“Everyone has its own colour, a shade whose light almost filters along the outlines of the body. A kind of aura. Like shapes seen in the black light.” A fundamental characteristic of Regina Thyssen that influences almost every of her paintings is the fact that, as a student, she studied fashion design. Many of her artworks seem to focus on the feminine body and she shows all of her knowledge of lines and proportions, a result of her studies that gives her painting a unique and distinctive style. We can almost say that she creates human landscapes because the bodies are never predominant but still occupy a big part of the paintings. Particularly interesting are the last series of paintings, characterized by an interesting choice of colours, especially the contrast between the forms and the white background or the big, white spaces. Besides feminine nudes she also focused on the representation on horses and in one of her last projects she found herself painting directly on horses’ bodies, creating living landscapes. Regina’s paintings firstly may seem abstract but looking carefully the viewer starts to distinguish figures and landscapes. It’s very interesting the series dedicated to the art in brothels: it focused on the feminine body and was exhibit in an actual brothel. The aim was to go beyond a world that only focuses on the body as it is.

She was able to create colourful nudes that expand on the canvas like landscapes. It’s like her artworks invite the viewer to look for the figures in a painting that at the first sight may appear abstract. The black and strong brushstrokes the help distinguish the forms of the protagonists and of the landscapes. The bodies don’t follow the classical stereotypes of beauty, they’re not thin and rigid bodies but more feminine, rounded, generous and soft. It is very important the use of colour that needs to be carefully rationed in order to create landscapes only created by human bodies and that thanks to the colour become almost surrealist.
