EDITOR'SLETTER TT TER E S T A B L I S H E D

July’s issue of LOWRIDER magazine comes fully equipped with all thrills and no frills. In this issue we’re featuring a very elegant gold ’58 Impala that’s powered by a zesty ZL1 Camaro powertrain, while the other car featured on the double-car cover is a pastel pink bubbletop owned by a significant other. In total, there are eight car features in this issue and they all offer varying degrees of creativity that are sure to inspire and become a topic of conversation. Our lifestyle coverage in the issue features an art exhibit in Arizona, as well as a visual tour of AutoRama, which shared some cool Kansas City lowrider culture. From there, we jumped over to the 5th Annual Axalta Lowrider Custom Paint Class. The event, which went down at the Universal Technical Institute in Long Beach, California, invited 20 of the best custom painters and ’stripers in North America and they gave us tips and pointers on how to lay down intricate designs and patterns. In addition,

we pay a visit to automotive interior designers, California Upholstery, and check out some of their latest creations that are stitched to sheer perfection. As I close off this editor’s letter, I would also like to talk about the introduction of our “Roll Models” series, which is presented by Quaker and Shell Oil. The segments, which were created to shed new light on lowriding, did just that, and so much more. The outpour of positive comments and feedback was beyond our expectations, and this time we’re back with another segment that is sure to please. In closing, I just have to say that the lowriding scene IS NOT making a comeback. To say that our culture is making a comeback means that the scene had disappeared—or went somewhere—but it’s never gone anywhere; we’ve been here this whole time. Now it’s time to expand its reach, give it a different light, and expose the culture for its beauty, enthusiasm, and creativity. So help us out and let’s all shed positive light on an automotive 6

cultural experience that’s here to stay. From hunting down parts to searching for hard-to-find accessories, lowriding is truly an incredible experience that comes with plenty of trials and tribulations. But in the end, the relationships that are forged within this community are based on the admiration and respect of a culture that is built on tradition, history, and cultural influence. I’d also be the first to admit that the scene has had its fair share of drama, but that’s a necessary evil in any industry that contains this much passion and that much love. But in the end, most of us set aside our problems and continue to enjoy the fervor, the passion, and the culture that revolves around camaraderie and cars. In closing, please do your part to spread the word about the culture you’ve helped create. Ride responsibly, but make sure you always ride LOW. Joe Ray

WHO WOULDN’T LIKE A 556HP SUPERCHARGED ’58?

LOWRIDER.COM

In our Dec. ’15 issue, our cover car was a '61 ragtop owned by Tanya Maxwell, wife of Ultimate Hydraulics owner Vernon “V-Max” Maxwell. Going back another two years to our Dec. ’13 issue, we featured V-Max’s '58 Impala ragtop in its previous guise. So when Tanya’s ride was finished off with a supercharged LS9, he couldn’t have her showing him up with a faster car. Time to go all in and

give the '58 a makeover. Originally this car sat in the backyard of V-Max’s friend for roughly 15 years. With enough persistence, eventually V-Max’s friend caved in and sold him the car. Although it was in rough shape, it wasn’t beyond salvaging and was eventually given an onyx black finish and fitted with an LS3. Now it was time for a brighter color and more horsepower.

For suspension, the previous 9-inch was removed and replaced with a Currie rearend as well as CPP air ride, CPP tubular A-arms, and a full set of Wilwood disc brakes. The older motor was exchanged for a new Chevrolet Performance LSA. It’s hooked to a 4L60E trans and is also fitted with MagnaFlow exhaust, along with Lokar cables, Optima batteries, and components from Airaid and Aeromotive. With over 500 horses, it really didn’t need anything else. Remington whitewalls on 14x7 original Daytons makes for the perfect rolling stock. For color, V-Max went with an Axalta fawn that was found on the '64 models. It took eight months to dress the '58 in its new clothing, but V-Max assures us he’s done and just enjoys 16

A nod must be given to the crew at Ultimate Hydraulics for their work on the car as well as Brad Rogers and Louis Castillo. PHOENIX’S ANNUAL ART SHOW FEATURING TOP PHOTOGRAPHERS AND ARTISTS STORY BY HECTOR LEVYA

FOR YOUR TICKET TO THE SHOW - GO WWW.LOWRIDER.COM

The dynamic trio of Rudy Salazar, Mando Aldama, and Chuck Serna of Phoenix did it again. Their annual Lowtography Art Show featuring the lowriding community’s top photographers and artists was once again the must-attend show of the year. Having outgrown its previous location, Lane Splitters Garage was the perfect venue for attendees to enjoy a full day filled with lowrider cars, motorcycles, vendors, and, of course, art. An entire city block was closed down to accommodate the 50-plus motorcycles and Phoenix car clubs, like Spirit, Klique, Los Boulevardos, Slow Lane, as well as Los Angeles’ own Lifestyle Car Club. The street was littered with vendors like Low Down and Dirty, Working Class Cultura, Paint and Hope, and SugarMill Studios of Las Vegas. The main attraction, of course, was inside. Straight Razor Barbershop and Supreme Seventies created a contrasting background to the artful displays of Ron Hernandez, Albert of Vicious Paint, and Bugz Gonzalez of Bugz Auto Art. Photography exhibits, included entries all the way from Japan, courtesy of Fisheye Photography. Los Angeles representatives included Saul Vargas, Jose “Flikazo” Ortiz, and even Superiors of Orange County made the trip with Mike Gonzalez’s recently completed Harley-Davidson “Home Wrecker.” Each year this event gets bigger and better. One can only imagine what they have in store for us next year. See you in Phoenix. 18

MISSOURI’S LOW RIDES GO UP ON FULL DISPLAY

BY JOE RAY

The Championship Auto Shows produce the largest car show series in the automotive business. Better known under the monikers of AutoRama or World of Wheels, there are close to 20 events held annually across the United States and Canada. Though hot rods and the competition for the Ridler Award are always at the heart of each show, in recent years the composition has expanded to include more custom lowriders on their tour. Houston,

"KANSAS CITY’S VERY OWN LEGENDARY CAR BUILDER BLAS LEDEZMA BROKE OUT WITH A SATIN AND SLAMMED '49 BUICK ROADMASTER..." Salt Lake City, and even Omaha are on this year’s list, as well as this issue’s featured coverage of Kansas City’s AutoRama where the spacious venue, Bartle Hall, recently hosted hundreds of custom cars, classics, hot rods, trucks, motorcycles, and of course the Lowrider Nation all under one roof. In addition there were many feature exhibits and several celebrity guests, like Danny “The Count” Koker from Counting Cars, who was in concert Saturday night with his band the Counts 77. Also getting rock star type of attention was an immaculate white '57 Cadillac Eldorado Seville, chopped top Mercs, and a '65 convertible De Ville on jackstands, putting Minnesota on the lowrider GPS. Kansas City’s very own legendary car builder Blas Ledezma broke out with a satin and slammed '49 Buick Roadmaster, and as always, the Viejitos Kansas City chapter brought

There were many different car club show cars exhibited and represented well at this show, and though everyone looked like a winner, the Editor’s Choice award went out to a '64 Impala rag from SouthSide. The unity amongst the Lowrider community has been brought upon by the sincere guidance and blessings offered by none other than the man known as the “Preacher.” Though he once again displayed his two beautiful rides in support of the show it was with a heavy heart, because his wife was also gravely ill, and after the show she died. God bless her and may she rest in peace; we’re sure many prayers went out from the good friends gathered around her. Besides the car show's attendance also being huge for this three-day weekend event, the crowd was very much attracted to the LOWRIDER exhibit area where the

"THESE AUTO SHOWS PRODUCE THE LARGEST CAR SHOW SERIES IN THE AUTOMOTIVE BUSINESS. BETTER KNOWN UNDER THE MONIKERS OF AUTORAMA OR WORLD OF WHEELS." LOWRIDER Rig and a couple of L.A. cars were also showcased. Kansas City has a very humble and passionate Lowrider community that really cleanses the soul. If I thought that the love I have for lowriders could not be matched, I was wrong. Kansas City doesn’t take lowriding for granted, despite the weather, economy, and lack of hydraulic shops, body and paint shops, and even interior shops. Their belief and passion for our culture is remarkable. It doesn’t come easy like out here on the West Coast, they have to try harder to prove their passion. That’s why their state is called the Show-Me state, because as I witnessed, they do. 26

BLACKED-OUT THEME HARLEY-DAVIDSON SOFTAIL DELUXE

BY JASON GARDNER

MOTORCYCLE

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SOFTAIL DELUXE

Travis Bielert has been into custom cars for as long as he can remember. Growing up he loved lowriders and Harleys so when it came time to build a Harley it was only natural that

he would build it with a Cali Vicla style. Having previously owned an old-school shovelhead bobber he found himself wanting something more comfortable and dependable for those long cruises, 28

so it was off to the Harley dealer for a brand-new Harley Softail DeLuxe. For most people in the Harley world chrome is king, but Travis wanted to stand out from the crowd and went

against the norm and came up with a blacked-out theme. With a vision in mind, the seven-month journey from average cruiser to major head turner began. The first step toward giving the bike a lowrider style was building a full front and back air suspension. Rather than ordering an aftermarket fender and tank Travis went to work on putting his own custom touch on the stock parts. Countless hours were spent stretching, molding, and smoothing every piece on the bike. Both front and rear fenders were stretched and molded to add to the lowrider look he wanted. Having done virtually all the work up to this point with his own hands in his garage Travis was now faced with the one aspect he needed help with: paint. After asking friends for recommendations and talking to several different painters, Travis decided to load his tins on a pallet and ship them to a painter across the country in California he discovered through Instagram. With a few instructions on a basic color scheme, painter Jake Blancas was given free reign and set free to get creative. Final assembly brought about a series of challenges, including where to mount the compressor for the air ride, a custom saddlebag solved that problem. After countless hours over a very fast-paced, seven-month build, Travis’ only regret is that he didn’t have another bike to ride while this masterpiece was built. 30

IT WAS REGRET THAT LED DAVE EDADES TO BUILD THE '63 IMPALA OF HIS DREAMS BY HECTOR LEVYA

1963 CHEVY IMPALA CONVERTIBLE

The ’90s were an unprecedented time for lowriding. From music videos to movies, it seemed as if mainstream media was finally embracing our culture. It was this national attention that led to influence many youth who might not have otherwise been exposed to the lowrider community. Such is the case for Dave Edades who, while seeing the iconic movie Boys In the Hood, immediately knew he would one day own a '63 Impala convertible. He would soon make his dream a reality and after a few upgrades to his recently purchase convertible, he found himself cruising just like Ice Cube had done in the movie. Active military duty would soon come calling and only after a few years of cruising he decided to sell his beloved Impala … a decision he would soon regret. That feeling of regret would eventually lead him to search for another '63 Impala convertible. Only this time, with the help of a few longtime friends, he was going to do

a complete frame-off restoration and “build it right.” The project’s first step was to take the original 327 smallblock engine and give it a breath of fresh air by adding a Billet Specialties serpentine pulley kit, dual fans, a two-speed powerglide transmission, custom dual exhaust, and Edelbrock accessories. This was all done with

the help of Danny Gonzalez and Carlos Ponce, owners of G-Spot Customs in Las Vegas. From there, they would cover the car in a Caramel Brown pearl. Gary Jensen, a pinstriper in Las Vegas, then laid down some gold leaf and pinstriping to accent the vehicle’s body lines. While FM Plating was busy chrom-

'48 SUBURBAN WAS A TRADE UP BY BETO MENDOZA

Lorenzo Angel Garcia was raised in San Jose, California. His mom gave him a '72 Chevy Caprice when he was 8 years old—yes 8! “I couldn’t do anything with it at the time, it mostly just sat there until I got older,” Lorenzo explains. “I got rid of it when I was in high school.” Lorenzo had traded his Caprice for a running '68 Cutlass. This

would be his first trade of many more to come. “I’ve had about 45 cars. Whenever I get tired of the car, I go out and start looking for trades. I began with a ’70s car and I’ve worked my way down to the ’40s. I could have been in the ’30s by now but my dream car is '41-47 convertible.” He was able to pick up this Suburban

by trading a fully patterned '47 Fleetline Fastback he had. “The Fleetline was in great condition but I feel like my chances of getting a convertible are greater with the Suburban.” The Suburban already had the root beer brown paint and candy tangerine top. “It was pretty clean but I knew what it could look like by adding my style to it.” He began by adding triple gold Zenith and a hydraulic setup. Lorenzo then had fellow club member Pete help him out by adding patterns and ’flake to the Suburban. Pete used Candy Tangerines and Candy Pagan Gold to add multiple tape shades and patterns to the top. “I was speechless with the work Pete did in four days but I still felt I had to take it to one more person to add the final icing on the cake.” That man was Carlos Lima, San Jose’s legendary painter from the ’70s. With full creative freedom to do what he wanted, Carlos pulled out his brushes and laid out yellow and red fine lines throughout the entire body as well as gold leafing. During our shoot, Lorenzo was in the middle of a deal to trade this Suburban for an all-original '47 convertible. If he does get it, he plans on having it fully patterned, juiced, and on Zeniths. We wish him luck on the deal and can’t wait to see his vision on it.

RESCUING AN ’85 BUICK REGAL FROM A LOCAL TOW YARD Since 1903, Buick has been embedded in the American culture and, although at times taking a backseat to the big brother Chevrolet and little sister Ford, Buick’s innovations, cutting-edge designs, and a pursuit of luxury performance has sustained

this iconic brand for over a century. The craft of modern luxury, however, is not exactly what came to mind when Nasario “Nash” Moncayo, of Perris, California, came across this '85 Buick Regal at a local tow yard. With a fascination for cars that goes 40

Peter and Paul, of Top Notch Customz, would also give this car its signature look by spraying a unique blend of PPG Root Beer brown with Gold metallic pearl throughout the body, as well as undercarriage. Mike Lamberson would later add accenting pinstripe lines. Mark Lopez, of Elegant Upholstery, was called upon to cover this full custom interior in Sandcastle Brown leather, adding a five-color combination pattern running down the seats as well as custom door panels. The Art of Sound in Upland, California, upgraded the audio system with an Alpine head unit and coaxial two-way type-r speakers throughout. With a Nardi steering wheel in place and custom billet grille installed, it was time to visit Charlie, of Wire Wheel King in Campbell, California, who made a set of custom anodized gold 13x7 reverse wire wheels just for this project. With a little over a year to complete this project, Nash is proud of bringing this Buick back to life. He is now able to truly say that this is “craftsmanship at its finest for Empires Finest Car Club style.

MAKING HIS VISION OF OWNING A LOWRIDER A REALITY

BY VOLO

Since he was a teenager, Joe Guzman of Anaheim, California, has always wanted to own a lowrider. He knew it would take time and a lot of hard-earned money to make that vision a reality. With patience and of course some persistence, the right car at the right time and place presented itself to Joe in the 2004. Good friend, Shawn, told Joe about a ’62 Impala that was for sale in the nearby Buena Park. Joe decided to

go see it. Once he laid eyes on the classic car, he knew it was the one! After bringing it home, Joe eventually had the car painted a light green and did some basic upgrades to the ride to get it to that lowrider style he liked. However, after a few years, an idea sparked in his head to take his Chevy hardtop to the next level. He decided to do a complete makeover on the ride, totally repainting it with a candy green finish,

custom patterns, flake, pinstriping, leafing, and eye-popping murals. The interior also received quite a makeover: dashboards and custom center console received paintjobs to match the car’s exterior, and the seats and

door panels were reupholstered with brand-new green vinyl. There is no doubt that this ride is ready for pulling some awards at car shows, but that won’t stop Joe from cruising it on the streets from time to

Joe gives thanks to everyone involved with helping him build this car, especially Alex Placencia at Big Al’s Body Shop. Joe says it was Alex who was always there for him when he needed help with this ’62. Joe may be done with the car (for now), but he says he has a convertible ’62 Impala in the works, so be on the lookout for that very soon!

The build was in full swing and while Royal Plating in Tucson was both polishing and chroming all 49

the original metal trim, Roger of Wicked Whips was called upon to bodywork and spray this Bel Air’s signature Turquoise Blue paint. The original 235 engine was then rebuilt and upgraded with factory power steering. With a front and back lowered suspension the set of 13-inch, all-chrome, 100-spoke wire wheels bolted right up. With the brand-new Kenwood audio system way past 10, it was time to hit the switch on the power convertible top and cruise down that open Arizona desert highway. “I want to give a special thank you to my wife who continues to support me during past and present builds, and thank her for always leaving the checkbook open,â€? JULY 2016 LOWRIDER

Where would we be without our ladies? It’s asking a lot for our significant others to tolerate this obsession (err … hobby, we mean), much less support it. You know you found a keeper though when one not only encourages it, but sinks her teeth into it as much as you. Danny Torrez met his match when he married fellow lowrider Nicole. After many years together Danny decided to build his better half the car of her dreams. Although many might argue that a pink car isn’t masculine, we’d have no problem

parking this one in our driveway. Hey, if Elvis could rock a pink Cadillac, there’s no reason any man wouldn’t be proud to own this lovely '61 bubbletop. Danny put the word out that was the year he was looking for and upon finding a suitable candidate, immediately began blowing it apart for the mods to come. The frame was boxed with 3 ⁄16 -inch plate, molded, powdercoated pink, and patterned by Danny’s friend Carlos “Coast One.” Custom trailing arms and a wishbone suspension were

A stronger Toyota rearend was added as well as Caprice spindles and disc brakes with an RAB Performance master cylinder and booster. Deep-pocketed lower A-arms for bigger coils, a CPP steering box, and a quartet of Daytons with Zenith knockoffs keep the rolling stock going strong. Two Hop Shop competition pumps in the rear and a one-piston pump for the front keep the juice flowing through hardlines with 1⁄2 -inch fittings. Eight-inch front cylinders with 14-inch rear cylinders, three Adex dumps, nine solenoids, six group 31 batteries round out the hydraulic package with pink anodized and engraved blocks. A crate 350 was prettied up with some RAB Performance acces-

sories, a Professional Products Power Plus manifold, Edelbrock 600-cfm cam, and tied to a 700R4 trans. The body was kept true to stock by Oscar Ruvalcaba and that beautiful PPG pastel pearl pink was done by Gilbert Acosta and is based on a shade of nail polish that Nicole liked. WHAT’SABUBBLETOP? S U O ? Although it was a short-lived styling touch of the early ’60s, the bubbletop basically only existed in 1961 and 1962. These cars feature a dome-like roof with large, curved rear glass and windshields, as well as curved pillars. In 1962 they were discontinued in favor of the “crinkle” top, which resembled a convertible at first glance. Bubbletop '62 Bel Airs equipped with a 409 are very rare and command big bucks. Only the '62 Bel Air two-door hardtop had the bubbletop body style, while the Impala coupe had the new convertible-look hardtop. The Bel Air four-door sedan of 1961 had the “flying wing” roof, but as unusual as the '61 Bel Air four-door hardtop was, the real oddball of the '61 Chevrolet lineup was the two-door sedan, the only year that the Impala was ever available in that body style. Other GM makes and models featured a bubbletop as well during the same years.

"... IF ELVIS COULD ROCK A PINK CADILLAC, THERE’S NO REASON ANY MAN WOULDN’T BE PROUD TO OWN THIS LOVELY '61 BUBBLETOP." 6x9s in the rear, a 10-inch Alpine Type R subwoofer, and two 51⁄4 inch Alpine Type R speakers in front. A Flaming River column is about the only other thing outof-the-ordinary inside the '61, but the rest is stock. Although, like most cars,

there are more details to come in the future, Nicole and Danny get to enjoy their ride and turn heads at many car shows. Special thanks also go out to Abel Rueda, Kevin Olso, Kita, and the rest of the USO members for their support. 60

Miguel Cazares of Santa Clarita, California, attended car shows with his brother when he was a kid. He knew back then that one day he would build a show vehicle of his own. He purchased this Escalade from Felix in Downtown L.A. with

the original intention being to use it to haul another truck he was working on. As time went by, he changed his mind and began working on this one instead. The first thing he did was purchase 28-inch wheels for it. The real 62

After it came out of the shop with a new look, Miguel decided to do some work to the 6.2L engine. He painted the cover to match and then added a K&N intake and a redtop Optima battery with an engraved battery cover by Tommy Castanera. THE WORLD OF CUSTOM UPHOLSTERY BY HECTOR LEVYA

Bob & Sons, Ron Mangus, Gabes Custom Interiors … all these names are synonymous within the custom upholstery world. And although all are legends in their own right, Joe Camacho of California Upholstery is stitching up quite an impact! From their innovating designs to the endless number of cars that are currently out on the street displaying their one-of-a-kind, highly sought after interiors. With assembly line precision, their interiors roll out of the Bell Gardens location as if it were a Detroit factory. It was the early ’80s when Joe Camacho found himself working alongside his father, Jose, at their family upholstery shop, cutting and sewing everything from couches to the everyday original interior. As time grew, business ideals between them would eventually push Joe to pursue his own personal goals. “Dad wanted to keep doing traditional

work and I wanted to do higher-end projects,” Joe says. So with a one-bay shop, Joe was off and running, taking in everything from original install kits to full lowrider projects. “Because I had limited space, I had no choice but to finish these cars as quickly as possible,” he says. It was here that his assembly line productivity was born and still continues to this day. Twenty years later they still do things the same way. As the clientele list grew, so did the shop, allowing Joe and crew to serve some lowriding royalty, such as Southside, New Movement, and Lifestyle car clubs. It would become commonplace for a car to go from his shop directly to the vehicle’s cover photoshoot. Eventually, California Upholstery’s popularity would lead them to work for A-list celebrities, such as Gerardo Ortiz, David Beckham, The Game, Topo “The Wide Body King,” as well as many a Dub car. 67

“When I first started, all I wanted was to create interiors that I would want to be seen in and drive,” Joe says. And with interiors ranging anywhere from $2,000 to $12,000, he has made it affordable for anyone to own one of his unique creations. With a system in place that will not allow them to fall behind, and with longtime workers, such as Santos Alonso (who has been with him for over 20 years), you can bet Joe will keep his word when it comes to completing a car. “Truth be told, it is my sister, Grace, who runs the day-to-day operations. She is the real brains behind this operation. I don’t know how she coordinates all of this,” he says. “With over 15 estimates to write a day, I really don’t know how she finds time to do it all. We couldn’t do it without her.” With a minimum threemonth waiting list, make sure to call and reserve your spot today. Joe and family are waiting to hear from you.

Representing California Upholstery.

Wrapping up the lowrider interior industry.

What is the biggest change you have seen when it comes to upholstery? Nobody wants original or traditional interiors any more. Even the once-sacred '58 is getting complete custom interiors that are hot-rod inspired. Who was your biggest influence? Javier of Mexico Collision was the first to give me complete artistic freedom. During my single-bay days, he would drop off a car at 6 a.m. and would pick up the competed version at 6 p.m. What would you like to see change? The painters always take all the credit and money. It seems as if the majority of a project car's budget always goes to the paint, with the remainder going to the interior. I’m glad to see more and more car owners using their budget to help push the level of fabrication and design. How has social media impacted your business? It has become a platform to showcase our work, serves as free advertisement. It is also a way to keep our customer updated with the progress of their cars.

RUSTED METAL FLOOR PANEL REPLACEMENT TEXT & PHOTOS BY JOE RAY

70

JULY 2016 LOWRIDER

Not all projects we begin start off with perfectly rust-free and dent-free metal. This was definitely the case when we really starting digging into our '53 Chevy pickup truck build. Once we got the cab all stripped down to bare metal we discovered a number of problem areas that would need to be cut out and replaced with fresh new metal. And for this we called upon Brothers Truck Parts, one of the leaders in replacement parts for Chevy trucks. For this installment we focus on the replacement of the lower rear cab corners, which are a very typical area for cancerous rust holes. They always manage to be a catchall for any type of debris over the years and just rot away the metal. We also address the truck cab’s floorboards with toeboard pieces that were mangled up from years of abuse and holes from where a different chassis had been mounted underneath. Luckily Brothers Truck Parts came to our rescue and were able to supply all of the necessary replacement pieces to return our cab foundation to its original factory glory. 1

1. As we begin our floor and cab corner replacement for our Bomb Truck project, here is a very common problem area on these older Chevy and GMC trucks. The lower rear corners of the cab gather debris and rust from the inside out.

2

2. We started out by masking off our initial straight cut lines and used the electric grinder and cutoff wheel to start removing the problem areas.

MONTHLYTECHTIP 3. The new cab corner patch panels from Brothers Truck Parts fit perfectly over the contours of our cab.

4. With the bulk of the old corner sheetmetal out of the way, we can now see the condition of the inner rocker panels, too. We discovered the driver side inner piece needed to be replaced due to rust holes.

BY AXALTA COATINGS SYSTEMS

HOT HUES DARE TO BE DIFFERENT! When it comes to car show award-winning paint or cover car magazine material, the Hot Hues custom finishes by Axalta consists of special two- and three-stage basecoat colors and concentrated candy color products designed to help you create a truly unique finish for your lowrider. Hot Hues’ Hot Candy Color concentrates are liquid additives designed and packaged to provide a maximum color impact. The Hot Candy Colors you choose to like that are off of their color chart can be added to a variety of “carriers,” including Hot Hues Intercoat Adhesion Promoter, Hot Hues Binder, and Hot Hues Balancer Cromax Clearcoats. By design, these candy concentrates are meant for applications over the top of their ground coat colors, and then cleared with their topcoat quality clear. Always shake the Hot Candy Concentrate by hand prior to mixing and reduction for application. Insoluble material may settle out over time so be sure to strain with a fine mesh strainer during mixing process. Hot Candy Concentrates cannot be used individually as a coating only, they have to be mixed with a carrier.

5A.-5B. On the passenger side the inner rocker piece was still in good condition so we decided to retain it. In order to remove the outer sheetmetal piece at the spot welds we actually used a hard grinding wheel on the electric grinder to thin the outer piece until it was paper thin. This method we’ve learned works much better and quicker than trying to drill out all of the spot welds.

6

6. Brothers Truck Parts came to our rust rescue by supplying a new Inner Cab Corner patch panel. The perfect fitment made installation a snap.

For more technical advice please feel free to contact Axalta’s product specialist Steven Chaparro at steven.c.chaparro@axaltacs.com.

7A

7A.-7B. The new lower cab corner was trimmed to fit with perfect gaps then butt-welded in place for a seamless finished product. We made sure to keep tack welding a little at a time to reduce warpage. Once the seam was fully welded up, we proceeded to smooth it all out.

11

11. Both of the floorpans with toeboard pieces from Brothers dropped right into place, flawlessly.

8. Our next part of metal panel replacement was the floor of our truck cab, which also showed definite signs of wear from over the years, so we decided to call on Brothers Truck Parts for all-new panels too. The new floorpan with toeboard pieces are formed to factory specs and will make our floors just like new.

12

12. Now that the new floorboards are welded in they’re good as new, if not even better, thanks to the amazing replacement pieces available through Brothers Truck Parts!

HARBOR FREIGHT TOOLS HAVE LONG BEEN FROWNED UPON, BUT AFTER DOING OUR OWN RESEARCH AND REVIEWS WE WERE LEFT WITH NOTHING BUT SMILES—AND THAT MUCH MORE MONEY FOR THE REST OF OUR PROJECT BUILDS.

TEXT BY JOE RAY | PHOTOS BY BETO MENDOZA

Years ago, mentioning the name Harbor Freight would earn you plenty of laughs and almost discredit your mechanical prowess, but those days are long gone. Today, Harbor Freight has lasted the test of time, and most of their products have impressed even the harshest of critics. Considered by many elitists to be “throwaway tools”, that perception has quickly changed over the past decade. We’ve seen our fair share of shops use many of the products from the Harbor Freight catalog and their results have been

A variety of Harbor Freight tools for your body shop.

stellar. Especially when one considers building a homebased DIY shop—or for the extreme hobbyists—these tools will last the test of time so long as you clean and maintain them properly. To be honest, the tool game has a lot of ego involved in it. We’ve seen guys with full Snap On tool sets that couldn’t build a car if Boyd Coddington was by their side, and on the flip side we’ve seen guys build incredible cars with the most obscure and inexpensive tools. In short, the tools don’t make the car, the person 74

using them does. That said, Harbor Freight really does make some great tools. In the cost versus quality comparison, they are perhaps the best tools on the market in many segments. Especially when you consider building a car at home, these tools are incredible and will definitely last a lifetime. To be honest, you also have to consider how much you’ll be using the tools. If you’re running an industrial or commercial operation where heavy tool use is required on the daily, some of

their products may not be as stellar as some commercial-duty brands, but we wouldn’t sign off on them right away. Do your homework, give them a try, and you’ll see that the stereotypes and rumors are mostly false. In this section we’ll be doing a review on some of their tools and we were more than satisfied with over 95 percent of the products we tested. Now, when you consider the price we paid, the savings are incredible, and the job still got done, while also leaving behind plenty of money saved—only to be put back into some good food and beer for the friends who dropped by to help.

Brake Upgrade Kits SIX FABULOUS CHOICES to suit every driving style and budget. All EBC rotors are now black GEOMET® corrosion resistant coated...

These rotors WILL NOT RUST

60 G 5HP 165-PSI TWO-STAGE COMPRESSOR

The priciest item on our list is this two-stage compressor. I’ll admit that I’d probably buy a similar and used Ingersoll Rand compressor at this price, or a smaller-capacity brand name unit, but to be honest, it’s more of a vanity issue than a performance issue. For me personally, I like to see a nice compressor tucked away in my garage, but again that’s just me. But if you must have a brand-new compressor, then this Harbor Freight unit is definitely a steal. A bit louder than oil-less compressors, this one fires up a bit slower than other dual stages I’ve seen but it works and it fills up quickly. On another note, here’s a free tip: Buying a big compressor is always better because it gives you more time to use tools without the motor firing up and your neighbors and friends won’t be so quick to borrow it.

AIR NEEDLE SCALER

Compact and easy to use, this air needle scaler comes with 19 hardened steel needles, which offers a 1⁄2-inch stroke with a maximum speed of 4,600 bpm. With an average air consumption of 10 CRM at 90 psi, this tool is perfect for removing welding flux, rust, paint, and cement on just about any surface that needs heavy scouring. For us, we tested their air needle scaler to remove layers of paint from the control arms on a '63 Impala, and we even used it to remove some old chrome off bumpers. It did the job, and it did it well.

GRAVITY FEED SPRAY GUN STAND

7-PIECE BODY & FENDER SET

We put this 7-piece set to work and it worked wonders. Again, at the hands of an expert, the job was done and there were no complaints about the build quality of the tools. Ideal for autobody repair and fabrication, this 7-piece set comes in a handy container for safekeeping. Designed to handle most fabrication and repairs, use the hammers and dollies in this body and fender set to remove dings and dents, flatten metal panels, create curves, and shrink metal. Constructed from heat-treated, drop-forged carbon steel, they are sturdy enough to take a beating and come with fiberglass handles with nonslip-rubberized grips.

⁄8-INCH—50-FOOT PVC/ RUBBER AIR HOSE

3

Made of rubber/PVC, this hose from Central Pneumatic, is lighter than rubber, more flexible than PVC, and after a few weeks of use it still held up. This hose, as with any hose, needs a longterm test plan, but for the price, we were definitely impressed by the build quality. With brass fittings and bend restrictors, the hose is well built at an affordable price point, so it won’t hurt your pockets to throw it away and buy another should it happen to fail. P95 MAINTENANCE-FREE DUAL-CARTRIDGE RESPIRATOR

For the price, these respirators work. We’ve definitely seen better quality respirators in terms of build quality, so we’d have to pass on using this in the paint booth and use it for lighter projects, such as sanding and light primer work. They’re definitely throw-away respirators because there is no way to replace the cartridge, but in all they’re a great general purpose respirator for the DIY guy. 76

The perfect support stand for your spray gun, this nifty device is made of durable steel and comes predrilled so you can mount it on your workbench or your wall. You’ve spent more money buying a burrito at your favorite Mexican restaurant, so why not invest less into a stand that makes you the money that affords you those good meals. 200Z PRO HVLP GRAVITY GUN

This HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) spray gun is gravity fed and not only is it better for the environment, but also a great savings when it comes to material costs. With a 20-ounce capacity, we used this gun to lay down a few fine coats of paint and the quality is definitely there.

STUD WELDER DENT REPAIR KIT

Perfect for repairing dings and dents without drilling, this stud welder comes with a high-powered low heat transformer with a resettable breaker. In addition, a 2-pound slide hammer and a 1-second cycle time makes it easy to use, and it’s got a 2 percent duty cycle. Once again, we used this tool to pull 16 dents, ranging from small to large, and we had no problems at all. Once again, the perfect tool for a home garage at a fraction of the cost.

We have remained the most respected name in windshield wiper upgrade kits because wipers are our first and only business! 6-INCH 320-GRIT PSA SANDING DISCO (50 PIECE)

These sanding discs with PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) are easy to use and attach and they come with an anticlog zinc stearate coating to resist dust buildup and a “hole-free” design, which reduces tearing. Crafted with durable carbide abrasive, the heavy-duty C-weight paper backing works great. While we have seen other sanding discs with better bite and action, the price point of these discs makes them still our top pick, and the difference in performance between leading brands doesn’t make the squeeze worth the juice, so in the end it’s our top choice for a DIY build. 6-INCH DUAL-ACTION SANDER

A dual motion orbital sander with 10,000 rpm and an adjustable speed regulator is what you get when you open up the box, and it does what it’s supposed to do. It’s really that simple. We used it for most of our projects, and the only problem we faced was user error when we over-lubricated the product. Again, tools don’t make mistakes, people do and we were proof of that.

AIR INLINE SANDER

This dual piston straight-line sander generates 3,000 strokes per minute and features a 1-inch stroke and tensioned spring clamps for easy paper changes. This tool requires 90 psi of working pressure, and it’s a great tool for garage body shops. When given to body guys that are still new to the game, they had nothing bad at all to say, but when given to professional body guys, they said that it worked well but lacked just a bit of power. Again, a great tool for DIY guys and

worthy of its excellent price point. 23⁄4X16 AO SAND ASST 5-PIECE

What more can we say? These sanding sheets are incredible. Perfect for wet and dry sanding, you can use these for all types of material. We used it to strip down fenders with rust and patina, used it to sand down our woodwork for the speaker boxes and custom trim panels, and even used it on some furniture projects we were finishing off.

6-PIECE PANEL/TRIM REMOVAL TOOL

What can we say? These tools do exactly what they’re supposed to do and they’re a must for any garage builder or professional shop. Seriously, if you need a set of “brand name” panel and trim removal tools, you’re definitely doing it to compensate for something to be discussed with your wife or girlfriend.

In closing, all we can say is that the ROI (return on investment) on these tools are epic. Harbor Freight Tools are no different than most mid- to high-level brands in the fact that you have to do your own research and see what works best for you. As with any product line, there will always be the good and bad part of their lineup, and while Harbor Freight may have had a shoddy reputation to begin with, things are slowly changing so don’t sign off on them anytime soon because they’re here to stay. So in short, worry more about your skill set than your tool set because in the end just remember that pencils don’t make mistakes and great tools don’t make great cars. It’s all about the person or the operator behind the instruments, which help us get where we need to be. It’s all about working with what you have, and what you can afford, and as I type up this story I’m smirking because I’m doing it on a $5 imitation-Mac keyboard that has worked flawlessly for the past six years.

4-PIECE DOORSKIN REPAIR KIT

If you need to repair or replace a doorskin, then this is the ultimate kit for you. The 1.45-pound doorskin hammer is made of forged, ground, and polished alloy steel and features a cushion grip to help absorb the impact. Heel and toe dollies are also included in the kit, as well as 123⁄4-inch dinging spoon. We had one of our friends test the kit out, and it’s safe to say that the tools easily outweighed his skill set. That said, after hours of practice—and frustration watching—we had one of our body guys come over to do the job for him and even he was impressed with the quality of the kit in comparison to the price. MECHANICS GLOVES MEDIUM

Protect yourself from heat, cold, abrasions, and cuts with these breathable gloves. Created from 50 percent synthetic leather in the palms and fingers, these gloves were good but we’ve definitely seen better. Again, this is a matter of personal preference, but when working with your hands, we like to use better-fitting gloves and we found these just a tad bit sloppy. Just to emphasize the point, this review is coming from a bunch of glove snobs who are extremely picky with what they wear, and it’s a glove that would work perfect for most of the general public.

When a brand is enthusiastic and passionate about its products and customers, it becomes clearly evident in the ways they reach out to their community and core consumers. In short, they become intertwined into the lifestyle arena within their industry and they take a proactive role in building events and campaigns around their products. That said, Axalta serves as a great example of a company who is passionate and dedicated to their craft, and their annual Winter Panel Jam has become one of our favorites to attend. The Winter Panel Jam is an annual shindig, which is presented by Axalta Coating Systems. In its fifth installment, they’ve once again gathered the world’s top artists, pinstripers, and painters. CAR MODEL

1964 IMPALA CONVERTIBLE SS BY CHEVROLET

IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE RIGHT, SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO DO IT YOURSELF BY STEPH BUENO

Jorge Maldonado has been involved with cars his whole life. His father was an auto mechanic and was always working on cars. Ever since he could remember, he used to wake up early to go with his dad to car show swap meets to find car parts. When Jorge was 7 years old, his first build was a '64 Impala Model Car. This in turn led him to build a 20-inch Schwinn lowrider bike and at the age of 12 he joined Superiors O.C. Bike Club. It was Jorge’s childhood dream to build a lowrider. When he was 16 his dream came true. His father helped him purchase his first lowrider, a '66 Chevy Impala. Like father like son, Jorge also became an auto technician and fabricator. He did a full ground-up restoration on his Impala. Since then he has owned numerous lowriders—a '79 Monte Carlo, '54 Bel Air, '65 Impala, and now a '64 Impala convertible. Jorge bought his '64 Impala SS convertible six years ago. The car was in fair condition and driveable, but had minor paint defects. He took it straight to Rudy from R&R Auto Body to touch up the paint and then to Edgar

from Maxima Imagen to do a mural on the dashboard of his daughter, Rosalinda, who passed away. Once that was completed, he threw on some wire wheels for a clean look and drove it like that for two years. He took his ride to local car shows and events and enjoyed cruising with his family. Eventually, Jorge decided that it was time for a new look and opted for a color change, taking his car to a different body shop. Eight months later and unhappy with the quality of the work, he decided to bring the car home and do it himself. Jorge had his entire family and friends helping him to remove all the paint and primer right down to the metal. So began the long process of rebuilding the body. Every weekend for six months his friend Javier Saucedo helped him work on his Impala. Finally, the hard work paid off and the car was ready for paint. Jorge rented a local spray booth and Javier sprayed the car charcoal gray. Now that the car was coming underway, he made a goal to have his car ready for the Las Vegas LOWRIDER Super Show in October 2015. Jorge worked on his ride all day and night, along with his friend Gary Reyn88

Jorge put together gravity pumps that he had designed himself and had CNC-machined blocks. He then used aircraft dumps, known as click clacks and zig-zag slow down valves, with the help from Saul Vargas of Wild Child Customs. They hardlined the whole system and powered them with four Optima batteries. Jorge was very proud that he accomplished his goal. He made it to the Super Show in Las Vegas with a clean, simple lowrider. He could not have done this without the support of his wife, Rosa, his family, friends, and his Superiors Car Club family.

4-YEAR-OLD WITH A PEDAL AND BIKE BY BETO MENDOZA

The best of both worlds for this "lil' baby."

We met 4-year-old KenNiyia Holley’s father, Kenneth, from Los Angeles when he came into our studio this past December. Kenneth was there detailing DMack’s '63 from Majestics before its shoot. It was there that Kenneth showed us his kid’s bikes and we knew we had to get them in the studio. The '76 Schwinn 16-inch bike and seat were painted cotton candy pink and pearls by Danny A. After the paint was done he added hot pink striping to the frame, seat, and fenders. To finish it off Kenneth added twisted pedals, twisted apple crate, mirrors, and a headlight. Tony Tone of High Class Car Club painted the pedal car using candy purple with pearls and pink pinstriping. Jesse Cruz of La Gente Car Club custom-made a seat; all the chrome was done by Speedy’s Polishing in Long Beach, California.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE TASTEMAKERS AND INFLUENCERS OF THE LOWRIDER WORLD STORY BY JOE RAY

Even in this day and age of openmindedness and social awareness, there are still many cultures overshadowed and haunted by negative and age-old stereotypes. Of the many cultures that continue to be judged or perceived on the basis of false or dated misinformation is the culture of lowriding. Typically pigeonholed as vehicles for gangsters and the mode of transportation for the underworld, lowriding has long been at the receiving end of negative press. That said, the mission for creating “Roll Models” is to introduce 5-6 minute video segments that will teach the masses otherwise. The purpose of these segments is to highlight and expose the true beauty of the personalities behind lowriding. We want to share our culture, spread the love, and above and beyond everything else, we want to share the stories of the men and women who not only build—but drive—these incredible vehicles and influence the world in their own special way. Lowriding is a labor of love that takes years to complete and these are cars that are typically passed on from one generation to the next. In short, they become a part of the family lineage and tradition. The personal relationship between car and owner is one that represents a culture that revolves around family. Yet, these six-figure builds are being orchestrated by individuals whose occupational history and significance is as rich and

vivid as the paintjobs on their cars and that is what we want to showcase. We will be featuring lowrider owners who are sworn officers, entertainers, and athletes and included in this long list of stand-up individuals are CEOs and CFOs of some of your favorite destination points. They are leaders in the community, they fight for our freedom, and some simply just work hard for their money, but in the end what ties them together is the unity of our car culture and the desire to give back to the community. The reach of each segment is one that is sure to go viral. It is also an important vessel of communication that will open the eyes of car lovers globally. From longtime readers to those interested—but always embarrassed—to admit their appreciation of lowriders, these video segments will erase the marks of ignorance, and shed light on the overshadowed world in which we have a multicultural love affair with our cars and the lifestyle that stands behind it. In addition to educating the masses, we are here to educate the future lowriders about the history of lowriding while dispelling the myths and rumors that derelicts and misfits of society strictly own our cars. It’s time for us to expand the reach of our market and we wholeheartedly believe that Roll Models will help us achieve that goal and we’d love for you to join us for the ride. 96

Shell Lubricants, featuring Quaker State Motor Oils, and LOWRIDER magazine proudly presents our next candidate for the LOWRIDER Roll Models Series: Miguel Alatorre, Klique Car Club San Diego, '59 convertible Impala, Nov. ’15 cover car “The Antidote” As a retired military officer, Miguel Alatorre, has been responsible for fighting for our freedom and his fight continues today when it comes to stereotypes of lowriding. Roll Models sits down with this veteran as he makes a case as to why his love for classic cars and wire wheels has kept him on another mission.

Some things, no matter how much you try and take care of them, just wear out over time or need to be improved. For instance, if you fancy the look of the bedwood your Chevy pickup originally came with, it’s only a matter of time before the elements have rotted it out or you just decided to convert your metal floor to the more appealing aesthetic of wood and stainless strips. Thankfully, companies like Bruce Horkey’s Wood and Parts have got you and your pickup bed covered. Brakes need constant maintenance and

many have made the jump to convert their older GM cars to disc. Wilwood’s AFX kit will help you in converting or upgrading your factory GM disc brakes for the '64-'72 A-body, '67-'69 F-body, and '64-'74 X-body. Thinking of adding accessories to your engine? Of course you are. You need the right system to turn all those components though, and Eddie Motorsports’ S-Drive Plus Serpentine Pulley Drive System can handle all that torque and make your engine look good doing it.
