Mike Russell, Val Bentley, Will Green and Bryan Michie were delighted to accept the Marsh Local Ornithological Award and cheque for £1000 on behalf of Henfield Birdwatch from the Chairman of the BTO, Professor Ian Newton. The judging panel from the British Trust for Ornithology was impressed with how a local group from a village of 5,500 inhabitants could produce a book of such quality and involve so many local people. Henfield Birdwatch published its first survey of the birds of Henfield in 2000 and carries out a survey of the parish every five years to monitor how the birds are faring over time. According to Mike Russell “What sets this apart from other local projects is that it involves people who do not normally participate in surveys. We deliberately encourage those who feel they wouldn’t be able to take part because they weren’t experts - they are the very people we want to get involved. It’s a birdwatching project for non-birdwatchers.” For further information please contact Mike Russell on 01273 497561 or e-mail mikerussell@sussexwt.org.uk
