ello and welcome to the September issue of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick – this month we celebrate our 13th year of publication. Over the past 13 years we have been pleased with how we have helped local residents, societies and businesses in our community and do hope that you have found our magazine helpful and enjoyable to read and use.

We have lots to read in this month’s issue from the latest article by Judy Upton on Evelyn Waugh, this year’s Shoreham 2018 Wordfest as well as Mark Oakley offering the latest advice on gardening and collecting water! In addtion we have all our local articles from our contributors which you can read in this month’s issue, including advice from Louis Jones on how to protect those Footballer Ankles now that football season has stared and injuries can happen. Shoreham Memorial Installation to begin within weeks

A

memorial to the victims of the Shoreham Air Show tragedy is now taking shape with installation set to begin around the end of this month.

A moving series of sculptures and artworks are being created in the studio of local artists, husband and wife team Jane Fordham and David Parfitt (photo below), ready to be installed on the banks of the Adur as fitting statements of remembrance to the eleven people who died in the crash in August 2015.

A specially designed memorial bench is to be installed close to eleven individual arches, one for each of the victims, on the east side of the river near the entrance to the Shoreham Toll Bridge. Looking through the arches will take the eye to the west side of the river where a series of small dots of light, again numbering eleven, on reed-like structures will sway gently in the wind.

Jane said: “We are making good progress and can start to see the shape of things emerging. The designs may not look like a memorial but they are intended as a place for reflection to accommodate as many people’s needs as possible.

“We are also very conscious that a lot of people already use that area, for walking, picnicking, cycling and quiet contemplation, so we wanted to create something that reflects the past, present and future; where people can go

along to and engage with in their own way.”

Jane and David believe they will have created a place of remembrance while embracing the calm and serenity of the river Adur. Their concept of an installation on the banks of the river was chosen by the families of the victims, many of whom are still involved with the design process as the scheme develops.

No specific time frame has been set for the completion of the installation which will simply emerge rather than be the subject of an official opening.

Councillor Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “Jane and David have been so sensitive to the requirements of the brief and have created a wonderful piece of outdoor art for people to both remember those lost in 2015 but also to enjoy as they walk through this beautiful environment.”

The money for the sculptures was raised by officers of Adur District Council and included donations from the Council, Worthing Borough Council, West Sussex County Council, Brighton and Hove City Council and local businesses.

Shoreham’s History Online

S

horehambysea.com is a local history website with an extensive collection of historical articles and photographs of Shoreham, its buildings, events and the people that lived there.

Reference material, paintings, historic maps and over 3,000 photographs are displayed as well as census returns, parish records and street directories to provide a unique free resource for anyone interested in their local history.

Set up by three Shoreham residents the website has taken many thousands of hours to research, write, edit and digitise – much has been added over the years in partnership with West Sussex Library services, The Marlipins, British Library, and from local residents. There is also a discussion forum for residents.

There are many highlights to browse: local historian Roger Bateman has created some evocative “Ghost” photographs – then and now montages of familiar Shoreham locations.

By special arrangement with the Shoreham Herald their popular ‘Bygones’ articles are included in the website. Roger has also created videos; so take a walk along Shoreham’s High Street one hundred years ago, visit the WW1 Military Camp and even the Victorian Swiss Gardens.

You will be able to listen to the voices from the past – a collection of audio recordings of Shoreham personalities that, but for this website, may otherwise have passed into oblivion.

Shoreham WordFest 2018 Shoreham-by-Sea’s Annual Festival of Words and Ideas

September – October 2018

enni Murray and Kate Adie are just two of the big names coming to Shoreham Wordfest this year with talks about the impact women have made on society.

Also on the Wordfest programme are celebrated Yorkshire poet, Ian McMillan, who will give a wry and humorous take on modern life through his poetry and commentary. Peter Owen-Jones, South Downs priest, author and TV presenter, will talk about environmental change and our response to it. Attila the Stockbroker launches his new album of early music and poetry focusing on Charles ll ‘Great Escape’ from Shoreham Harbour.

There is drama with “Where is Mrs Christie?” about the real-life mystery of eleven days when Agatha Christie went missing. Shakespeare’s classic tale of love and loss, Romeo and Juliet, films and talks about Laurie Lee, Flying Scotsman and the role of women in early film.

The festival’s theme of All Change reflects the centenary commemoration of WW1, but also of women’s suffrage and so many seismic changes reflected in society and the arts over the past century. The Wordfest keynote address will be from Sussex University’s Professor Norman Vance, who will give an illustrated lecture on 1918 and after.

There are plenty of children and family events as well with two great children’s theatre shows based on books, a children’s picture book author and two creativity sessions.

Wordfest starts with a series of creative writing events on every Saturday in September, all led by published authors and poets, leading to an open mic event when people can share short readings of their own work.

There are new authors, talks, walks and even a Wordfest party evening, so something in this action packed autumn programme.

ere we are at the start of the new school term and we are looking forward to welcoming old and new students to all our instrumental group classes.

We’ve been out and about during the summer with our instruments and musical games. The highlight has to be to seeing such a fabulous reaction to our NEW jSax. Children as young as 4 were immediately intrigued and enthused by the look and sound, and were able to play a note straight away.

Using finger numbers to replace music letters and notation, children were able to play simple pop tunes within minutes.

Our version of Hold Back the River by James Bay, was perfect for the rock and roll theme of Beach Dreams.

The jSax is the latest instrument to be launched by NUVO. Like all their instruments, created by Max Clissold specifically for children, the jSax opens up the possibility of playing a woodwind instrument much earlier for young children of all ages. Collecting Rainwater

S

o September it is and I think we all knew it couldn’t last all the way through the school holidays in August, so thankfully we have had some cooler weather and some very heavy bouts of welcome rain.

It should be borne in mind that the weathermen are predicting warmer months for September and October, but time will tell!

It has been quite remarkable to see how areas of lawn that were brown and looked long dead have sprung back to life after the rainfall. I always find it interesting to see how different and quickly a lawn comes back after rainfall, as opposed to water from a sprinkler. It just shows the difference the other nutrients and minerals that come down with the rain make. A good indicator of how important it is to make use of rainwater from water butts. On the subject of water butts, now would be a good time to assess how far you fell short with rainwater collecting and whether it’s worth getting another one to help bolster supplies for dry spells. I have a feeling we may get more of these in the long term.

It is fairly safe to say that the lawns have taken a battering over this summer. Once they re-establish themselves as we get into the wetter weather, it would be well worth considering giving them a boost to help them recover with some lawn feed. Having looked around at many lawns, I think there will also be quite a few that need repair work done on them as they will be past help. It’s quite an easy job to seed smaller patches after you’ve raked off the dead lawn.

Indeed, most plants in the garden, one way or another have taken a battering this year from the weather, which will have stressed them. Like most things in nature they will recover, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give them a helping hand. Most plants will welcome a good feed, be it a liquid or a granular type. Don’t go over the top with it though and follow the instructions. I would avoid doing anything that will stress plants too much, such as moving them. It has also been quite noticeable that the ground has shrunk back significantly in many places. This can lead to plants become unstable at the roots, so as the ground gets wetter check your shrubs and heel in around the base to firm up the ground and avoid problems in the coming autumnal weather.

As I said it was nice whilst it lasted, but it really is nice to have seen some rain and a return back to a certain level of British summer time reality! It wont stop me having another ice cream though!

Seasonal Help for Glowing Skin

A

s an Aromatherapist and natural beauty expert I have seen huge improvements in my clients’ skin with the right treatment. 4. Stress can have a huge impact on our skin, when stressed we release something called Cortisol. Cortisol decreases the skin’s natural production of something called hyaluronic acid, a natural moisturiser. It can also damage the skin’s protective qualities that allow it to stay supple.

Corsitol can also make our skin more oily and therefore prone to spot outbreaks. We can’t always avoid getting stressed yet meditation can be a great way to reset our emotional equilibrium, it doesn’t have to be complicated, just take 5 minutes out of your day and set a timer then count from 1 to 10 on each of your in-breaths and then from 1 to 10 on your out-breath. If your mind gets distracted just start counting back from 1. This simple practice can help to reduce anxiety and stress and help you feel clearer and more focused plus the relaxation will really show on your face.

5. Create a tidy and organised environment. This may seem a strange one yet this can help create a happy mind and body which can reflect in our face. It’s a great time to have a clear out and add elements of beauty to our home to create a pleasing home environment to cosy into during the Autumn. Use this time to enjoy the continued energy that can be enjoyed during the summer to take good care of you and your skin.

Footballer’s Ankle

T

he new football season is here and after the excitement of the World Cup, there has been very little in the way of a break for professionals. This month I wanted to focus on a relatively common injury known as “Footballer’s Ankle”.

What is Footballer’s Ankle?

Footballer’s ankle is an impingement of soft tissue and bone, which can be due to scar tissue and inflammation, or bone spurs that form in the front and back of the ankle joint. This

can limit range of motion and cause pain. The classic form of impingement is referred to as “footballer’s ankle.” Despite the name, this can happen in many different types of sports including football, basketball, and in dancers.

It occurs when the ankle is forced repeatedly into end range plantar flexion such as when pointing the toes away from you or dorsiflexion, when the toes are pointing up towards you, or movements such as squatting.

How can we Treat Footballer’s Ankle?

There are different ways to treat Footballer’s Ankle starting with conservative treatment, leading all the way up to invasive treatment such as surgery.

1. Deep tissue massage can work well to break down scar tissue and help assist tissue repair around the ankle joint.

2. U ltrasound can be a good way to help recovery and further assist the breakdown of scar tissue.

3. S tretching and strengthening exercises are necessary to help protect the ankle and also gain more mobility.

4. In some cases cortisone injection therapy may be required, where a stubborn injury does not respond well alone to conservative treatment, or where ankle mobility is very limited.

5. In some cases, surgery may be required to shave osteophytes (small bony formations that obstruct joint mobility).

A physiotherapist can assess a sportsperson’s ankle and diagnose your injury to decide on the best course of treatment.

You can maximise Your tax-efficient savings through a range of individual savings accounts (isas) – and the earlier You start, the better.

You can invest up to £20,000 in the 2018/19 tax year under your main ISA allowance using a mix of different types. Each has its own rules including limits, investment vehicles and access.

RegulaR ISaS An ISA is a tax-wrapper, through which you can invest in cash, stocks and shares, or a mixture. You don’t pay UK tax on interest earned on cash, or on income or capital gains derived from funds or other investments in a stocks and shares ISA. Nor do you have to include these accounts on a self-assessment form. There are no general restrictions on when you can withdraw funds, but special terms may apply for individual providers – for example with fixed-rate cash ISAs. InnovatIve FInance ISaS This ISA allows investment in peer-to-peer lenders or crowdfunding activities. These may offer attractive interest rates, but be aware that these higher–risk investments are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. lIFetIme ISaS You can put up to £4,000 a year into a Lifetime ISA and receive a 25% government-funded bonus, but you must be under 40 when you start. You can contribute until your 50th birthday. The funds can be used to help buy your first home or save for retirement and there are investment and cash options.

If you withdraw funds before the age of 60, and are not buying your first home, there will be a withdrawal charge equivalent to 25% of the amount you withdraw, unless you are terminally ill.

Help to Buy ISaS These cash accounts are for first-time buyers, but you can only open a new one until November 2019. You can save up to £200 a month and an extra £1,000 in the first month. The government adds a 25% bonus, up to a maximum of £3,000, in addition to any interest earned.

There are no age restrictions on starting, but you will lose the bonus if you use the savings for other purposes.

JunIoR ISaS Parents and others can save up to £4,260 tax free for a child, each year. Junior ISAs (JISAs) work in a similar way to regular ISAs, with cash and investment options available. The key difference is that the child cannot withdraw funds until their 18th birthday. At this point they can convert it into a regular ISA. Contributions to JISAs are in addition to your main ISA allowance. It’s a great way to help a child build up assets for the future.

Evelyn Waugh

T

he famous novelist Evelyn Waugh (1903 – 1966) went to school at Lancing College. Born in Hillfield Road, West Hampstead on the 28th October 1903, he was christened Arthur Evelyn St John Waugh, but was known in the family and in the wider world as Evelyn. He was the son of the publisher Arthur Waugh and his wife Catherine.

Evelyn began as a day pupil at Heath Mount preparatory school. A lively boy of many interests, he had written and completed his first story “The Curse of the Horse Race” by the age of seven. He soon began to write plays for his friends to perform in too. In 1914, after the First World War had begun, Waugh and other boys from the Boy Scout Troop of Heath Mount School were sometimes employed as messengers at the War Office.

In May 1917, Evelyn Waugh joined Lancing College as a boarder. There he was known to be single-minded, for example during a football match, he once stood in one spot for the entire game and when the ball came towards him just kicked it in any direction. While clearly not enamoured of football, he became president of the debating society and editor of the school magazine. He also won numerous art and literature prizes. He then attended Hertford College, Oxford.

There he neglected his studies to throw himself into the social side of university life, becoming part of a hard partying set.

Poor exam results meant he lost his scholarship and had to leave without obtaining his degree.

After briefly going to art school, Waugh worked as assistant schoolmaster in various posts, a role he did not enjoy and did chiefly for the money. His experiences as a teacher influenced his first comic novel ‘Decline And Fall’, as did his own school days at Lancing. Published in 1928, ‘Decline And Fall’ was extremely successful and in the same year Waugh married Evelyn Gardner. The couple divorced in 1930 and Waugh was received into the Roman Catholic Church that same year.

Waugh’s novels, which often combined social satire of the times with comic characters included the London set ‘Vile Bodies (1930) and ‘Black Mischief’ (1932) set in Africa. Waugh also established himself as a travel writer, journalist and man of letters, journeying through Africa and South America.

Although apart from Lancing College there are few references to our local area in Waugh’s work, ‘A Handful Of Dust’ does feature Brighton, when unfaithful wife Brenda Last, demands her husband Tony is discovered there in a compromising position to enable her to acquire a divorce.

Waugh saw the novel as a comment on what he saw as the moral vacuity of the 1930s. In 1937 Waugh married Laura Herbert, a cousin of his first wife, moving to Somerset and Gloucestershire, and having six children.

During the Second World War, Evelyn Waugh served in the Royal Marines in Crete and Yugoslavia, yet still found time to write ‘Put Out More Flags’ (1942). He later also served in the Horse Guards. His wartime experiences were also put to good use in the trilogy of books; ‘Men At Arms’, ‘Officers and Gentlemen’ and ‘Unconditional Surrender’.

The war also features in Waugh’s most well known novel ‘Brideshead Revisited’ which was published in 1945. Narrated by a man named Charles Ryder, it describes his involvement with an aristocratic Roman Catholic family, after he meets their youngest son Sebastian Flyte at Oxford University. For Waugh, this novel marked a change from his usual satirical style and was darker and more moving and complex. He described the book’s theme as ‘the operation of divine grace on a group of diverse but closely connected characters’. In I980, the book was turned into a major TV series starring Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews and in 2008 it was made into a film. According to a BBC website, scenes from this film were shot in Lancing College’s chapel. The novels ‘A Handful Of Dust’ and ‘Vile Bodies’ have also been adapted as movies and ‘Decline And Fall’ was another Waugh book given the TV treatment recently.

In 1960, Waugh was offered the honour of a CBE but declined, believing that he should instead have been given a knighthood. By the 1960s however, he was in poor health.

On the 10th of April 1966, after attending a Latin Mass in a neighbouring village with members of his family, Evelyn Waugh died of heart failure at his Combe Florey home, the village in Somerset to which he and his family had moved in 1956. He was only sixty-two.

Medicine is in Lucy’s bones

S

he studied social anthropology, worked as a law firm business manager for ten years, but has now found her true vocation – as a foot specialist.

Lucy Rutler, an inspiration to those who believe in ‘it’s never too late’, now feels fulfilled as she graduates this summer from the University of Brighton with a first class (Hons) degree in Podiatry.

Lucy will be practicing at The First Foot Clinic in Shoreham, initially every Friday.

Lucy said: “I am in my 40s so I think the ‘never too late’ phrase is highly appropriate in my case. My father was a GP and my mother an Occupational Therapist, so I guess the medicine thing was in my bones. I didn’t really give my future career much thought first time round in my late teens, so I just studied what I was most interested in at the time which was basically travelling the world and learning about other cultures.”

“When I took the decision to study again, podiatry appealed because it’s medical, it felt achievable and it really appealed to me to specialise in one part of the body. Also, feet are so important to maintaining mobility and independence – and I have seen both my parents struggle with this in their later years.”

“I absolutely loved the opportunity of studying something new in my 40s and am really excited by my new career. It’s been very tough though balancing the demands of the course with my children’s needs and has resulted in many late nights and lots of parental guilt but it’s doable and I highly recommend it.”

Hold onto that summer spirit in mind and body

I

t can be so hard to return to the old routine, after a summer break! Whether it’s work, school (and the school runs), college or simply the daily chores of keeping house – not to mention the long days shortening – these can drain us and affect our wellbeing. Here are some tips from the practitioners at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, for keeping yourself healthy in mind and body as the nights draw in.

Beat the Blues

The existence of S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is medically acknowledged as a mental health problem – where the lack of daylight in the autumn and winter leads to low mood. If you already have problems with low mood/depression, these can get worse at this time of year.

Sometimes simply recognising this is a first important step and it can be helpful to set up things that support you and allow you to treat yourself with more compassion and kindness at this time. For instance: 1. T aking time every day to do something for YOU – simply reading a favourite book, having a long bath with bubbles, listening to or watching a favourite programme, taking a class of some kind, singing, playing an instrument…

2. Treating yourself to a regular relaxing massage / aromatherapy / reflexology session 3. Using deep breathing techniques and mindfulness practices to help reduce stress and anxiety

4. P erhaps addressing the deeper causes of your feelings of low mood/depression through talking therapies from a qualified professional (hypnotherapist, counsellor etc) 5. E xercise! Read on…

Don’t Get Stuck – Keep Moving

Our bodies can be seen as machines that need to keep moving to function properly, just as most mechanical things with moving parts need oiling and continual movement to work efficiently and not seize up and rust! Osteopaths see the ‘oil’ that our bodies need as being the optimum flow of blood and lymphatic fluid – simplistically put, blood carries oxygen and nutrients to our muscular and nervous systems – to allow them to function; and lymph contains chemicals that fight infection and are essential for a healthy immune system. The best way to ‘oil’ your joints, muscles, brain and internal organs is through movement and good breathing techniques. Even if you can’t get out as much as you have done in the summer, you can STILL KEEP MOVING. Just make sure you don’t stay in any one position for more than 10-15 minutes. If you can’t get up from your chair (glued to your project on the screen or stuck in a meeting…), try one of these easy moves! (Stop if you experience any pain other than a relieving muscle stretch.)

1. R oll your shoulders up towards your ears as you breathe in deeply, and then as you breathe out, roll them backwards so that they settle in a relaxed position.

2. G ently tuck your tailbone underneath you to curve your lower back and then reverse the movement so you have a very slight arch at the bottom of your back. This should be a subtle and slow movement to mobilise the base of the spine.

3. C lasp your hands behind your neck and bring your elbows as close together as you can in front of your nose. Breathe in deeply as you gently open your elbows to the sides and feel your lungs expand and a gentle stretch in your upper back.

The Health Benefits of Spices

E

ach month we bring you a recipe from one of our Eat Out Eat Well (EOEW) award winners who also shares with us a healthy recipe they enjoy cooking.

This month it’s the turn of The Mahaan Restaurant in Montague Street, Worthing, and owner Mr Askor Ali is offering us one of his curry recipes, the Vegetable Rogan Josh. The restaurant offers authentic Indian and Bangladeshi dishes and has won numerous curry awards over the years and has a food hygiene rating of 5.

In the very hot weather we had recently, you might have thought twice about eating spicy and ‘hot’ food. However, the irony is that these types of food can help the body to cool down as they encourage sweating… and sweating is the body’s natural response to heat in an effort to reduce body temperature. Traditionally in Asia, every meal, including breakfast, contains a good mix of herbs and spices. As well as sometimes cooling us down, they’re beneficial to health in other ways, and their distinct flavours can help to reduce the amount of salt needed to make a dish flavoursome. The amazing colours of some spices – the rich orange-red of paprika, the golden yellow of turmeric and the bright red of saffron strands – tell us of the health benefits of these spices (see the bottom of this article). India, in particular, practises ‘Ayurveda’. This science of wellbeing is at the heart of their traditional medical heritage.

In Ayurveda, herbs and spices are used extensively to help correct imbalances that cause disease and health problems.

For example cinnamon is used to invigorate the circulation and warm digestion, black pepper is also used to increase digestive function and is an excellent tonic for the lungs, whilst mint is used to strengthen and clear both the digestion and the mind.

Mr Askor Ali has owned The Mahaan since 2011 and is very proud of the authenticity of his menu. The restaurant was awarded their first EOEW award in 2016, and then again in Spring 2018.

Vegetable ghee is used in some of the dishes as Mr Ali is very passionate about eating food that is good for you and your heart. Heart health is very important to him. Mr Ali said: “I chose this recipe because it contains a lot of vegetables, and the spices are also particularly healthy ones. It’s also a dish which, as curries go, is not difficult to make.”

Ayurvedic health benefits:

Coriander – the vivid green leaves help reduce allergies and clear toxins and the seeds are used to make tea to help alleviate urinary irritation and cystitis. The leaves are also a good source of vitamin K, which is needed for gut and bone health.

Turmeric – turmeric root is highly thought of and contains a potent flavonoid called curcumin which helps to protect cells from damage and reduce inflammation. The beneficial compounds are fat soluble so eat some fat with dishes containing turmeric.

Garlic – garlic is used to help improve gut health. It’s best to use garlic paste from fresh garlic. Crushed or mash in a pestle and mortar, it keep all the nutrients intact. Garlic contains sulphur 26

and also inulin which encourages the growth of ‘good’ bacteria in the gut. Garlic also contains the mineral chromium which helps to keep blood sugar levels stable.

Ginger – which should be finely chopped and mashed in a pestle/mortar for paste. Fresh ginger contains gingerol which is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. All of these ingredients have anti-inflammatory benefits like many herbs and spices, especially when combined, as in many traditional Indian recipes. Using these spices regularly is a great way to add to your culinary medicinal toolbox!

Method: First heat a cooking pan then proceed by adding the specified quantities of ghee, garlic paste and ginger paste.

When the base has started to turn slightly red, add the onions and peppers.

Follow up by adding salt and stir until it has caramelized.

Put the ¼ pint of water, spices (Haldi, Dhania, Curry Powder) and tomato paste into the cooking pan and leave the base to cook on low heat for 2 minutes.

Proceed by adding vegetables, tomatoes and ½ pint of water into the cooking pan. Leave on medium heat until the sauce becomes slightly thick.

Finish by adding coriander and prepare to serve.

Serving Suggestions: Best served in a medium sized bowl.

Try to keep the tomatoes on the surface of the curry.

This curry complements well with a white basmati rice (or you could try wild rice or brown basmati rice).

I think I have Sciatica?

M

any patients that I see at Sussex Spine Care often describe their back pain as Sciatica, and yet more often than not, they don’t have this particular condition and are in fact dealing with a far less severe form of back pain. We find that so many people are familiar with this term but rarely understand what it means. It’s important to find out which particular type of back pain that you have, as sciatica is extremely painful and can take several months to heal, whereas other types of back pain could take half the time to recover.

What is Sciatica? Sciatica (pronounced sigh-at-eh-kah) is not a medical diagnosis in and of itself – it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Common lower back problems that can cause sciatica symptoms include a lumbar herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis.

The most common of these being lumbar herniated disc often referred to as a slipped disc.

How did this occur? When ligaments in the pelvis are torn or stretched, a separation of the weight bearing sacro-iliac joint takes place. The separation permits one hip to move forward and the other to move backward, changing the leg length. The herniated disc occurs when the vertebrae in the lower lumbar spine are stressed beyond their ability to recover this can lead to a bulge onto the sciatic nerve and produce several of the following symptoms: • Pain down the back of the leg • Burning sensation down the back of the leg • Pins and needles in the leg • Tightness in the leg • Numbness in the leg or back • Poor bowel or bladder control • Pain on sitting, rising , coughing • Coldness in the extremities

How can we treat Sciatica? Early management of the symptoms can make a huge difference in the prognosis, however patients who have suffered for many years can still respond really well to our treatment. I use a combination of chiropractic manipulation, medical acupuncture, muscular relaxation techniques and exercises to get the best results for my patients.

Home Care – Do’s and Don’ts 1. Avoid sudden turns or twists of movement beyond normal limits of motion 2. Avoid extreme bending of your spine in any direction 3. Avoid stooping or bending , rather bend your knees to minimise strain on your lower back 4. When lifting, keep your back straight, bend your knees and hold the object as close to your body as possible 5. Sit up rather than recline in the bath, and on the sofa 6. You can do simple prescribed exercises and stretches to slowly strengthen your body 7. Watch your posture at all times; Stand TALL, Sit TALL, and Think TALL 8. Ice packs to reduce inflammation and Swelling Maintenance of your spine – Clinical research has shown that while disc and bone degeneration may never return to preinjury condition, regular chiropractic care can help prevent further deterioration of the spine.

ROPETACKLE GEARS UP FOR ITS BUSIEST-EVER SEASON

s the leaves begin to turn and the nights draw in, you can rely on Sussex’s most original venue – the Ropetackle Arts Centre, in Shoreham-bySea – to offer a full programme of events to keep you entertained and inspired over the coming months.

Our autumn programme runs from September to New Year’s Eve and is jam-packed with the best live music, comedy, film, talks, literary events, children’s entertainment (including a children’s literature festival and the not-to-be missed Shoreham Panto Robin Hood) and free foyer sessions – something for absolutely everyone to enjoy.

“This is our busiest season ever,” said spokesperson Nicky Thornton. “We have gained such a good reputation over the years with performers and audiences alike that we are now putting on events most weekdays as well as weekends.

It’s really lovely to see so many people enjoying what we do and making good use of their local arts space. We are also seeing people come from further afield as they follow their favourite bands, and those visiting Sussex who just want to give us a try.”

September highlights

In line with the Ropetackle philosophy of supporting up-andcoming talent, the audience can look forward to Niteworks on Thursday 13th September. The four-piece band hail from the Isle of Skye and have just released their second album Air Fàir an Là to critical acclaim. Overseen by esteemed techno producer Alex Menzies, and featuring guest appearances from some of folk’s most notable acts, the album blurs the lines between Scottish traditional music and contemporary electronica. With a light-show, Gaelic vocals and awesome musicianship, this really is a must-see.

Among the other top-quality live music acts on the bill are the breathtaking Fleetwood Bac (endorsed by Mick Fleetwood himself ) (Fri 21st), Damascus-born Maya Youssef (Sun 23rd), who combines her extraordinary musical gifts on the 78-string zither (qanan) with humour and warmth, rock ‘n’ rollers The Bluejays who have been hailed by Maria Elena Holly (Buddy’s widow) as “the most exciting group I’ve seen since the Crickets themselves,” (Thurs 27th) and the delightful Claire Martin OBE and Ray Gelato (Fri 28th) who pay tribute to the Great American Songbook with a sassy, sharp and swinging affair. Hammond organ legend Zoot Money and his Big Roll Band will take you back to 60s Soho on Sat 29th, while timeless pop/rock goddess Sonja Kristina leads a revamped version of the unrivalled Curved Air (Sun 30th) Opera lovers have a choice of events this September, with a double-bill from Giancarlo del Monaco that elegantly intertwines Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (2007) (Sun 2nd) For live opera and an amazing set, the Barefoot Opera present a young and fresh interpretation of Bizet’s Carmen. Pre-show suppers are available for both.

Film buffs will love the hugely-popular Film at Ropetackle’s Let’s Get Quizzical Film Quiz (Weds 26th) Finally, for toddlers we have the welcome return of actress Hannah Summers’ interactive play-fest Short Stories, Tall Tales (Fri 14th) and a new series of films from the Tractor Ted franchise (Fri 21st). For children of all ages, there is the wonderful Little Howard’s Big Show for Kids which was a resounding success at the Edinburgh Festival.
