Dear Parents

Only one week to go until the commencement of the 2012 school year. I hope all your Christmas and New Year celebrations were just fabulous. If you are like me it all seems almost a distant memory! Over the break we have been very busy at the College. We have completed some major renovations on the King’s Park Campus. The Art Room and Learning Support Centre have both been relocated. Where the Art Room was there is now a great Middle School Science Lab and the Art Department has occupied the space previously housing our Learning Support Centre. At the same time the Pre-Prep Learning Centre has been completed ready for the start of the school year. We are just waiting for the final building certification to be approved. The covered walkways are finally going in at the Junior Campus. They will be finalised after the students return. These walkways have made a big difference on the campus, connecting buildings. They seem to ‘make sense’ of the campus in some way. While we had very few staff leave at the end of last year we have grown a bit so have added a number of new teachers. We will introduce them to you in a future newsletter. I am looking forward to a fantastic year at MCC and I look forward to greeting you all at some point over the coming weeks. Yours in Christ

From the Head of Teaching & Learning

HOLIDAYS ~ Welcome back! Always a time of great fun, sometimes work and often tiring, I trust your holidays were all that you needed them to be! Murray, Daniel and I headed off on a road trip through central Queensland, down to Dubbo (cycled the zoo), Mount Kosciusko (froze in Jindabyne), Canberra (awed by the War Memorial), Sydney THEN flew to Perth for a family reunion and maintenance of Nanna’s house, back to Sydney for New Years on the harbour, then back on the road home to Mackay. 4750 km travelled in our camper trailer JUST on the east coast! I am exhausted just typing it. When I plan holidays like this I sometimes develop some idealistic ideas of how I will spend my time. I recently became the proud owner of an electronic book – a Kindle – which I absolutely love and would highly recommend, especially for travelling. I was able to store over 30 books on my Kindle – hoping to get through at least two thirds of them! Reading in the dark and cold camper became an issue but thanks to the great ‘book light’ of a dear friend, my plans weren’t stalled…..until I got involved in the beautiful scenery, great activities and of course spending time with my boys. Reading became not as high on the priority list (However I would recommend ‘The Help’ fantastic book even if you’ve seen the movie). Often as I lay in the camper bed dark and often cold, wet nights, I so valued the light that was shed on the Kindle to reveal the story. How much like life in general and particularly in school is that? We often don’t know truth and reality until light is shed on situations and circumstances. I see the Teaching & Learning Team as this light for our students. This year sees some changes in our team which I hope these changes will make things easier for students and parents to navigate through both course and subject choices.

Our hope is that together we can shed light on all the potential pathways available for students on their journey through school. If you have ANY questions concerning your child’s subjects and learning journey please feel free to contact our office. ALL students are important to us and we will do our utmost to make their journey satisfying and with potential for growth. We never know where life will take us or who we may meet….. Just a few Reminders….  Student timetables will be distributed on the first day of school (Monday 23 rd

January).  If students wish to make subject changes, a Subject Change request form MUST be completed (pick these up from our office), signed by parents and after discussion with either Mrs Greentree, Mrs Lister or myself, moves will only be approved if there is room in the class and if we believe it is in the best interest of the student for their learning pathway.  Subject changes can only be made within the first two weeks of Term 1 and 3 and after discussion with teachers of these subjects, parents and the Teaching & Learning Team.  Year 9 & 10 electives are designed to be a two year courses.  Ensure students secure OR write their timetables into their diaries and carry these with them EVERY day – this is their lifeline and parents communication tool with the College. I am looking forward to working with everyone throughout 2012.

From the Head of Middle School Hi all, welcome or welcome back to Mackay Christian College, Middle School for 2012. We have some new staff, and rooms have been changed to cater for the needs of our current classes. The Art Room has relocated and a new Middle School Science Laboratory has been built, so now Year 7 classes will have most of their Science lessons in a Science Laboratory. The 4 Year 7 classes will be in the AD building. The first big activity for the year will be the Year 9 camp in week 6 of Term 1. The students will go in 2 groups. The boys will have a separate camp to the girls so we can focus on the important issues for each gender over the 3 days. More information will be given to the students during their first week of school. We look forward to a year where we can provide challenge and support through our CLEAR values. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. It is always better to deal with things early to avoid unnecessary worry or stress. We will have a meet and greet afternoon in the next few weeks to touch base with you to see how things are going. I look forward to seeing you there. From the Creative Academy “Where every student is a star�

WELCOME I would like to welcome back all our wonderful students and parents in our ensembles, all those who are taking lessons and all new students and parents to the beginning of another exciting new year with our Creative Academy. BEGINNING OF YEAR ROUTINES

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS 2012 If your child had lessons in the Creative Academy last year and you wish them to continue with no changes, you do not need to fill out a lesson enrolment form. If you have any questions or wish to make any changes, please email Mrs Thomas at the College on dthomas@mccmky.qld.edu.au. If you are new to the College and wish to have lessons in any of the following areas, please contact either Mr Winterstein or Mrs Thomas on 4963 1100. We have excellent teachers in the following areas: Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Strings, Guitars, Piano/Keyboard, Voice, Speech & Drama and Communication Skills. INSTRUMENTS If you hire or wish to hire an instrument from the Creative Academy, we will be at the College from 16 January. Parents can contact or leave a message for us on 4963 1100. Those who wish to hire an instrument for 2012 and did not organise it for the holidays will be able to collect the instrument after filling in the hire form and paying the hire fee of $70 per semester. ENSEMBLES AND BANDS Students will be allocated to ensembles within the first two weeks of school and notified of rehearsals. Currently our ensemble rehearsals are planned to be the same time as last year. Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble will commence Wednesday Week 2 and most others in Week 3. New Ensemble for 2012 We will be starting a Flute Ensemble this year which will include all our Senior Flautists in the Wind Ensemble. Day and time have yet to be established. From the Library Happy New Year from all at the Libraries. We hope you have had enough time over the Christmas break, to have dived into a few good books. Just a reminder that we still have a lot of school reports awaiting collection at the Senior Library (King’s Park), for those students who have yet to return items borrowed in 2011. Lost items will need to be paid for, before borrowing can recommence for this year. However, if the lost items are eventually found, your money will be cheerfully refunded. The Senior Library is open each day from 8.00am until 4.00pm. Parents wishing to purchase Library bags can collect them from the Junior Library (Providence). Junior Campus Library hours are 8.00am-3.00pm. In the next newsletter, we will outline what services our Libraries can provide for both students and parents. From the Accounts Department Welcome to 2012! You will receive your first School Fee invoice in February. Fees are calculated for the full school year. To assist with family budgeting, fees are spread over 10 equal payments from February to November. Payment is due no later than the last day of the invoiced month. The first invoice for the month of February should be paid by the end of February. The invoice for March will be sent home during the first week of March and should be paid by the end of March and so on. We appreciate our parents who pay fees promptly and regularly, by the end of each month. Families who have difficulty with fees should perhaps consider weekly or fortnightly payments. If you are having trouble understanding your invoice, please phone me through the College Office on 4963 1100 and I will assist you. If you are interested in paying the full year’s fees in advance, this can be done before the end of March and will attract a 5% discount. Please phone for further details if you require this option. Mackay Christian College stands by its commitment to help families in need. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please call to arrange an appointment to discuss what options are available to you. If you were receiving a Fee Rebate or Family Assistance last year, and you are wanting to apply again in 2012, please phone me to book an appointment. Please be aware that all assistance is discontinued at the end of each year and needs to be reapplied for at the beginning of the new year. Payment of fees can be made by Internet, Credit Card, BPay, Cheques or Cash, your receipt is your record of payment. Please keep your receipts so that any payment problems can easily be rectified. Positions Vacant e-Coach Assistant

MCC's e-Coach works with teachers to help get the most out of the various types of computer and IT devices used in classrooms. We are looking for an assistant to support this work. The successful applicant will be someone who either has experience with computers (applicants with at least a Cert III in IT will have an advantage), or an ability to learn quickly. We are looking for an enthusiastic person who can work in teams. The successful applicant will be a Christian, be able to supply a reference from a Minister, and will support the Christian ethos of the College.
