Memories Objects

Memories Objects “Our memory hides all the references that once left a great mark on us. Objects and events that have had in some manner an impact on us in our taste and love for some objects, smells or situations; this is how mankind tends to value and repeat everything learnt in childhood. This collection pretends to release from the oblivion and review our most valuated things and bring them into the current context of the 21st century. The soul of the objects of memory is there waiting for us to discover it again. In our imagination is everything that has ever moved us. To release this legacy is our commitment, determination and effort. Mad Lab presents this collection named “Objects of Memory” with infinite houses, factories from another age, boxes of surprises, memories, games and toys, mirrors where to be looked at, racks where to bare your soul, utility and fantasy that are very familiar to us and provide an updated revised view from this century’s gaze”. Antonio Serrano

WE DREAM AND WE UNDERSTAND

Mad Lab is a long-standing dream where we believe everything is possible. We understand this crisis to be a great change that everyone must make in order to pull through the recession together whilst maintaining on values that we can be proud of.

WE COLLABORATE

02

WE BELIEVE

Mad Lab believes design is a tool that emotionally binds end user, designs the end user can understand the entire process and appreciate the values os each link.

Mad Lab works to channel projects of emerging, talented designers who, in light of the current crisis, struggle to make their ideas a reality. We therefore propose to offer a formative project for designers, artisans and industrialists to meet and exchange ideas. Our goal is to provide our community with other promotional and editorial companies with the aim of joining forces and producing further collaborations.

WE WORK

Mad Lab applies its philosophy of sustainability to all areas of our business;products are durable, of proven quality, made with certified materials and highly recyclable. Furthermore, they must be manufactured locally and with a vision of a better world for us all. Our ethos, “with what I have, what I can create, expands our horizons towards previously inconceivable heights. 03

Language and the limits of material, whether natural or artificial, define an incalculable amount of design. Every man has the right to search for the limits of material in order to offer the world a new vision of transformed reality.

FĂ BRICAS Not all stories were well told in the past, not even that one in which factories all worked together in unison, to the beat of the hustle and bustle of men and women coming and going at the sound of a siren. 06

Houses is a collection of objects that represents our most cherished childhood. It is also a space of unions and ensembles, of possible encounters and relations. Each element in itself could be our ideal home where the order that we ourselves propose

reigns supreme. They are objects that we would all like to make and play with because they form part of our essence as human beings; creativity, reflection and the shelter of hours whiled away in child’s play.

CHRISTMAS HOME The bond that links our heart to our emotions is made up of subtle threads of colour that are hung upon that symbolic tree we normally put up at Christmas. We have strived to instill the spirit of the Christmas Home Collection with those little details that go into what is a universal ritual in the Western world. This is the bond that links the house to the tree and the tree to our lives for one magical moment.

The tree and its wood have always had a magical relationship with Man. It is this relationship which has life after life, which talks to us telling old stories of men who sat in the shelter of its shade or danced in ceremonies of Oak Men, druids from long, long ago. It tells stories of pilgrims who wandered the land in search of the positive energy they believed was transmitted by the Tree of Life. So say the elders of the place.

DESIGNERS “Every object tells a story, stories of entrepreneurship, design, craft and technology. More importantly they tell stories about those who made them their own, knew how to look after them and dreamed of them being given as presents to loved ones or passed on as a cherished legacy to their heirs.”

Antonio Serrano

146

An important role of any object is the impression it makes in a space. My ideal objects, what I strive to create, are pieces that you somehow want to hold in your hand, pieces that fit well into the environs they are placed in. They contain layers of seemingly contrasting elements.

Sohei Arao

“I like objects that talk for themselves, that tell stories, that say a lot with very little, that you like but you don’t know why, that make you say: why didn’t I think of it earlier?, those that seduce you without even trying, that close up make you fall in love, that are never out of fashion, that attract you when you see them yet amaze you when you touch them, that you like increasingly more with each use, that produce a surprisingly original déjà vu feeling, the modest, simple, aunthentic, as Antonio puts it, those with a soul".

“We believe in coherent, universal products which civilise the space they inhabit, converting the ordinary in extraordinary and, without a doubt, making the user experience more simple. Design is often of a social nature eclipsed by different fashions and trends. We reject such a view, clearly good design is no added value but quite the contrary, it should be an intrinsic value of the product. For this reason, we avoid any unnecessary finishing’s, embracing the expressive quality of each material in order to produce a coherent, universal expression that meets the sincere conceptual needs of the product. It is only like this that we will be able to make the world a better, friendlier, more respectable and sustainable place between us all.”

DESIGNERS I am interested in the complexity of the simple, the difficulty in the obvious, the synthesis, that which the Japanese dominate and which is so difficult to attain. The intelligent modesty held by some objects where nothing is superfluous or lacking that teach us how the best design is never limited to the surface.

For an object to be appealing, it must possess a narrative, that makes us think, that is able to evoke a memory, offer an experience or the simplicity of a wink that can give us a smile without realizing. The functionality, when designing is very important but sometimes that is not enough. For me the design is more a collection of experiences that coexist in an object which together with a critical attitude try to respond to everyday needs in the most honest and consistent way possible.

Mad Lab has built a universe of objects that prompt to think, to recreate desired spaces and scenes that let you dream. For Mad Lab, I design from the culture, watching the roots, approaching the history and the local in order to be global. I design from the culture that I have experienced, from the art, signs, metaphors and traditions attached and linked to my social environment. The objects that I design look for a balance between form and function. They search emotion as well as the right and proper colours and textures.

Mad Lab treasures a deep respect for the person whose sensibility allows to establish a relationship of affection with what surrounds him. Each material is treated with great care and each material finds its primordial meaning. The object is not a watertight box closed in itself, but part of a story that the user will complete. It's an opportunity. It's a key.
