. Karen Schutten 5th Grade Teacher La Entrada
