IDA SOFIA FLEMING

Ninni Luhtasaaren teosten maailmankuva perustuu pinnalle ryöppyävään primitiivisyyteen. Riisumalla ilmaisusta osoittelevat elementit, sörkitään ihmisen ja eläimen välille keksittyä rajapintaa. Näyttelyssä nähdään Luhtasaaren mahlaa valuvia keraamisia suihkulähdeveistoksia. Lempeiden linssien läpi tarkastellaan hämmennystä, häpeää, kosketusta ja kaikenlaista vuotoa. Eihän valumiselleen mitään mahda.

Kaikki äitini -veistosinstallaatio on muotokuva äidistä. Äitini on kirjoittaja.

Tamperelaisen kuvataiteilija-muusikon veistoksia, kirjontaa ja installaatioita on nähty muun muassa useissa yksityisnäyttelyissä, Tampereen taidemuseolla, Mäntän kuvataideviikoilla sekä Ars Auttoisilla. Luhtasaari on myös osa helsinkiläis-tamperelaissavonlinnalaista Sexy Sexy Lover -taiteilijaryhmää. Muusikkona hän esiintyy suosikkiyhtyeissä Maria ja Marsialaiset, Ninni Forever Band, Pintandwefall ja Risto.

TAHMELAN HUVILA 20.9.–28.10.2019

MARITA LAPPALAINEN tekstiiliteoksia

“Olen viehättynyt perinnetekstiilien tekotavoista. Tällä hetkellä olen kiinnostunut punonnasta, joka on ikiaikainen, kaikissa kulttuureissa käytetty tapa tehdä köyttöesineitä. Näyttelyyn olen tehnyt pieniä kolmiulotteisia taidetekstiileitä yksinkertaisella tuohipunonnan menetelmällä kierrätysmateriaaleista.”

SANNI WECKMAN tekstiiliteos Rasinpelto

Luukkonen on on työskennellyt performanssin parissa vuodesta 2007.

MIRA HEIJA

valokuvasarja neulanreikätekniikalla: Uneni muuttuvat muistoiksi Muistoni tulevat uniin.

Mira Heija (s. 1979) on tamperelainen kuvataiteilija, joka työskentelee neulanreikävalokuvaustekniikalla.

Uneni muuttuvat muistoiksi.

Interaktiivinen valoteos Hän valaisee/She Lights up the room

“Hän astuu sisään, katseet kääntyvät kuin odottamaan. Hän astuu sisään.”

PETRI ASLAK PUOLAKKA maalauksia

Petri Aslak Puolakka on 44-vuotias Tampereen Pispalassa toimiva, pääosin itseoppinut kuvantekijä.

Leave My Mind Alone

RAJAPORTIN SAUNAN KAHVILA 2.–30.9.2019

JASMIN GAMS

Reflection -videoteos The work explores emotions different people feel during the process of “getting ready”. Sometimes it’s very positive but sometimes it can also be a negative experience that we have to learn to deal with. Feminism is about being empowered, to love oneself and how we can learn to deal with a negative self image. I’m a 21 year old second year Fine Art student studying in Tampere University of Applied Sciences. I have been living in Tampere, Finland for about two years now. I completed my secondary education in Germany but was living in Thailand for 16 years before moving there. I am mainly focused on drawing and painting using mainly acrylic and oil colors but lately I have been more and more interested in moving image and video installations. The main theme in my works is usually about issues within oneself and how it affects the world around you.

ANNA VÄRRI

sarja maalauksia Maybe it’s worth it “Olen kiinnostunut ympäröivän maailman näennäisen tavanomaisista, mutta pohjimmiltaan absurdeista vakiintuneista konventioista.

SAMI ALA

PULPA Argentina, 2016

finland european, 2015 Facts and documentary material containing short film where old, lonely and outsider Sami people blame Finland about all the unjustice that has been done to them and through laws and orders. Provocative text is a monologue and it ends in kind of healing spell. In pictures we see roads into the darkness, man in a sauna, old eugenics photos, Finnish politicians in their government house and so on. Sami people are only indigenous people in Europe. After their culture has been almost destroyed in Finland and other Nordic countries, it has began to revive in spite of hundreds of years of oppression and terror.

An exploration about the pornographic exhibition of intimacy in digital media. Juicy inner exploration of the inner forests and oceans. An erotic-gastronomic-visual experience.

VERONICA BURGER

VERONICA BURGER

Never tired of falling in love, Vérorose plays with the structures of popular Latin American as well as European telenovelas in combination with elements of well-known musicals, such as The Sound of Music. In my fictional trailer, Julie Andrews is replaced by Vérorose, costumed in an exaggerted version of an Austrian Tracht. Multi-sexed, she can change her appearance whenever she wants. But she finds happy endings boring...

For songs of fortune, Veronika Burger visited several fortune-tellers in order to predict her artistic and financial future. All fortune-tellers received the same three questions: What is the vocational fortune going to be? What is the financial future going to be? Is the exhibition going to fail?

Vérorose Austria, México 2012

‘songs of fortune Austria, México 2012

“Songs of fortune reflects on the precarious working and production conditions in the field of art and culture, in particular I examine my relationship to my own production and productivity, as well as criteria of success and failure. Played in a musical, operatic form, the text revolves around the language of immaterial and affective work, the ways of optimizing one’s own workforce. The contrasting of individual voice and choir reinforces the staging of the text and creates corporeality where no bodies can be seen.”

For the staging of the telenovela, locations in Vienna were picked which are similar to the original Latin American series locations. The trailer shows faked rehearsals, “behind-the-scene” elements and concrete elements of the telenovela Vérorose.

MARTIN CALVINO

‘Ocho Cortado: Altered Realities of a Tango Dream’ is a short film portraying the tango dreams of a woman on her daily subway commute. Reality and fantasy are in dialogue with each other through the embodiment of tango dance with subway strangers. One of the dreams anticipate a tragic event in reality.

‘Cuatro Palabras’ is a short film about a tango story that explores (and emphasizes) the emotional tension of a couple. It uses visual elements inspired from a previous stop motion animation experiment in which mannequins walked up the stairs and danced together. Similarly, the characters featured in this film also walked up the stairs (Sandy Urna featuring ‘Sandra’) and danced together (Sandra & Jorge Razumny, respectively).

EMANUELE DAINOTTI Un cuento de Santa Marìa Uruguay/Italy, 2018

Un cuento de Santa Marìa is a 4-channel installation created during the art residence AIR MadreSelva, Montevideo (Uruguay). The artwork is composed of four stories of people without hope inspired by the atmospheres of the novels written by the Uruguayan writer Juan Carlos Onetti. Onetti’s novels take places in the imaginary city of Santa Marìa. The main characters of the artworks are forced into a nihilistic and dark loop. The aspect ratio of the 4 channels changes constantly and slowly until the images will become impossible to be watched by the viewer. Emanuele Dainotti (b. Milano, 1987) is an italian artist and filmmaker. His videos and video installations have been shown and awarded in expositions and festivals such as Filmideo (USA); Louvre Museum (France); FIVAC (Cuba); Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); XIV Mostra internazionale del video d’autore Avvistamenti (Italy); VAFT (Finland), Salón Internacional de la Luz (Colombia); Festival Miden (Greece); Fonlad (Portugal). In 2018 he won the “International Competition for the Intermedia Artwork” organized by the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, The Faculty of Intermedia and the Foundation for Development of Intermedia Artwork. In 2019 a jury presided by Anish Kapoor awarded him with the “Now You See Me award” at Louvre Museum in Paris.

DANIELLE HEATH

Twist, Delude, Dissemble and Flimflam Sweden, 2018 “Twist, Delude, Dissemble and Flimflam (The Trickstar’s Guide.)” 2018, Is 1 of 3 video works created by Danielle Heath. A single female figure gives instructions directly to the audience and creates an uncomfortable expectation for them to perform tasks with unknown/unseen objects off-screen. The tasks requested of the viewer gradually become more ludicrous and impossible. The instructor is sometimes imploring, almost reaching desperation, sometimes patronising and with a hint of spite. There is a feeling of unease in the relationship to the audience which could almost be seen as dishonest. The development of the instructor character came from research into female trickstars (a term coined by Marilyn Jurich) throughout mythology and history. These female trickstars reveal several aspects of their environment whilst they navigate it. They trick themselves into more secure roles to survive, often tricking the male characters into accepting more complicated female characters of womankind in general. Before the desire to trick they are often suffering some level of restriction, having to play by impossible rules. This leads to a lot of frustration to which their reaction is to find trickery methods to overcome adversity. “What I intend is to show in this video is different levels of tricks, both serious and absurdly humorous, being played out including the trick that the instructor finds herself under (feeling pressure to play out these instructions whilst never entirely being certain of why she’s doing so). My suggestion is that the trick is being played on womankind in general. There are unwritten rules that are never entirely explained. It also illustrates and plays with a fallacy that failure (in a neo-liberal sense) comes only from the perception of ‘not-trying’ hard enough. The intention is that the audience questions the reasons for this uneasy relationship with the trickstar and societies rules.”

SINASI GUNES

Anatolia 2006 This work contains images of women who live in Anatolia and have different cultural features and relations. The video art refers to consepts of “taboo” and “privacy” in addition to cultural diversity of Anatolia. In the work, acts of “covering” and “wrapping” hides ones personality. It is a visual feast on the diversity of traditions with pre/post arguments.

FLORENCIA LEVY

Landscape for a person Argentina, 2015 Landscape for a person traces a path through different locations into a sequence of images. Places as the backdrop for a story that slips from its possible representation, building an invisible layer of meaning between the image and the story. This video was constructed from material filmed on Google Street View and then edited with audio interviews of people who were in conflict of transit or deportation.

HAMZA KIRBAS Powerism Turkey, 2018

Since the beginning of history, it is impossible to ignore the existence of a power that, besides the adventure of life of mankind, is all together with us, is constantly changing, brings benefits from time to time, has been created by man and has always existed. This power is the concept of ‘powerism’ The concept of power, depending on the philosophies developed in many different periods, is a reality that will never disappear even if it changes form. The power, chiefly the chieftain of the early ages, is an invisible but much larger power today. This power is aware of every development in the world and is even the creator and observer of these developments. In this study, the artist bases the concept of ‘powerism’ on the metaphor of a street play played by children. In the content of the game children play that they are growing up and have a say. Michel Foucault evaluates the changing understanding of power of our time with the Panopticon metaphor, a designed structure. This study was discussed in the context of various visual indicators produced by sociologists such as Foucault, and Louis Althusser.

It’s not what you think Hong Kong, 2018

“The body lying down on its back on a surface and being surveyed by the camera is vulnerable, while the hexagonal reflection from glossiness echoes not only the hexagonal reflection from objects that serve as transitions between the verbal phrases in the latter part of the video but also the perception that the body is an object subjected to beauty standards. All such vulnerability, fragility exist with the body’s power to assert its subjectivity, to get beyond control and limits. Those eight phrases, partly my own experience and reminders for myself and partly what I remember from conversations with others.”

Null Object Italy, 2018

Null Object moves on the border between video and performance, between desire for life and acceptance of death. The post human mother denies birth and her womb becomes a sort of retro-sci-fi machinery with a bio-mechanical structure that undoes life, does not create but generates death. Null Object presents the scandal of an intimate and personal reflection from joy to pain, from choice to disappointment. These changes of state are also suggested by the spatial trisection that recalls the classicism of the triptych and are developed through simple symbolic elements: the apple, the nails and the thread. All elements that in the iconographic tradition refer to the meaning of pleasure, curiosity, pain, life and death. The video is a contemporary reinterpretation of a classical theme of sacred art and considers the intimate experience of the relationship between sexuality and the social taboo of the rejection of motherhood.

The phrases: Self-talk is fine Say no to unwanted touch Say yes to taking actions Bare lips’re great I’m more than my body parts Say “let me finish” when I get talked over Be unapologetic Eat all the chocolates I want

MILO MASONIČIĆ Grandparents Montenegro, 2018

AMINE OULMAKKI Oxygène Morocco, 2015-2017 Grandparents is an experimental silent documentary about an old couple. Movie shows complexity of their relationship. There are four chapters in the movie. 57 years together is the first chapter. Theme of this chapter is dark side of love. Their relationship is fulfilled with tenderness, brutality, suffering and injustice. They are hurting each other. They are, also, helping each other to overcome pain and depression. Water, fire and shadows are dominant leitmotifs in the first part. Second chapter Shadows focuses on the grandmother. She is exhausted by life. She is sitting in her armchair and showing to the camera her rheumatoid hands and feet. Themes of this chapter are time, disease, joy and death. It documents her pain, faith and fears. Third chapter See you everywhere focuses on grandfather. It documents his routine. His wife is part of everything he does. They are two Bodies merge into one Soul. This chapter explores his fear of losing someone he loves.

As the earth can be a reminder of our identity, water can play the same role, as the element of life is impacted by all matters of impressions and feelings. For example, each woman reacts differently once she enters water, yet the goal remains the same: deliverance. Who did not share in the experience of the bath or the shower? Once in water, we exhibit absolute silence; it is an intimate and unique moment with ourselves, our ideas, our depths – resurgences of childhood memories. Water brings with it a relaxing effect, inspiring confidence and bringing us closer to absolute freedom. Water remains however mysterious, housing hidden forms within itself. It is - to quote Bachelard - “A fluid language, with no collisions, no limits, continuous, softening the rhythm...” It is the building block of the world; a simple contact with water is a contact with the beginning, the start, our origin. Observing the work of Amine Oulmakki we see different positions of women in water, including the “fetus woman” with her anodyne and naive movements. The video exhibit Oxygène is a living, breathing work which forces the viewers to interact with the art, either by seeing themselves in it, or by developing in them a form of compassion towards the women depicted.

Final chapter Shadows is not about their relationship. It is about their apartment. Strange shadow appears inside their home and transforms into different forms. 22

El Vacío de la Nada Estonia, Spain, Mexico 2017

For Merleau-Ponty, EXPERIENCE is the possible conditions of space but the unity between the individual and the world is repressed by the experience of daily routines (Merleau Ponty 1945: 339).

IRENA PASKALI OPEN DIALOG Russia, 2018

This strange contradiction captures my interest to generate other possibilities of doing in space, where what is considered as NORMAL in terms of our representation and anticipation of THE OTHER is subverted by the body, language and affection.

Today we live in a dynamically developing world, where often what is considered safe today has no value tomorrow. Spatial distances are quickly overcome with modern means of transport. This leads to encounters between people which were recently unthinkable. Open exchange arises between those people, which is intensely and emotionally led. Relationships are made, but due to different lifelines quickly lost again. People have to go different ways. The separations are painful ... The project was realized in Petrozavodskk, Republic of Karelia, Russia in 2018 during a Karelia Artist in Residence program in Media Center Vykhod.

EL VACÍO DE LA NADA is part of Diaries of a Shaman Series. A series of performances for the camera. My interest in the body as a sensory platform that connects us to the world, takes me to shamanism as a way of connecting with the forces of nature and dwelling on new social imaginaries as well as questioning our roles for a present and future sustainable life. The figure of the female futuristic shaman acts as an intermediary between the human and non-human world, exposing the grotesque and challenging what is considered beautiful in our society.

A little hairy fairytale. Made on super 8mm film. Handmade effects made by hair and ink directly on film.

SPIEGELIMSPIEGELKOLLEKTIV “Offerta/Opera Vana” Italy / Germany, 2019

The concept originates from two of the iconological images described by Cesare Ripa in his book Nova Iconologia, the “Offerta-Offer” and the “Opera VanaUselessness of the Making”. Both of the images are impersonated by woman’s characters. The concept of the “Offer” is deeply embedded in the feminine role within society, where women are often expected to put aside their own needs and lives in order to take care of their families. The “Opera Vana” figure is the uselessness of the making, described by Cesare Ripa as a woman who stares at a spider web which she is holding with both hands.

NACHO RECIO ant Spain, 2015

ant; is an invitation to meditate about the everyday fight against the difficulties of our own environment, it’s an invitation to our own reflexion, it’s a searching for our real goals.

Visually intrigued by those figures, we reinterpreted them envisioning the traditional string games as a generator of images. The video attempts to describe a symbolic utopian third image, the impossibility of the offer. 24

O C C U P Y -Video-performance Argentina, 2017

The video shows the opposite look of feminism to emphasize the feminist movement. The video shows Soviet gymnasts performing their exercises in perfect sync with the theme of the popular TV show “The A-Team”. Although being a characteristic product of America’s capitalistic culture, the show’s narrative still seems to express a yearning for the cooperation and joint effort towards a common goal, that is typical of the socialist model.

“Shik Shak Shok” offers a merge between Eastern and Western cultures in the form of a group of can-can dancers dancing in perfect sync to the sound of a song associated with belly dancing. As the video progresses it raises the question of why Eastern belly dancing is considered so culturally inferior to this day, while can-can dancing, originally associated with prostitutes, is perceived as high culture. The video stresses this tension but also offers a chance for amendment and harmonic mediation.

“I lock myself inside the bathroom of an old abandoned house. I fire four flares, the room fills with black smoke. I try to breathe through the cracks. Women try to survive every day the hostile environment that surrounds us.” One femicide is committed in Argentina every 36 hours. Some die asphyxiated, set on fire. Some die pregnant or protecting their children. Some are found by the side of the road, inside garbage bags. Some are never found.
