American Vision Award Winners
The American Vision Award winners are chosen as the “Best of Show” from all of the artwork entered in this year’s Michigan Thumb Regional competition. Each regional program across the country selects the five most outstanding works of art from their Gold Key recipients. These five young artists represent the region on the national level as American Vision nominees. A national panel selects one of the nominated works from each region as the American Vision Award Recipient for 2021.

Scott is a licensed architect with more than 24 years of experience in multiple market sectors across Commercial, Government, Residential, Education, Industrial, and Retail. Scott leads the Commercial Studio in NORR’s Detroit office and excels in corporate interiors and workplace strategies. A proponent of data-driven design, he’s on top of the latest research in industrial-organizational psychology and the positive effect it can have on workplace design. Scott’s Government Studio has been instrumental in the resurgence and renaissance taking place in Detroit, as they partner to improve and preserve the inventory of government buildings and infrastructure.
Phil began working with The Art Center as Grant Coordinator in 2009. He studied photography and ceramics, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Northern Michigan University in 2005, and a Master of Public Administration from Wayne State University in 2013. He has exhibited in more than two-dozen shows and served in leadership roles in the Mount Clemens Art Association. As Grant Coordinator, Phil developed funding proposals to support operations and programming and administered the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Mini-grant Program for Macomb and Oakland counties. Phil began his role as Executive Director in October 2015

Dave Chow has made a living creating art for two of Detroit’s most popular exports—cars and music. As an independent freelancer, Chow has had the opportunity to work with clients from all across the nation. He has drawn many of the vehicles produced by Ford, Honda, Toyota, Ferrari, General Motors, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, and FCA, as well as create artwork for the Detroit Zoo, Hungry Howie’s, Verizon, Denso, Ally Bank, Quicken Loans, Art Van, various professional sports teams, and award-winning music videos. He has also participated in consumer focus group testing on consumer products within the last few months.

Since graduating from Wayne State (2015) with a focus in Sculpture, Joe has been expanding work to industrial scales and virtual realities. Joe creates mysterious objects and scenarios that aim to recreate experiences as a form of memory preservation.

Sandra has worked as an art therapist and art teacher in both Australia and the USA and was an adjunct professor in the Masters of Mental Health program within the School of Medicine at University of Queensland in Australia. Sandra has co-authored a number of chapters in published books and academic articles on the topic of art therapy. Sandra currently works as an Art Therapist with Michigan Medicine at The Rogel Cancer Center, University of Michigan.

Carla works as the Director of Admissions at the College for Creative Studies. Gonzalez is an active member of the National Portfolio Day Association (NPDA) and Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD). Prior to her role in Admissions, she was Director of PreCollege and Continuing Studies at CCS, where she planned and managed curricula for high school students and adults, as well as for certificate programs. Before CCS, Gonzalez bought art as an Art Buyer for Mazer Corp., managed an art gallery in Chicago, and held teaching positions at Wright State University, Grinnell College, New Trier Extension, and the University of Illinois Chicago. This is Carla’s first time participating as a juror in Scholastics
CHRISTINA HAYLETT MIXED MEDIA / PRINTMAKING / PAINTING BFA, College for Creative Studies
Christina is a full-time working artist. She shows her work regularly and is always painting. She is retired from Fiat Chrysler and since retiring her attention is focused on creating art.
KEN HERSHENSON MIXED MEDIA / PRINTMAKING / PAINTING Kenneth is, by and large, a self-taught painter. Before becoming a full time artist, he served as an architectural designer for Disney and Starbucks. He has a professional background in architectural illustration, and his paintings have won a number of state and national awards, including an Award of Excellence from the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society. Ken’s work was also published in 10 national publications, and he is known for his award-winning “I DO Know Jack!” series of photo-realistic acrylic paintings. Kenneth is a member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society and currently teaches painting at Atelier Art Studio in Royal Oak, Michigan. To view his work, visit www.kennethhershensonart.com.

TARA KURTZHALS
An adjunct faculty member in the College for Creative Studies Crafts Department, Mollie is a widely published expert on textiles and has exhibited her fiber art and lectures throughout the United States. She is a past recipient of the “Best Michigan Woman Artist” award, and her commissions include works for the Ford Motor Company and Marriott Hotels.

COMIC ART / DRAWING Tara Kurtzhals is a sequential artist and writer with a passion for creating comics that help others positively navigate the world. Tara has been working in comics for five years, self-publishing on Kickstarter and freelancing with clients such as Webtoon, Lion Forge, and the Nib. In their first work, Girls Have A Blog. Tara tackled themes of depression, anxiety, and feminism. Tara wants to encourage the next generation to create art with their unique perspectives to fill the world with incredible stories.

Kris has lived and worked in the Detroit area her entire life. She began her creative career in a bridal salon, creating custom headpieces, veils, hats, beading and altering gowns. For the past 28 years, she has worked in art studios, advertising agencies, and public relations agencies as a designer. Kris has been teaching design at Macomb Community College for 15 years and is a freelance designer.
Alex Tapnio is Associate Director of Alumni Engagement at Parsons School of Design/The New School. He has 6 years of experience in universities in the arts having worked at The New School, Columbia University School of the Arts, and The Cooper Union. Previously he worked in corporate art programming at Time Warner, JPMorgan and the national office of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. He’s devoted his career to supporting young artists through philanthropic, community and arts initiatives. He lives in NYC, creating his own work in printmaking and jewelry design. He is a ‘94 Portfolio Gold Key Winner.

Christopher is an artist, non-profit director, business owner, and adjunct photography professor at Lawrence Technological University and Oakland Community College. Carol taught art for 36 years in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District. She has also taught at the University of Michigan, Museum of Art, and various private art studios. Carol’s Graduate work included concentrations of printmaking, including intaglio and painting. Her passion for creating with clay began as a child and continues today with both functional and non-functional work.

An Alumna of the College for Creative Studies’ Crafts Department, Amber Thomas pursued Art Furniture and Glass Concentrations during her undergraduate studies. She has worked as a jeweler, glass artist, and design consultant prior to her start at the college’s admissions department where, as the Associate Director of Admissions-Transfer and Articulation, she helps forge the path to CCS for future creatives throughout Michigan and around the globe.

Mark Zapico served as a faculty member for 17 years, 12 as Chair of the Advertising Department. He helped establish CCS as a national leader in nurturing creative talent in advertising and communications. His students have won more than 250 creative awards. As a professional, Mark worked as a designer, art director, and creative director for national clients, including Pontiac, Cadillac, Ford, Mr. Goodwrench, FTD, American Plastics Council, DOW Chemical, Pulte Homes, AAA Michigan, and many more. As a full-time artist, his paintings and drawings have been widely exhibited and found in many corporate and private collections.

Ken is a freelance photographer, specializing in automotive advertising. He has owned several studios in the Detroit area.
