58th European Music Festival for Young People Neerpelt 30 April - 3 May 2010

Dear Festival friends! On Sunday November 8, 1953 a get-together of an odd 10 local youth and school choirs was organised at the Sint-Hubertuscollege, in Neerpelt. The idea was to stimulate practising music and singing in the post-war period. Not a single person had the slightest idea that so modest an initiative would ever develop into today’s European Music Festival for Young People. The history of our festival was written down not just by the local population but just as well by all participants from Europe and beyond, showing their musical talents to an international jury in the past 58 years. In 2010, 111 choirs and 4400 singing youngsters from 26 countries have taken part in the 58th edition of our Festival. Another 400 volunteers, backed –up by the inhabitants of Neerpelt and the surrounding villages, took good care of the numerous concerts, the accommodation in general and the logistics of our festival. We honestly thank all of them for their beautiful musical highlights, cultural exchanges, encouragements and support. We hope you had a great time in Neerpelt and all of you learned to appreciate and discover each other’s cultures. Together we tried to create, through all singing voices, a better world to live in. See you again, in Neerpelt! Jan Coninx President
