A soft light emerges from city park as the stars and galaxies glow in the night. Lights illuminate the winding pathway that runs through the park mimicking the heavenly bodies above.Visitors relax on viewing mounds or sit on benches and gaze upon the celestial show in the sky. When the sun rises in the sky and the stars fade away, light filters through the trees that surround the viewing mounds generating spectacular light and shadow. As the earth revolves around the sun and the sky changes with the rotating world visitors are able to see the sky in all its phases. The park acts as an observatory with lenses or telescopes that open a window to the cosmos just beyond our reach. SKY VIEWING MOUND

The tall grasses and wildflowers sway in the gentle breeze that blows across the prairie. Emerging from the sea of grass rises three skeletal forms resembling the ancient rolling hills of the surrounding areas. The mysterious forms offer refuge to the creatures, humans and animals alike, that come to the prairie. Plants growing around the structures slightly camouflage the wire frame form offering a sense of protection to the harborage from the outside forces that threaten it.Visitors are offered a filtered view through the skeleton form of the shelters to the ocean of land that lies beyond. The harborage acts as a subtle fortress for observation in the unending elegant prairie landscape.

5 billion years ago in one single instance the earth began. Life giving sun shined upon the planet creating an ever-changing world. Plants began to blanket the land filling the earth with their gentle whispers. Animals danced, insects roamed, and the landscape was good. With the creation of the planet an energy began to flow through every living creature on Earth. This energy both real and imagined connects life to our very roots. Over centuries of humans inhabiting this earth, our connection to nature has begun to wane. Skyscrapers replaced trees and concrete replaced grass. The energy that once flowed so heavily through our bodies has disappeared. North Brother Island is a special place. It has been ravaged by humans and left to die. Today nature is reclaiming the land. The energy that once flowed through island is starting to reappear and give life to the once dead place. Humans must learn to rediscover the magic of nature and feel the energy move through them once more.

FINAL PLAN

LOCATION: SALINA, KS SKILLS: DESIGN, COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION, PHOTOSHOP, SKETCHUP (BASE)

The rain slowly beats its melodic drum against the glass of the window. The water falling outside is directed into the lush rain gardens, positioned outside the school buildings. The rain and clouds begin to clear up and students fill the campus.Visitors walk through the rain gardens on a meandering wood deck and observe the water slowly being absorbed into the ground. Informational signs on the pathway explain the natural processes that take place in the garden. As time passes from month to month the color and texture of the garden changes with the transitioning seasons. At night a soft white light illuminates the pathway and trees, allowing visitors safe passage. The rain garden offers ecological services as well as beauty to the visitors that come and go.

The sun sinks towards the horizon, and the glow of the city park can be seen from just around the bend in the road. The aura radiating from the park, pulls visitors through its entrance and into a cosmic display. A group of teenagers are playing basketball like particles of dust swirling through a nebula. A smaller group of people gather in an amphitheater gazing at the celestial bodies far away looking at the sky, sensing the wonder. Gravity grounds the visitors, they hear the laughter of children as they run through the cool evening air like a comet shooting through the night sky. As the otherworldly experience comes to an end, the subtle glow and the atmosphere of the park does not fade, but will continue to draw visitors back into its orbit.
