FALL 2020: ARCHITECTURE IN THE URBAN CONTEXT

GOWANUS FARMS PROFESSOR: BERRIN TERIM GOWANUS CANAL, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK PARTNER: VANESSA BARILLA

This office building in Brooklyn, New York, aims to incorporate a sustainable approach to architecture, while also establishing a relationship between conventional office space, farming space, and public space.

Gowanus Farms has a life cycle of its own; it grows, manufactures, and distributes products purely on site. The plants grown on the facade of the building are turned into products in the adjacent office areas and sold in the public market, or distributed to the rooftop restaurant and bar.

1. Leveled Farmland 2. In order to bring farmland into the city, while still maximizing surface area, the leveled farmland is folded upwards.

3. Within the folded farmland, a building is extruded to establish a structure where people can both work and maintain crops.

4. For crops that require an excess of sunlight, the building is shifted backwards to maximize the light exposure on the east side of the building.

5. To differentiate floors consisting of indoor farming from typical office floors, the building is contracted on the levels where folding created farmland.

SPRING 2021: A WRITER’S RETREAT THROUGH THE LENS OF LITERATURE

VILLA BELVEDERE PROFESSOR: JULIE WILKERSON GENOA, ITALY PARTNER: DAVE RYPKEMA

After reading and analyzing the novel, Mr. Palomar by Italo Calvino, the project called for the selection of images that represent meaningful excerpts; these were then compiled into a composite image. This ideogram was registered onto existing site drawings, which then informed the building design.

Villa Belvedere claims to devise a narrative between city and building, path and person, creating a dialogue between the pause found in the portal and the movement found in the path. Colliding masses breaks the building into a microcosmic city, using form to create variance in path and space. Material awareness, along with the large building masses, impose order along a gradient of silence.

Excerpt From Site Walk-Through Narrative:

Architecture through the lens of Literature

As Mr. Palomar departs from the funicular, he finds himself walking the steep streets of Righi, Italy. The walk is short before he catches sight of the bright white retreat that he has been calling home for the past eight weeks. Just like every time he enters the premises, Mr. Palomar runs his hands on the materials that encapsulate the buildings. The sudden shift from the concrete wall to the stone portal initiates a subconscious change in surroundings.

Suddenly, Mr. Palomar finds himself surrounded by the liveliness of the public piazza. A constant breeze passes through the voids before him, sweeping through the piazza. There are people everywhere, conversing and taking in the perfectly framed views.

BREATHING ARCHIVE CENTER PROFESSOR: MIGUEL ROLDAN + ZANA BOSNIC BARCELONA, SPAIN PARTNER: ANNA STONE

In recognition of Illdefons Cerdá, along with the recognition that Barcelona is once again crowded with industry, the Breathing Archive Center aims to transform the site based on its qualities and provide to the city the same conditions that Cerdá envisioned.

The Breathing Archive Center acts as an urban sponge, or cleaning machine, that gives back to the city by purifying the air and capitalizing on natural processes. This is done through two different concepts: the first being a “cleaning machine” through the use of landscape and the natural environment; the second being a “cleaning machine” through its construction and use of materials within the built environment.
