Attenborough’s Abberton N ATURALIST and broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough is to officially open the completed and enlarged Abberton Reservoir. A special event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 3, and will include a speech by Sir David following a tour of reservoir. Members of the public can apply to attend this ticket-only event by visiting the Essex & Suffolk Water website and will be allocated via ballot if the event is over subscribed.

Heidi Mottram, Chief Executive Officer of Essex & Suffolk Water said: “We’re really pleased to be welcoming such a distinguished guest as Sir David Attenborough to help us celebrate the Abberton Reservoir expansion scheme. “We all know Essex is one of the driest parts of the country, so to be able to secure water supplies for many, many years to come with this fantastic project is a real celebration and something we’re all looking forward to.’’ The official opening event will

take place at the Visitor Centre run in partnership with Essex Wildlife Trust. John Hall, Chief Executive Officer of Essex Wildlife Trust said: “We are all delighted that Sir David, who is President Emeritus of The Wildlife Trusts, is coming to open the Abberton expansion scheme.’’ The £150 million project began construction in 2010 and the major works were completed last year. billion litres and the additional water will bolster supplies to the Chelmsford, Basildon, Brentwood, Southend and Thurrock areas and also to some London boroughs. Abberton Reservoir is important to wildlife and wildfowl and is internationally important for dabbling ducks, such as Shoveler and Teal. The enhancement project has increased the amount of shallow water habitat crucial for these birds and also the waders that frequent the reservoir.

Mums enjoying a buggy fitness class at Beaulieu Park

M

UMS who want to get back into shape after having a baby can join new buggy fitness classes. Chelmsford City Council has teamed up with Super Mumma Fitness to bring the classes to Chelmsford. The classes started on April 14 and are located at Beaulieu Park, Sports Pavilion, Burnell Gate, every Tuesday at 9.30am (excluding school holidays) and are free to attend. Held outdoors, the exercises are performed using equipment around the park and your buggy, including:

lunges, squats, fast walking and jogging, step ups and boxing. These sessions are great for any mums looking at getting back into shape and fitness but are also a great starting point for mums who are not sure what type of exercises they can ease into after having a baby. This new initiative forms part of ‘woMEn TIME’, which is all about providing opportunities for women to be more active or to try a new sport, in a friendly and noncompetitive environment. The project is funded by

Sport England from money secured by a successful bid from Chelmsford City Council to get more women active over the next three years. Chelmsford City Council’s Women’s Sport and Wellbeing Officer, Rosie Hurrell, said: “These free fitness sessions are a brilliant way for ladies to try something new, enjoy our first-rate parks, make new friends with like-minded people and to get back into shape after having their baby.” For more information please visit website womentime.co.uk or call 01245 606206 to book.

GROUP of Essex girls have proved that cheerleading is not just for Americans, as they danced and twirled to a win in the US finals in Florida. Loughton based Casablanca Cheer sent its Gravity group, made up of nine to 14-yearolds girls, to the finals in

Pensicola, Florida after winning a qualification round at the British Cheerleading Association National Championships last year. The troupe went to the US event not expecting to win, but were blown away at the result winning the small junior level cheerleading division.

Head coach Carli Bacon, 26, said: “It does not get any better than this. We have come to the home of cheerleading not expecting to win and we have gone and done it. She added: “The competition faced by the nine-strong troupe was very fierce. For us this is the biggest thing by far.’’

Celebrating a very special brew

H

EAD Brewer Ethan Kannor has just produced a very special beer, Brentwood Brewing Company’s 1,000th brew. MD Roland Kannor said: These are exciting times for the Brewery. Who would have thought from a daft idea in a pub, we’d be proudly celebrating our thousandth brew nine years later. We felt it was fitting for this milestone brew to make what we started out with, our award-winning Summer Virgin.” With the help from Ethan Kannor Assistant Brewer Mike Holmes and Gerry Harrington from Navestock, who picked a lucky day to enjoy his Brewery Experience Day at Brentwood Brewery, the latest batch of Summer Virgin is now in the fermenter and will be ready to drink in a couple of weeks’ time. ETTING outside and enjoying our green spaces is one of the best ways to educate our children about our need to protect the our countryside, and Essex has plenty of green spaces of which to be proud. By learning to appreciate nature and it’s wildlife we can come to realise that these places are unique and irreplaceable. Our guide to green days out in Essex highlights some of the best spots to pay a visit. The Beth Chatto Gardens, Elmstead Market, Colchester. Green living starts in your home and garden, but if you need a little inspiration then there’s nowhere better to get it than the Beth Chatto Gardens. Once little more than a boggy ditch, the area has been carefully tended and now features an outstanding informal garden with a staggering variety of interesting plants. You can purchase one of 2,000 different plants at the nursery, attend a gardening lecture or simply relax in the tearooms. Belfairs Woodland Centre, Leigh-on Sea, Southend-on Sea. Learn all about Essex’s ancient woodlands at the Belfairs Woodland Centre. The centre is an invaluable interactive resource aimed at schools, families and small groups. It is run by volunteers from the Essex Wildlife Trust who keep the centre open seven days a week. If you are interested in learning more about managing woodland, then you can attend one of the many activities and events held at the centre. Those simply interested in enjoying a hot cup of coffee in a beautiful, butterfly rich environment are also welcome! Rainham Marshes, Purfleet. The RSPB bought these medieval marshlands from the army fifteen years ago, and since then the place has been transformed into a haven for wading birds, migrating ducks and

even birds of prey. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the centre’s picturewindows that look out over the marsh, but there’s plenty for families to do also. Boardwalks allow easy access throughout the reserve for a picturesque stroll along the banks of the Thames. Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, Brentwood. Hopefield provides a home for over 200 neglected, sick and mistreated animals. The horses, pigs, goats, cats and rabbits that are living here would have no where to go if it weren’t for the kindness of the volunteers that run the place. Hopefield is a small charity and resources are very tight. They are always looking for volunteers and donations to help keep the animals fed. Hopefield is an animal sanctuary rather than a petting zoo, so you should have a pair of wellies on and be prepared for mud, nettles and all. Wat Tyler Country Park, Basildon. This large stretch of parkland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to it’s rich diversity of rare wildlife and unique reedbed habitats. The RSPB have a visitor’s centre on site, and you can learn more about the area’s ecology from the Essex Field Club. Excitingly, both the Wat Tyler Centre and the Green Centre are committed to low-carbon schemes. Their woodchip boiler uses homegrown fuel, and a rainwater harvesting system provides flushing water for the toilets. A passive ventilation system is in place to save energy. Author Bio: Clive Rolison is passionate about protecting Essex’s green spaces through renewable energy technology. Essex law firm supports students

Model in the making

ENTERPRISING teenagers from Palmer’s College in Grays, who took part in Thurrock’s Next Top Boss competition have been given their own award by Essex law firm Birkett Long plus the offer of work experience. The firm which has 20 partners and is based in Basildon, threw down a challenge to test the brand marketing skills of three teams of 17-18 year olds who are studying the BTEC Extended Diploma in Business. Birkett Long chose a team called ‘Cerebral’ to go forward to to final after they came up with a new area of business the firm could diversify into - a careers advice service and skills development programme. While the team didn’t make the shortlist in the final, their work has won them praise from Birkett Long and staff presented Hajera Begum, Waheed Khan and Jay Lamb with vouchers and a promise of a day’s work experience. Jennie Skingsley, Associate and Marketing

Staff from Birkett Long with the Palmer’s College students

Manager at Birkett Long said: “Cerebral’s idea is something that would see us engaging with educational establishments and potential future recruits. They managed to create an innovative, but realistic, business that we could all see working for Birkett Long - it felt like something we would, and could do. They also focused on supporting their community which we liked and attempt to do as a firm through the activities we undertake.” Paul Bailey, Business Teacher at Palmer’s College said: “The challenge was perfect for our students to think creatively and deliver their solutions in various formats such as PowerPoint and video presentation. It has also given them the opportunity to research thoroughly as well as work in teams and delegate tasks to meet deadlines.” The annual Next Top Boss competition run by Thurrock Council challenges young people between the ages of 14-25 who are still in education to develop their talents and show employers in the region what they are made of.

PRESENTER OF THE WEEK

Phoenix FM has always got ‘That Friday Feeling’ Interviewing the stars, Nikki Mills with Pixie Lott

I

F you want to catch up with the latest chart music and find out what’s going on in local bars and nightclubs on your doorstep, tune into That Friday Feeling hosted by Nikki Mills between 6pm-8pm on Phoenix 98FM. Former University student Nikki, 23 who graduated from the University of East London with a First Class degree in Media Studies, first started presenting for Brentwood and Billericay’s local radio station during her gap year (between year 13 of 6th form and first year of university) in 2010. Interested in doing work experience, she approached Phoenix and ended up presenting her own weekly show. “I started by presenting a show called ‘In The Mix’ for three years which played a mix of old and new music and included celebrity gossip. Then from the beginning of August 2013, I took some time away from Phoenix to concentrate on my studies for my final year of university and then returned in October 2014 to host ‘That Friday Feeling’.” Working on Phoenix gave Nikki the knowledge and experience to create an

exert of a radio show on a fictional radio station for her university dissertation for which she was awarded with a First. During her time at the station she has had some amazing opportunities meeting and interviewing local celebrities. “The first ever interview I ever did on Phoenix was with Pixie Lott (who is from Brentwood) back in 2010. It was arranged to promote her then single Broken Arrow. Since then I have been privileged enough to interview her another two times, the most recent being on the opening day of her Italia Conti School in Chelmsford in October 2014.” So how does she find working on local radio? “It is full of positivity,” she says. “Local radio can also pull in and reach out to a wide ranging audience with the inclusion of various shows and topics such as specialist music shows, sport and health education. Phoenix FM plays a number of different music genres throughout the schedule which caters to everyone’s taste.” Nikki describes her weekly Friday show, aimed at 16-25 year olds, as ‘modern and up-to-date’. “I always play the latest chart music (Pop, RnB and Dance) and throw in a few old school songs from the 90’s onwards,” she explains. “As the name suggests (That Friday Feeling) I make it my mission

every week to give listeners That Friday Feeling and get them excited and in a good mood to enjoy the weekend. If they are planning on having a night out I like to think listening to That Friday Feeling is like a pre-party, playing music for listeners to get ready to and have a bit of a dance to – starting the night as they mean to go on.” Nikki has already achieved what many aspiring DJs would only dream of. It’s no surprise she takes inspiration from those who really engage with their audiences such as Kiss FM’s lively breakfast show trio Ricki, Melvin and Charlie and BBC Radio 1’s Scott Mills. But it’s Phoenix’s own Michelle Ward who she finds fits this bill too. “Michelle always makes me giggle when I listen to her on ‘Eat My Brunch’ especially when she goes off on a ramble or rant. She also has some interesting banter with the other presenters on air.” What does Nikki hope to bring to her listeners? “I hope I bring a smile to their faces and give them a boost after a hard week of work. Most of all, my aim is to gets people singing and dancing along to the tunes – just like I do in the studio! Cutting the mustard

Katherine Garner is a private chef, cooking class teacher, supper club host and caterer. She started her business, Mustard Seed, in 2010 and is passionate about all aspects of food. As well as running regular cooking classes, Katherine also runs Supper Clubs from her family home in Ongar, the next one is a ‘Mayday Supper Club’ on May 1st. Katherine gives us a sneak peak of just what she has planned for this unique dining experience!

S

PRING has well and truly sprung, hasn’t it? And doesn’t it warm the cockles of your heart? Once again we can enjoy days out in the garden, long light evenings pottering around the veg patch, sowing the seeds of the summer kitchen, harvesting the first of the new season delights. As the days get longer and the weather gets kinder we start to yearn for lighter dishes – enough of the warming winter stews and soups, enough of the cabbage, cauliflower, celeriac and other roots. Time for something fresh, leafy and green. Time to harvest the sea as well as the land, time for something zingy and vibrant to waken our tastebuds. So what is in season right now? (or coming very soon). New spring lamb is a treat, and rose veal, and rabbit. From our seas crab, sardines, halibut and salmon. In the fruit garden the rhubarb is pushing through, the gooseberries are on their

way. There’s still purple sprouting broccoli, but sorrel and spinach, watercress and spring greens join in, wild garlic flourishes in the woodlands, and it won’t be long before we have the first of the Jersey royals and asparagus. Put them all together and what have you got? A damn good excuse for a Mayday Supper Club! And that’s exactly what we’ll be doing here at Mustard Seed. Readers of Made In Essex may not be familiar with the concept of the supper club, so let me just explain what it is. A supper club is a cross between a restaurant meal and a private dinner party and we think of our supper club

as the heart of what we do. It’s our opportunity to welcome you to our home and serve you a fabulous four or five course meal, and your opportunity to have a great value night out, eat some great food and meet some new people. We’ve been running our supper club here in Ongar for nearly four years now but I know it is still a relatively unheard of thing in Essex. In London supper clubs are ten-a-penny of course, but you will be pleased to hear that attending a supper club in Essex is still a “leadingedge-dining-experience” type of thing to do. We don’t try to imitate a “fine dining” establishment, so you won’t find obscure ingredients and scientific experiments on your plate. But you will find great home grown or locally produced,

seasonal ingredients, cooked in a simple, classic style and presented with love. We describe our style as rustic and generous. The supper club evenings are held in our family home in Ongar. You are seated at long tables with other diners and there is a maximum of 20 places so you need to book in advance. Most supper club events are Bring Your Own (BYO), although we do offer a complimentary aperitif and serve Essex’s finest tap water. For MayDay I’m thinking crab must be on the menu, or maybe sardines with a wild garlic gremolata, or mushrooms stuffed with wild garlic pesto. Maybe baked duck eggs, fresh from our girls Lavender and Matilda, with new season asparagus to dip? There’s new spring lamb and baby vegetables in a light citrussy dressing? So many things to choose from which is why there’ll be at least four courses! I don’t want to leave out any of those fabulous new season ingredients. But don’t worry if

you have an intolerance to something. Even though it is always a fixed menu for supper club, we ask when you book about any special dietary requirements and we will cater separately for those. So what are you waiting for? If you want to know more you can visit our website – www. mustardseedcooking.co.uk/event/mayday-supper-club-friday-may-1st/ - or simply look on the events calendar on the home page. It’s Friday May 1st, 7.30pm and costs £30 per head. So if that’s all you need to know then get booked up. But don’t leave it too long – it tends to get booked up by the week before, by those in the know and regulars. In the meantime I’ll wander out into the garden and encourage the rhubarb to thrust skyward its pink stalks. And I’ll dream about maypoles and flowers, dancing and eating, and glorious MayDay ingredients. Spring clean your way to fitness! 10 calorie

W

ITH spring well on the way and bikini season looming, it is also the time of year when people may be considering a big spring clean. Now, it may not be the most exciting thing to do on a weekend, but it is a little known fact that you can burn over 2,000 calories just from sprucing up your house! So British Military Fitness (BMF) have put together a list of calorie busting chores, which can help you to burn off an impressive 2,200 calories, whilst also making your

busting ways to spruce up your home

home look great for the summer. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can slack on your regular exercise routine, but every little helps!

Sweeping

Grab that broom and sweep those floors and you can burn up to 136 calories in 30 minutes.

Dusting

Dust is a pesky little substance, which seems to get everywhere you can think of. But by cleaning it up, you can work off 170 calories in an hour.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming can be one of the more active chores and if you do the whole house, you can cover quite a lot of ground. You can also suction off up to 238 calories whilst you do so.

Washing the car

It’s easy for a car to get filthy without us noticing, but skipping the car wash and giving it a good clean inside and out can help burn around 153 calories.

Deep cleaning the bathroom Bathrooms can easily collect soap scum and mould, therefore a deep clean is necessary every so often. Also, you can burn up to 258 calories an hour by doing so!

Moving furniture

Fancy switching things around and moving some of your furniture? This can burn 200 calories in half an hour.

Mowing the lawn

You don’t need to be Alan Titchmarsh to be proud of your garden and simply by mowing the lawn you can make it look a lot neater, whilst also burning off 190 calories in 30 minutes.

Redecorating

If you fancy sprucing up your walls with a lick of paint, this can work off 334 calories per hour. These calorieburning chores won’t

transform you overnight, and if you’ve been cooped up inside cleaning all day, we would definitely still recommend getting active in the great outdoors afterwards to take in the fresh spring air! Tip Top skincare for the Summer Charlotte Nial owner of Cranwell House Skin & Beauty Clinic in Ingatestone, Essex gives her top tips on how to prepare for bikini ready skin

W

E are already thinking about Summer, and thinking about preparing our skin and bodies! Many of us use the Spring as the ideal time to start aesthetic treatments such as Laser Hair Removal, Dermabrasion, Skin Tightening, IPL Skin Rejuvenation, Skin Peels, Skin Needling, Non Surgical Face Lifting and other facial treatments in preparation for summer. At this time, we want to focus on deep cleansing treatments to remove those dead, dull winter skin cells and revive and radiate our skin. Many of us will also be experiencing increased sensitivity and drier skin by now, and need to deeply hydrate and repair our skin after the harsh winter elements. Exfoliation At this time of year, exfoliation is a very important step in your skincare routine to get rid of those dead, dull skin cells. Even though you shed 30,000 dead skin cells every minute, you still need to exfoliate! Try not to scrub your skin or exfoliate too often as it can sometimes be too stimulating. 2-3 times per week depending on your skin type is recommended. I recommend exfoliation treatments such as Skin Peels or a favourite

you have combated dry/dehydrated skin, it should start to look more hydrated, plumper and more radiant.

Charlotte Nial of mine is the revolutionary HydraFacial available at Cranwell House Hydration The changing weather combined with central heating makes our skin less able to retain moisture, your skin becomes drier and duller. Increase your water intake to keep your skin hydrated. Invest in a good hydrating product to keep your skin moisturised and to help repair your natural lipid barrier, which keeps moisture in your skin. Once

Drop the razor and invest in laser The Spring weather is now upon us. Before the hot Summer weather sets in, now is actually the perfect time to start laser hair removal! Soprano painless Laser hair removal available at Cranwell House, works by focusing an intensely concentrated beam of light energy into the hair follicle, in order to target the melanin, or pigment, in the hair. It works best on dark hair on light skin, and since there is less sun exposure than in the Summer months, you will get the best results from your treatment. Diet Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, and drink plenty of water. Try to avoid too much alcohol and caffeine as this really does reflect in your skin. Eat or Drink your skincare – natural dietary supplements are a great way to get vitamins and minerals into your skin, that you may be lacking in your diet. Tone Up Exercise is very important and will give your skin and body a health glow. Or why not try some skin tightening treatments ready for that Summer holiday! ReFirme™ Skin Tightening‬ treatments are available at Cranwell House for face and body areas including abdomen, upperarms and chest/ decollete! Comfortably achieve a more youthful, firm and toned appearance without downtime.

Hydra facial

Hydra facial ReFirme™ is a non invasive skin tightening treatment that uses a combination of infrared light and bi-polar radio frequency to safely heat the dermis (deeper layers of your skin) which affects dermal collagen. Collagen and Elastin depletion in the dermis result in

loss of dermal volume, laxity and sagging in the skin.

HAVE YOU GOT THE SPF FACTOR? Our faces are exposed more than any part of our body so it is vital to help protect it with SPF products. The golden rule is that if you want to keep your skin looking young and healthy and free of skin cancer, use a sunscreen every day regardless of the weather. Why is it so important to protect your skin from the sun and environmental damage? More than 90% of skin cancers are caused by the sun and sunscreens are a key weapon against this disease. UVA damage and free radical damage caused by the environment can destroy our collagen & elastin leading to premature skin ageing, skin cell membrane and even our cell DNA which can lead to skin cancer.

Sunscreen Tips • You should not use lower than an SPF15, which is suitable for darker skin tones. • If you have fairer skin and burn easily in the sun, you should use an SPF30 or higher. • Sunscreen does not work immediately once you have applied it. Your skin must absorb it before it can protect you. Allow 15-20 minutes for it to work before you set foot into the sun. • No sunscreen is effective for more than 4 hours. You must re apply every 4 hours. • If you take a dip in the pool or ocean or heavily perspire, make sure you re apply the sunscreen even if it claims to be waterproof!

LEARN TO… Ice Skate RATRTRTRQTQ

Try something new… Edges, Two Front Turns and of course my nemesis, skating backwards. One-by-one we all took our turns to

Hilary Collins unleashes her inner-Torville and Dean as she embarks on a nostalgic ice skating adventure

I

SAT with nervous anticipation at Riverside Ice Rink as I put on a pair of ice skates for the first time in fourteen years. Although I had spent my childhood on roller boots and had grown up dreaming I could be like Torville and Dean, I had never really learnt the fine art of ice skating. I was met by the very welcoming Patrick Matten, Head Coach at Riverside who informed me he was going to put me through my paces. Gingerly I took to the ice but felt safe immediately thanks to Patrick’s strong supporting grip. He started me off with a couple of laps of the rink teaching me how to point my toes out to create a nice skating motion and I soon felt confident enough to skate alone. However, the next steps to learn were much trickier than forward skating. My next challenge was to learn how to skate backwards – something I didn’t take to easily. Somehow it just seems wrong to go backwards on ice; it goes against all your human instincts, but one all ice skaters have to master, especially if they’re going to progress onto any dance moves. Tentatively I scraped my skates against the glistening ice as I slowly moved backwards. Eventually I reached the other side of the rink, there was no grace, style or sophistication like all the others gliding around gracefully, but at least I had reached safety, grabbing onto the edge. Time flew by and my 30 minute introductory session was finished. Patrick informed me of a coffee morning session that was about to follow and invited me to join in. The coffee morning group is a lovely bunch of people, who have a wide range of ice skating abilities, they meet once a week for a group session with Patrick and his very able Assistant Coach, Jennifer Brook. Here the group took it in turns to fine tune (or in my case, have a go) at improving their skating technique. Patrick instructed us how to do the Two Foot Slalom, One Foot Glide in a Straight Line, Forward Inside Edges and Outside

complete these moves, regular skater Paula Cornwell, 59, from Great Baddow was first to kick-off the Two Foot Slaloms and completed it with ease, which was rather daunting when it came to my attempt. Feet together I attempted to swivel my hips and gather some momentum, but although I reached the other end of the rink my performance would certainly not have earned a standing ovation of 6.0s. But the ladies in my group were so encouraging that I didn’t feel silly at all, and in actual fact although I was struggling, I was determined to try every move as I was enjoying the Torville and Dean life. We ended the session with Two Front Turns where you basically have to stand with your skates together and jump in the opposite direction – sounds easy? Well, in actual fact it wasn’t as bad as I had feared, although my brain and body seemed to be fighting with one another to get it done, but with eyes closed I managed it a couple of times, and of course the lovely ladies on the side lines were there to give me a well deserved clap! And with that we were off to eat cake and drink coffee together, which was fine, as ice skating I was told, should burn 450 calories an hour! Some top skating tips from Riverside’s Assistant Coach, Jennifer Brook: • Keep your knees bent and relaxed. • Always skate with your toes turned out. • Keep your arms wide and at hip level for good balance. • Take small steps to begin with. • Practise little and often and you’ll soon see a big improvement. • Take one-to-one or group tuition to learn all the technical moves, and to improve your skating ability.

Paula Cornwell, 59, Great Baddow, says: “I started coming to Riverside in September 2013 and took one-to-one lessons with Patrick. I really love it and the instruction is first class, and they really help you to develop at your own pace. I’m up to grade six now and have also joined the dance club on a Tuesday night and never miss a coffee morning either as I love the social side to ice skating.”

Gill Todd, 55, Martlesham, Suffolk, says: “I used to take dance lessons as a child and had been skating a few times in London, but I wanted to do something different now that my children have flown the nest. So, each Wednesday I pop my skates in the

car and I travel down to Riverside to meet my likeminded friends for a coffee morning skate – I love it!”

Warrior, prince, lover and rogue:

there is much to be said for the Essex man. What is it about the term ‘Essex Boy’ that makes you feel he is a new invention? In truth there is no more an Essex Boy than a Yorkshire Boy or a Suffolk lad. Men have been men from time immemorial and in her book Essex Boys, Karen Bowman has brought together the best and the worst historic men from the county and discovered them on balance to be a pretty interesting bunch.

T

HE men of Essex have battled Viking marauders; defied Norman warlords, sailed with ‘hearts of oak’ against the Spanish Armada and vanquished Napoleon on both land

and sea. A man of Science, Letters and Literature, the ‘Essex Boy’ has also burned for his beliefs, smuggled, swindled and seduced. A man of many guises, he has been both Gentleman and a Rogue, but in becoming either he has been able to have made choices. Karen Bowman’s first book Essex Girls was an insight into how women in the past were brought up to obey fathers and then husbands. Education was denied them and though a man may have wished to converse with his female companions or spouse, he rarely if ever, wished to hear her opinions. Men, on the other hand have always had the edge when it comes to liberty, challenged the world in which they lived. They were far-reaching and adventurous in both word and deed, not fearing the unknown but wishing to explore it. Adventure was to be embraced not avoided and the insurmountable was there to be tamed. A man was not so much by a woman’s side as striding ahead of her. Essex Men were no different and there is much to be said for him. It was an Essex Doctor who performed

one of the country’s first mastectomies in the 1800’s and the patient lived. Humphrey Repton landscaped some of the finest gardens in Essex. Warlocks Murrell and Pickingill bewitched Essex country-folk and Matthew Hopkins sent witches to their deaths. Dickens and Defoe captured Essex in literature and heads of great Essex families administered its laws and kept the county in order. The Saxon warrior Brythnoth is famed for losing a battle instead of winning it, on a point of honour and the men of the Peasants Revolt stood up for their principles.

Yet throughout, the Essex Boy was undaunted. Able to make something from nothing, go places from nowhere, find courage where there was none. Isn’t it iconic? Work is well underway to transform one of the capital’s most-loved buildings into the hub of a brand new community

T

here can be few buildings in London – particularly industrial ones – that instil as much affection in the capital’s residents and visitors as Battersea Power Station. Since it was decommissioned in the early 1980s, many Londoners will have looked on with despair as numerous ambitious plans to repurpose the iconic structure – including as a theme park or football stadium – fell by the wayside. With each successive aborted project, the Grade II listed giant fell into greater disrepair. Thankfully, some 30 years after it last produced electricity, the power station and the 42-acre site on which it sits are being transformed by a multibillion-pound regeneration scheme. The master plan, by New York-based architect Rafael Viñoly, provides nearly 4,000 new homes, 250 shops bars and cafés, three hotels, over three million square feet of office and commercial space, and new public open spaces. Work is surging ahead on the first phase, located between the power station and the Victoria railway lines. The chimneys – among the most recognisable features on any city skyline in the world – are being brought down and carefully rebuilt to exacting heritage standards. One of the chimneys has already been completely removed, and when its replacement has been assessed, the other three will follow and their brand new doppelgangers will restore the building to its familiar shape by the end of 2016. All this, along with the wider Nine Elms regeneration scheme going on around it, will be served by a new extension to the Northern Line and a proposed new bridge over the Thames to Pimlico. Thames Clipper services will also stop at the jetty in front of the power station, utilising the river to offer speedy links east and west. Battersea’s reputation – somewhat unjustified – as being difficult to get to will certainly have to be reappraised when these are all in place. The Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) says it aims “to build a strong, robust and sustainable community” on the site, which will encompass over 560 ‘affordable homes’ and encourage local, independent businesses to make a vibrant and individual new ‘high street’ that won’t be swamped with

all-too-familiar brands. Public leisure facilities will include a six-acre park that opens up the riverfront and Thames Path riverside walk. There will also be public squares and recreation areas across the site and the power station’s northwest chimney will incorporate a transparent passenger lift and 360-degree viewing platform over 100m above ground, which is sure to be a major tourist draw. The power station building will also house an entertainment zone and 2,000 capacity auditorium. Residents will have an even wider range of amenities to utilise. There’s a 5,000-sq-ft Residents’ Club that will include a bar, private dining, library and cinema while many of the residential blocks will incorporate a communal roof garden for the exclusive use of those who live there, each offering far-reaching views across London. BPSDC has enlisted a team of world-class architects to provide a new range of draw residents and visitors to this new community. Big names such as dRMM, Wilkinson Eyre, Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners will each bring their own distinctive creativity to different phases of the site with some truly striking buildings and spaces. For example, the centrepiece of Gehry’s project is an angular tower called The Flower while Foster + Partners have commissioned the designers of New York’s High Line urban park to landscape a 355m roof garden on their building. So far, three phases of properties have been released at the development. At Phase 1, the Ian Simpson Architectsdesigned Circus West, only penthouses remain for sale, priced from £7m. At Phase 2 – the power station building itself – two-bed apartments start at £2.75m, while at Phase 3, Frank Gehry’s Prospect Park and the Foster-designed Battersea Roof Gardens, prices for a one-bedroom property start at £1.006m. The first residents will move into Circus West next year, along with the first wave of shops and amenities. The Northern Line Extension, which will connect new stations at Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms to Kennington, is set to be ready by 2020 and the whole regeneration project is scheduled for completion in 2025. “Catch 22 – Should I Sell First or Buy?” One of the greatest frustrations associated with moving house in the current market is that you might feel somewhat exposed if you sell your own property before finding somewhere to move to. It is reported that nationally, estate agents take an average of fewer than one new property onto their books per branch, each week. Although we enjoy a much greater supply of properties than this here in Brentwood, it is easy to see why sellers become nervous at the general lack of supply. Many who receive a good offer for their home turn it down because they have not yet found “the right property” and worry that they will in effect become homeless should they sell first (although we have never known this to happen!)

Ardleigh (nr Colchester) - £299,995 The Home Partnership Land & New Homes are delighted to be marketing this BRAND NEW GATED DEVELOPMENT consisting of 5 luxury homes. If everyone were to take this stance, and the entire market would grind to a halt! However, in really it isn’t that bad, and whist we don’t have a magic wand, the closest thing we have to a miracle cure is to encourage sellers

to have a little faith – as soon as you find a buyer, your whole circumstance changes. First, the fact that you have a buyer in place positions you as a “red hot buyer” with estate agents. This means you will be offered new properties as soon as they come onto the market, often ahead of public marketing or portal exposure. Secondly, you are in a much stronger negotiating position when you do find a property you like, meaning that you are preferred to other buyers who may be in a weaker position. Thirdly, you may well find that once you are psychologically committed to your sale, you’ll have a clearer focus on which house would actually suit you best. It’s easy to “umm and ah” when there’s no pressure! So if you need help making a decision, find a buyer for yours first! And of course, we’d be happy to help on that front as well!

HE following must-see-now’ destinations are all on the verge of dramatic change and therefore should feature top of any avid travellers tick list. So ensure you get behind the scenes before they change forever.

Where: Nicaragua

Why now: Plans to introduce a new canal across Nicaragua will change the landscape and lifestyles of the people in the country dramatically. After a century-long Highview Lodge Sunrise Lodge controversy, the government has given the go-ahead to the Nicaragua Canal, a project that plans to link the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and is proposed to be three times as long and almost twice as deep as the Panama Canal. Construction of the canal began in December 2014 with a completion date in 5 years. It’s an earth-changing engineering venture of epic proportions. Environmentalists have warned of the canal’s irreversible effects on the local environment especially Lake Nicaragua, the only freshwater lake in the world that contains oceanic animal life, including sharks, swordfish, and tarpon. See it the Rickshaw Travel Way: The ‘Land of the Volcanoes’ Nicaragua itinerary encompasses the soaring volcanoes, gorgeous colonial towns, lush rainforests and wide sandy beaches of this beautiful country. It begins amongst the colonial facades of Granada before taking time out on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua. From there travellers journey north to the coffee plantations of Matagalpa and Experience life ‘at home with the Nicos’ in San Ramon.During this homestay option guests spend the night with a local Nico family in their modest house and encounter the local culture and food. In the evening guests roll up their sleeves and help prepare the family meal before everyone sits down to eat together. The homestay is also part of a community based project, which puts much needed funds back into the local area. The next stop in Leon allows travellers to experience the art and culture of the city before flopping onto a beach at San Juan del Sur and finally experiencing the grandeur of Masaya volcano on a unique evening excursion. A 13-night trip costs from £1,385 per person and includes transfers, accommodation with breakfast and excursions. To build an individual Nicaragua holiday, travellers can choose from a range

of bite-size Nicaragua trips or combine with trips to Panama and Costa Rica

Where: Indochina and The Mekong River

Why now: Experience life along the Mekong River and the surrounding landscapes of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam before the construction of the Xayaburi hydroelectric Dam in Laos is completed. The dam is seen by many as a threat to fish spawning, food supply, wildlife and a way of life in parts of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. See it the Rickshaw Travel Way: Create a very special voyage along the mighty Mekong River. From Vietnam’s floating markets and a Vespa tour of Ho Chi Minh City’s delicious street food vendors to ‘Lending a hand in Hue’ where guests can try their hand at traditional fishing on the Perfume River and cook lunch with the locals. It’s also possible to stay with a remote Cambodian Hill tribe and experience life on the Tonle Sap Lake with a Khmer family in a traditional, simple stilt house. Rickshaw Travel offer many wonderful ways to experience life along the river with the people that live it and know it best. Combine three or more bite-sized trips to create an individual voyage through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos or select from a series of recommended Indochina itineraries.

Where: Cuba

Why now: The new rules and eased restrictions on travel and access to Americans has raised questions and concerns on the impact this will have on Cuba’s old world charm and character. It can’t be said for sure what the future of tourism will hold in the country but those that wish to see Cuba ‘as we know it’ should travel soon. See it the Rickshaw way: Mi Casa Tu Casa. What better way to experience Cuban culture than stay in a Casa Particular - the home of a Cuban family. The family prepares breakfast in the morning and guests have their own key so they can come and go as they please. The trip begins in Havana where guests are transferred by classic American car to their hotel in Latin America’s largest colonial city centre. The vintage cars, abundance of music in the air and bustling plazas make it feel as if you’ve stepped back into the 1950’s. From Havana travellers head to the rolling tobacco hills of Vinales, hike through the coffee fields of Las Terrazas and take in

The Taj Mahal is best viewed at sunrise or sunset. The ‘Sunrise at the Taj Mahal’ trip encompasses a number of World Heritage Sites that all rank amongst the most amazing places on Earth. Bharatpur, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, and (last but not least) the Taj Mahal can all be appreciated on this rare journey Nicaragua between Jaipur to Agra. During this India trip guests will visit the mystical monkey temple of Galta, watch huge flocks of birds fly across the Bharatpur wetlands, wander through the abandoned ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri and explore the magnificent Taj Mahal. These hideouts overlook the lakes used as watering holes by sipping gazelles and occasionally patrolled by majestic tigers on view for a lucky few. This India trip costs from £225 per person and includes 2 nights accommodation in a luxury tent with breakfast and two gamedrives.

Where: Peru, Machu Picchu

Why Now: Next year a 3.5km cable car is planned to link the village of Tingo Nuevo to the ancient pre-Inca city of Kuelap, coined as ‘the second Machu Picchu.’ Tourism is expected to explode in the area impacting local lives and making the remote settlement accessible to all. Kuelap is considered one of Peru’s most significant archaeological sites after Machu Picchu and development will greatly affect the remains of this ancient civilization. The intended cable car aims to ease the burden on Machu Picchu, which limits the number of visitors and requires reservations to hike the famed Inca Trail, but this new development will draw many thousands more tourists bringing both opportunity and loss. Shopping in Chelmsford at the weekend isn’t what I would call a relaxing experience. But once your shopping is done and your bags are brimming with goodies head to Chop Bloc for some well earned respite, says Charlotte Civil Head chef AlexanderLopez Rocha

Chop Bloc

ESTLED just off the bustling High Street in Brewery Yard this impressive steak house is located in an 18th-century grain house and brewers. Before you even get inside there’s a nod to what to expect menu-wise with huge chumps of steak hanging in the window reminiscent of a quirky Tate Modern exhibit. Set over three floors decor is industrial-chic at its very best with wooden floors, exposed brickwork, vaulted beams and drop-down lighting and original warehouse meat hooks hanging above big squishy booth-style seating and long tables. Metal grill-style cabinets dotted around are filled with fine vintages. The restaurant is the creation of brothers Steve and Dave Patten who together with the help of their father meat industry pioneer and liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Butchers, Colin Patten, have reared the Chop Bloc vision to ensure impeccably sourced meat is the star ingredient at this this US-style steakhouse. Chop Bloc specialises in prime cuts of beef. Diners can choose a cut, sold by the gram including including bonein beef, select the weight they want

and how they want it cooked - Rump, Fillet, Sirloin, Rib Eye or for those who like it large - T-bone - all cooked over charcoal to your preference Whether you’re just popping in for a cocktail in the sleek Bloc Bar on the top floor or a slap up meal in the restaurant - the choice is yours. But, the latter is certainly the most desired option especially if you’re a lover of a good steak.

I opted for the Chop Salad with Rump steak and was presented with a towering salad with baby gem, peppers, corn, mushroom, great beans, egg and lemon dressing combined with huge slices of steak. But I wasn’t getting out of trying one of their prime cuts of meat and during my meal Manager Aaron brought over a huge slab of rare-tomedium cooked premier cut steak to try - it was out of this world! The burgers too are to die for- Made using 28-day matured British chuck steak and cooked using the traditional 1940s American ‘smash’ technique to create a cruse on the outside while leaving a juicy burner on the inside. Choose from Double Cheese Burger, Triple Cheese Burger or how about the signature Chop Bloc Cheese Burger? Choose from a great selection of side dishes - the Truffle Parmesan Fries are a must. But, if you’re not a meat eater - fear not! Chop Bloc caters for you too. They have salads including Superfood and the Chop Salad which can be paired with halloumi cheese, or prawns. There’s some great fish dishes from Whole Boneless Roasted Sea Bass to Pan Fried Salmon - whatever your choice you won’t go hungry.

IFTEEN Members of Parliament from across Essex helped Visit Essex launch the Live Local, Love Local campaign to encourage residents to explore, experience and enjoy this beautiful and fascinating county. The county’s MPs were invited to visit their favourite location within their constituency and help spell out the campaign’s theme. The destinations chosen reflect the fabulous breadth and diversity of attractions and venues throughout Essex, from Upminster Windmill to Colchester Castle. George Kieffer, chairman of Visit Essex, the official tourism organisation for the county said: “Our objective is to promote tourism, increase visitor numbers, and generate income for Essex tourism and hospitality businesses.’’ As part of the celebration, special offers are available at visitessex.com/livelocal with more than £500 of money-saving vouchers. In 2014, nearly £1million of additional business was generated for the county from tourism. The event coincides with English Tourism Week 2015 (March 14-22), a week-long celebration of events and activities across the country. “We’ve been delighted by the response from our MPs,” said Mr Kieffer. “They’ve chosen quite an eclectic mix of destinations in which to be photographed with their letter. Each location reflects the rich diversity of great days and nights out right across Essex – there’s never been a better time to discover this very special place outside your front door.”

T

HE Ford Focus has been the best-selling family hatch for many years and last year it came second in the overall sales stakes, only beaten by its little brother, the Fiesta. The Focus range is extensive, covering everything from the basic Studio model to a sporty ST model and available in either hatchback or estate guise with six trim grades and a variety of petrol and diesel engines. It has just undergone a facelift with most significant changes to the front, which now has a more distinctive chrome grille, narrow headlight and certainly sharpens up the styling and gives it a lot more visual presence. On test was the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel in Zetec trim with an on-the-road price of £19,495. This new diesel powerplant is more efficient than the 1.6-litre one and has a power output of 120PS and a low CO2 of 98g/ km, making it car tax free. Inside the cabin has been given an extensive makeover with an all-new dashboard.

By

CHRIS MANNING Material quality is improved with soft-touch plastics very much in evidence and the blue-lit instruments, including the heater control panel give it a cool look in more ways than one. The central instrument binnacle contains speedo and rev counter plus fuel and temperature gauges and the dual trip computer allows two sets of information to be stored of journey time and overall fuel consumption and the one that most people find most useful, how many miles to an empty tank. Out on the road the Focus delivers a comfortable ride with good handling prowess. The seats are supportive and with rake and reach steering wheel adjustments I soon found a comfortable driving position to enjoy the Focus. The 1.5-litre diesel is quiet from start up, but I did notice a slight droning noise at a

particular point in the rev range on some occasions while driving. It has enough power to make it enjoyable, with its 270Nm of torque propelling it to a 0-60 time of 10.6 seconds. Official fuel consumption for diesel engine is 74.3mpg on the combined cycle, but in real-life motoring on a mixture of town and A-road/motorway driving it returned an average of 58.4 mpg while on test. Standard equipment on the Zetec is good and includes distinctive chrome finish on upper door line, electric and heated door mirrors, air con, remote central locking, front fog lights, Ford SYNC including Bluetooth phone operation and voice control. My favourite feature is the Quickclear heated windscreen, which I wish was standard on all cars as a safety feature. Safety items abound with ESP with traction control and emergency brake assist, a plethora of airbags plus tyre pressure monitoring system and Hill Start Assist.

TEST DRIVE Ford Focus

MyKey is a further safety feature, which allows owners to programme the ignition key, aimed at young drivers, to inhibit incoming phone calls, restrict top speed, reduce the volume of the audio system and disable the car if driver and passengers are not wearing seatbelts. Two items that I did miss on this Zetec-trimmed Focus (and shows just how you get accustomed to them being standard features) was rear parking sensors and cruise

control. For those two items you would have to upgrade to Titanium spec. One option that was included on the test car was Ford’s innovative Door Edge Protector. At £85 this is very worthwhile addition in my book, as it saves the leading edges of all four door being damaged against walls, other cars etc. A simple mechanical device, a plastic trim protector slides into place as you open the door and retreats again as you close it.

Toyota unveil hybrid RAV4 with 4WD

T

OYOTA has opened a new chapter in RAV4’s enduring success story with the unveiling of the first RAV4 Hybrid at the recent New York International Auto Show. The new RAV4 Hybrid AWD represents the next dimension in Toyota’s application of full hybrid technology. Its smooth and efficient powertrain combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, with an additional motor powering the rear axle to deliver electronic all-wheel drive. The AWD capability provides greater safety and stability when negotiating low-grip surfaces, It also provides a towing capacity of 1,650kg, with Toyota’s Trailer Sway Control system providing added security and peace of mind. The unveiling of the hybrid coincides with the announcement of the new RAV4 range which features new exterior styling, improved cabin quality and further deployment of advanced technology and safety features.

RAV4’s new frontal design generates a stronger road presence and includes full LED headlights for the first time. To the side, there is a new panel that creates a more flowing look, and at the rear the combination lamps and bumper have been reworked, adding yet more emphasis to the car’s road stance. The sensory quality of the cabin has been raised significantly with the adoption of a new full colour TFT screen and soft-touch materials. New technology features include Toyota’s 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor, which gives the driver sight of obstacles that would remain hidden in blind spots when using conventional front and rear cameras, making for safer and easier manoeuvring. RAV4’s safety specification is significantly improved with the addition of the new Toyota Safety Sense suite of features. In addition to the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist features

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

that will also be included in the package for new Avensis and Auris this summer, RAV4 will further benefit from Adaptive Cruise Control and two significant enhancements to the basic Pre-Collision System functions. Firstly, the PCS will operate at an extend relative speed range – from

6 mph up to the vehicle’s maximum speed – and will be able to reduce speed through automated braking by about 24 mph. Secondly, the system will be able to detect potential collisions with pedestrians, in the event of which automated braking will operate at

Prices revealed for all new Vauxhall Viva VAUXHALL’S all-new five-door entry-level model Viva will arrive in showrooms in the summer priced from £7,995 on-the-road. The Viva range consists of two trim levels: SE, and SL which is a trim name carried over from the original Vauxhall Viva. There will be air con and ecoFLEX versions of the SE trim, giving customers a choice of four well-specified models of SE, SE Air Con, SE ecoFLEX and SL. Both Viva trim levels feature a high level of standard equipment. Tyre pressure monitoring system, city mode steering, lane departure warning, cruise control with speed limiter and front fog lights with cornering function are standard. Class-leading technology including ESP which features traction control, cornering brake control, emergency brake assist, straight line stability control and hill start assist are also standard across the range. All Viva models also feature six airbags, AM/FM radio with aux-in and steering wheel controls, electric front windows, electric/heated mirrors and remote central door locking. Achieving 65.7mpg combined and 99g/km, from its 1.0-litre 75PS petrol engine, the Viva SE ecoFLEX gets a front lip spoiler, extended rear spoiler with LED brake light and ultra-low rolling resistance tyres over the entry model. It is priced from £8,170 on-the-road. Priced from £9,495 on-the-road, SL trim features electronic climate control, Morocanna seat trim, leather steering wheel and 15-inch alloy wheels. An online survey by the UK’s leading car supermarket found 97.4% of people quizzed agreed that drivers should be able to stay beyond the mandatory two-hour free parking period at motorway service stations – without incurring a penalty. Over 2,400 people took part in the poll on the Motorpoint website – www.motorpoint. co.uk. Currently anyone who overstays the two-hour limit at the majority of motorway service stations is liable through the use of ANPR cameras for a fine of up to £100 – regardless of whether the driver of that vehicle is asleep, ill, incapacitated or the car has broken down. Mark Carpenter, managing director of Motorpoint, said: “It is ironic that we are constantly being told to ‘take a break because tiredness kills’ and yet whenever we decide to stop and rest, maybe have a snooze, we face the prospect of being fined for oversleeping. “We completely understand that motorway service stations need to make a profit but penalising motorists for parking for more than two hours is definitely not the answer – as the results of our website poll clearly show!”

RENAULT car sales in March were up 15% on 2014 reaching their highest level since March 2010 according to official figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Sales of 15,868 cars in the month resulted in a year-to-date first quarter performance of 20,593 Renault cars – the best start to the year for the French car brand in five years and 16.6% up on the first three months of 2014. Renault car market share in March stood at 3.2% – up 0.25 percentage points on March 2014. Renault’s B-segment range, comprising of the Clio hatchback, the Captur crossover and the 100% electric ZOE rose by 65.9% during

2014 and are continuing to outpace the market in 2015 too – sales of the three models were up 9.2% to 15,299 vehicles significantly outpacing this sector of the market. Sales of Renault’s electric vehicle range, comprising of ZOE, Twizy and Kangoo Van Z.E., rose by 147.5% in the first three months of the year compared to 2014 with 401 vehicles sold. Its strong start to 2015 also extended to its van range which saw first quarter sales of 5,477 vehicles, representing a market share of 5.5% – up 36.7% on 2014. The Renault Group, which comprises Renault cars, vans and Dacia, has experienced an unprecedented period of growth over the last two years.

Clarets win again to relegate Farnborough

G

OALS from Joe Ward, Mark Hughes and Mason Spence helped Chelmsford secure a 3-1 away win at 10-man Farnborough as the host’s relegation was confirmed. Results elsewhere meant that Farnborough would be heading out of the Conference regardless of this afternoon’s result, but after Magnus Norman saw red midway through the half the writing was on the wall for the home side. The Farnborough stopper received his marching orders after bringing down Hugo Skepelhorn in the area with Joe Ward smashing home the resulting penalty for his 10th goal of the season. Courtney Fearn was forced to take the gloves with no substitute goalkeeper available, but it wasn’t until midway through the second half before City doubled their lead through Mark Hughes’ delicate chip. The points were secured when Mason Spence smashed the ball past the stand-in Fearn minutes later with Jamie White’s long range effort late on coming as mere consolation as Farnborough come to terms with playing in the Ryman League or Southern League next campaign. Sticking to his promise of giving some of the younger members of the squad a chance in

the latter games of the season, Mark Hawkes made two changes to the side that started against Bishop’s Strotford with Hugo Skepelhorn making his full debut following his goal last Monday. The lively looking Skepelhorn was full of running early on as he tried to make the most of his first start for the senior side and should have made it two goals in two appearances when he skipped clean through on goal only for Magnus Norman to parry his effort away. However Norman’s afternoon would only last a further three minutes as Skepelhorn again found himself clean through on goal – beating the offside flag – and was cynically brought down by the Farnborough goalkeeper who saw the red card from the referee. With no sub on the bench, midfielder Courtney Hearn took the gloves with his first duty being to face Joe Ward’s penalty which was confidently smashed into the top corner to put the visitors in front. Despite Hearn not being a regular goalkeeper he proved up to the challenge of wearing the

Ruthless Hammers on song THE Vortex Lakeside Hammers delivered a ruthless performance last Friday with a 62-28 victory over Swindon Robins. The Hammers set their marker from the very start, dominating the opening three heats. Mikkel Bech continued his return to form, scorching from the gate in heat three, whilst Richard Lawson hunted down Zengota and passed through when the Polish rider picked up too much grip on the exit of bend two. Edward Kennett entered the Arena in the 4th heat, and was chased throughout by Zengota before taking the flag. With the Hammers 14 points up, Scott Nicholls was introduced as a tactical ride by the Robins, but he could do little to stop Kennett and Bech delivering another maximum heat advantage. Jonsson gated in the 7th, as Lawson battled with Morris for all four laps but was unable to take advantage. Nilsson got the better of Zengota in the following heat, after the Swindon pair had led from the gate, with Ellis keeping the Pole honest until

bend 3 of the first lap. The Robins finally took a heat victory in the 10th race, when Nicholls reached the first corner ahead of Bech. Lawson, at the back for the entire race, showed his perseverance sneaking 3rd from Fricke on the run in for the line. Heat 11 then saw the away team take their first maximum heat advantage, when Nicholls and Morris gated, despite the best efforts of Jonsson to pass throughout the race. Adam Ellis and Ashley Birks took their second 5-1 in the re-run of the second reserves race, after

Bates binned it exiting the second bend in the first attempt. This scoreline was quickly followed by a further Jonsson / Lawson maximum heat advantage, with the Hammers captain showing again great speed in front. Heat 14 saw a huge first bend from Kennett and Bech, sweeping Zengota out towards the fence, before the Hammers pair sped off for another 5-1. The Hammers wrapped up the meeting in the nominated race, with Jonsson and Beck again gating ahead of Zengota and Nicholls, who was forced to retire after a tight back straight tussle. gloves, stopping Ward from making it two by tipping away his deflected effort moments after the deadlock had been broken by Ward’s 10th of the season. With the half time whistle looming Farnborough were fortunate not to be down to nine-men going into the break after Ward latched onto a loose ball before appearing to have been brought down by Darryl Siaw in the area. The referee blew with the majority assuming he was about to brandish his second red card of the afternoon, only for him to reach out for his yellow card to book Ward for simulation. Now with nothing to lose Farnborough were on the front foot in the opening stages of the second half and Michael Richen’s went close to levelling only to be denied by Lovelock on the line. Lovelock was then called into action just past the hour mark to deny Jamie White from close range, but moments later Chelmsford increased

their stranglehold on the game after their returning captain, Mark Hughes, made it two. Skepelhorn’s ball from the right flank was dummied by Michael Cheek in the centre leaving the ball to run perfectly into the path of Hughes who coolly lifted the ball over the onrushing Fearn to extend City’s lead. The three points were then confirmed less than 10 minutes later when substitute Rob Girdlestone’s burst down the right resulted in a ball into the danger area, and after a poor clearance from Farnborough fell to another substitute, Mason Spence, he compounded Farnborough’s misery by lashing the ball in from close range. With Hayes & Yeading winning 2-0 at home to Bath the result was effectively irrelevant for the home side, but they did managed to grab a consolation late on when White let fly from distance to find the bottom corner with three minutes remaining. Defeat slips Blues back to fourth BRENTWOOD missed the chance to clinch a Ryman North play-off spot after they failed to capitalise on a dominant first 45 minutes in Norfolk on Saturday. Blues were without the suspended pair of Ryan O’Rawe and Alex Akrofi but with the strong wind behind them they were soon on top with a Sam Bantick free kick forcing a good save from home keeper Andy Wilton. Brentwood then had a penalty appeal for hand ball in the 27th minute and this eventually led to manager Adam Flanagan receiving a red card for comments to the match referee. But almost immediately after Flanagan had left the dugout, Brentwood went into a deserved lead. Stanley put through Shad

Ngandu, who was denied by another save as Wilton came out, but Bantick followed up to smash home the loose ball. Cleverly, using the wind to his advantage and with the defence expecting a cross he nearly caught out Wilton with a swirling shot but the keeper recovered to turn the ball onto the crossbar. Wilton was soon in action again after Stanley showed excellent control before putting Ngandu through once more. Wilton saved again and gratefully grasped the loose ball as Ngandu tried to score from the follow-up. However, the first half ended

in disappointment for the visitors when, three minutes into stoppage time, they failed to clear properly and Luke Tuttle hit a fine shot inside the post from outside the area. And the game turned round completely just 60 seconds into the second half when Liam Wales got clear and skilfully lobbed Ollie Bowles to put the Deres ahead. Brentwood could not repeat their first half domination against a much-improved Dereham side in the second half and with few chances at either end, the Norfolk side kept their own play-off hopes alive with a vital three points. Brentwood slipped back to fourth place in Ryman North after his setback but with a game in hand. MARTIN VOLLER

Victory eases the pressure on Romford ROMFORD started well and Joe Scott twice went close inside the first three minutes. The visitors had a chance but failed to hit the target on 15 minutes and then ten minutes later Loui Hazelwood fired over the bar. Jack Barry had a long distance drive saved before Loui Hazelwood’s powerful effort was beaten out to Joe Scott. Right on half time Jamie Dicks’ deep cross was headed down by Joe Scott but Nick Reynolds’ shot was well saved. Thamesmead took the lead

on 54 minutes when a forward mishit his shot, but saw it fall kindly for his team mate Bude Anidugbe who rifled the ball home from the edge of the area. Romford needed a quick response and it only took them nine minutes to find an equaliser when a huge ball forward by Nathan Cooper found Jack Barry in the penalty area and he headed down to Nick Reynolds who saw a gap

and drove the ball accurately past the keeper and into the corner of the goal. On 77 minutes Romford earned a corner that was crossed into the box by Abs Seymour where Jack Barry headed down towards goal. Nick Reynolds controlled it with his back to goal before turning the ball home with his left foot to give the Boro a crucial lead. With other results going their way Romford moved out of the bottom three and fate is now firmly placed in their own hands. GARY REDWIN

Leopards on track after victory over Dragons

L

EOPARDS kept their double hopes alive with an 82-76 victory against Bradford Dragons at a packed out Brentwood Centre, on Sunday. The win in the play-off quarter-final sends them through to the Final Four for a record-breaking fifth successive season and they will face Kent Crusaders at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Saturday with the winner facing either Derby Trailblazers or Manchester Magic in the following day’s final. Crusaders have been the Big Cats bogey side this season, winning three of the four meetings – with home court advantage being key in all four games. The young Crusaders’ team were in contention for the league title all season before finishing fourth in arguably the tightest Division One race in history. Coached by former Leopards’ player and assistant coach Lloyd Gardner, Crusaders have two former Big Cats in John Steel and Duane Orija who helped them win the treble in 2012. There was little choose between the two

Sweet taste of victory for Jets WOODHAM Radar Jets have finally accomplished that elusive win will a well deserved victory over Ravens Youth Gliders. The Ravens came out fighting with a team lacking in substitutes and with a goalkeeper looking a little nervous in goal. They had the first corner of the game which was ably defended by a confident back three of Jake B, Nathan W and Marcello. Down the other end Daniel’s pass back found Ethan whose volley went over the crossbar nearly beating the Ravens’ goalkeeper. It was definitely end to end stuff. Jack in the middle of the park played a lovely ball to Haydn who was unlucky not to hit the target, but it was Ravens Youth however who were first on the score sheet with a long range volley that Ben had no chance of saving. The Jets, as they do, continued to battle. Jake B and Nathan W making some timely tackles. Haydn made some darting

moves forward with some accurate passing between Jack and Daniel making sure that the Jets piled on the pressure. Shaun and Daniel came off to allow Jake D and Nathan F to take the battle to Ravens Youth and the pressure continued. The Jets were unlucky not to have a penalty as there was a clear handball in the box but within minutes this was forgotten with Jake D getting the equaliser just minutes before half time much to the supporters’ elation An injury to Nathan F allowed for a quick water break and once back up, great play saw Ethan pass to Nathan F whose first class shot rebounded off the keeper only for Jake D to follow through with his second. Half time and the Jets were leading and full of confidence. They came back on and continued to put pressure on Ravens Youth but it would

be fair to say that during the second half both keepers had very little to do. Shaun came back on for Jack and immediately played a part with a well taken throw on that eventually resulted in Haydn being pulled down and a free kick given. The three man wall were powerless against Haydn’s shot which went over their heads and he was unlucky not to find Ethan’s head who had come running in on the left hand side seeing an opportunity for goal. It was all hands to the pumps as Ravens Youth continued to look for the equaliser and you could feel the nerves both on and off the pitch for the last five minutes. The defence continued to hold solid helped in equal measure by Haydn and Ethan with Jack joining the fray for the last few seconds of the game. Woodham Radars Jets are: Ben, Marcello, Jake B, Nathan W, Jake D, Ethan, Haydn, Jack, Shaun, Daniel, Nathan F and Sophie.

team in Sunday’s game but once again Leopards stepped up in the final four minutes – outscoring the visitors 14-6 to seal the game. Leopard led 18-15 at the first break before seeing their advantage trimmed to 39-38 going into the locker room at halftime. Led by 23 points from American guard JP Davis, the visitors weren’t going away quietly and outscored Leopards 22-18 in the third period to take a 60-57 lead into the final break. They were still 70-68 ahead with four minutes remaining when Dave Ajumobi sunk a trey off Albert Margai’s assist and the hosts never let that lead slip. Courtney Van Beest made it a three point game with a jump shot, and Ajumobi increased the margin to five with 1:47 remaining.

Miguel Lorenzo Leis gave his side hope with a three-pointer with 91 seconds remaining before Ajumobi split a pair of foul shots. Van Beest put his side five up with 42 seconds remaining but Bradford had one last push as Davis converted a threepoint play to make it a two point game 20 seconds from time but fittingly it was captain Margai who sunk the free-throws that sealed the win. Ajumobi led a balanced scoring effort with 22 points and eight rebounds, with Richards adding 14 points and Margai finishing with 13 points and five assists. Will Ashby shook off a quiet first half to hit three big treys in a 12 point haul while Van Beest missed out on a doubledouble by a single rebound having added ten points. Following the game the Big Cats were presented with the Division One trophy and medals by Brentwood Mayor Vickie Davies and Brentwood & Ongar MP Eric Pickles. DAVE RYAN

CROSS COUNTRY

Champion for a second year ABIGAIL Ives won the recent Essex County Primary Cross Country Championships. She had qualified comfortably in the preliminary round which had been held recently at Thorndon Park. Often very nervous before a race, Abigail seemed calm and quietly confident. She was put under pressure from other competitors from the start but by 500m she was in front and in control. The second place runner hung on producing a couple of bursts, but she was unable to make an impact on the lead Abigail had built up. It is an achievement to win one race but Abigail, who attends Woodlands School, Great Warley, has now completed her second Cross Country season unbeaten. Abigail defended her title at the ISA National Cross Country Finals in Rugby in February. Abigail represented East Anglia and won first place overall for the second year running. To compete in the ISA National Finals contestants ran regional races to which the top 10 in each race went on to the finals. Abigail came first in the East Anglia heat and went on to win the overall ISA Finals.
