“Architecture is frozen music.” - Goethe

PERSONAL DESIGN STATEMENT Design is structured in some of the same ways that a song is composed. Architecture and music share common elements and principles, such as rhythm, texture, harmony, proportion, and dynamics. Behind both, there is a purpose that evokes an emotional response. I build my designs on the motif that they tell a story, and can express a feeling just as a piece of music can. A loud crescendo in a song can be portrayed as a huge open room with vast ceiling heights. Materials and proper space planning can create a mood that is seen, rather than heard. My goal is to design spaces that are welcoming and lasting, while at the same time, they provoke a sense of curiosity and imagination.

Marvin K. Peterson Library

The University of New Haven Library is a resource library where users can access information, receive help with work, relax with peers, and grab a quick snack or refreshment. The goal of the Peterson Library renovation is to launch the facility in to the modern world of teaching and lerning, and create a popular and desirable destination for users.

Inspiration Image Board Images were collected throughout the preliminary design phase in order to represent the different ideas that were to be represented in the library. Such as, bold graphics, wayfinding, technology, and stimulating work spaces.

Library Application for Users Creating a charger cloud makes it possible for users to stay connected 24/7, and have the library right at their fingertips. Users can access databases and the digital library of textbooks and resources. The application also has information reguarding library events, room reservations, ebooks, wireless printing, and the daily cafe menu.

The University of New Haven Library is designed to be the campus’ “cloud” for information and recreation. The convenient and interactive facility acts as a home base for the campus community where users can work, eat, socialize, and relax. It is a place to recharge and refuel not only devices, but the users mind and body. The library combines both education and student life in one space.

COFFEE TABLE

The Trio Coffee Table offers not only the ease of placing a cup of tea, but also allows for maximum storage. Drawers, a removable tray, and a hollow center are perfect spot to store blanets, books make this table very versatile.

Eccentricity Light Fixture

Inspired by the film “Benny and Joon”

The Eccentricity light fixture’s design was derived from the film “Benny and Joon.” The main character has the most eclectic style throughout the entire movie, as well as odd behavioral patterns. Polka dots and stripes were represented a lot through out the main characters wardrobe. The movie has an unusual fun flare to it, which is represented in the pendant.

will reduce the heat island effect as well as add extra insulation. The garden will keep the office cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

OPERABLE LOUVER WINDOWS

are located on both the north and south sides of the building to allow easy wind travel, and help with ventilation.

A LIGHT SHELF

on the south side of the building will help keep out the strong summer sun, but will still allow the warm winter sun during the cold months.

Harvest Place

Mixed-Use Affordable Housing LEED Silver

The concept of Harvest Place is the idea of growth. The residential spaces are designed to target recent graduates, and provides them with a home, which allows their imaginations to grow. Commercial spaces are also included in the building. A restaurant and culinary learning center both add a social environment to the community. Lastly, a Farmer’s Market is located on the site to incorporate neighbors and friends in the efforts of having a growing healthy community.

In order for a city to be successful, a diversity of ages and incomes is necessary. Within the New Haven Area there are approximately seven different colleges and universities. All of which have students living around the downtown area and East Rock neighborhood. Haven Place is an affordable housing unit designed to target recent graduates. Bringing younger people in to the area will make it thrive with a more diverse community and ideas.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

University of New Haven Art from the Heart

University of New Haven Art From The Heart works along side Circle of Care to donate a new bedroom to a local child that is battling cancer. Our main task is to fundraise $1,500 to provide new paint, furniture and accessories for his or her room. As a group, we fundraise, design, and construct the room. University of New Haven Art from the Heart’s main focus is giving back to the community. Through collaboration and creativity, we design a bedroom for a young boy or girl to come home and enjoy during such a difficult time.
