BONE & JOINT CENTER

PROBLEM The Holland Bone & Joint Center website was outdated with content, photography, and not mobile friendly. The center had then obtained a new area: the sports medicine department, thus bringing on board a new doctor to the field.

SOLUTION By creating a more fresh, modern design and friendly interface, the updated website brings a sense of trust to the users, along with updated content and usability. Visit: hollandboneandjoint.com for the full, function website.

The Bone & Joint Center offers non-surgical treatment of joint pain, sports injuries, and concussions, as well as procedures for hip and knee replacement, making this practice a unique experience.

BONE & JOINT CENTER / WEB RE-DESIGN

An audit of the old website was conducted to pinpoint which areas needed improvement and updates.

Icons and buttons appear outdated.

Set margins gives the website a constraint appearance, making it appear outdated. Navbar needs updated content.

Akward placement of navigation.

Photos have an older, darker appearance. Content is crammed, not giving other sections room to breathe.

Minimal call to actions.

Sidebar changes inconsistently on each page with content that doesn’t pertain to that topic.

Typography isn’t strong or engaging.

Content needs updating as some of the doctors are no longer present.

Too much information is crammed, making it unorganized.

What are the symptoms of a concussion?

It is highly important that coaches and parents alike understand the symptoms of a concussion. Athletes with a concussion may try to “tough it out” if the symptoms aren’t terrible or may not even notice any issues right away.

BONE & JOINT CENTER / WEB RE-DESIGN

AND I DARKEN CAMPAIGN

PROBLEM The Conqueror’s Saga first book, And I Darken, is based on the historical figure, Vlad the Impaler which takes place during the Ottoman Empire reign. This book gets overlooked because the cover misleads the reader about what the story is actually about, and the design is similar looking to its competitors.

SOLUTION A new cover redesign creates visual interest by the type of story being told. Characteristics of the historical art and style depicted in the Ottoman Empire reign are used to simulate this time period. With multiple marketing touchpoints expanding outside the scope of a bookstore, promotional items will increase new interest.

KAYLEE MADDOX | DESIGN PORTFOLIO

The first sales pitch is the cover, and because most people judge a book based on its cover, it can dictate if a purchase will be made or not.

BOOK BROWSER Primary User Motivated by going to a book store and having the experience of physically selecting a book and inspecting its condition.

Original Cover

“I never know what book I want to buy. I just mainly browse and see what catches my attention.”

1

3

2

2

DIGITAL BUYER Secondary User Motivated by convenience and “what you may also like” suggestions. Purchasing digital copies saves room on the bookshelf.

3

“I don’t have that much room on my shelf, and buying e-books are cheaper than physical books.”

1

3

1

GENERAL RESPONSES • I typically browse and see what books catch my attention. • Titles catch my eye first before I notice the imagery. • If the cover looks boring then the story must be boring.

1

“Most of the book covers are dark, they blend together, and look the same.”

2

”Covers that are similar looking make me believe the story is the same, even though that may not be the case.”

3

“I don’t like people on the cover because it ruins my image of what the character should look like.”

AND I DARKEN CAMPAIGN / RE-STAGING

The cover redesign takes aspects of art and style during the Ottoman Empire reign.

Goudy Old Style is used to replicate the type being used during the time of the Ottoman Empire, which is when the story takes place.

Title uses Centaur MT Std Regular. The thin and thick strokes simulates that of Islamic calligraphy.

Dragon looming over the city symbolizes the main character’s quest to conquer the Ottoman Empire.

KAYLEE MADDOX | DESIGN PORTFOLIO

E-books save bookshelf space, are easily portable and more durable than physical books.

Their home in the fortified hill city of Sighisoara was a far cry from what he deserved. It sat next to the main gate, in the suffocating press of the square, beside an alley that reeked of human waste. His retainer of ten men was merely ceremonial, rendering him a glorified placeholder. He might have been the military governor of Transylvania, but was supposed to be the ruler of all Wallachia. Perhaps that was why he had been cursed with a girl. Another insult to his honor. He was in the Order of the Dragon, sanctioned by the pope himself. He should be the vaivode, the warlord prince, but his brother sat on the throne, while he was governor of Saxons squatting on his own country’s land. Soon he would show them his honor on the end of a sword. Vasilissa lay on the bed, soaked in sweat and moaning in pain. Certainly the weakness that took root in

Pulling elements from the book jacket, the app provides quick information on the people, the locations and the author’s journal/inspiration behind the book.

Users can travel across the map to get a better sense of the world and to learn about how these actual places were influential to the real historic figures.

*WAVES* WELCOME EVERYONE!

Creating the world of the Conqueror’s Saga wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for my husband, Hot Stuff. He introduced me to the iconic historical figure, Vlad the Imapler, who was from Transylvania. I know, who would have thought that place actually exists. But it’s real, I swear—I have pictures to prove it. I thought as you read through the book, you can check back here to see where all my inspiration came from, and if I’m really as crazy as Lada. I’ll let you decide on that part.

IN 2010, MY HUSBAND AND I VISITED Romania. Noah (and yes, I’m not going to pretend

anymore like the internet can’t figure out his name simply by opening one of my seven books) had lived there for two years, spoke the language fluently, and was deeply in love with the country, its people, and its history. I joined him in that love. If ever there were a country designed to feel your inner creative soul, Romania is it. We stayed in seven hundred year old buildings, visited fortified churches and castles, and kept running into the old stomping grounds of this dude.

We saw the castle where he was held captive by his own allies.

Vlad Tepes, aka Vlad the Impaler, aka the prince so historically notorious Bram Stoker based Dracula on him. (Yup, Transylvania is a real place. We stayed there. It’s blow-your-mind beautiful.)

PROBLEM Busy professionals, health conscious individuals and families need a place where a multiple array of healthy, fast and delicious food is served. The environment needs to be spacious and relaxing to appeal to the diverse user needs.

SOLUTION Celebrity fitness trainer Gunnar Peterson and food guru Jamie Oliver have teamed up to create an open space system that appeals to the busy consumers who want to eat healthy. The Fresh Choice Market is a friendly environment where people can pick from nine different food stations all under one roof. The spacious environment allows for personal space with no time restrictions.

February in Jamie’s Garden

Total: 675

by Pete Wrapson | February 18, 2017

February gets a bad rap, unfairly so, in my opinion. Yes, it is still winter and yes, it can sometimes be dreary and grey, but prolonged periods of cold are rare these days that the season can be seldom actually as bad as we expect. Snowdrops and daffodils are now in bloom, there’s cherry blossoms, the evenings are getting noticeably lighter and birds are already trying out their spring songs on the, sunnier days. February does give reasons to be cheerful. Of most significance to the cook is sprouting broccoli, a keenly anticipated mainstay of this lean period. We eat the immature flower shoots and young leaves, known as ‘spears’, of which there are both white and purple types. They are more slender and tender than the chunky heads of green broccoli sold yearround in shops – which, in any case, is really called ‘calabrese’ because of its ancient association with Calabria, the region that

FERRIS STATE KIOSK

PROBLEM A few kiosks are placed around the Ferris State University campus. The interface is very basic, giving only minimal information. Students hardly use them, or were unaware that they are interactive, while others didn’t even know they existed.

SOLUTION To create a more interactive experience that will catch the attention of people walking by with an inviting display. The kiosks covers most questions users would like answers to, with easy navigation and accessibility.

One of the fliers catches their attention. It mentions to be on the lookout for campus-wide kiosks that are valuable for information and resources.

Giant kiosks use large buttons to help people know they’re interactive. Here, questions can be answered without needing to ask for assistance.

Large kiosks are designed specifically for how users can get the most out of the experience. This is done through layout, reach and eyesight.

IAMS CAT FOOD REPACKAGING

PROBLEM Can cat food packaging is a messy product. Having to carefully open the metal lid without spilling contents is tricky. Having to buy multiple, single cans of the same kind can add up, and take up a lot of space in the cupboards. Scooping the food onto dishware can be wasteful, not only by trying to scoop everything out but also because the cat may not want to eat it all in one sitting.

SOLUTION Utilizing a seven day meal plan all in one convenient container eliminates the mess, the storage space, the left over dilemma, and the ever so entertaining chasing of the bowl around the room

KAYLEE MADDOX | DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Guerrilla interviews were conducted to better understand what cat owners go through when feeding their furry companions.

PROBLEM Finding time to shop for groceries when most people have such busy everyday lives or can’t physically do it themselves, can be challenging and time consuming.

SOLUTION S-Mart is a service app provider that allows a runner to do the actual shopping for someone else in a timely manner. The only thing the user has to do is create a shopping list and wait for their groceries to be delivered by an Uber driver.

ALA KART / APP INTERACTIVE DESIGN

Storyboarding creates a genuine story about real people that would have a need for S-Mart app. These provide real problems and realistic solutions.

Just getting home from an exhausting business trip, Jake remembers a co-worker telling him about a shopping app called Ala Kart where groceries are delivered to your home. He reads the reviews, and decides to give it a try. He fills out his information and creates a shopping list.

Steph, already shopping for herself and roommate, receives a new notification that a man named Jake needs groceries to be delivered within the hour.

Accepting Jake’s order, Steph starts scanning each of Jake’s items. With a divider in the cart, she places his items on his section of the cart.

Suddenly Steph realizes the store is out of ripe bananas, an item Jake wanted. In the app she selects the ‘out of stock’ button, where Jake receives a notification. With only five minutes to either cancel that item or swap with a new, Jake changes his order.

Jake responds quickly, saying he would like raspberries instead. Steph proceeds to find the new item and make the substitution.

At the checkout, Steph makes an S-Mart Uber request. With a driver five minutes away, she selects ‘ready for pickup,’ and the app notifies the Uber driver. She proceeds to checkout.

The Uber driver sends an alert to Jake to notify him that his groceries have arrived. The driver drops them off, and leaves to complete another delivery.

Inside his home, Jake is able to complete his transaction by indicating all of his groceries had arrived. He receives an app request to rate both the runner and the driver. Satisfied, he rates them highly.

MINDSHARE

PROBLEM The Student Advancement Foundation (SAF) was in need of a fun and thoughtprovoking theme for the 2017 MindShare event. The foundation needs the community of Grand Rapids to help invest in educational opportunities, in which all students can learn, develop and thrive.

SOLUTION Even though the MindShare event is about embracing and helping the Grand Rapids School system, the design team wanted to create a special tribute to the people in the community who help make that happen. The concept of UNITE is bringing people together to help create a strong and unbreakable foundation for years to come.

KAYLEE MADDOX | DESIGN PORTFOLIO

By understanding what the Student Advancement foundation stands for, and what is expected from the design team, a memorable event was executed.
