THE REAL REASON WHY TEENS HAVE MENTAL ISSUES by Sofia Montero It’s very common for people to experience mood swings during their teen years. Now more than ever, teenagers are suffering from different mental issues, which can affect their relationships, mood, academic performance, etc. There’s different speculations about the reason why this is happening way more than before, some parents blame social media, some people say it’s normal and that it will eventually go away and some others don’t even believe teenager’s issues are real. So what is the real reason behind this issue? As a teenager, I know many people my age that suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, or even depression. At this age there’s a lot of pressure coming from different places all at the same time; school, family, friends, social media, hobbies, etc. All this can lead to self-harm, being antisocial, poor hygiene, low energy, poor health, ruin personal relationships or even suicide. Most teens are too scared to speak up or do something about it, from fear of being shut down, ignored or made fun of. I will be discussing the different factors that affect a teenagers mind, all answers were from actual teenagers who have experienced mental issues. School is one of the main reasons teenagers get anxiety, with effects like something as little as procrastinating to fainting due to heavy breathing. The life of a teenager usually revolves around school and their academic performance. They get lots of work with little time which becomes overwhelming to the point that they procrastinate due to anxiety. Besides this, students are expected to find a balance between school, rest, social life and extracurricular activities. The guilt they feel from not completing this expectations becomes so strong over the years, which takes us to our next factor.   Family and friends is probably the biggest factor in teens ‘depression and anxiety. It’s just constant fear, no matter the relationships condition, they are always in fear. Fear can come in many ways, if you have a good relationship with a parent or a friend, you fear being betrayed or abandoned, if you have a bad relationship with a friend, you fear them still being with you due to pity, if you have a bad relationship with your family, you fear being judged, etc. When it comes to relationships teen always fear being betrayed, most of them have lost trust due to their friendships and little things parents do. Parents tend to belittle teens problems and few offer actual help. Teens tend to look for their friends for help, they text or call each other to vent or talk about their problems, the fear increases when parents are strict and constantly check their social media. The lack of privacy these kids get makes them fear talking to their friends and trusting their parents becomes very hard. They have no feeling of privacy or intimacy outside their family, this can cause the teen to become depressed or anxious about what he says and does around their mutuals.   I think family I the one that affects all the other factors the most due to parents high expectations and constant pressure to improve. Are parents the one to blame for their kids mental issues? As said before, most parents blame social media for teen’s mental issues, this is usually wrong. Most teens find social media as an escape from their reality or just a way to connect with their friends. Parents are not completely wrong, unrealistic expectations on looks or cyberbullying can affect some teens too, but it’s minimum.  To conclude, there are many factors that affect teens and they all are attached to each other, one affects the other and vice versa. Mental issues shouldn’t be belittled, no matter the age or the reason.  Contact me through my email to continue the discussion: sofiamg1025gmail.com

KINETIC LUNGS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT IN MEXICALI: “FROM THE MOST POLLUTED AIR ON MEXICO TO THE CLEANEST AIR ON THE COUNTRY” Written by Citlali Capiz

Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico is known as one of the most polluted cities on Earth and in the air its citizens breath, there are solid micro fragments from dust, ash, soot, metal particles, cement or pollen that are dispersed in the atmosphere because of the desertic weather.

Check pollution levels on Mexicali. Purple Air

As these particles may cause health problems in heart and lungs, Víctor Celorio, as head of the civil organization “Pulmón Urbano”, developed kinetic lungs in order to clean up the air from different parts from the city, and in collaboration with CETYS Universidad, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, Instituto Tecnológico de Mexicali, San Francisco de Asis Temple and 300 Mexicali volunteers, in June 14th, a the kinetic lungs net began functioning. The lungs where set in June and they follow a daily pattern in which they turn on in the morning and turn off at night so the levels stay in a balanced loop in which the micro fragments can appear gradually and get cleaned up in the morning. It can clean up to three million cubic meters of air per day and, after two weeks of usage, the polluting agent levels dispersed in the air nearby one of these kinetic lungs decreased 15.11%. The pollution levels data in real time are available in Purple Air. This technology was set on important places from Mexicali such as institutions like CETYS Universidad, Instituto Tecnológico de Mexicali, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, or elementary schools. However, it is also possible for citizens to order a kinetic lung at “Pulmón Urbano´s web page, where data about the air pollution in Mexicali is presented, also information about why is important to maintain a clear air inside of buildings and houses.

Do you remember? Article by Citlali Capiz

About sixteen years ago most of us were born. The early years of 2000 were fast in the development of technology and, as we were being raised while this evolution was taking place, we got to interact with a lot of programs, games, and even different sizes of computers and televisions throughout our early life.

Personally, I still remember one specific game in my parents’ computers, “Purble Place”, a game which consisted on a little village where you could play three different minigames in dissimilar places, for example a memory game where the school was, recreate a cake in the bakery or trying to guess a character where the ophthalmologist was placed. Purble place was a game most of us played when we did not know how to use internet or when we did not have because it was already installed in computers with Windows 7 among with other videogames such as solitaire, mahjong, minesweeper, and some more. Even though these games were implemented by Microsoft in 2007 and basically disappeared from our lives when Windows 8 was launched in 2012, it performed an important roll for us because it took a great part from our entertainment. As we were not that little to break the computer in any way and the game have an adorable and friendly image, our parents used to let us play with it. As it was safe and it did not have a cost, it was easy for the whole family let their children play with “Purble Place”. Also, we were just enjoying our childhood, we did not even care if there were just three different mini games, we all made good memories from “Purble Place” by recreating the design of cakes, trying to guess how a hidden character looked or by just playing a memory game. pg.11

Perhaps the success behind this software directed to kids and young people in general was its colorful and friendly image it had. Round shapes and soft colors were the ones that we got to see once we ran the program on the computer. However, as they were simple and easy games to play, it made little ones feel apt and good because they were able to play it and get to win without any help. However, as everything does, “Purble Place” had an end. In 2012, Windows 8 was launched, and every game was removed from computers with this operative system. I bet none of us even noticed because we grew up, met new games that were way more complex, for example Club Penguin. This new game could be described as the first multiplayer game that we all played. It consisted on an online game in which every avatar was a penguin, but you could change the color of it to make it yours. The game had way more minigames than “Purble Place” and, as we could interact with other people through the game, we could make friends or talk, however we all had to be careful because the algorithm could kick you out the server. Club Penguin also had characters from the game such as a DJ, a Sensei, a Scientific or even a band, which guided you through minigames like a ninja fight with funny cards, music minigames or even missions. As the Club Penguin world was bigger it had more opportunities for the players to enjoy different activities, like decorating your own house, preparing pizzas or even adopting round and colorful fluffy pets called Puffles. None the less, one of the bad things about Club Penguin was that, in order to get more and different “puffles”, clothing for your penguin or even making your house bigger you got to pay real money, so most of us had to make friend with memberships in order to see their cool houses, pets and objects. Sadly, as “Purble place” did, Club Penguin had an end in 2018, and many users went back to it in order to say goodbye to the online game that got a lot of our attention. pg.12

Interview

Academic tournaments by Citlali Capiz

As I have noticed that many students are getting involved or even are hesitant on joining one of these tournaments, we interviewed Luis Ivan Santillana Iribe, a graduated from CETYS high school that’s known for joining and representing Baja California at these events in national levels. He was born in January 16th, 2001 in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, so he is also a representation of the talent in the state; and, right now, he is studying a Physics Degree at Autonomous University of Baja California campus Ensenada. When was the first time you went to an academic tournament? In the first year of high school, I think it was when I first entered the "Spring Math" contest and the "Mexican history olympiad".

How do you get to know about these tournaments? Mainly by listening to older classmates also from teachers and seeing posters thrown out there at school.

To which tournaments have you gone? And when? Total participations that I have done in competitions of this type should be about 15, but the opportunities I have been able to reach a final stage, to the national stage‌ on 5 occasions. I participated in junior high and high school, but I say that mainly in the second year of high school it was the most productive.

pg.15

How does these competitions work locally and outside Baja California? Local: Some competitions have a kind of committee, organization, a group of people behind mainly composed of ex-participants and specialized teachers in the area or closely related areas, most are engineers or researchers and this group of people is responsible for organizing the various events that take place around the contest, from building exams, reviewing them, putting together the calls, inviting schools, etc. and even accompany the researchers to the final stages most of the time and in case these committees at low level California, there is always one seat per municipality and they train the team that goes to the national. National: it is a fairly large mechanism of people and they often work in collaboration with some government agencies for the part of getting facilities, real estate and economic support and the last goal in the end is to train the team that represents Mexico, especially , help spread science and interest in it in the country. Which have been your highest achievements? I think that‌ well I would not know how to compare them, but I would definitely say that the bronze medal that I obtained in the Mathematics Olympiad was quite satisfactory because it was several years of getting there and even when the exam was difficult, I think it gave a good result, also in the history Olympiad, the final stage is an essay in which I have to do an investigation on the memory in my community and I spoke about the sinister so I am quite proud of that investigation that I did, also of the essay even when the jury such Once I consider it a bit traditional the subject that I treated or the way in which I treated it, but mainly of those two things I am quite proud because I feel that I really enjoyed doing that and I was satisfied with the result that I obtained.

pg.16

Although I also took many other things from the other Olympics, for example in the computer Olympiad I learned to program in several languages and various government techniques and above all, the experiences that one takes are also very important, even you learn What you doesn't like so much, for example, I realized that even though the organic chemistry in high school was easy for me, the organic chemistry beyond a classroom didn't get my attention so much and it got a little complicated. Did they represent a bonus for scholarship or other opportunities for university? Yes, because indirectly the part of the scholarships I believe because if it is true that it is a very good addition to the curriculum, more than anything it gives you a different perspective of many topics that you take during school, in the end you are getting more simple to manipulate this kind of information or more quickly maybe and in a university admission exam you can do much better than your classmates, in that sense it helped me ... I also received invitations from some universities to study careers in this case I had to be invited from the University of Guanajuato to study computer mathematics there. As I told you, many of the people who deal with these issues are teachers and many of them are here at the UABC science faculty so I get to know these researchers and that means that you already know where to go in case of any questions or what they do and how the environment works within the university

INTERVIEW WITH MIGUEL DE LEON

by Mía Dipp

Miguel de Leon is a business owner in Mexicali but he is well known for being the owner of Frutal, a local chain of food parlors that consists of both sweet and salty things. He installed some of those establishments throughout the city Mexicali but he's starting to scout for locations in Ensenada and Tijuana and, if all goes well, start branching nationwide. If you want tips on how to run a business, keep reading.

1

WHO ARE YOU AND HOW OLD ARE YOU?

Hi, my name is Miguel de Leon and I'm 37 years old.

2

WHAT DID YOU STUDY?

Miguel de Leon with his wife on a trip to Europe back in 2012.

Computer science and MBA in CETYS.

3

WHAT DID YOU WANT YOUR JOB TO BE ORIGINALLY?

5

Well, I studied computer science so I thought that I was always going to be working on anything related to IT and I imagined myself owning a company all the time because I like businesses since I was young. So I knew that I had to work for a big company first but I had the opportunity to run my own company since I was studying. I had a web posting company and I was my boss so pretty much I've always been my boss and I've always run my own companies.

4

WHAT WAS YOUR PREVIOUS JOB (BEFORE BUSINESS OWNER)?

DO YOU RUN ANY OTHER BUSINESS? I have a web developing company called Íconos, which is my main source of income and I also have a franchise called Frutal. We sell snacks and ice cream and all sorts of different kinds of snacks and beverages. I also have a new business called Workaholic and that's a co-working space that also hosts a restaurant and a bar. My wife runs a business called Lonche, which is like a deli and a cafe that we run inside universities and high schools.

6

Yeah, when I was in high school I worked in KFC. I was working there for a year and then I was working for another company that sells cellphones and pagers in 1996, so that was very new for everyone. While I was working there I had my first business, which was building computers and selling them. So I started back in high school and then I started to buy and sell used cars and I did that for 6 or 7 years and while I was doing that, I was studying university and running my business (Web Posting Company).

WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING ABOUT RUNNING A BUSINESS? You have a lot of responsibilities, especially with your employees and your tea. A lot of people think that once you own a business you're going to work less or you're going to have fewer responsibilities but it's the total opposite since you're responsible for yourself and what everyone else does. Like if an employee makes a mistake, it's always going to come out up to you and going to chase you like your biggest responsibilities is what they do. The hardest thing definite is responding to the actions and try to train them as well as you can so they don't make many mistakes and once they make a mistake, you have to respond to it.

PG. 18

7

IF YOU COULD RUN A BUSINESS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

11

Traveling. My wife and, I went to Belgium and we tasted the original Belgian waffles and we fell in love with them. So we started to try different recipes and equipment and that's our start. We wanted to have a famous dish for the winter and we got the ideas to make waffles ad then they stuck because clients wanted to have them all year long.

It would be in Europe because I like it so much. I lived in France for a year when I was eighteen so I fell in love with Europe and I think their culture is very rich and very different from ours. I would not like to do it in the states, probably Canada, but I would deteriorate more to Europe, specifically Norway or Finland.

8

WHAT'S PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

12

HOW LONG HAS FRUTAL BEEN A BUSINESS? For 25 years but here in Mexicali, it has been for 6 years. I partnered with the original owner and then we started to work here in Mexicali. We plan to expand all over Baja and Sonora and make it a franchise and go nationwide.

10

HOW WAS THE PROCESS OF CREATING THE RECIPE? It's the same for all the products we serve, we started with a dish to inspire us and then we start to look up recipes online, ask to people that may know about them, how to cook different dishes, we buy probably ten or twelve different samples, so we have a lot of testing. We also have our staff come together and taste the products to give their opinion and once we have the top three, we make a test for customers in the stores and we have them give us their opinion. After that process, which takes about a month or two, we come out with the final recipe and launch the product.

I would say the fact that I have many business, not only on what I studied, IT, but also in other fields. I was able to learn a lot in MBA, I was able to create many businesses that are not related to each other. Also being able to adapt to those different businesses has been my biggest accomplishment so far.

9

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR FAMOUS WAFFLES?

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO CREATE FRUTAL? Being able to create a space where families can meet and have a good time, that's what I like the most of that business. I could have run any restaurant or any other food service business but I chose Frutal because of their story and you can create a lot of jobs for young people. Most of our staff are kids between sixteen and twenty-four years old so they study and many can study because of their jobs in Frutal. It's very hard to maintain a staff that young because most of them are not mature enough or they have other priorities like school but at the same time you're able to change their lives because they have a job.

13

WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE WAFFLE? It's got Nutella, whipped cream strawberries and chocolate.

14

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE IN PLACING FRUTAL IN CETYS? Well, it's my school so I wanted to come back and make a statement on what ex-alumni can do. So we wanted to be close to the people in CETYS because when we established one of our first stores it was close to CETYS but people couldn't go out and buy because of the time or the rules in the stores so if they couldn't come out then we decided to come in.

15

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR FRUTAL? Like I mentioned before, we plan to expand all over Baja then go nationwide in like three of four years, start by opening a few more stores in Mexicali, then Ensenada and Tijuana and then in some cities in Sonora. The last step, up until now, is to go nationwide.

Make Chocolate Chip Cookies BY MĂ?A DIPP Chocolate chip cookies remind me of home, which is why I love them with all my heart. One bite into the softness and sweetness of the chocolate takes me back to my childhood days, when after a day of playing in the sun, my mother would give me a plate of cookies along with a cold glass of milk.

Making these cookies gave me a strong sense of nostalgia but I now know why my mother said that to achieve perfection, it takes practice. My first batch came out as various odd-shapes but none of the circles. My second batch did have the correct shape but they were too hard, as I had put too much flour in them. My third batch was a perfect and delicious result, the chocolate smooth and warm as the cookie had an exterior crunchy texture but the inside soft.

Little Women

By Mía Dipp

Little Womenis a coming-of-age novel published in 1868 by Louisa May Alcott, situated in Boston after the Civil War. This novel has been adapted several times into the screen since its release as directors and actors struggle to reflect the beauty of this story. Little Womenexplores timeless themes such as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal dreams and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America. This novel follows the story of the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy; who form part of a poor but loving family. The family struggles as the father is off to war serving as an army chaplain but their mother always encourages them to always be the best version of themselves. But each of them come across the conflict between following their desires or follow the etiquette that comes with being a woman.

Meg, the oldest, struggles with the family's limited resources since she's the most conscious about the spending within the family. She struggles to hide her envy of the wealthier girls in town since they have their healthy fathers and more than enough money to spare while her mother fears that their money will one day run out. So she devotes herself as a governess and to her family but has a conflict when her lover proposes to her in marriage, knowing that if she says yes that she'll have to devote herself to her own family now. Jo is the awkward, tomboyish sister who likes to write stories and plays as entertainment for her sisters. She feels envy of not being a man, or at least, not having the same liberty that a man does in tat century. Jo even says that she wishes that she were alongside her father on the battlefield so she could fight for her country and be assured that her father won't die in the war. Jo doesn't feel the need to behave like a lady, believing that she would rather be happy and seen as a mess than be proper and feel stuck in a cage. So she's made a decision to never marry and devote herself to her dream of publishing a novel but constantly has to battle and defend herself and her dreams against society's expectations of her lifestyle and how she should behave.

When I read this novel, I realized why it is considered a classic novel in literature. The first reviewers described the March women as fresh, healthy, natural and sincere; I can see why from their point in time as many novels didn't revolve around young girls and their conflicts, let alone the journey of seeing them turn into women. In the 1920s, Ernest Hemingway characterized Little Women as full of “sweetness and light.” Yet this novel also shows anger in a feminist way as Alcott uses characteristics in her writing to attract and repel readers. The home of the March women are comfortable and claustrophobic, the marriages show love but restraint, and the sisters' dreams are fulfilled but depressingly renounced.

It's not possible to read Little Womenwithout feeling emotions from the sentimental text about family and one's development. This novel shows the joys and troubles that come with a big family but makes you remember the bond you can only share with each other. PG. 22

BY MÍA DIPP This movie is based on the Marvel comics and has been called the 'Greatest Spiderman Movie of Them All'. For those of you who don't know, this movie starts with 13-year-old Brooklynite Miles Morales (Dope star Shameik Moore) being sent off to a fancy academy across town by his parents, African-American cop Jefferson Davis (Brian Tyree Henry) and Puerto Rican nurse Rio Morales (Lauren Velez). He's dealing with several problems; like a new school, new classmates and making some friends; but he faces his biggest problem when he gets bit by a radioactive spider while doing some graffiti with his uncle, Aaron Davis (Mahershala Ali), in an underground spot in the subway.

As if the transition of an awkward, hormonal kid into a superhero isn’t hard enough, a space-time portal is opened up by the mobster Kingpin (Liev Schreiber), which could destroy the world. But he's not alone as the portal also brings various Spider-people from different universes into Miles' world. There’s Peter Parker, Spider-man from his universe; Gwen Stacey, aka Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld); an anime heroine named Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn); a film noir Spider-Man (Nicolas Cage); and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). With each other, they can save this world and get back to their own lives by working as a team.

PG. 23

The animation of this movie, both hand-sketched and computer-created, is so breathtaking, they're turning heads with the brightly colored inventiveness and its kid-in-the-candy-store appetite for pop culture. Many fans have admired the diversity between the characters' clothes to their hair and the directors', (Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman), in their mission to leave no money unspent toward making this movie one of the best of the year through creative animation while still holding on to the traits that has defined Spider-Man for more than 50 years.

This movie is also applauded for the teaching moments that occur throughout the movie. While all the spider-people differ from their looks to their personality, they all share one vital thing in common: death. All of them have grieved a loved one but they point out how they still get ahead in life but not to ignore their feelings. One thing I admired about this movie is that even superheroes have their ups and downs: for Miles, it's the transaction into a new world that he's unprepared for while Peter Parker deals with depression when he lost the love of his life but keeps the mask on to do his job as Spider-Man. Also that you being a superhero can't limit you to have fun.

Finally, through its various spider-people, this movie teaches us that anyone can be a superhero, from a teenager to an adult, from someone perky to someone quiet. You just have to be brave enough to be one. In my opinion, this movie is the most epic Spider-Man movie ever and one of the best movies of their year.

The Sun Will Come Up. BY MÍA DIPP

Liliana is a very expressive girl; she has no mask with her emotions. She can light up a room with her joy or darken even the joyful times with her sadness. That partly caused the reason she's a romantic, her joy lead her to daydreams with someone to even more joyful times.   Then one day, she met Luciana. Lucy was a perfectionist and a direct person; she wasn't scared to tell someone her opinion if she wanted to. Liliana asked her out since she admired her attitude and her honesty to others. She was surprised when Lucy accepted but only if she got to decide where and when. Weeks later in the relationship, Liliana felt as though she was floating in the clouds, the tender touch of Lucy's hand in hers made her heart soar and the attention they gave one another made her feel like the only girl in the world.   They both ignored everyone else when they said it wouldn't work out because of their different personalities, that sooner or later they would disagree on something they'll be too stubborn to change opinion. Because at that moment, the only thing they cared about was their love for one another.   But Lucy's tender touches turned unloving and brief when her attention shifted back to her grades and her priority was back at doing things her way. Liliana understood at first but she became impatient and irritated when homework would be chosen than having a movie date on weekends. School didn't play a part in the romantic fantasies she dreams of in her mind. Her light and cheery clouds turned dark and stormy, without joy and full of dark emotions. Their conversations turned into arguments for they each wanted different things and couldn't come to an agreement.   PG. 25

The Sun Will Come Up. BY MÍA DIPP

That led them to break up and they each went their way, each finding a way to mend their hearts, one more broken than the other.  Liliana thought she knew how sadness felt when she failed a test but this was worse, so much worse. It felt as though someone had ripped her heart out of her chest and leaving a bleeding wound, one that reopened each time she saw Lucy at school. The storm passed but the rain stayed, drenching the colors in her background to sorrowful tones.   Months later, when her chemistry partner asked her out, Liliana felt happiness but fear also. It's not that Marco isn't a good guy, he held doors open for her and paid attention to her during to their conversations enough that caused her to daydream of them becoming something more. She would feel her heart speed up when she looked into his eyes and the butterflies tickling her stomach when their skin touched. But she was scared to leave her heart open and vulnerable to someone who could crush it with one move. Liliana was scared to lose the sun in her life when she just got it back. 'The sun will always come back after the night has passed' Liliana thought as Marco blushed with embarrassment and looked at her with hope and fear. She knows that she'll get her heart broken many times in her life but it's her job to get back up, to be able to keep her world bright and joyful. You can't live your life in fear and not step into the unknown with her heart on your hand.  So with a smile, Luciana looks up into his eyes and says, "I would love to".

THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE By Mía Dipp

This article will discuss all their movies, including Avengers: Endgame so if you get spoiled, you had been warned.

IT'S AN END OF AN ERA.

M.C.U. SINCE 2008.

Endgame marked the passing-of-the-torch from half of the original avengers: Black Woman, Natasha Romanoff, sacrifices herself so that half of the population of the universe can be returned and balance be restored; Steve Rogers, the now former Captain America, gives his famous shield to Sam Wilson (Falcon) and in doing so, gives him the title of Captain America; and last but definitely not least, Iron Man, aka Tony Stark, also sacrifices his life to vanish Thanos and his army and passes down to Peter Parker (Spider-Man and hinted protégé) the EDITH (Even Death I'm The Hero) glasses, which have a powerful but dangerous AI tech. Their sacrifices and passed down items marks the end of the story that had started with Iron Man in 2008 and ever since with the MCU's famous after-scene credits. The purpose of the after-scene credits were to hint of something bigger coming and fill the Marvel Fans with curiosity, excitement and frustration for having to wait long to figure out what's coming next. And the big wait came down to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

When AMC launched Infinity War's pre-tickets alongside its first trailer on March 16 and in just 72 hours broke the record for pre-release ticket sales. This movie received $2,048,134,200 in world box offices (Both domestic and international), $100,180,863 in domestic video sales (Which include DVD and Blu-ray sales) and earned the fifth place on the highest-grossing films of all time. If this movie doesn't show you how much the MCU is part of our lives then the following Marvel movie will. It only took 6 hours for Avengers: Endgame to get the biggest day in any cinematic presale tickets and knock Star Wars: the Force Awakens from the top spot for day-one ticket sales on Fandango. Tickets were open on Tuesday, which resulted in a crazy frenzy from fans all over the world. I remember the CinÊpolis app and site crashing on the same day as and hundreds of thousand of fans and I tried to buy tickets all at once. My brother learned from that and went to the movie theater himself to buy tickets for the midnight-opening show for himself and his friends, where he waited in line from six to eight hours. This movie broke many records: in earning 1.209 billion dollars in its opening weekend, in global records with $2,796,150,478. And if that's not enough, the movie became the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing both Avatar and Titanic. The money was worth it as we rejoiced when all the superheroes united to go against Thanos and his army as it also allowed us a bitter goodbye to some of our favorite characters who helped formed the MCU, including our last cameo of the creator, Stan Lee, who sadly passed away in 2018 on November 12. Avengers: Endgame allowed the start of a new story, a new generation of heroes who will try their best to protect the galaxy and its entire people.

SKINCARE 101

Beauty

by Sofia Montero

Skin care can look scary and overwhelming at first, but follow these dos and don'ts and it will help you achieve your skin goals until you have the clearest of skin. DRINK WATER It can be repetitive and annoying when someone tells you to drink water, but clear skin starts on the inside. Drinking water will keep you and your skin feeling hydrated and glowing. You should drink at least 2 liters of water every single day and avoid other sugary or caffeinated drinks. KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE Knowing your skin type is key to make it better. There are six skin types: dry, oily, combination, sensitive, acne prone and normal. Some people have more than one skin type, and knowing this will help you target and treat each part of your skin correctly. Using the wrong products can worsen your skin condition and take a longer healing process. You can use these characteristics to know your skin type: If you have small pores and flaky skin, you have dry skin; if it's shiny and have large pores, you have oily skin; if you have an oily nose, forehead and chin but dry cheeks, you have combination skin; sensitive skin tends to be red or irritated; acne prone skin is for people who have issues with breakouts and cysts; and lastly normal skin is usually glowy, hydrated and with little to no breakouts.

FOLLOW A ROUTINE Once you know your skin type you need to establish and follow a skincare routine, every skin type needs special products,if you have problem skin it is recommended to see a specialist. Your routine should include a cleanser, face scrub (which should only be used once a week) moisturizer and sunscreen. Doing this will reduce the amount of bacteria on our face and keep your pores clean. DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE Touching your face will leave bacteria from your hands in your face, which will clog your pores and cause breakouts. Avoid touching or popping your pimples or scratching your face, nails will scratch the top layer of skin and popping pimples will leave a scar, both of these leave your skin exposed to bacteria, dirt and debris. WEAR SPF Wearing sunscreen is an essential part of skincare, the UV rays th sun releases can cause aging and burning as well as increasing the possibility for skin cancer. To avoid this, you should use sunscreen everyday, no matter the weather, with at least 30 spf, with UVA and UVB protection.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

GROWING UP AN ONLY CHILD by Sofia Montero There are countless stereotypes of growing up an only child some say they are self-centered, lonely or quiet, every time you comment that you are an only child they respond with something like “makes sense” or “you don’t seem like one”. As an only child I can confirm and deny some of these stereotypes and tell you about my reality as an only child. My childhood was never boring, I would play by myself, sometimes I was allowed out to play with my neighbors and my parents would play with me at times. I was a very spoiled kid, I had too many toys and I barely ever had to share, sharing was hard to me at first, but I slowly started understanding. At this point I didn’t really mind not having any siblings. A few years later my family had issues with money and my mom saw the need to get a job, due to the money problem my parents couldn’t afford a babysitter so I would go to work with them. Every day after school, my mom would pick me up and take me to her job, I would just sit in a small corner doing my homework and playing computer games, I still had no problem and I always found a way to entertain myself. Years kept passing by and since I had no problem being there, my parents didn’t see the need to get a babysitter that was until the last few years of elementary school. I started getting tired and feeling lonely, looking back I always think how depressing it is to keep a child for years in an office. Entering middle school, I would stay at my grandma’s house after school it was a little more fun because my cousins would stay there as well. My younger cousins would arrive first, then me and lastly my older cousins, we would all eat dinner together, do our homework and hang out If we finished our homework, even if we didn’t have any time to hang out, having people your age around you makes you feel a lot better, this lasted a few months. Later on we were too busy to hang out and that feeling being with someone started fading, my younger cousins were two sisters and my older ones were three, I had no siblings and I started feeling left out. In high school, my parents told me I was finally old enough to be by myself in my house. I was so happy to hear this, I could finally be alone, rest and do whatever I wanted, I would spend hours listening to loud music, watch any TV show I wanted and dance around if I wanted, to this day I still love that about being by myself, but I sometimes find myself feeling lonely, sometimes even talking to myself. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want any siblings and it would annoy me so much to suddenly have someone in my house with me, some people have told me I can be a self-centered in my

THE USAGE OF ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES BY EDGAR CAMARGO

Tooth brushing and flossing go hand-in-hand as the mainstays of good oral care and proper technique is important for both activities. Using the correct techniques for twice-daily tooth brushing and flossing will help promote oral health for the long term. Electric toothbrushes are truly a remarkable invention, nonetheless it seems like actual society doesn’t consume much of this product because they consider it to be unnecessary and a luxury that doesn´t give the user a lot of benefits because they ignore the necessity to have a toothbrush that vibrates and rotates.

pg.33

SThe reality is that it is a revolutionary invention that gives the user multiple benefits and advantages that a normal toothbrush can´t provide. The reason why electric toothbrushes have this kind of features, is because the rotation of the head helps to get to deeper places more easily, as well as the vibration mechanism, it is very functional in terms of movement and removing the necessity to move the toothbrush manually, being a more ergonomically effective option when it comes to buying a toothbrush. Believe it or not, many school-aged children are now enthusiastic about brushing their teeth. We can thank the invention of the rechargeable electric toothbrush for this happy phenomenon. Rechargeable electric toothbrushes are easy to use. And although a rechargeable electric toothbrush costs more than a manual toothbrush, it may be worth it if your child (or you) is more enthusiastic about using it. The reliability of this type of devices take a lot of importance, due to the usually rechargeable battery of this devices. Not having the constant necessity to buy more and more batteries every time they run out is definitely more practical and using less time in unnecessary things like looking for batteries for devices that do use it. The way they charge is also generally by micro USB connection, so you will most likely will always be able to recharge the battery of your toothbrush.

pg.34

Most rechargeable electric toothbrushes operate at anywhere from 5,000 to 30,000 strokes on your teeth per minute, and because of this, it takes less time to do a thorough job. Some rechargeable electric toothbrushes have even more power. Even if you've been brushing and flossing your teeth since childhood, you may have developed some bad habits over the years, such as brushing too hard, ignoring your back teeth and forgetting to floss. With proper brushing technique with a rechargeable electric toothbrush and little practice you’ll be brushing with confidence knowing you’re using the clinically proven technology of a rechargeable electric toothbrush to clean your teeth. Keeping proper care of your oral hygiene is what companies that fabricate electric toothbrushes are considering when they think of the design and the different features that the product is going to have..

SLEEPING, A NECESSITY AND A MYSTERY

By Edgar Camargo

There's nothing better than agood night's rest. But have you ever wondered why that's true? It's hard to understand how important sleep is to staying healthy and feeling your best until you haven't slept enough. But when you add the number of hours you spend sleeping, that amounts to about a third of your life—so it must be good for something. Many scientists have pondered the question of why sleeping gives our brain such a boost. After all, it’d be ideal if we didn’t need to sleep at all. It may seem obvious that sleep is good for people, even without fully grasping what sleep does for us, we know that going without sleep for too long makes us feel terrible, and that getting a good night's sleep can make us feel ready to take on the world. Scientists have gone to great lengths to fully understand sleep's benefits. In studies of humans and other animals, they have discovered that sleep plays a critical role in immune function, metabolism, memory, learning, and other vital functions. The features in this section explore these discoveries and describe specific ways in which we all benefit from sleep. Although scientists aren't entirely sure why we sleep, they have many ideas about the functions of this mysterious part of our lives. While some of these functions may have deep evolutionary roots, others, such as sleep's potential role in memory and health, seem particularly relevant to life in the 21st century. pg.36

They think sleep is important for two main reasons: It helps us repair and restore our organ systems including our muscles, immune systems, and various other hormones. And it plays a crucial role in memory, helping us retain what we learned at work or school for later use. The popular opinion us that it is more difficult to take in new information following a night of inadequate or disturbed sleep. What’s more surprising is that it is just as important to get a good night’s sleep after learning something new in order to process and retain the information that has been learned. Healthy sleep is critical for everyone, since we all need to retain information and learn skills to thrive in life. But this is likely part of the reason children—who acquire language, social, and motor skills at a breathtaking pace throughout their development—need more sleep than adults. While adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, one-yearolds need roughly 11 to 14 hours, school age children between 9 and 11, and teenagers between 8 and 10.During these critical periods of growth and learning, younger people need a heavy dose of slumber for optimal development and alertness. Unfortunately, a person can't just accumulate sleep deprivation and then log many hours of sleep to make up for it. The best sleep habits are consistent, healthy routines that allow all of us, regardless of our age, to meet our sleep needs every night, and keep on top of life's challenges every day.

HISTORICAL

We got a lot more information ABOUT OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS’ SEX LIVES BY EDGAR CAMARGO

When our ancestors first migrated out of Africa around 60,000 years ago, they were not alone. At least two of our hominid cousins had made the same journey, Neanderthals and Denisovans. Neanderthals, the better known of the two species, left Africa about 300,000 years ago and settled in Europe and parts of western Asia. The Denisovans are a much more recent addition to the human family tree. In 2008, paleoanthropologists digging in a cave in southern Siberia unearthed a 40,000-year-old adult tooth and an exquisitely preserved fossilized pinkie bone that had belonged to a young girl who was between five and seven years old when she died.

But many expected that it was only a matter of time before researchers found evidence of Denisovans elsewhere. Some modern humans in Asia and Oceania carry traces of Denisovan DNA, raising the possibility that the hominin lived far away from Siberia. And some researchers think that unclassified hominin fossils from China could be Denisovan. pg.38

Learning about the people that once crossed with other race brings us a new perspective about the world that surround us today, considering the fact that the appearance of each race among humans has such a great impact y the manners of social view, perhaps; for now, knowing which specific genetic variants a person inherited from Neanderthal or Denisovan ancestors provides only limited information about a few physical traits.. Recently, scientists successfully extracted nuclear DNA from the pinkie bone and conducted comparison studies with the genomes of modern humans and Neanderthals. Studies show the girl was closely related to Neanderthals. Also, it was different enough to merit classification as a new species of archaic humans, which scientists named “Denisovan after the cave where the pinkie bone was found..The Denisovan genome also suggests the young girl had brown hair, eyes, and skin. While knowing how much DNA a person has in common with his or her Neanderthal or Denisovan ancestors may be interesting, these data do not provide practical information about a person’s current health or chances of developing particular diseases.

pg.39

Surprisingly, the scientists found genetic overlap between the Denisovan genome and that of some present-day East Asians. It appears the Denisovans contributed between 3 to 5 percent of their genetic material to the genomes of Melanesians. Scientists think that the most likely explanation is that Denisovans living in eastern Eurasia interbred with the actual human ancestors. When those humans crossed the ocean to reach Papua New Guinea around 45,000 years ago, they brought their Denisovan DNA. By comparing the genomes of apes, Denisovans, Neanderthals, and modern humans, scientists hope to identify DNA segments unique to the different groups. Identifying and understanding these genetic tweaks could help explain why our species survived while our close relatives died out.

MOVIE REVIEW

TOY STORY 4 By Diana Cervantes

DIVERSITY

Pg.49

There have been a few movies we have grown with and one of them has been Toy Story. We all know this amazing movie series which teaches us about long-lasting friendships and loyalty. After almost a decade DreamWorks animation released the 4thmovie, which was tricky since the last one had been great and everyone was pleased with the ending. They really had to think about how people would feel about the ending it had, because it involved their childhood. The plot in the fourth movie they involved a new character, Forky, so the younger generations could relate to it as the older generations did with the old characters. Woody, Buzz, and all the other toys went on a road trip with Bonnie. She had developed a relationship with Forky, because unlike all the other toys, she had created him. They embark on this journey and Woody is reunited with Bo Peep, who OMADC | 24 appeared on Toy Story and NToy Story 2.

A

M E "

At the end, I reflected on how it was good for him to find this change. He needed to move on. If you think about it, this movie teaches us a lesson. When you grow up and reach a full state of maturity you understand that moving on from being a “kid’s toy” to do something that will give you greater happiness is the right thing to do. There is a time when you need to settle down even if it involves leaving the ones you love and cherish. You can trust this review because as Woody said, “You have a friend in me.”

I was very excited to watch this movie because it would bring me memories from my childhood, and everyone likes to remember those moments. As I was watching it one thing that exalted was the quality of the production. If you were to compare Toy Story to Toy Story 4 you are able to see a remarkable change in the animation. For example, Andy’s dog had was not well animated but the cat that appeared on Toy Story 4 had incredible detail, as did the rest of the movie. While I watched it, I was enjoying it since it is funny and entertaining, you get to see some old friends you haven’t seen in a while, but I had very mixed emotions about the end. Since woody was not being used to play anymore he decided it would be best to stay with his reunited friend, Bo Peep, at a fair in which other kids played with them. In order for him to do that he had to be separated from Buzz Lightyear, Jesse, and all his other friends. This was really hard for me to watch since I had grown up knowing these two, Woody and Buzz, were always there for each other. They are known as a dynamic duo. Seeing them let each other go was hard for me. I felt a little bit of betrayal.

WHY

STUDENTS

ALLOWED

TO

EAT

SHOULD DURING

BE

CLASS

BY DIANA CERVANTES While a student is in class they get distracted thinking, or seeing many things. The main thing one thinks about would be food. Either they are wondering about what they are going to eat later or any cravings they might be having. There is just something about being in class that makes you want to eat. The only thing preventing the students from eating is the school, which the teacher reinforces. Even if food is a crucial thing to live, since food is very important. This essay shows all the reasons why students should be allowed to eat during class A necessity as a student is that you need to concentrate while you are in class. A way to achieve that is by eating. If students are allowed to eat in class they can be paying attention, since they will not get distracted. For example, when students use a fidget spinner. The same effect works with food. If they are paying attention that means they will be quiet, therefore it becomes a better learning environment. This will benefit the whole class, everyone will be focused on their work or the teacher. Which is a teacher’s dream. Another point that should be considered in the decision if students should eat during class is that it will give them a sense of responsibility. Students know how hard it is to let them eat, because the main reason why teachers say no is because of the trash and the smell the class would have. They will become responsible and start throwing the trash away and since they do not enjoy a smelly classroom they are expected to bring food that will not give a bad smell, like not bringing tacos. If they make a mess, they should be responsible by cleaning afterwards. This will take us to having a clean classroom, which also improves the learning environment. Last but not least, food is a necessity. The counterargument to all the things I have mentioned before would be that they are given specific times to eat, but sometimes there is just not enough time. In the morning when they need to have breakfast, occasionally they do not wake up since they are tired from all the extracurricular activities and homework they had to do the day before. Which is why students try to sleep as much as they can. Then at school when they have their breaks they are probably printing or doing more homework. By eating during class, they would be gaining energy. This energy can be consumed while they are learning, which means it will leave them truly obtaining knowledge. In conclusion, it would be a good idea to let students eat during class. It is a small thing that would improve the learning efficiency in the students. They will not be a unmotivated to go to school. I think it will improve their mental and physical health. Eating during class brings a lot of benefits to the students and teachers. Such as better use of classroom time, responsibility and happiness.

ts Virgo season, good things are coming your way, you might be feeling stressed right now due to work, friends or family. Stop procrastinating, be a little more social and relax. You might meet someone new or connect more with a person you already know.

You will struggle this month with yourself, you usually find yourself getting offended or throwing tantrums over little things. You need to relax and realize you don’t have to be so dramatic and not everything is about you, take a step back.

After a few days of struggling you will finally find peace, if you put your mind to it. Stop ignoring your problems, do something about it, you´re the only one with power over yourself and your decisions. Start working on that thing you have to do, stop leaving it for later.

You are smart, so you should know better than what you’re doing right now. Talk to someone, hiding your emotions is damaging your relationships and your efficiency, you’re getting a bit lazy, stop being closed off.

PAGE | CRUZ FAMILYand Stop taking11things so seriously cheer up a little bit. People don’t like seeing you mad and is not fun to be around someone in your mood. You know you can be fun and people think you can be extremely charismatic when you let yourself be.

How did you train?

I started training in Ciudad Deportiva for about 2 hours a day, after a while, as I progressed I started training 4 hours a day, 6 days a week
