“I lost my sight in 2009 when another fellow ran a stop sign and hit my car. Going to the gym makes me cheerful, it was one of those things that helped me move past it. I used to have a trainer, he definitely helped me, but coming here the quality of trainers is so much higher. I get so much more experience with these guys. And I’m just thrilled that every single week I’m able to do more and more. I haven’t hit a plateau in a very long time. That’s why I love this training and I love this facility.”

COPAT Testing

Preschool 1

The Correctional Officer Physical Ability Test (COPAT) evaluates your capacity to meet the physical demands of Correctional Services work. Successful completion of this test is required before an interview may be granted. The test is comprised of multiple stations consisting of activities that must be successfully completed in sequence and within a specified time limit. It is the occupational assessment used by the Solicitor General of Alberta in selecting candidates applying to Correctional Peace Officer positions.

These preschoolers will learn to get in and out of the water safely, how to move in shallow water and use a lifejacket to be comfortable with their floats and glides.

Medical clearance required. Visit www.solgps.alberta.ca/careers/ correctional_peace_officers for Medical Consent Form.

Preschool Lessons

Preschool 2 These youngsters will explore learning to submerge and exhale underwater. Buoyant aids are used to help them discover rollovers, glides and flutter kicks.

A four person minimum registration is required to run a testing session.

10

These preschoolers will master their floats, glides and short swims on their front and back (3 m). They’ll be able to pick up objects from waist deep water and use their lifejackets to jump and roll into the deep end.

Preschool 4 These capable preschoolers will strengthen their flutter kicks and try swimming front crawl. They’ll start to learn how to support themselves in deep water and in the end they’ll do solo jumps and side rolls into deep water. Their lifejacket will support them while they learn to tread water and swim to safety (5 m) in the deep end.

Swim Lessons Preschool 5 These skilled and independent youngsters will master short swims doing front crawl (5 m) and back crawl (5 m). They are ready to take on a forward roll into deep water with their lifejacket on and to tread water without the extra support. Here they will get their first chance to try whip kick and fitness training.

Lessons for School-Age Children Swimmer levels make sure your child learns how to swim before they get in too deep. Each level challenges school-aged children 5 years and older to develop safe entries, deep water support, underwater skills and swimming strokes. Kids learn lasting healthy habits by getting and staying fit.

Swimmer 1 These beginning swimmers will work on safe entries, exits and moving through the water. When ready, they’ll do floats, glides and kicking on their front and back without assistance. They’ll even explore jumping into deep water and treading water with their lifejackets on.

Swimmer 2 These children will be able to jump or side-roll into deep water, tread water and swim (10 m) using either front crawl or back crawl. They’ll try ‘vertical’ whip kick and begin to work on their endurance level by stepping into the world of fitness interval training.

Canadian Swim Patrol Level 7: Rookie Patrol Rookie Patrol develops fitness levels to meet a timed 100 m swim and 350 m workout. Water proficiency skills include: swims with clothes, ready position and foot-first and head-first surface dives. Demonstrating an ability to conduct a primary assessment and initiating EMS are included as first aid skills. Victim recognition and throwing assists are other key elements of the program.

Level 8: Ranger Patrol Ranger Patrol enhances capability in the water, including stride entry, underwater forward and backward somersaults, lifesaving eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels to meet a 200 m timed swim. Rescue skills involve an increased skill level in ABC first aid basics, victim recognition and non-contact rescues.

Level 9: Star Patrol Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Participants develop lifesaving and first aid skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 100 m each; and complete 600 m workouts and 300 m timed swims.

NEW!

Swimmer 3 These swimmers will dive and do forward rolls into deep water. Watch them learn handstands and front somersaults underwater. They’ll work on their front crawl, back crawl and whip kick over short distances and add some interval fitness training to their practice.

Swimmer 4 These swimmers will swim farther with their front crawl and back crawl. They’ll get introduced to breaststroke arms drills, underwater swims and front crawl sprints. Interval training will add to their fitness level. By the end they’ll be able to meet the Swim to Survive™ standard: roll into deep water, tread water (1 min) and swim (50 m).

SwimAbilities Lessons

This group swimming program is designed for children aged 4-16 with special needs. In SwimAbilities, instructors will break down swim skills into small, manageable components with logical progressions and lots of opportunities for success. Students will benefit from a slower-paced program, visual supports, more one-on-one assistance, appropriate modifications to the program, and a “just-right challenge.” Each class is 45 minutes long with 30 minutes class time and 15 minutes transition time for play and getting into/out of the pool. Please contact us for more information at Aquatics@MacEwan.ca Parent/chaperone must be in the water with swimmer at all times. Note: If the child can swim independently 5 m on their front and 5 m on their back, and complete a distance swim of 10 m, please contact us at Aquatics@MacEwan.ca for program options.

SwimAbilities 1

SwimAbilities 2

This level is for children who ave never taken swimming lessons and cannot put their face in the water.

This level is for children who can put their face in the water, make bubbles and can be held in a front or back float position.

Swimmer 6

SwimAbilities 3

SwimAbilities 4

These swimmers will master eggbeater and scissor kicks, front crawl, breaststroke and back crawl. With the interval training and sprint racing drills, they’ll be ready to make the 300 m endurance workout. And, just for fun, they’ll try stride jumps and compact jumps. Next step: the Canadian Swim Patrol program.

This level is for children who can independently float on their front and back with or without help.

This level is for children who can swim 5 m and float for 5 seconds on either their front or back.

These swimmers will try eggbeater kick, head-up front crawl, shallow dives and, just for fun, try tuck jumps and underwater back somersaults. They’ll easily go the distance with a strong front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

“In December 2015 I realized I was close to 300lbs even though I’m only 5’3”. At that point staying the same was more painful than changing, so I decided to do whatever it took, for however long it would take, to get my health back on track. The facilities are amazing; I swam in the pool almost daily. Later, when I lost more weight, I switched to the treadmill and the elliptical. The staff that got to know me were always incredibly friendly and encouraging; that played a huge part in me wanting to come back day after day.”
