my 30+ year career, I have rarely found such a high quality product with such great mass market appeal. My customers range from hobbyists that purchase one can at a time, to fine artists and muralists whose purchases often exceed 50 cans. My staff and I thought that Montana Gold was a home run. But now that we have Montana Black and White too, the product is out of the ball park. Our sales continue to increase as does our selection. In fact, we believe that the new additions have driven new business to our store. Allen Shefts President Jerry’s Artist Outlet West Orange, New Jersey

Wet Paint was one of the test markets for Germanmade Montana spray paint in the United States. In

2010 we increased our commitment to our aerosol paint department by adding the full range of the reformulated Montana Gold, as well as the entire Montana Black and Montana White ranges of color. Word of our expansive Montana inventory spread quickly; we had customers visiting Wet Paint specifically to see the Montana aisle within hours of its debut. Not only is Wet Paint now better equipped to serve muralists and urban writers, our neighborhood customers have embraced Montana for their home decorating, school project, and craft needs, too. We see the urban art movement as an alternative lifestyle. In the past, it has gained bad press as a tool of

defacement. Today, we see this medium as something that has transformed into a viable art form that is now even present in respected art galleries worldwide. Its growth has established its own rite of passage. In our store, this alternative category has already shown a growth in sales similar to that of more traditional mediums such as watercolors. Like music, it begins with a few and grows to its own success. This section is constantly evolving as more and more people are using this medium in their art. Mark A. Ball General Manager Art Supply Warehouse Westminster, CA

Urban Art is more than just a trend, it’s a growing movement that has been rapidly gaining attention and acceptance over recent years. Although the modern day concept of “graffiti” had its beginnings in the 1970’s and 80’s, mankind has been writing on walls as far back as 30,000 BC thanks to the cavemen and their pictographs. Back then, man used bone fragments and pigments to create artwork on walls. Over 32,000 years later, man is still creating art on walls, but using spray cans as the main tool of choice. Modern day graffiti has long carried a stigma to it thanks to illegal “tagging”. However society has taken note that there are also extremely talented artists out there creating amazing murals on “legal walls” (walls which the artist has received prior permission to paint on). These murals become public art that gives not only flavor to a community but is free for all to enjoy. Urban Art has found itself to be part of a certain lifestyle or “street culture”, which also identifies with hip hop music and clothing, and “b-boy” style break dancing. Major players have been taking note of Urban Art by embracing it and validating it as an art form. In spring 2009, the Grand Palais museum in Paris, France held an exhibit of Urban Art featuring over 300 graffiti-style pieces by 150 artists. In spring 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, CA also featured a major Urban Art exhibition called “Art in the Streets”. Art Basel in Miami, FL features large scale Urban Art exhibitions every year such as Primary Flight and the Wynwood Walls. Urban artists have also been putting their works on canvas and commanding notable prices in art galleries around the world.

Urban Art as a category has expanded beyond just murals and canvases painted with spray paint. Artists are using a variety of tools such as spray paints, markers, stencils, airbrush, inks, wheat paste, brushes, and acrylic paints to create artwork on walls, canvas, sketchbooks, paper, clothing, shoes, hats, and many other various types of surfaces. The main tool for Urban Art, the spray can, has also evolved over recent years to better suit artists’ needs - from traditional hardware store spray paint to the highly-specialized cans you see today, such as Montana Gold. Thanks to ease of use, versatility of application, and extensive color palettes, this kind of artists’ spray paint has also found itself in the hands of a variety of users, including those who want the perfect color and coverage for various craft projects, movie studios, people looking to quickly paint a piece of furniture a new color, and for many other uses. Art supply retailers have embraced this new category and are creating entire Urban Art departments to meet the needs of a new generation of artists. For the first time since the introduction of acrylic paints in the 1950’s, the art supply industry has found itself with an exciting new innovation that is generating growth and sales exponentially. As a category, retailers are quickly discovering that spray paint and Urban Art are rivaling sales of their watercolor and acrylic departments, bringing the movement full circle as Urban Art supplies find a permanent home alongside traditional color categories.
