What is The Meaning of Halloween? By: Randy R. Duke

Ding Dong, Ding Dong……….You open the door and there stands one or more children standing in some sort of costume, highly excited and all screaming at the top of their lungs.…“TRICK or TREAT", with out knowing the meaning of what they are saying or doing.

As an adult, do you know what Halloween represents? Most people are ignorant of what Halloween is all about and for that matter doesn’t care. I grew up trick or treating like most kids in America and never knew what it was all about. We even had a haunted house in the attic of the little country CHURCH I attended!!!! I was like most kids in the fact that all I wanted to do is get as much candy as I could and would do what I had to do to get it!! Including fighting with my brothers and sisters to be the first at the door....Every year I was the devil. I had the most evil, horrible, grotesque, rubber mask that was ever made. I had a pitchfork and my precious mother even sewed me a long pointed tail on my red suit. We all have stories to tell of Halloween, but do you really know what it is all about?? If all you know of it is what I have described above, you may want to read a little further and find out more info about what you are celebrating. Now if you are a pagan you know exactly what it is, if a Christian you are involved in something God forbids and if you just a "good ole boy or girl" you don't care Where did it begin? It began over 2000 yrs ago with people known as the Celtics. They lived in what is today England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This was also the beginning of the Celtic New Year, a time to give thanks to the sun god for the harvest. What is it all about? Halloween, All saints day, all hallows eve or all souls day is a festival. It was held to honor the Samhain the so called "lord of death". It was a Druidical belief that on the eve of this festival Samhain, lord of death, called together the wicked spirits that within the past 12 months had been condemned to inhabit the bodies of animals. It was a pagan belief that on one night of the year the souls of the dead return to their original homes, there to be entertained with food. If food and shelter were not provided, these evil spirits would cast spells and cause havoc toward those failing to fulfill their requests. Sacrifices were offered on this night to the dead spirits because it was thought they visited their earthly dwellings and former friends. There was a prevailing belief among all nations that at death the souls of the good men were taken possession of by good spirits and carried to paradise; but the souls of the wicked men were left to wonder in the space between the earth and the moon, or consigned to the unseen world. These wandering spirits were in the habit of haunting the living...But there were means by which ghosts might be exorcised. To exorcise these ghosts, that is to free yourself from their evil sway, you would have to set out food and provide shelter for them during the night. If they were satisfied with your offerings, they would leave you in peace. If not, they were believed to cast an evil spell on you. In modern day Satanism and Witchcraft covens, this is the day when Satan himself comes to "fellowship" with his followers. Many changes have occurred over the centuries, but one thing ha stayed the same, the practice of giving an "offering" has stayed the same. Oh we do it under the name of fun but what is the real meaning? Is it still the same as in the old days? I say the answer is YES. The Christian Connection The celebration in the Roman Catholic Church, which was later to merge with Samhain, was known as All Saints' Day. All Saints' Day originated in the 7th century when the Pantheon at Rome was wrested from the barbarians, made into a cathedral, and renamed the Church of the Blessed Virgin and All Martyrs. Thus, from honoring "all gods" (which is the meaning of the Greek word "pantheon") the Pantheon became

the center for glorifying all saints. This day that honored all the "hallowed" saints was first observed on the evening of May 13, and was known as the All hallows festival. The day was officially authorized in 835 by Pope Gregory IV after it was moved to November 1 to coincide with Samhain. It began on the evening of October 31, which was called All Hallows Eve. Thus, without forcing the pagans to drop their pagan practices and accept Christianity, the Roman Catholic Church merely made room to accommodate the barbarians. Just as it confiscated the pagan Pantheon for its own uses, this church incorporated the customs of Samhain to further its mission to convert the known world to Catholicism.

The two celebrations made strange bedfellows: one in respect of evil spirits, the other honoring "saints." Nevertheless, the joining of the two celebrations produced a hybrid of beliefs about what was supposed to happen in the spirit world. Souls in purgatory appeared as witches and toads to persons who had wronged them. Halloween fires took on a new meaning and now were used to comfort souls in purgatory as people prayed while holding burning straw in the air. Even the idea of trick-or-treating by evil spirits took on an acceptable church flavor: costumed children went around on All Souls Day offering to fast for the departed souls in return for money or an offering. As the Celts converted to the new religion, they did not forget their stories of the dead traveling to the afterword on Halloween. Rather, exhibitions of this night became more evil and the observance adopted even more malicious overtones. Where do Witches, Black cats and Jack-O-Lanterns fit in? In America it's a pumpkin, but in Europe it was often a turnip, large beet, potato, rutabaga or even a skull with a candle in it. The fearsome face of the jack-o-lantern was representative of the god of the dead, Shamin, who would drive off less powerful evil spirits abroad that night. As glimmering lights flickered over an English marsh or an Irish bog, people imagined dead souls had returned to earth. They would place the jack-o-lantern on posts and in windows to ward off the spirits of the dead on Halloween. The word jack-o-Lantern is an abbreviation of "Jack of the Lantern." Jack is another name for joker or Satan. In the Irish tale, a man named Jack was fond of playing tricks on the devil. Annoyed, the devil tossed Jack a burning coal from hell. With the coal in his "lantern" Jack was condemned to walk the earth forever searching for rest. The jack-o-lantern is a Halloween idol that keeps alive an ancient symbol of demonic superstition. Witches and Black Cats A pagan practice that was not eradicated upon the coming of Christianity was witchcraft. The word "witch" comes from the Anglo-Saxon Wicca, or "wise one." Witches were thought to be possessors of magic. Witches, who worship the deities of nature, have living talismans or symbols through which they derive their dark powers. They invoke evil spirits to enter the bodies of their talismans. Some have dogs, owls, snakes or swine for their talismans, but the most common are cats. The broomstick is a symbol of the male organ, on which the witch mounts and leaps high around the fields to "teach" the crops how high to grow. The notion of flying witches relates to the fact that witches believed they could fly great distances to their feasts by smearing their bodies with ointments containing

drugs. The drugs gave them psychedelic "trips" making them think they flew. Witchcraft is demonic worship in diametric opposition to the worship of the Heavenly Father Yahweh. Yahweh minces no words about it. He told Israel through Moses, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" (Ex. 22:18). He says in Deuteronomy 18:10, "There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch." Cats have been closely associated with mystery religion from the Egyptians to the Norse. But the Celts had a particular fear of cats, believing they were humans who had been changed into feline form by evil powers. The black cat particularly was connected to demonic powers. Black cats are the chief idol of the goddess of Wicca, Diana. In legend, she turns into a black cat to commit incest with her brother, Lucifer. Eventually the Druids themselves came to be regarded as witches. Witch hunting during Halloween became almost a national pastime in the colonial years of our nation. But that was yesterday. Halloween is regarded as the high "Sabbath" for practicing witches today. Orange, black, and red, the devil's colors are the colors associated with Halloween. Black prefigures black magic and demonic influence. The black of night is when these forces of evil are busiest, using the cover of darkness for their sinister works.

Skulls and Skeletons The skeleton is a form of the god of the dead, the witches' "horned god." The Dictionary of Satanism by Wade Baskin says this about skulls and skeletons under "skull worship": "Skulls play an important role as sacred relics and as objects of worship among primitives. Among Polynesians and Melanesian, skulls of ancestors are worshiped in order to establish connections with the spirits of the dead. Like the head of Osiris in Egypt, the skulls of ancestors may also serve as tutelary deities. The head or its parts, each of which may stand for the whole, can be used as magical food or as a means of increasing the fertility of the soil." Under "Skull," the Dictionary of Lore and Legend says, "Symbol of death, often with crossed bones beneath." Fire Rites Being that Halloween is a Celtic new year's festival, many of its surviving rituals trace to the Celtic feast. The fire rite was practiced in many areas around the world on the night before the New Year. The old fire was allowed to go out and a new one was kindled—usually a sacred fire from which the fires of the village were relight. The fires were thought to rejuvenate the waning sun and aid in banishing evil spirits. The Druids built hilltop fires to celebrate important festivals. Ghosts and witches feared fire, it was thought, and so fire became the best weapon against evil spirits. Witchcraft was punished by burning at the stake, fire being used as means purification. The light that fires gave off was a sign of sacredness. Apple Bobbing Popular at Halloween parties is apple bobbing. It was a means of divination among the Druids and survives in cultures influenced by the Celts. Because the apple is also a common love charm, the practice of ducking for apples seems to have been associated with the selection of a lover. Apple bobbing was originally a fertility rite deriving from the Christmas observance, which was replete with various fertility rites. Is Halloween a TRICK or TREAT? Most absolutely a TRICK. As you can see from all the above the real meaning of Halloween has been watered down. It is Satan's objective to get all to worship him. God tells us to not have any thing to do with this. Peter I 5:8 be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some

one to devour. 1Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. 1Timothy 4:1 now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons.

Haunted Places People have reported seeing ghosts in New York City for hundreds of years. These famous locations in New York City are purported to be haunted -- while you may not see a ghost in any of New York City's haunted spots, some of the stories that explain the haunting are just as scary. New York Algonquin Hotel 59 W 44th St Many guests at the Algonquin Hotel have claimed to spot members of The Round Table, a group of writers that met at the Algonquin for lunch daily after World War I. Members of The Round Table (who called themselves the Vicious Circle) include Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Franklin Pierce, Robert

Sherwood, Harpo Marx, Alexander Woollcott, Herold Ross, George S. Kaufman, Heywood Broun, Marc Connelly and Edna Ferber. Bridge Cafe 279 Water St The building dates back to 1794, but the Bridge Cafe's life as a drinking establishment first began in 1847 when it was opened as a porter house, making it New York City's oldest bar. Just under the Brooklyn Bridge, rumors of ghosts of the pirates who frequented the bar continue. Belasco Theatre 111 West 44th Street Numerous accounts of haunting at one of New York City's oldest theaters including sightings of the building's builder and namesake, David Belasco, who lived in an apartment at the top of the theater before his death in 1931. His ghost is said to interact with actors, offering kudos and handshakes, and many have reported hearing footsteps and the disconnected elevator running. Sightings of the Blue Lady, possibly Belasco's companion, have been reported numerous times. Beth Israel Hospital First Ave. at 16th St. Many people have reported hearing unexplained footsteps, noises, and voices throughout the hospital.

Brittany Hotel 55 East 10th Street Now an NYU dorm, mysterious music, lights and footsteps have been reported. People have also claimed to feel like someone is "watching them".

Chumley's 86 Bedford St This West Village speakeasy claims to be visited by former bar mistress and owner, Henrietta Chumley, who comes to drink a Manhattan. The former owner also makes her presence known by messing with the restaurant's jukebox. The Dakota Central Park West at 72nd St. In the sixties, the ghost of a young boy/young man was seen by a couple of construction workers at The Dakota. A girl dressed in turn-of-the-century clothing was seen by painters working at the building several years later. John Lennon, who was murdered outside the Dakota in 1980, is also rumored to haunt the area around the undertaker’s gate. To add to the eeriness, the building was also the setting for Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. Ear Inn 326 Spring St Haunted by Mickey, who was killed when he was hit by a car in front of the Inn, a sailor who lived in the Ear Inn when it was a boarding house.

Empire State Building 350 Fifth Avenue various sightings have been reported of suicide victims who jumped from the Empire State Building's observatory. Landmark Tavern 626 11th Ave (46th St) Opening in 1868, waiters at the Landmark Tavern believe the restaurant is haunted by an Irish girl and a Confederate soldier. Manhattan Bistro 129 Spring Street This SoHo building is haunted by a young woman, Elma Sands, who was murdered in December 1799 and dropped in a well which is now in the restaurant's basement. Sands alleged murderer, Levi Weeks, was never convicted despite strong evidence. Evidence of the ghost's presence includes ashtrays knocked off tables, plates being broken on the floor, and bottles flying off shelves. Morris-Jumel Mansion 65 Jumel Terrace (between West 160th and 162nd Streets) Built in 1765 as a summer home for British Colonel Roger Morris and his wife, the Morris-Jumel Mansion is the oldest remaining house in Manhattan. Several ghosts are reputed to haunt the mansion: Eliza Jumel, former mistress of the mansion, has been seen wandering the house in a purple dress, rapping on walls and windows; the ghost of a young servant girl who committed suicide by jumping out a window has been seen in the mansion's servants quarters; and a soldier from the American Revolution, who's picture hangs on a wall in the mansion, has also been seen.

Salem, Massachusetts (Essex County) Known for the notorious witch trials of 1692, Salem is visible like the ghosts who reside there in the quiet places throughout the town. Definitely, you should visit Nathaniel Hawthorn's birthplace, the House of the Seven Gables. The public is allowed to explore the house Hawthorn lived in, and there is also a haunted inn once owned by a woman who was accused of being a witch. Danvers, Massachusetts (Essex County) Danvers was known as Salem Village and was home to many of the accused witches who stood trial in Salem. It is also the home of former Danvers State Hospital. Like most of its kind, Danvers State Hospital was a place for lost souls. It was a progressive institution for its time, but deteriorated from overcrowding in the '30s and '40s. Documented activity includes cold spots, the sound of cries, voices and various ghosts of former patients.

Lizzie Borden's House (92 Second Street, Fall River, Massachusetts) Now known as the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast, you can rent and sleep in the rooms where Lizzie and the rest of the family slept. The debate rages on as to whom committed the infamous murders, but most agrees this is still an active location. People have reported seeing a mist-like human figure form above a couch in the area where Andrew Borden took the last nap of his life. Apparitions of Abby Borden and Lizzie have reportedly appeared in the basement and bedrooms in front of startled guests and staff. The Houghton Mansion (172 Church Street, North Adams, Massachusetts) The story at this haunted location is about a 1914 car accident, the death of a beloved daughter and that of a devoted father a few days later. Add the tragic suicide of the chauffeur, and you have the sordid tale of the Houghton Mansion. The mansion was the home of wealthy businessperson, Albert Houghton. A pleasure drive resulted in an accident that killed his adult (and youngest) daughter and caused Albert to die a few days later, reportedly of a broken heart. Family servant John Widders was at the wheel and committed suicide later by hanging himself. Today the three-story mansion is home to the Masons and also serves as the base for the Berkshire Paranormal Group. Activity includes doors opening on their own accord, audible footsteps, overwhelming feelings of sadness and anger, cold spots and EVPs. The Hoosac Tunnel (North Adams, Massachusetts) The name 'Hoosac' means 'forbidden' in Native American. This tunnel was the first tunnel of the time to be built using nitroglycerin. Subsequent accidents, deaths, cave ins and fires earned the location its nickname, 'The Bloody Pit'. Over two hundred men died during its construction, and sighs, apparitions, strange lights, sounds and voices have been seen and heard from the 1800s to this day. Be careful - this is still an operating railroad line and tunnel. Saint Thecla Retreat House, Dudley Road (77 Dudley Rd., Billerica, Massachusetts) The Retreat House is the private property of the Daughters of St. Paul Convent. Dudley Road in front of the house is a public road and has seen its share of ghostly nuns, strange lights and sounds. It remains a perfect spot for EVP, digital recorder and camera work. Beckett Land Trust/Historic Quarry (Becket, Massachusetts) The Beckett Land Trust was a stone quarry from the 1850s through the 1960s. To this day, it looks as though the workers put down their tools and just walked away. There is a reason to be cautious around the abandoned machines and piles of stone. The sounds of working machinery can be heard as well as disembodied voices, and there are cold spots.

Texas Dallas – Lawrence Hotel – opened in October 1925–crying and shadows on 10th fl. allegedly woman jumped or fell from presidential suite back in the 40's–often heard voices and footsteps and many cold spots—high heeled footsteps back and forth across the lobby between midnight and 6am—gentleman gambler on 2nd level where there used to be an illegal casino during the late 20'-30's–lots of movement in the basement areas too. – March 2007 Update/ Correction: There are other Internet rumors that the illegal gambling casino was in the basement. This is not accurate. The casino was in fact on the second floor. However, laundry carts have been reported by the staff to move on their own in the basement. The front desk will often get calls from (3) rooms in the hotel on a regular basis that no one has

checked into. The 10th floor has one room in particular (room #1009) where the staff say when they try to open the door to the room they get resistance on the other side as if someone doesn’t want you to come in. Lots of activity has been captured in this room. A congressman also lived in the hotel at one time who also killed himself at the hotel. He lived on the 10th floor. Female voices are heard in the hall. Dallas – LBJ House – Supposedly there is supposed to be blood on the walls and some areas of the house where the wife and children were sacrificed and there is a really cold feeling if you stand in a certain place, but I’ve never talked to anyone who has seen that personally. Dallas – Millermore – A two story Greek revival home completed in 1861, is currently the center piece of Old City Park Museum. The activity seems to center around the former nursery and master bedroom on the second floor. Dallas – Millermore Mansion at Old City Park Museum – This 1860's mansion was the home of the same Dallas family for over 100 years before becoming part of the museum. Consistent stories are told of a ghostly female presence in the second floor area around the former nursery. Visitors, docents, and staff have all felt the presence over the last 25 years. Dallas – Oak Cliff – Combs Creek St – This is about a little girl in a bike that haunts a street called Combs Creek by the railroad tracks. Dallas – Old Parkland – January 2007 Update Additional information: Removed – Private property Due to the heavy demolition and safety concerns, the property owners have been overloaded with inquiries about paranormal investigations before the changes are made. The new management does not want the publicity or rumors to be out there that their property is haunted. Many trespassers have already been prosecuted. Dallas – Pleasant Grove Christian Church – Reports of seeing Children who run by and disappear. Banging and howling noises from all over the grounds. One witness has taken pictures with a digital camera at this site and obtained pictures of floating orbs, a child’s face in what was an empty hallway, and what appears to be an adult hand holding an axe. The children spirits are not too intense but the adult spirit seems very angry and seems to want to be left alone. Rumor of the adult possibly murdering the child. The tower was the hanging room, were they would hang the convicted prisoners that were sentenced to death. It is recorded that only one man was executed in the tower, however, some people claim that more than one was executed. You can feel a cold spot in the tower. Some claim that the rope that is still hanging there swings back and forth. Shadows of a man hanging have been seen by some and many people who have passed by the building at night claim to hear voices, sounds, and wails coming from the original part of the building where the tower stands. Closets in the home would have auras of foreboding, as if some one was staring at you as you passed. One homeowner shot a trespassing dog at night only to find that it vanished before his eyes at point blank range. As children walk from one home to another, they would here additional footsteps along side. During a family get together several family members slept out in the back yard under a night-light placed in the yard,

during the night they awoke to see a hat that belonging to the owner of the house rise from the table, lift about 6 feet in the air, go toward the back door. Once there the screen door opened and the hat proceeded inward after a brief pause. The screen door shut after the hat entered. All of this time there was no wind, and it was all done in silence. Many people have lost their lives in the treacherous Slippery Rock Creek, which is more of a river in the surrounding area. Numerous adventurous young people have drowned in waters. The most famous ghost story associated with the prison is the hand print left in a cell by a man wrongfully accused of being a member of the Molly Maguires. The Molly Maguires were a group of disgruntled miners in the 1870's that used violence as a means to bring about change in the corrupt mining industry. Several men were accused, arrested, and eventually hanged at the prison for being Molly Maguires. On the eve of his execution, a man who proclaimed his innocence ran his hand along the dirty floor of his cell and made an impression of his hand on the wall, claiming the impression would always remain as proof of his innocence. The next day, he was hung and the hand print was washed away. Three days later, the print reappeared. As legend has it, the wall has been repeatedly washed and painted, but the hand print always returns. The wall was supposedly even ripped down and re-plastered, but the hand print returned yet again. Also, just to let you know, I am a native Pittsburgher and the story that you have posted about the Green Man is not accurate. Story has it that he was an electrician who was working on a power line during a bad storm and was struck by lighting. It is said that he did not die due to his injuries but that the heat from the lightning bolt melted his facial features and he appeared to have a green glow about himself. He is a well-known urban legend in the Pittsburgh area. Drexel Hill - Archbishop Prendergast High School - Originally the old Drexel Estate and Then later before the school an orphanage- there are 2 tales here. The 1st is the story of an orphan that was murdered by another. On the second floor of the school there are still 2 halls left with the original bedrooms- still not converted to classrooms. The halls are on the same floor as the chapel. Students have claimed to see furniture move in those rooms. There is 1 old rocking horse in particular that will ALWAYS MOVE ON ITS OWN when the room is occupied for too long. Because of the hostile vibe felt in that room, people believe that is the spirit of the murdering orphan, who also died there due to a "freak" accident. There are also reports of students seeing two children late at night, running, fighting, and screaming through those halls. The 2nd story is the tale of a nun who taught at the orphanage. She hung herself in the bell tower and haunts it to this day. Many times the bell will ring unexpectedly and late at night a light will go on and off. Unlike the modern light that is suppose to be up there (which seems to always mysteriously short out), it looks like a candle. Students who have tried to get up there have been spooked severely. The school has had the bell tower sealed off for years. Some students have reported coming back from school dances and looking up to see the nun looking at them from the bell tower. Drexel Hill - Garretford Elementary School - Now, next to the school there is a WAWA. Many, many years ago, long before the school was ever built, the grounds were a holding house for prisoners. No matter what time of day it is you can feel them there, but they don’t act until someone is there by themselves during the night. Elizabeth - St. Michael's Church - In the early 1980's the diocese of Pittsburgh ordered the church padlocked at 3:00 AM without any warning to the parishioners. The only explanation the diocese would give is that the floor of the 125 year old church was too weak and in danger of collapse. Since that time strange changes to the church have taken place. While the rest of the colored panes of glass in the windows have retained their color the faces of the saints have turned black. Inside the church the walls have peeled and cracked, the pews are filthy with bird droppings and dead birds, yet the area around the altar and the altar itself, which is draped a 100 year old altar cloth from Ireland, is in pristine condition.

In the main bar room there were voices from nowhere and they report it felt as though people surrounded them. On the second floor and the attic it is deserted of any furniture except one room where there is this old bed spring, a 1920's era toilet and a shower head. Hollywood - The Comedy Store - Was once a famous nightclub and restaurant in the 30's/40's and the basement is said to be haunted with an evil entity. Sunnyvale - Toys R Us - Toys R Us is haunted supposedly by a young boy or man. Sylvia Brown appeared on National television and did a "walk through" at this "haunted Toys R Us." Apparently the

activity is just as strong today as always, and employees can attest to finding toys in aisles when opening up the store in the morning, and balls rolling down aisles when nobody else is around. There also have been pictures taken of this ghost. Geyserville - Warm Springs Fish Hatchery - It was supposedly built on Native American burial grounds. The main building was haunted by a ghost (woman) who called the employees names and changed the radio station. There were also four houses there which each had their own encounters with ghosts. The shower came on all time’s day or night in one house and it happened to more than one resident of the house. One of the other houses reportedly had a spirit of a child that climbed in the bed with you. Some visitors to the hatchery claimed to have seen an elderly Indian couple roaming the grounds. I had a number of my own experiences to it was pretty wild. Hollywood - Roosevelt Hotel - A stop at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is a must, as at least two famous, and several not so famous ghosts reside there. The hotel's most famous haunting concerns a mirror which sits outside the elevators on the hotel's lower level. Hundreds of tourists pass the full length mirror each day without knowing its strange history. The mirror originally was part of the furnishings in a room which was frequently used by Marilyn Monroe. Several people have reported seeing the tragic actress' image reflected in the glass of this particular mirror. Upon turning around, of course, no one was there. San Jose - Chuck-e-Cheese - haunted by a little girl on the third floor. Santa Clara The ghost of a ten year old boy who was killed on an amusement park ride haunts the area where the ride once stood. Hollywood - Wattles Mansion - There used to be a bus stop right in front of the property, but it had to be moved because there were too many complaints of screaming, and mysterious sounds of horses galloping and whinnying all night long. People grew too afraid to wait for the bus and the city finally complied and moved it down the block. An apparition of a woman has also been seen on the grounds at night by neighbors. Sunnyvale - Homestead High School - is said to have a ghost walking the halls on the second floor. I've heard stories from many people including a teacher who worked there. Usually the spirit is only seen at night. It's been known to lock doors, open doors and its presence can be felt. People have also said that they've seen it, and one teacher claims that the ghost tapped him on his shoulder.

Thousand Oaks - The Stagecoach Inn - It is supposedly haunted by a man that was murdered there and also by a woman. Perfume can be smelled in parts of the Inn (which is now a museum open to the public) and people have reported seeing "a tall stranger" in the corner of their eyes, but turn around to see no one. Long Beach - The Queen Mary - It is said that a male ghost has been seen in the engine room where he was killed while the ship was still in service, there have also been reports of the sound of children playing in the pool. The most accessible haunted area is near door 13 in the engine room, where a young man was crushed trying to escape a fire. He was only 17 and had lied about his age in order to get the job. Another of the accessible haunting areas is the front desk of what is now the hotel portion

of the ship. Sightings include a mysterious woman in white who will be sighted walking until blocked from view by a pillar and never coming out from behind. Also, a couple has been seen walking down the hall to either side of the main entry to the first class rooms, but are never seen in the hallways themselves Hollywood, CA and the San Fernando Valley. According to the reports, on several occasions at the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Lookout Mountain Dr. almost on the exact moment of midnight people have witnessed an old carriage pulled by white horses that seems to dart out onto the canyon road from Lookout Mountain as though the horses are at a full speed gallop. The carriage disappears into the same nothingness from whence it came leaving even car accidents in its wake. Just down the road from this intersection lays the burned out ruins of what was Houdini's mansion. This entire area is surrounded with stories of hauntings and ghosts. It is a beautiful canyon drive with shade trees drooping over the road almost the entire way and it is filled with old mansions from Hollywood's early days. The old home of Tom Mix is there too.

Disneyland - The ghost of a woman named Dolly haunts the Matterhorn Mountain where she was crushed to death after she fell out of her sled and was hit by the sled behind her. There is a ghost of a young man haunting the old People Mover ride. When it was operating, girls (especially those with long blonde hair) would sometimes feel an unseen someone pull visiously at their hair. The boy died a few years ago on a Grad Night when he jumped out of the cabin of the PeopleMover, tripped, got caught and dragged underneath the car. He grabbed desperately at his girlfriends long blond hair to save himself, but to no avail. The ghost(s) of one or two people have been seen on Tom Sawyers Island. At least three boys (all Grad night victims) have drowned in the Rivers of America. The "it's a small world" ride has three different ghosts. They are all people who worked there and they loved this attraction. Lights have turned themselves off/on by themselves, as well as the all the dolls moving without power. San Francisco - Alcatraz - is said to be haunted by the ghosts of many, many prisoners who died there, including the Bird Man, "Machine Gun" Kelly and Al Capone. Voices in the former eating area as well as the cell blocks are heard when no one else is around. Footsteps and the sounds of cell doors opening and closing also echo throughout the corridors. People have reported feeling "cold spots" in certain areas and the feeling that they are not alone, even when they are.

Bakersfield - Bakersfield High School - One area of the bleachers at the BHS football area is haunted by a young couple, they look to be 16 to 18 years old. The girl is wearing a prom dress and the guy is wearing a football jacket with "BHS" embroidered on the back. The area where they are seen has a strange chill to it, and one gets a strange feeling of being watched. Where they are seen is up near the top of the bleachers. The couple has yet to be identified, and no one knows how they got there. They are usually seen during big games, either sitting there watching the game contently or making out (as a couple would most likely do). Bakersfield - Graces Circle - One of the only circles in California, Graces Circle has a large stone

statue of Father Graces, a missionary who was in the area a few hundred years ago. People have reported that right before a major car accident at the circle (there's been quite a few) people can either see the hands of the statue moving or they hear him muttering in prayer for them. Bakersfield - Melodrama Theater - This rather popular theater is an old building, built quite a while ago. Before it became the theater it was a big toy store. The theater is said to be haunted by an employee who worked at the toy store who hung himself in the attic. Unexplainable things happen at the Melodrama where the attic used to be (the attic was removed and replaced with all the things a theater needs). Also, the women's dressing room seems to have strange occurrences: the sequin dresses on the clothes racks "rattle" on their own violation, and shadows can be seen where no one is standing. Ventura - The Santa Clara House -This restaurant, once a private Victorian home, is residence to a ghost of a young girl who killed herself after she had an affair with a salesman and got pregnant. She was married and didn't want to tell her husband but when she did, he left her. After that, she waited for the return of the salesman even though he never returned. She, in despair, hung herself in the attic. Now it is said that you can see her apparition looking out the window waiting for her lover to return for her. Banta (Tracy) - The Banta Inn - Haunted by the former owner who died of a heart attack behind the bar in 1967. He likes to knock things off walls, stack the coins inside the cash register, open and close doors. The Banta Inn has appeared on the TV show "Sightings". Modesto - Modesto High School - The spirit of a young man paces the balcony of the Modesto High Auditorium. Supposedly quite a few years ago, a young man had fallen from the balcony railing to the carpet-covered cement ramp below and was killed. There are also reports of knocking noises heard in the main hallway---where the floor slopes by the sewing room---that are coming from the tunnels that used to run under the school. Wilmington - Banning Residence Museum - Generals of the Civil War are seen in one room planning a strategic attack of some kind and several people that once lived their are also seen. Santa Paula - The Glen Tavern Inn - There is a young boy who died there and is seen playing on the second floor and in the lobby. Also, the piano that is in the lobby plays by itself. There have been sightings of a person or apparition looking out of the window of Room 23. Fairfax - Camp Bothin - It used to be an Indian reservation, then early in the 1920s became a hospital for tuberculosis patients. Now it is used as a Girl Scout camp, but it still has the original sinks from the hospital. You can hear a ghost of a nurse pushing her cart up and down the halls, moaning, screaming, appearances and disappearances and some ancient Indians spirits too. Boulder Creek - Brookdale Lodge - A girl in a formal dress runs across the lobby then disappears into thin air. In an empty Mermaid Room, voices and music are softly heard. Hidden rooms and secret passages are mysterious vestiges of Brookdale Lodge's rich past. Sutter Creek - The Sutter Creek Inn - is haunted by a former California senator and his wife. The Senator is heard pacing upstairs in the main house and his wife is sometimes seen in the hall way. Huntington Park - St. Mathias Mission House - it use to be the home of an elderly couple who also died in here many years ago. Many people have seen an old person at the mirror in where their living

room use to be. A lot of people including myself have herd footsteps ,weird moans and sounds, things fall and lights turn on and off when no one is in the room. Hollywood - Vogue Theater - Built in 1935 and opened as an 800 seat movie theatre in 1936. Nine entities have been documented since August of 1997. Six children, an adult female and two adult males. Entities are extremely active and communicative. Los Angelo’s - Knott's Berry Farm - Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant a ghost in one of the empty, windowless back dining rooms. Looked like an old woman and the busboy claimed it was simply a fog. Yucaipa - Pendleton Rd. - Is haunted by a woman who died of a car accident there in the 1950`s.It is said she crawled out of the car to get out and get help, police found her 1/2 a mile away dead in the street. She is also known as the red lady of Pendleton Rd. Palmdale - Haunted Ponds - There's a place next to the California Aqueduct and 40th & 30th street East where a house used to be, around 40 years ago. Legend has it that the woman that lived in the house was hung on a tree branch over a pond on the property by her jealous husband. It is said that on clear nights when the moon is bright you can see her hang from the tree & hear the sound of a woman weeping. Sanger - Centerville - Snake Road - The Street is called Channel, the twisting curves in the road have caused it to become known as "Snake Road." On top of that, it is close to a fast flowing river, Kings River. Apparently, many years ago, a woman was driving down Snake Road with her two daughters when she lost control of her car and drove off the road crashing into the river. Trapped inside the car, she drowned. The two girls were tossed from the car and went down the river with the strong current. Not strong enough to swim to safety, they also drowned. But, they drowned several miles down the river. Therefore, every night, the mother's ghost can, on occasion, be seen walking along Snake Road, searching for her daughters. ! Even calling out to them. Columbia - Fallon House Theater & Hotel - Years and years ago it burned down. They rebuilt it into replica of the old one. Now there have been many reports of noises, voices, overwhelming stench of smoke, in one room you can smell whiskey, and in room 9 and 13 a female ghost is seen quite often. In the theater lights go on and off, and shadows of people are seen. Pasadena - The Pasadena Playhouse - Once a school of theater arts and now a state historic landmark theater, is said to be haunted by the spirit of its founder, Gilmore Brown. The elevator mysteriously stopped and started, and often stopped for no reason on the floor of Mr. Brown's offices. Hear a distinct male voice saying "hello," but there is no one in the room. Mokelumne Hill - Hotel Leger - Hotel owned by George Leger in 1880, He met an untimely death, shot in gambling argument. Anyway odor of fresh cigar smoke is still smelled in his upstairs room. The student had died in the 50's and continues to be heard and seen by faculty and students alike

South Pasadena - The Rialto Theater - The Rialto Theater is VERY old, I think 70 years old. Many people have died there. In the bathroom a girl slit her wrists and climbed up to the balcony and bled to death in the seats. It is also said that a man went crazy in the projector booth. The doors to the stalls in the girl’s bathroom shake. An apparition of an Older man has been seen sitting in the seats. The older man has also been seen walking up and down the balcony stairs. Palos Verdes Est. - Rocky Point - (3 miles S. of Redondo Beach.) Apparitions of dead skin divers, odd traveling lights, voices. Pasadena - The Historic State Landmark Theater - Was once a College of the Performing Arts, and it has been reputedly haunted by the benevolent spirit of its founder, Gilmore Brown. Long after his death, and when the college was still operating; the elevator in the classroom tower building would often stop without command on the floor where Mr. Brown's office was located. Many actors and technicians have felt a spirit watching the proceedings and one evening. Moss Beach - The Moss Beach Distillery - Unusually shaped building is the current home of the "Blue Lady". Building used to be a speak- easy during the prohibition. A woman who worked at the establishment was married to a seaman, but had an affair with a piano player. When the husband returned from Alaska and found out, he then murdered her on the beach below. The Blue Lady is a friendly and mischievous spirit. Hollywood - Hollywood sign and Griffith observatory - Two people have committed suicide of the Hollywood sign and there have been many sightings of weird looking figures and lights by the sign late at night. From the Griffith observatory, you can see the sign very well and employees there have reported sightings of ghosts by the sign. Gilroy - hwy 152(blood alley) - There have been numerous sightings of a woman searching for her child, hearing the sound of a stage coach and the snorting and breathing of horses, and a rumor that a woman was killed by a truck driver and she appears in the passenger seat of the truck, screams" and then vanishes. Grass Valley - North Star Mine Lodge - Was converted into a Christian boarding school in the 1960's. It was shut down in the mid 80's. Doors opened and closed by themselves drastic temperature changes pictures flew off walls windows opening and shutting these events were witnessed by quite a few of the other students often by groups of us at one time the temperature changes and things flying off the walls seem to occur at the same time.

San Francisco - Golden Gate Park - There's a police officer ghost that roams Golden Gate Park. People will get pulled over and get speeding tickets by this guy, but when they go to file it through the courts they'll find out that the officer listed doesn't exist. He's been dead for 10 years. Anyway, the story goes that if a cop in the park is trailing you, you need to go outside of the park first before you pull over. And once you do, the ghost cop will disappear. San Juan Capistrano-San Juan Capistrano Mission There was once this Indian girl that lived on the outskirts of the mission. She saw invaders coming to destroy the mission and she ran really hard to warn the people there, she ran so hard, that by the time that she got there and told the proper

authorities, she died of exhaustion. The girl is seen by some at her memorial. They have also spotted shadows of people and heard children crying in the cemetery where a surprisingly large number of people were buried in a surprisingly small space. (1600 people in a cemetery about the size of an Olympic pool.)
