Number 92 April 16, 2010 4 new wines. Don’t wait too long, there’s not much of any of them.
Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Oakville 2007 Regularly $120.00 These 12 bottles, $100.00 Robert Parker 93 The finest Cabernet Sauvignon I have ever tasted from Far Niente may be the 2007 Estate. Its dense purple color is accompanied by fragrant aromatics of creme de cassis, spice box, underbrush, and forest floor. Voluptuously-textured and full-bodied with superb purity and depth as well as a layered, complete finish, this terrific wine should be drinkable before the 2006, but age just as long 20-25+ years. December 2009 We got this case on a pre-order from Star Distributors. We’ll be able to get more of this but the price will go back to $120.00.
Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford CC Ranch 2006 Regularly $100.00 These 6 bottles, $74.00 Not reviewed. Mack got to taste the Far Niente and 4 Nickel & Nickel Cabernets at a lunch Star had at River Oaks. He gives CC Ranch 96 points and compares it to the 2005 Hartwell Cabernet. We probably won’t be able to get any more of this. Like the Far Niente, this was a pre-order from Star.
Kazmer & Blaise Chardonnay Carneros Boon Fly's Hill 2007 $50.00 2007 has not been reviewed but here’s the Wine Spectator review of the 2006 Wine Spectator 95 Deliciously complex, rich and layered, with a mix of fig, apricot, spice and smoky, toasty oak, all fanning out to subtle nuances and ending with a wonderful finish. Drink now through 2014. 90 cases made. There was an increase in production in 2007, 92 cases. That’s right, 92 cases. We’ve been asking about this for a few months, just hoping to get a little. Yesterday, Mike Whitfield, the wine manager at United Liquors, called to say he’d found a case of Boon Fly’s in the warehouse. Couldn’t find out where it came from or who it belonged to. So he sold it to us. Kazmer & Blaise are the same guys that make Molnar Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. I know we’ve sold many of you the chardonnay. Obviously, with only 92 cases, there won’t be any more than this.
Relic Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Rockledge Vineyard 2007 $82.00 Robert Parker 91+ The elegant, flowery, but backward 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Rockledge Vineyard offers up scents of gravel, burning embers, black and red currants, and a hint of bay leaf. Fleshy with soft tannins, this cuvee will benefit from several years of cellaring, and should drink well for 20+ years. This tiny estate has a small production, but the quality of its wines is very high. December 2009 Wine Spectator 90 Serves up a complex mix of spicy currant, blackberry, cedar, herb, dill and black licorice. Full-bodied, intense, focused and balanced, firming on the finish. Drink now through 2017. 185 cases made. Relic is owned by our friend Schatzi Throckmorton and her husband, Mike Hirby. Schatzi also manages Erna Schein and Mike is also a consulting winemaker at Realm. Pretty good team. And Schatzi’s brother, Quinn, is a doctor at Campbell Clinic.
