Abstract

The iDigi® Device Cloud™ is a public cloud service designed to provide easy integration with devices. iDigi manages the complexities of network infrastructures, device connectivity options and communication protocols to allow software developers to focus on application development. iDigi works in conjunction with Digi products as well as 3rd party M2M devices to provide a simple web-services interface to access and control remote assets. This enables web and mobile applications to easily communicate with connected devices. This paper serves as an introduction to the iDigi Device Cloud and the advantages it yields for organizations.

White Paper What Is the Internet of Things? Network-enabled devices that include embedded communication modules or that are designed to be used with gateways or routers are flooding the market. Consumer products that are designed to be used with a web or mobile application are becoming the norm. It is estimated that over 100 billion M2M-enabled devices are being shipped globally each year. This is the “Internet of Things” and its creation is firmly underway. In its simplest form, the Internet of Things describes how a device (a “thing”) communicates with an application over the Internet.

How Does This Work? Taking a closer look, we see different types of devices comprising different types of networks that can communicate with a variety of applications over the Internet. These applications may have multiple interfaces. These device networks connect with the Internet and then communicate with the applications via a backhaul network. This backhaul network is the communications backbone of the Internet infrastructure.

The Cloud serves the purpose of providing data services to customer applications through published interfaces. White Paper The iDigi Device Cloud The iDigi Device Cloud is a production environment designed and tested to meet the rigorous requirements of largescale device network deployments. Hosted on a commercial-class infrastructure utilizing virtual and dedicated resources, the iDigi Device Cloud provides on-demand scaling, active monitoring and high-availability of services delivered with the assurance of the comprehensive iDigi security policy.

No Infrastructure Planning Required Using the Cloud to access and control devices is the only architecturally sound way to achieve the scale that will be required as the market evolves. By separating the architecture into layers, each of which can utilize virtualization technologies to scale services, growth can be supported seamlessly without disruption. The Cloud is designed to meet and overcome the challenges of massive scalability, service availability and security. This takes significant investments in infrastructure, operations, facilities, technologies and personnel. Without the Cloud, very few solutions would make it to market. The iDigi Device Cloud greatly reduces the financial barriers to M2M deployment.

Reliability and Security The requirements for reliability and security for the Cloud are significant, and measured against the highest standards. In fact, many customer applications require these standards. As an example, consumer-based applications for home energy management must be compliant with the national security standard for critical infrastructure protection (CIP). The iDigi security policy is based upon a control matrix developed to support the standards set forth by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), ISO/IEC 27002, North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC-CIP) and the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA). Within the Cloud, iDigi security technologies and processes prevent, detect, respond to, and audit cyber threats on a continuous basis. The iDigi Device Cloud also offers a secure VPN service for enhanced security, with the VPN device placed on the customer premises. Using cryptography and uniquely agreed upon security properties, a VPN (also referred to as a “tunnel”) is established between the customer’s networking equipment and the iDigi Device Cloud to ensure full compliance with corporate standards and security requirements. The cost to an organization of building a dedicated private network increases exponentially as the business grows, particularly where remote and international locations are factors. With the iDigi VPN, a business will benefit from superior reach, quality of service and cost savings. The iDigi VPN Service protects all communications between application servers, iDigi Web Services, device users and iDigi Manager Pro. All devices connected via the customer’s network communicate securely with iDigi using the VPN. For additional security, accounts in iDigi may be configured with a policy that limits logon to a specific IP address range and allows only those authorized accounts to be used from inside the customer’s network.

Scalability Today’s device network deployments must be able to adapt and expand seamlessly to support large numbers of devices, data-points and messaging. The iDigi Device Cloud’s throughput capability sets the standard for verified scalability elasticity.

Broadcast Grade Service Availability The iDigi Device Cloud is designed to meet or exceed service availability requirements through commercial class clustering and fail-over technologies. The iDigi platform is hosted in multiple commercial-class SAS 70 certified facilities and on par with the service availability requirements of major media broadcast networks, the iDigi operations organization supports, manages and monitors the iDigi Device Cloud 24/7, 365 days per year through iDigi technical support.

Easy Application Integration with Open, Published APIs Unlike the majority of cloud providers in the market, the iDigi Device Cloud boasts four Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Having multiple APIs enables a developer to create applications that are tailored to their specific market, within an interface that is user-friendly. All Digi gateways, routers and embedded components are iDigi ready and can be instantly provisioned on the iDigi platform and made accessible to iDigi applications. This includes the ConnectPort® and Digi TransPort® product families, and ConnectCore®, XBee® and Rabbit® component product families. Additionally, non-Digi devices can be integrated to the iDigi platform using the iDigi Connector which includes a reference design for Linux.

White Paper iDigi Manager Pro iDigi Manager Pro is a subscription-based web application service, hosted on the iDigi Device Cloud. As a network grows, the complexity in effectively managing the network assets grows exponentially. iDigi Manager Pro grows and adapts as a network does, enabling an organization to manage that complexity and keep the network healthy and efficient. iDigi Manager Pro delivers capabilities that help IT, network operations and customer support organizations conquer the challenges of managing the vast array of equipment in their device networks. iDigi Manager Pro addresses the problems of: • Centralizing access and control of network equipment

• Reducing service complexity

• Maintaining high levels of security

• Provisioning new equipment

• Decommissioning equipment

• Adding functionality to the network

iDigi Manager Pro will work with all Digi gateways, routers, devices and components. Additionally, the iDigi Connector facilitates easy integration of third-party devices and equipment with the iDigi platform. The iDigi platform supports all popular browsers. iDigi Manager Pro provides a robust suite of network management tools including authentication, configuration management, account management, push monitoring, group and individual software updating, network data storage and gateway programming. All of this is provided via centralized control through the iDigi Manager Pro service module at my.idigi.com. It’s simple to create an account at my.idigi.com and register devices. Low monthly fees are based upon number of registered devices. There is no long-term contract and devices can be deactivated at any time.
