YOUTH & GOVERNMENT NEW!

(Gr 6-12) With more than 500 students from 26 different schools and branches of the YMCA, New Jersey Youth & Government is driven by its commitment to civic engagement. Each year, students come together to build and run their own legislative chambers, courts, lobby firms, response committees and press initiatives. • Delegates gain and develop tools, perspectives and community to take initiative. • Students are better able to understand and get involved in political and public affairs; communicate ideas and opinions; develop research, writing and presentation skills; and understand the value of student leadership.

• Students get to see the legislative process done first hand by participating as senators, assemblymen, justices, lobbyists and members of the media in our legislative simulation.

We’re saying goodbye to the fish names for classes and hello to an upgraded Y Swim Lesson curriculum. The fish names we previously used to identify the different levels have been replaced with names that more closely align with the skills we will work on in each stage. Swim stages A, B and C give our youngest friends, infants and toddlers, an opportunity to get comfortable in the water with a parent or guardian. In stages 1-3, our trained swim instructors facilitate activities that focus on building confidence in the water, instilling good water safety habits and personal growth. In stages 4-6, instructors help swimmers build confidence in deep water as well as work on stroke techniques. This exciting new curriculum helps each participant experience a sense of accomplishment after each lesson.

STEM: PREPARING YOUTH TODAY FOR THE FUTURE Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is an important part of youth development because it creates opportunities for youth to achieve, build relationships and feel a sense of belonging as they question, investigate, build, test, solve problems, analyze, communicate findings and perform cognitive thinking. Through our STEM programs, including enrichment offerings, programs at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center and our summer day camps, we prepare youth today for the future. We believe that all kids have potential and that nurturing that potential means fostering problem-solving, creativity, planning,

Preschool analysis and decision-making skills. Our STEM programs provide youth with the skills needed to succeed. Day

Y ACHIEVERS PROGRAM NEW! We prepare youth for life beyond high school.

The Madison Area YMCA’s Y Achievers program is an academic achievement and career development initiative for teens in grades 8-12. Incorporating the Y’s Four Core Values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility, and an evidence-based curriculum based on the Five Pillars: academics, college knowledge, positive relationships, life skills and positive identity, this program succeeds when students of all races, genders, and sexual orientations are encouraged to have a safe space to learn, grow and thrive. Through Y Achievers, we provide developmentally based, extracurricular team mentorship and workshop activities, designed to give teens the tools they need to succeed in college and beyond. Teens learn what it takes to become a leader. Y Achievers goes beyond the classroom, as we develop the individual talents, academic & leadership capabilities of each participant while instilling a greater sense of self–confidence, identity, inclusiveness, diversity and building positive relationships.

Grades: 8-12 When: Wednesdays 6-7:30PM

Where: Boszhardt Family Teen Center

All communications for our Y Achievers program are available in both English and Spanish. For more information, please contact Associate Youth & Teen Director Kiana Cunningham at kcunningham@madisonymca.org or 973.822.9622 x2233.
