INTERZUM

a glimse into tomorrow Highlights from the ‘world’s leading’ interior and furniture design fair, attracting industry leaders from around the globe to showcase their latest developments in material manufacturing and innovation, inspiring the future of retail design.

[RE] GENERATION Leading printing technology company Toppan, implement big changes to make their business, and consequently the work of their clients, more sustainable. Through their sister company Decotec, a well renowned creator and supplier of the decorative foils used to transform MDF board into a substitute for hard wood, Toppan supports companies in their efforts to make their furniture more environmentally friendly by investing in new manufacturing technologies. As well as reducing their own emissions and landfill waste by 95% by 2020, Toppan introduces to Interzum their Smart NANO product range with improved scratch, stain and moisture resistant properties, helping to extend the lifespan of the products we buy, with the intention to reduce landfill waste.

If that wasn’t enough, they are now able to manufacture the same great materials but instead with biomass, limestone and recycled PET, reducing the use of petrochemical and a number of limited resources by up to 60%. The improvements to the quality and sustainability of these materials offers great opportunity to improve the impact that the retail market has on the environment, allowing designers to continue to create innovative and desirable products that satisfies the high demand of the consumer market whilst having a smaller impact on the environment. As well as making great improvements to the sustainability of their products, notably Toppan’s Decotec have identified that, as Toppan’s Decotec have identified that, as fashions sell

products, to lead the market into a greener future, more sustainable wood alternatives must start to become commonly recognisable within market trends in order to change consumer perceptions. For example, despite their being a variety of more sustainable materials such as eucalyptus and bamboo, popular materials like oak, pine and plywood currently dominate the market. As a result, Decotec have developed a range of Eucalyptus foils in multiple finishes, proposing a cost-effective way for large retail design companies to incorporate more sustainable materials into their ranges with the hope to attract consumers and familiarise them with the aesthetics of these new materials, pathing an outlet for them to be used more frequently in the future.
