Dear Madeira Friends, The 2010 – 2011 year was one of transition and change as well as celebration and excitement. Faculty, staff, students, parents and alumnae welcomed our new Head of School, Pilar Cabeza de Vaca, with great enthusiasm: 1,200 attended events held in 11 states across the country and more than 500 came to her installation ceremony last September. Every member of the faculty and staff gave to The Madeira Fund. Additionally, both the Senior Parents and their daughters, the Class of 2011, reached 100% participation in The Madeira Fund. Finally, Madeira parents reached 93% participation and our alumnae increased their giving from 28% to 34% participation. The numbers and statistics show that the Madeira community

is dedicated and truly cares about our school. The outpouring of support on behalf of every constituent group this year proved to our new Head, and to our entire community, that we are committed, we are engaged and we are eager to face new challenges. The exceptional accomplishments described in the Annual Report that follows would not have been possible without the generosity of those listed on these pages and their heartfelt belief in the power of educating young women. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I extend my deepest gratitude to the alumnae, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends who continue to believe in the mission of The Madeira School. I look forward to a new school year which I know will provide tremendous opportunities for growth in the vibrant and dedicated community of Madeira. Sincerely,

COMMUNITY

T

he Madeira School has always consisted of a tightly knit

community of alumnae, students, faculty, staff, parents,

relatives, friends and many others who share a love for the

School and what it stands for. Madeira was shown an outpouring of support by its community members this past year, support which sustains this community and allows the School to thrive and grow.

Many philanthropic milestones were achieved as part of the Madeira Fund in 2010–2011, including:

100% 100% 93% Participation in The Madeira Fund by the board of directors

Participation in The Madeira Fund by Faculty & staff

Participation in The Madeira Fund by current parents

100% 100% 34% Participation in The Madeira Fund by the senior class Girls

Participation in The Madeira Fund by senior class parents

Participation in The Madeira Fund by Alumnae

these participation results demonstrate the commitment to keeping Madeira’s community strong. 8 Madeira Today

OF GIVING the community also gave their time and effort as volunteers and made other contributions to support the school:

Alumnae brought the Madeira community together beyond the white fences by hosting over 20 events around the country.

Students enhanced the Madeira community as they shined inside and outside of Madeira as athletes, performers, artists, scientists and much more.

Over 30 alumnae became new volunteers this year by joining the ranks of the Class Agents, Class Secretaries and the Alumnae Association Leadership Council.

A wide variety of produce and flowers are growing in the newly established Community Garden which was initiated in April by campus residents and community members.

Additional faculty and staff are living on campus and growing the community with the completion of the Griffith Cottages.

Parents worked to bring the Madeira community together in numerous ways on campus as members of the Parents’ Association.

Nearly 550 members of the community attended the September 2010 Installation of Pilar Cabeza de Vaca to welcome her to Madeira. This event was a great success thanks to contributions from many members of the Madeira community. The program included remarks from the Co-Chairs of the Head Search Committee, Sarah Pettit Daignault ’66 and Jennifer Evers Shakeshaft ’91; the Rev. Maryetta Anschutz ’93 who gave the invocation; and Nerissa vom Baur Roehrs ’59 who composed the anthem for the Installation of The Head of School. FALL2011

Maintaining and improving the buildings and grounds of our unique campus is a major financial responsibility. A campus as large and as beautiful as Madeira’s requires a financial commitment in order to be preserved and enhanced. During the year the five new faculty houses, named the Griffith Cottages, were completed and are now occupied. Other major projects this year included replacing both the heating and air conditioning equipment in the Chapel/Auditorium; the paddocks on the east side of the main driveway were reconfigured and replanted to control soil erosion; and the main driveway was repaved and a concrete edge was added to stabilize the gravel parking strip. The Board also approved the refinancing of the School’s long-term debt, $18.9 million, to stabilize the interest rate for ten years. The Board of Directors continues their efforts towards strengthening the School financially, distributing financial aid to families, funding faculty salaries to draw the best candidates and maintaining the campus’ deferred facilities maintenance needs. Thanks to your continued support, Madeira will succeed for years to come in educating Madeira Girls. Respectfully submitted,

H. Braughn Taylor, Ph.D. Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer

adeira’s endowment is important to the continued success of the School. From keeping the lights on in the dorms to supporting numerous scholarships, the annual

draw from the endowment contributes each year to the operating budget and helps to shape the experience and education for Madeira girls — past, present and future. These visionary gifts given to the endowment have provided support for many of the School’s priorities and, due to the generous support of our donors and careful stewardship of their gifts, this year the endowment was valued at $54.9 million as of June 30, 2011. Invested in perpetuity and held in trust, over 80 endowed funds make up Madeira’s endowment. Establishing an endowed fund or scholarship is an excellent way to memorialize or honor a classmate, celebrate your years spent at Madeira or simply to show your continued support of the School. A minimum gift of $50,000 is necessary to create a fund or scholarship. Gifts may also be given to existing funds. Le ttie pAt e Whitehe Ad schoL AR ship G iFt The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation is a charity that is committed to the support of education for young women in the southeast, providing scholarships to deserving female students. Based in Atlanta, Georgia and named in honor of Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans, the foundation aims to perpetuate Mrs. Evans’ generosity and her belief in the power of women’s education. More than 200 institutions across the southeast receive scholarship grants from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, giving thousands of young women financial assistance in individual amounts determined by the institutions. Madeira is fortunate to be one of the very few secondary schools that benefit from a generous grant that provides financial aid to deserving students. The relationship between Madeira and the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation began in 2008 after careful research and a grant application on behalf of the School. Over the past few years, the generous gifts from the foundation have provided Madeira girls with financial support and afforded them the many opportunities offered at Madeira. On behalf of the faculty, staff and the students who benefit from financial aid, The Madeira School is extraordinarily grateful for the continued generosity and support of the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation.

pin K AWAR d KAtheRin e Kies ’07 When Katherine Kies ’07 came to Madeira, she knew in her heart that she was meant to work in the hospitality industry. She went on to attend the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration (SHA). Upon her graduation, Katherine was awarded the Drown Special Prize, the top honor at the SHA recognizing not only her strong academic performance, but also her community involvement and entrepreneurial spirit. Like many Madeira girls, Katherine believes in not only the power of education but, perhaps even more importantly, the pursuit of one’s dreams. She credits her years at Madeira for providing her with the drive, confidence, experience and education for her past success and future endeavors. Katherine has generously decided to use a portion of the Drown Prize funds to inspire more Madeira girls to follow their dreams. Katherine’s nickname at Madeira was “Pink Girl” and when establishing the award, she chose the acronym PINK (Passion, INitiative, Knowledge) to symbolize the characteristics that the recipient should embody. The establishment of the PINK Award will help fund a Madeira student to engage in a field or industry for which she has a sincere, honest and genuine passion. Girls may apply for a $2,000 grant to be used to facilitate her Co-Curriculum experience or otherwise broaden a keen interest in a certain field. Katherine’s generous gift comes as no surprise. Her successful work in an industry that aims to please and delight the masses has come even closer to home, providing the unique opportunity for a Madeira girl to chase her dreams and pursue her passion.

each year, members of the Madeira community contribute generous gifts to The Madeira Fund, our annual giving program.

These gifts cover approximately 8% of the School’s annual oper-

ating budget. Without this essential support from our alumnae, current and past parents, grandparents and friends, Madeira would not be able to offer the many wonderful programs and opportunities currently made available to the girls. We are very grateful for the generosity that the community shows year after year. This past year was no exception. Over 2,200 donors made their annual contributions to The 2010 – 2011 Madeira Fund and raised a total of $1,570,291. Leading the way, our Leadership Gift Club donors contributed $1,323,591, which constitutes 84% of the total dollars raised. ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

T

he Alumnae Association Leadership Council (AALC) had a productive and busy year in 2010 – 2011. Building on a robust infrastructure of committees created in past years, the council set to work connecting more alumnae to each other and the School through

a series of regional events hosted by AALC members. A group of alumnae from the classes of 1968 – 1972 went to Broadway to see Driving Miss Daisy followed by a Dutch treat lunch. Another group viewed several exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum and had lunch at the Patron’s Dining Room. Others took a trip to the orchid show at the New York Botanical Garden. In Philadelphia, alumnae enjoyed a luncheon at the Acorn Club to hear Cece Turner Haydock ’71 lecture on Edith Wharton and the Villas of Rome. There were Young Professional Happy Hours in the Washington, D.C., New York and San Francisco areas. Charlotte, NC alumnae were treated to a private tour of a soon to open exhibit entitled “Courage” at the Museum of the New South. Alumnae in Pittsburgh toured the Flower Show at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens followed by a luncheon. In other actions, our Stewardship Committee filled more Class Agent positions. Our Volunteer Committee found alumnae to replace departing Class Secretaries and fill empty spots. Two AALC members were named to be liaisons with Class Secretaries. Our new Social Networking Committee collaborated with the Alumnae Office to enhance the alumnae online experience, increase the daily traffic on Madeira’s Facebook pages and grow the number of Madeira connections on LinkedIn. Our Nominating Committee recruited six new AALC members and helped the AALC maintain a healthy total of 25 members. A special thanks goes out to Cathy Shraga ’70 for her service as President of the AALC. If you would like to learn more about the AALC, please call Holland Williams ’83 in the Alumnae Office at (703) 556-8223.

you can keep up with what the Madeira Alumnae Relations office is up to by becoming a part of the Madeira Alumnae Relations Facebook page. if you prefer to receive “tweets” then find us on twitter; twitter.com/madeiraalumnae.

The Parents’ Fund, which is a portion of The Madeira Fund, is relied upon to help cover the gap between tuition revenue and the true cost of educating today’s Madeira girls. The Parents’ Fund allows the School to provide the best possible education and environment for its students. On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, we would like to thank all the parents who participated for their generous support of the School.

se nio R pAR en t GiF t pR oG R AM Ac hie V es 1 00% pARti cipAt io n! On June 2, 2011, during Affirmation, Madeira unveiled the Chapel / Auditorium’s newly upgraded sound system. This upgrade was made possible by the support of Madeira’s Class of 2011 parents who donated to the Senior Parent Gift Program to honor their daughters. We are proud that 100% of the senior parents participated and surpassed their goal by raising over $120,000 toward the program! The entire Madeira community will benefit from the upgraded sound system for years to come and parents of the Class of 2011 have left a lasting legacy with this gift. A plaque commemorating this year’s Senior Parent Gift Program has been placed in the foyer of the Chapel/Auditorium outside of the sound booth. We would like to thank the senior parents, families, friends and the entire Class of 2011 who have participated and given to the Senior Parent Gift Program. A very special thanks goes out to the Senior Parent Gift Program Chair, Margaret Doubleday P’11, whose leadership and efforts made this year’s success possible.

A special thank you goes out to Whembley sewell ’11 for her creation of a video highlighting the need for a new sound system in the chapel/Auditorium. to see the video visit www.vimeo.com/16028609.

Senior girls reached 100% participation in record time and raised over $1,500! We would like to thank every single member of the Class of 2011 for participating in giving back to the School. The class decided to use the funds they raised to purchase a microphone for the Chapel/Auditorium, which complemented their parents’ gift of upgrading the sound system through the Senior Parent Gift Program. Special thanks goes to the Chair of the Senior Class Giving Committee, Maggie Stich ’11. Congratulations to the Class of 2011 for honoring their time at Madeira with this very generous gift!

ounded in 1992, the Greenway Society is an honorary organization of those

who have chosen to support Madeira’s mission through charitable bequests, trusts, life-income gifts and various other planned gifts.

Madeira has been fortunate that members throughout our community remembered the School in their estate plans over the years. In 2010 – 2011 over $2 million was realized. Gifts of this kind have played a significant role in Madeira’s first century. These unique gifts provide the resources that allow Madeira to continue its tradition of excellence.

th e R e A R e seVeRA L ty p es o F p LAn ned GiFts: Bequests: You may provide for Madeira in your will with a specific amount, leave a percentage of your estate to the School or designate the School as a residual beneficiary. Life Income Gifts: There are several types of life income gifts to consider: • Charitable Gift Annuity: A contract that provides you and/or your designated beneficiary with income for life or for a specified number of years. Current annuity rates range from five to ten-and-a-half percent, depending on the age of the annuitant. • Pooled Income Fund: You transfer assets to a fund managed by Madeira in which all gifts are “pooled” for investment purposes with the income shared proportionally among participants. • Charitable Remainder Trust: You transfer assets to the trust in return for an income stream for life or a specified term of years. Upon death, or the end of the term, assets are distributed to Madeira.

Greenway society members are presented with a gold pin or cuff links upon becoming a member

• Charitable Lead Trust: You transfer assets to a trust and Madeira receives the income stream from the trust. At the end of the trust, the principal reverts to the donor or another beneficiary. Life Insurance:You may name Madeira the owner and beneficiary of a policy; if you continue to pay the premiums, you will be credited for the amount of the premiums in the years they are paid. You may also name Madeira as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs): You may name Madeira as the beneficiary of your IRA. All taxes are avoided when IRAs are contributed by bequest to a non-profit organization. In addition, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may make charitable gifts directly from your IRA accounts without incurring income tax on the withdrawal. Real Estate:You may contribute a primary residence or vacation home outright, or reserve the right to occupy your home for a term of years or for life. We are deeply grateful to the members of the Greenway Society for having the generosity and foresight to take a serious interest in the School’s future and contribute in this powerful way. If you would like to become a member of the Greenway Society, or if you are interested in receiving more information about planned giving opportunities, please contact the Development Office at (703) 556-8221.

Eleanor Johnson Estes ’96, P’09 Greenway Society Member aybe it’s her memories of Dr. Hager’s history class, Mr. Cai’s algebra class or perhaps it was her co-curriculum placement at the Insect Zoo at the National History Museum, but Eleanor Cromwell Johnson Estes’ time at Madeira will always hold a special place in her heart. As a boarder, Eleanor’s eyes were opened when she came to Madeira from Alabama: “Madeira has students and teachers from all walks of life here in the United States and all over the world — I was, and am, so fortunate for the different points of view, ideas and people I encountered during my years at Madeira.” When Eleanor’s step-daughter Campbell enrolled in 2007, Madeira’s significance in her life became even greater. “I knew what a great experience I had and watching Campbell learn the same things, meet new friends and make the same memories as I did, it reaffirmed why I loved the School.” As a proud alumna and parent, Eleanor has served Madeira in a variety of ways including her position as a Class Agent, a member of the Parent’s Fund Committee and her Reunion Committee.

M

After graduating from Madeira, Eleanor went on to Sewanee: The University of the South and the University of Alabama at Birmingham from which she received her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She now lives in Mountain Brook, Alabama with her husband, Claude, and their four children, Claude V, Campbell ’09, Dot and Cromwell. Active in her community, Eleanor serves on various boards, including The Red Cross of Birmingham, and is a member of the Cathedral Church of the Advent. By making a restricted bequest, Eleanor and her family have helped ensure the School’s future through their promise of a sustainable and thoughtful gift. When she speaks about Madeira, her passion for the School and for education is clear. “My husband and I truly believe in the power of giving back. Madeira has been a big part of our lives — from the education Campbell and I received there to the teachers who challenged me and the friends I made. I have chosen to become a member of The Greenway Society because I hope by giving back, that I can support Madeira and help future generations have the chance to participate in something that has deeply touched my life.”
