REFLECTION BRIEF

Co-working environments merge work and community into the workplace for entrepreneurs, start-up companies and young freelancers. Unlike the traditional workplace, co-working environments as mentioned in The Rise of Coworking Spaces by A. Gandini, are “ … shared workplaces utilised by different sorts of knowledge professionals … working in various degrees of specialisation in the vast domain of the knowledge industry” (Gandini, A. (n.d.).). The main attraction to co-working environments is because of the diversity, connections with people and sense of community. As stated in the Harvard Business Review, “Each coworking space has its own vibe, and the managers of each space go to great lengths to cultivate a unique experience that meets the needs of their respective members. “(Garrett, G. S. (2018, November 29).). Creating spaces that allow for social interactions encourages workers to network and give workers a sense of identity within the community. A rising challenge in the workplace is the ability to keep workers engaged. Steelcase suggests, in an article called State of Work: Blur the Edges, that “It’s time to blur the edges of what we’ve traditionally considered the workplace. Spaces that blend design and materiality without compromising performance can inspire new ways of thinking and fueling creativity.”(Changing The State of How People Work. (2019, February 20)). To combat this challenge companies need to realize, embrace and adapt to the shift occurring in the workplace. As designer’s, we need to create options and give workers control. This can be achieved by creating destinations that allow workers the flexibility to move from one type of work space to another to support the work they need to do. This will boost the business’ success and most importantly, it will enhance workers creativity and engagement. The Communitech co-working environment focuses on this research by providing workers with flexibility through social and private interactions. It also enhances the workers engagement and commitment to the company while most importantly allowing users a space that supports their creative and most authentic selves.

CONCEPT STATMENT

The design of the Communitech co-working workplace encourages a sense of community and synergy. The sense of community in the office was inspired by ant colonies, in which all the ants work together in a team each bringing their own individual skills to create something greater than themselves. The design offers palette of place and palette of posture to engage the workers and keep them motivated. In the co-working environment each worker will feel a sense of place through the colour palette, furniture systems and architecture materials showcased to achieve a design that is inclusive and barrier free. The use of flexible furniture will allow users, with or without a physical disability, options and posture changes throughout the day. The ceiling is designed for easy navigation throughout the space, for individuals with or without a visual disability, with the use of a lowered ceiling, indirect lighting and matte finishes to reduce glare. Workplaces are thoughtfully planned out to maximize natural daylight and are adjacent to escape or scrum spaces. Wall and ceiling acoustical treatments are designed to benefit everyone’s needs and to reduce distractions within the workplace. The graphics and contrasting colour palette throughout the space enhance the corporate identity of Communitech and are also a way of creating easy identifiable spaces. The design overall enhances the concept of ant colonies and showcases it in a workplace environment.

BRANDING

The inspiration for the design colour palette was drawn from the existing Communitech colour palette. A sense of corporate identity is achieved through the use of saturated blue and yellow colours. The introduction of the colour green and beige drew inspiration from nature and introducing it into the interior.

The design features triangular shapes to further the corporate identity of Communitech. The company logo features a triangle, therefore the design drew inspiration from this and showcases the shape in ceiling, wall and flooring elements. Embedded LED lighting and downlighting

Effects of Colour: Research shows that blue is a colour that: ● Represents trust, logic, communication and efficiency ● Using blue as a primary colour in an office environment helps worker focus ● Blue is also shown to lower heart rate and blood pressure Research shows that yellow is a colour that: ● Evokes emotions ● Represents creativity, friendliness, and confidence ● It also may be distracting, therefore research suggest using it as an accent colour to avoid over stimulating workers Research shows that green is a colour that: ● Represents harmony, nature and restoration ● Boosts creativity, inspires people, reduces anxiety and reduces eye strain
